President Obama calls Kanye West a ‘jackass’ – off the record (update: audio)

obamakanye
President Obama, who I would wager is the only head of state who can do the “Single Ladies” signature hand move, supposedly called Kanye West a “jackass” for his now infamous interruption of Taylor Swift’s “best female video” acceptance speech at Sunday’s VMAs. Obama made the remark off the record during an interview with CNBC, and ABC news anchor Terry Moran of Nightline Tweeted the news to his million followers that “Pres. Obama just called Kanye West a ‘jackass’ for his outburst at VMAs when Taylor Swift won. Now THAT’S presidential.” Moran quickly deleted that Tweet when CNBC officials reminded him that Obama’s statement against Kanye was made off the record. You can’t ever delete a tweet, though, there are services that archive them, they still show up in Twitter searches for days, and if you have any followers they’ll remember.

ABC has apologized to both CNBC and The President for Moran’s tweet.

President Obama called musician Kanye West a “jackass” during an interview Monday with CNBC, an ABC News anchor reported to his followers on Twitter. But the tweet caused some red faces at ABC, and the network soon apologized for publicizing what had apparently been an off-the-record comment.

“Pres. Obama just called Kanye West a ‘jackass’ for his outburst at VMAs when Taylor Swift won. Now THAT’S presidential,” “Nightline” co-anchor Terry Moran wrote Monday evening. Moran has more than 1 million followers on the microblogging service.

CNBC objected to the post, which was apparently from a portion of the interview that was supposed to be off the record. Moran quickly deleted the comment (although it still can be accessed online), and an ABC spokesperson apologized for the tweet in a statement first posted on Politico.

Moran “prematurely tweeted … before our editorial process had been completed. That was wrong. We apologize to the White House and CNBC and are taking steps to ensure that it will not happen again,” the spokesperson said.

The president was apparently responding to West’s interruption of Taylor Swift after she won an award at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday. West took the microphone from Swift to proclaim that Beyonce had a better video than she did.

West later apologized for his actions.

[From The Washington Post]

We’ll be covering Kanye’s tearful interview on the premiere of Jay Leno’s revamped show shortly, but it’s worth noting that this incident is the most press Kanye’s received in years. The Washington Post asks if it was a staged ploy to drum up interest in Kanye’s tour, a suspicion that MTV’s spokesperson denies, saying “It was absolutely not staged.” It was staged by Kanye though for sure, even if it was a drunken last minute decision.

People Magazine reports that despite Kanye’s initial now-deleted half-assed apology saying he would “apologize to Taylor 2mrw” and was “sooooo sorry to Taylor Swift and her fans and her mom,” he was very unapologetic to Taylor’s mom backstage at the VMAs and kept saying that Beyonce’s video should have won, not Taylor’s. At least Taylor’s mom lit into him. Kanye has since issued a second more contrite and much briefer apology that has no doubt been written by someone with much better sense than he has. “I feel like Ben Stiller in “Meet the Parents” when he messed up everything and Robert De Niro asked him to leave… That was Taylor’s moment and I had no right in any way to take it from her. I am truly sorry. ” Kanye has also turned off comments on his entire blog, which was open to comments as of yesterday morning.

Kanye has shown that he is indeed a jackass, and although the President probably doesn’t want it known that he called him one I think it’s safe to say that most people would agree with him.

  2. LuLu says:

I can’t say I agree with a lot of President’s politics. But I totally agree with him on this one Kanye is a jackass.

  3. YT says:

The president’s comment should not have been tweeted or reported, but I do agree with his use of the term “jackass”.

  4. Niamh says:

    Love it.

  5. lalala says:

if i was american i would b proud at this moment to say he was my president. that was awsome. i hope he really did say that. but u know uptight americans r going to make him apoligieze for that comment.

  6. beckylou says:

I would like to call Kanye a jack ass ON the record.

  7. lottaluvin says:

President Obama is right..Kanye is a jackass..

  8. Eileen Yover says:

Obama is awesome-good for him for expressing his opinion. Why is that a bad thing?? And yes Kanye, karma is a bitch!!

  9. Praise St. Angie! says:

““I feel like Ben Stiller in “Meet the Parents” when he messed up everything and Robert De Niro asked him to leave…”

as usual, Kanye has to make it about HIM and how HE felt.

    Jackass, indeed.

  10. Stephie says:

Best endorsement ever. (Thanks Mr. President, I’m glad you agree)

Of course, we’re all still talking about the a$$h0le right? So good or bad, he got himself the best PR ever. Any press is good press.

  11. Elizabeth says:

Let’s talk about Jake the Jackass for a moment. Jake Tapper is the ABC White House correspondent, and his ” . . . now THAT’S presidential” snide smacks of an anti-Obama slant. Jake can think whatever he wants in his own house, but as a journalist and Tweeter, he should know better. Another reason to drop ABC. (Charlie leaving being the first.)

  12. bros says:

I completely agree Elizabeth. Off the record means just that. I find it incredibly immature and unprofessional when ‘journalists’ and legislators are twittering crap constantly. its so playground nanny nanny boo boo im gonna tell on you oooo. I hate twitter. ABC has long been known as the Anti Barack Channel, and they are a crappy network anyway. the calibre of its “journalists” proves it now.

  13. Howie says:

Isn’t it nice to have a smart president? Love him.

  14. gg says:

Um, lala? That was not nice. I’m an American, I’m not uptight, and I’m not making Obama apologize, and nobody else has done so far either. And guess what – at least I can spell.

  15. hmm says:

Note to Terry Moran or whichever ABC jackass leaked the comment. Tweeting an off the record comment, now THAT’S professional.

  16. Iggles says:

Will this story ever die? I think it’s kind of trivial for the President to be commenting on something that happened on the MTV awards! I do think Kanye’s a douche..

  17. Jones says:

I love your President, I wish he was our Prime Minister…

  18. Meghan says:

Geez it’s not like he was giving a State of the Union address and was like “I, as the President of the United States, am calling Kanye West a jackass.” Which I’m sure would have made Kanye pee himself with excitement. He was saying it as Barack Obama, normal man who is perfectly allowed to think and say these things, not as the President.

It’s kind of refreshing that he is noticing these kinds of things (how can you not?) because, to me, it makes him have a little more in common with the regular people. I mean can’t you just see the Obamas hanging out on the couch, eating popcorn, watching the VMAs? Maybe Bo dancing around better than Heidi?

  19. Fat Elvis says:

lala: Based on your comments, I’m sure President Obama would consider you a jackass, too. And we “uptight” Americans would agree in full. In other words: STFU dummy.

  20. I Choose Me says:

    @hmm. 😀

  21. smallwonder2738 says:

Wow… the first thing I agree with Obama about… it would be nice if he would spend more time on being the President than trying to be a celebrity.

  22. lena says:

actually small wonder, it would be nice if he was treated like a President instead of a celebrity… tweeting what the President says when it’s off record is not President Obama’s doing

  23. Kevin says:

    KANYE IS NOT A MUSICIAN!!!

  24. hatsumomo says:

Well you gotta admit, the man calls them likes he sees them!

    And on a side note,

I’M GOING TO EUROPE!!!!!!!I’M GOING TO EUROPE!!!! I’M GOING TO EUROPE!!!!!
Just found out my man is going to be transferred to London for his work!!!! And hes taking me too!!!! And a 2 week vaycay in Paris while we are there!!!!! YAY ME! Mika, Amy, Lily here I come!

  25. bros says:

smallwonder: you mean it would be nice if insane crazies recognized he was the president and stopped trying to pretend he was born in outer space and stopped heckling him when he was addressing congress instead of acting like it was open mic night at a poetry jam? like, actually let him do his job instead of spewing hate, vitriol, and paranoia? me too.

  26. TaylorB says:

Of course the POTUS was aware of that stupidity, the ‘first daughters’ are tweenage girls, the POTUS and the first lady are probably stuck (like most parents of Tweens) reluctantly watching their fair share of MTV and American Idol and other variations of that horrid claptrap trotted out on TeeVee these days with their daughters. They probably have to purchase TeenBeat and bad teeny bopper music and Oreos, Cheetos, etc as well. They are just normal parents, doing normal parent stuff, and commenting on some fool acting like a jacka**, because he was, hopefully to illustrate the lesson of ‘how not to behave’ to his young girls.

  27. hunnybe says:

let me get this straight Kanye =jackass but Jack Black prayer to satan=acceptable. What a president we have aren’t there childern that need health care and an economy that needs to be fixed.I love how he has the time to deal with nonsense but important things he says’the hell with them’He goes on and on about losing his mother to cancer so many years ago.People greve differently but who is he to speak. He didn’t say nothin to that guy that called him a lier.Maybe because it’s true?

  28. Praise St. Angie! says:

“He didn’t say nothin to that guy that called him a lier.Maybe because it’s true?”

no, maybe because he has a modicum of decency and respect, unlike the guy who yelled at the President while he addressed Congress.

  29. GatsbyGal says:

    Best. President. Ever.

    <3 you, Obama.

  30. barneslr says:

Not getting into the political debate that is brewing here. I know how I feel and that’s enough.

    But I will say this:

For the very first time, Obama and I are in complete agreement with something. Kanye West is a jackass.

  31. hunnybe says:

@28 if him having decency then made him so great then why not have it now.Like I said there are more pressing matters that should be addressed not this crap.

  32. Hieronymus Grex says:

He’s got better things to do— hello!!!!

  33. lalala says:

wow. ok so i apoligise for my comment about uptight americans. it was meant more toward congress that makes him apoliges for stuff. thats what i meant. so again im sorry. relax. dont get uptight about it. lmao.

  34. Praise St. Angie! says:

“Like I said there are more pressing matters that should be addressed not this crap.”

yeah, and ON camera, DURING THE INTERVIEW, he was addressing them.

And OFF the record, he made ONE comment about pop culture.

it’s not like he went on CNBC to do an interview and brought this up and discussed it at length.

you’re making a mountain out of a molehill here.

  35. hatsumomo says:

30-32, well think of it this way, if you can, if the president is too busy to make an off hand remark, then he must be too busy to eat, shower, be a husband, or a father to his children! After all from your logic being the President is all consuming! He must not speak of anything else than health care!

  36. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

I can’t make heads or tails out of half of this stuff. Put down the anger, pick up a book, and embrace syntax.

  37. Annie says:

I think I will abstain from the politics of this one too.

I have a headache today and frankly, I don’t want to make it worse (lol).

That being said, I 100% agree with the president. Fucking hilarious. I love that he said that.

It reminds me of the Spanish king who was at some huge meet some time back with some major foreign leaders and Chavez was rambling on and the king mutters under his breath “Why don’t you shut up”. I about died it was so funny.

  38. hunnybe says:

@ 35 that is not what I am saying I am simply saying that first and formost that nothing he says is off the record, he should know that by now and if you were around my field of studies you would understand my stand on the healthcare issue.I see children and old people who are suffering from not being able to get proper healthcare and it tears me up inside. That is the main reason I voted for him. There is a time and place for everything and that comment would have been better spoken to an actual friend, not a member of the press in any capacity.

  39. TaylorB says:

    Hunnybe,

Just curious, but what exactly is your field of study?

  40. Praise St. Angie! says:

well, when your point keeps shifting, it’s hard to keep track of WHAT you’re saying.

“first and formost that nothing he says is off the record, he should know that by now”

and that’s where you’re wrong. SOME things he says are absolutely off the record. every president, regardless of party, is certainly allowed some privacy in their life.

the only person who f-ed up here is Terry Moran who made public something that was CLEARLY not meant to be made public.

and FYI, I DO work in the health care realm (working, not just studying), and I’m aware of the problems people face in that area. and he was addressing those things ON the record, for the interview he was giving.

not to mention (AGAIN) that it’s not like he was asked about the health care bill and wanted to talk about Kanye instead. the entire conversation, his comment included, probably lasted an entire 30 seconds.

so, if he’s not allowed to comment on pop culture because it’s just not as important as health care in the US, I guess that means (as hatsumomo said) the he shouldn’t talk to his wife about anything, he shouldn’t talk to his kids about their day at school, he shouldn’t talk to his friends (or anyone else for that matter) about anything other than health care, ON the record?

    mountain. out. of. MOLEHILL.

  41. HashBrowns says:

38 and others: The President is allowed to have opinions on frivolous things. He’s allowed to say things to the press off the record, that is the purpose of the expression “off the record”. Had that idiot not tweeted that the President said that, it never would have been known to folks outside of that reporter’s inner circle as he probably would have told somebody, but not the “world”.

Our President has young children who probably watched the show. If Obama didn’t watch it himself, he probably heard about the incident from his children/wife/white house staff people, who knows?

But the President is not a robot who can talk or think about nothing else besides presidential duties. He is a husband and a father as well. He has opinions about stupid things that happen in daily life.

    Get. Over. It.

Here is likely what happened: The President was chit-chatting with the reporter before/after/during a break in the interview. The reporter says, “Hey what did you think about what Kanye West did at the awards show?” and in all likelihood the President responded like anyone else would have, knowing (or at least believing) that his comment would not be published.

Lastly, he did not make the comment during a press conference or a joint meeting of congress, nor did he put out a press release about this. This was some idiot journalist who tweeted an OFF THE RECORD comment on TWITTER.

  42. gg says:

Congrats, hatsumomo! You will LOVE Europe and the people there, and going there will change your life forever. My husband is British and we go often and I adore it; going in 2 weeks myself, so WOO! I share your excitement! 😀

  43. BooJoulais says:

HashBrowns, you’re as wonderful as your name. God Bless cool heads and clear thinking. No more Town Hall Hate!

  44. hunnybe says:

Really. I need to get over it.You guys are in here congratulating someone for insulting someone else.Kanye was wrong, but two wrongs don’t make a right. If I am making a mountain out of mole hill so is everyone else commenting about anything concerning the Kanye and Taylor incident. This is between Kanye and Taylor not everyone else. I understand that this is a gossip site and everyone has an opinion. This is mine. You don’t have to agree but it is what is.So get over this whole Kanye thing already.Did he snub you personally?Oh and we all need to get over it.Thanks for reading.

  45. Annie says:

    Wow.

So he’s not allowed to have an opinion ever?

It’s not like he made a press conference. Ridiculous.

Anywho, Hatsu! I’m curious about where in Europe you’ll be visiting???

  46. hatsumomo says:

Ok I need to calm down about Europe. Can you tell I’ve never been? If you could see me, I’m the happiest bounciest bunny ever!
London, G.B. and Paris, France. My man is getting transferred for a month to the company’s office in London for training new Linux techs and he is taking Earned Time Off for two weeks in Paris. And the company is paying for his apartment there too! (not in France though). And all the benefits, as in a daily food allowance. On top of all that, they are also paying for his passport (but not mine), air travel (but not for me) and such. He can take me, but I wont be covered by the company. But so what? How often can you go half off? I’ve never been out of the country before(Mexico dosent count, I live so close to it). And I can assure you, I’m going to stalk every celebrity there. End of October, he is going and I wont arrive till the first week of Nov. Meaning I’m going to be Peggy Bundy without my Al 🙁 . (me, my sisters and their husbands are doing famous couples for the H. party). The only bummer in fabulous holiday plans.

  47. Annie says:

ROFL! I agree!!! Mexico doesn’t count for me either! (Seeing as how, we can literally just walk across the border and have, many times. LOL)

    I’M SO EXCITED FOR YOU!!!

My boyfriend and I just came back from a long vacation in Barcelona and San Sebastian.

Girl, if you can, go to Barcelona. You will LOVE it. And that city NEVER sleeps. They party ’til 7am. No joke. And it doesn’t matter what day of the week it is (except maybe Sunday, because Spain is a Catholic nation)

BTW, in Spain, if you get a chance to visit, be conscious of the Siesta. LOL Or you’ll end up wandering around closed shops in the afternoon while all the Spaniards are chilling.

And hey, be as excited as you want!!! I can’t even begin to tell you how annoying I was before my trip. LOL You couldn’t get me to stop talking about it.

And now I just can’t wait to go back. Paris is definitely on the list.

  48. JGG says:

@hunnybe wow, he makes one offhand comment “OFF THE RECORD” and all of sudden; he’s slacking off.. doesn’t care about the economy and health care? Get fucking real… as for Moran, he made a gross negligence as a journalist tweeting to millions of subscribers about an “OFF THE RECORD” comment. How ever so PROFESSIONAL of him. And hunnybe, let me enlighten you as a journalist. “OFF THE RECORD” means off the record; period. It also applies to public figures. Stick to comments on what you know.

Seriously that made me burst out loud laughing. I absolutely {heart} our president. He’s real and genuine.. and at least he doesn’t live inside a bubble.
