Robert Pattinson on fame: “the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life”

Robert “Sparkles/Pattz” Pattinson is the cover boy for the new issue of the British magazine AnOther Man. I am pretty unfamiliar with this magazine, but judging solely from the way Sparkles was styled and photographed, I’m thinking the readership probably falls into the ever-so-elusive “artsy-fartsy/gay” sub-trend. Pattz was photographed by Hedi Slimane, who is probably best known as the former chief designer of Dior Homme (Christian Dior for men). Hedi seems like the kind of young Karl Lagerfeld-type who needs his boys emaciated and pouting. So Pattz was right up his alley.

In the interview preview on AnOther Man’s site, Pattz talks about the fickle bitch that is fame, how clueless he was about how big Twilight was going to be, and his future as an actor. Remember, girls: he’s 23 years old. He’s not supposed to be brilliant. Just be happy he’s so pretty.

DazedDigital previews issue 9 of AnOther Man out on October 1, which features Robert Pattinson on the cover, shot by Hedi Slimane and styled by Nicola Formichetti. Dave Calhoun speak to the 23-year-old Twilight star about the pressures of fame and the craft of acting: “It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life.”

Was Pattinson aware of the loyalty of fans of the Twilight books? It looks like the sort of obsessive fandom that can turn into anger and even hatred when an adaptation isn’t to their liking. Did he know what he was letting himself in for? “It’s strange because even though the figures show that the books were successful and sold millions of copies, you couldn’t even buy them in London. I tried a couple of bookshops and they weren’t available. Hardly anyone I knew had read them apart from one girl, a friend of my sister. I had no idea at all. I’d seen Kristen Stewart in Into the Wild and some of the director Catherine Hardwicke’s other films, and that’s all I thought it was, something really small.”

His manner is very laid back. He doesn’t sound thrusting or ambitious, more like he’s just going with the flow and enjoying things. Is he going to harness his newfound fame and box-office appeal to approach the kind of filmmakers he wants to work with in the future? He’s not so sure. “Annoyingly, there are so few parts I feel I can add anything to, or that I want to do.” But he knows what he doesn’t need. “I don’t want to be an actor for the sake of it. I don’t find any particular pleasure in being an attention-seeker.”

I’m sure I’ll be accused of a double-standard, because if someone like Megan Fox uttered the words “It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life” about fame and the acting craft, I would be ripping them a new one. But Sparkles is so delicate! If I yell at him, he might break. He might tremble with emotion, then draw himself a hot bath, where he’ll sit and cry for several hours. I can’t yell at him for thinking his Twilight fame is “the hardest thing”. Probably because I’ve caught a glimpse of some of the more rabid Twihards, and I don’t envy Sparkles in the least. I’m surprised he hasn’t had a full-fledged nervous breakdown.

What’s keeping Sparkles’ head above water in the face of Twihard-lunacy? Most likely it’s Kristen Stewart. Yes, E! News’ gossip column The Awful Truth has an eyewitness interview (from the wait staff at a restaurant the Eclipse cast visits) from Vancouver. It seems that “everyone” in town knows Pattz and K-Stew are dating:

“The whole cast comes in a lot together. For some reason, this is one of the places the paparazzi doesn’t constantly find them,” dished one of the girls who has seated the Twilight crew dozens of time.

“It looks like they all really get along well. It’s always a fun table—they are laughing, joking and just very polite,” added the other girl.

A.T.: How about Rob and Kristen, what is their dynamic like?
Hostess One: Doesn’t everyone just know that they’re dating?

A.T.: Uh, you’d be surprised how many don’t want to believe it.
Hostess Two: Oh, well everyone here knows. They are the only cast members who will come in alone a lot. You can just tell by looking at them. They’re really cute together, always smiling.

A.T.: Love it! Hate to say it though, but “smiling” and “Kristen Stewart” seem unlikely to be in the same sentence together.
Hostess One: No way. She is incredibly sweet—I’d be a bitch, too, if there were cameras constantly in my face. But she’s great, and so is Rob. They just seem to make each other happy.

[From E! News]

Aw… sweet kids. Am I gross for wondering if the sex is good? I bet it is. I bet Sparkles doesn’t know what to do with himself. I bet Kristen has him wrapped around her little finger. I bet they do a lot of stuff Eli Roth was suggesting.

I think he’ll find being a has-been more difficult than fame when that day comes.

  2. Allie says:

I like Rob. In taped/live interviews, he always seems very nice, thoughtful and level headed. He could be a real jerk with all the attention he has been getting and that doesn’t seem to have happened to him.

  3. Ash says:

I LOL’d at drawing a hot bath and crying for hours. RPATZ TOTALLY takes baths. I just know it.

  4. princess pea says:

If the cast liked that restaurant because it was fairly private and they felt comfortable… well, I suspect they feel differently now that the hostesses are chatting to the press about them all. Nice.

And really, fame is sitting a little harder on him than most breakout young actors. The fans are insane… he can only hope that they relax once the movies are done and he can actually continue to work. If they don’t, I wouldn’t be surprised if he quits.

  5. clare says:

Ah, please, Kaiser! Lose the “Sparkles” and call him by his name.

  6. Eileen Yover says:

I just saw on Oprah that he was voted bost beautiful guy in the world. I think he’s cute but most beautiful?? Really?? And the #2 polo guy she had on was HELLO HOT!! Yowza! And another thing-where the HELL was Gerry on that list??

  7. Beth says:

I’m so glad you’re nice to Sparkles on your blog. He seems like such a kind person. Can’t wait to see him in something where he doesn’t play a wizard or a vampire.

  8. Taya says:

Poor baby. Its so hard being famous, having tons of money and many oppurtunities that no one else has.I feel so sorry for him ..NOT!

  9. RobN says:

The photoshoot is a cheap James Dean rip-off. He’s not that pretty and his tween fan base will move on soon enough. He should enjoy it while he’s still got work.

  10. Hieronymus Grex says:

The hardest thing Robert has ever done was a rough trick named Eric behind this bar called The Manhole. 🙄

  11. abbizmal says:

Aww, he needs a hug. I volunteer. He can come hide from the fans at my house anytime. I would def hit it.

“Sparkles” is such a demeaning nickname.

I saw him in what appeared to be a British indie. He was somewhat of a loser-nerd. His parents were emotionally closed off. His mother was supremely good at criticism and his father didn’t converse with him at all. His love was music and his one aim in life was trying to form a loser band. He was very good in it. He was actually a bit pudgy and seemed to be a little pidgeon-toed. Not what we see on the screen with Twilight.

  13. Chris says:

Such a cutiepie. “But Sparkles is so delicate! If I yell at him, he might break. He might tremble with emotion, then draw himself a hot bath, where he’ll sit and cry for several hours.”

He really does seem like the type.

  14. Chris says:

And for all that, I don’t think he’s gay.

  15. lolo says:

“I bet they do a lot of stuff Eli Roth was suggesting.”

Hahaha, well let’s hope they are. I hope it’s true they’re together and I hope it’ll last.

  16. Dianne says:

I imagine the rough part about his fame right now is being a prisoner in his hotel room for the most part. In theory, fame sounds nice – but when you can’t fart without it being reported all over the world and you don’t have the freedom to privacy and to go where you want without being in danger, I bet it gets old pretty fast.

I’d take the paycheck tho. 🙂
