Beyonce defends Kanye West’s VMA idiocy: he was standing up for art

wenn5363609
I have to admit, the first time I read Beyonce’s latest quotes about the Taylor Swift-Kanye West VMA controversy, my first thought was “Big B is a beeyotch.” Now that I’ve read them several times, I still kind of think she’s being a tad bitchy, but I also think her intention was to simply be nice to both Taylor and Kanye, it just didn’t come out the right way. Beyonce’s trying to have it both ways – she’s trying to defend both Taylor Swift and Kanye West, but she does it in a way that seems… snotty. Maybe it’s just me. Beyonce tries to explain what was going through Kanye’s drunken mess of a mind at the VMAs, and she says, “Well, I knew his intentions, and I knew he was standing up for art…When they didn’t call my name, he was, like, completely shocked.” Is she saying that she creates “art” and Taylor doesn’t?

Beyonce Knowles is finally breaking her silence about Kanye West storming the stage at the VMAs to declare that she should have won Best Female Video instead of Taylor Swift.

“Well, I knew his intentions, and I knew he was standing up for art; and he told me before, when they said the nominees, he’s like, ‘You have this award,'” Beyonce, 28, told O: The Oprah magazine editor at large Gayle King (via MTV News) at the Billboard Awards over the weekend, when she was named Woman of the Year.

“When they didn’t call my name, he was, like, completely shocked,” Knowles says. “And when he walked on the stage, I was like, ‘No, no, no!’ and then he spoke, and I was like, ‘Oh, no, no, no!'”

Knowles — who handed the mic over to Swift after winning Video of the Year later that night — continues, “But in the end, it ended up being a great night, and Taylor Swift did get her moment — and I didn’t have to make an acceptance speech.”

After his outburst, West, 32, apologized multiple times on his blog, to Jay Leno and to Swift — and declared he was taking time away from the public eye to “analyze how I’m gonna make it through the rest of this life and improve.”

It was announced last week that his Fame Kills tour with Lady Gaga had been canceled.

So it really sounds, to my overanalytical mind, like Beyonce is trying to defend her friend Kanye by saying that he took a stand for art, and while that’s noble, he was still rude. Am I getting that right? Because I don’t think Kanye was taking a stand for art. I think he was just drunk and dumb. And I definitely think B should stop talking.

Whatever. There isn’t even a word that can describe Kanye, his hair says it all. Beyonce’s video was boring, I like the song.. but standing in one place dancing.. “one of the best videos of all time” ??? really?? no. I don’t care for Taylor’s videos either, but they cater to her audience. There were much better videos out there that should have inspired people to have a tantrum if that’s what had to happen, but Kanye was being exactly what he is and I don’t have to say it.

  2. Who Cares says:

I thought she handled the awards with such class and dignity and now I’m disappointed. She can be friends with Kanye without condoning his actions.

This isn’t something you can ride the fence on. His actions were so wrong regardless of his opinion.

  3. Stephie says:

I think she should have kept her mouth shut. What art? Please. Any “class” she supposedly showed by her behavior at the VMA’s takes a hit downwards with this. Ugh.

  4. nAynAy says:

Not! He wasn’t standing up for anything. He’s just a BIG BABY! He pulled the same shit when his video “Touch the Sky”, (I think that was the name,) didn’t win the award for best video, so he went on stage and stamped his feet, just like a baby would do. He said the video costed so much money to make and Pamela Anderson was in it, which is why he should have won. GET A GRIP KANYE!!!!

  5. Jazz says:

He was standing up for cognac.

  6. nAynAy says:

I also heard somewhere that Evil Knievel’s family was or did sue Kanye, because the video was “portraying” his life, or something to that affect.

  7. vico says:

If you look at her face when this happened she was half smiling. She looked as flattered as she looked shock. These comments don’t surprise me at all. I think the gesture at the end was self-serving also.

  8. lisa says:

Beyonce Video is not art, its a bunch of crap, I saw Taylor Swift Video and it’s not art either, but very well acted. Art has nothing to do with these shitty vedios. Kanya West defended Beyonce against what he thought was hillbilly crap, both Videos are stupid and as far away from art as Mars is from Earth.

  9. Ash says:

Whatever, sometimes people say things with good intentions, but don’t always sound perfect. The look on her face was shock to me, but even if she was “smiling” it was probably because her friend came up and then ‘oh my God’ followed after he spoke. She was probably embarassed for him.

  10. lisa says:

They should have a Kanye West monitor at these events, everytime he gets up someone should block him from going on stage. He is such a looser, and has no basic manners.

  11. lennie says:

I agree with Kanye, Taylor’s vid is really really bad. I can’t believe that she wom over Pink or Beyonce. Anyway, Kanye did not have the right to do what he has done. He apologized for that, and he will pay for that for the rest of his career. I don’t defend his attitude, but I agree with him.

  12. Bam Bam says:

Kanye was standing up for his own arrogant opinion and now B is condoning because she’s still flattered by it. She should shut it and left it alone.

  13. Tess says:

    Vico:
    I think you nail it.

  14. M says:

LOL. I got skewered by friends and family for saying B wasn’t as shocked and surprised as she let on to be, and that she anticipated Kanye doing something stupid. This only confirms my opinion of that.

B’s always struck me as a diva who is out for her #1 only. She should have just kept mum and not have said these inane comments because she came looking golden after the VMAs … now, not so much.

  15. Firestarter says:

Art? Oh, okay then. Now that she explains it like that, it all makes sense now…….NOT!

  16. ak says:

“I knew he was standing up for art …”

    Celebrities are beyond parody. Really.

Beyonce, if you’re reading this, you’re a moron. A teenager shaking out the fries basket at McDonald’s is a more productive member of society than everyone at the VMAs put together. Grow the f@ck up.

  17. Guest says:

    So divaesque…girl please.

  18. Leticia says:

Several of you beat me to the punch.

I thought that Beyonce looked flattered, not appalled, during his tirade. She and he both take themselves way too seriously. I would like to him get tasered the next time he charges the stage. That would be funny.

  19. Ro says:

I used to think the reason she said things like this was because she isn’t to bright and is not able to word things so they don’t sound completely idiotic. But if you read her comment, without overanalyzing it, she simply said that her video was art and Taylor Swifts wasn’t. That is extremely snotty and probably just the type of person she is. She can’t help it.

  20. Nilber says:

She would have been better to keep her mouth shut. Although according to some news outlets Jay Z was pissed at her for not standing by Kanye. (Who is from “their camp”) Maybe this is her way to get back on his good side? Either way she came across as snotty.

Art? I guess that is in the eye of the beholder. I am sure all individuals that were nominated feel strongly about their “art” but they didn’t storm the stage.

Taylor Swift is still growing up and her videos are geared to her target audience as is her videos. Regardless of who won what award… no one should take away what someone has worked hard for. It was a pathetic move by Kanye and I believe that you reap what you sow.

  21. Skins says:

Her “Art”? Pretty full of herself isn’t she? Art is something that stands the test of time thru the years. Somehow I don’t think that vapid vidio will be remembered years from now. BTW, I hear she does not even write her how songs, but pays other writers for them and slaps her name on them. Not very “artistic” is it. I think she is talented but give me a break Miss “Artiste”

  22. fizXgirl314 says:

is it a coincidence that the “art” that he’s supposedly standing up for is hers? And her work is “art” just like that guy who makes statues of manure is “art”. well, the manure statues actually took some thought… I guess her music appeal to her audience of drunken club hopping teenagers though :/

  23. daisy says:

am I the only one that thinks ‘single ladies’video was trashy and inappropriate?she is a married women now and shows her goodies to the world and dances like a slut.Art?more like soft porn, just like most of her tacky videos

  24. fizXgirl314 says:

go slap on another wig and more jewelry dumbass… you’re not quite “sparkly” enough… what a juvenile.. *eyeroll*

  25. Iggles says:

Wow, everyone should calm done. No matter what people say on this incident, if it isn’t “Kanye doesn’t deserve to exist” then the person is skewered!

People are allowed to have their own opinions of this incident. Taylor Swift has long made nice with West, yet anyone else who doesn’t wholly condemn him is maligned..

  26. Lacy says:

He keeps saying shit like “Bush doesn’t give a shit about black people” I think its Kanye that doesn’t give a shit about white people and doesn’t think they have anything to offer in comparison to any black person.

  27. crash2GO2 says:

She should have just said Kayne is passionate or something like that if she didn’t want to dis’ him. Clearly, she felt flattered by his tirade, and saw a chance to make herself look good and took it.

Beyonce, best to keep your mouth shut and be thought an idiot, than to open it and remove all doubt.

  28. Lili says:

Sorry for post it in spanish, but i have many things to say..

  29. nj says:

I’m with Daisy. I thought the same way, but didn’t want to say so, but at least I’m not the only one. I do not think it is the height of class for a married woman to wear a leotard and wildly bounce and gyrate all over the place. And Beyonce is no spring chicken either. Whenever I see her age listed as 27 I giggle. She’s 35 years old. I’ve seen old footage of her and the way the years correspond with her height and fashion. Her father has shaved her age down about eight years!

  30. hunnybe says:

But what about all of the ‘Beyonce’s so classy’ and the ‘she’s moved up in my book ‘ remarks? Beyonce has and will always be a selfish and classless skank and the only reason she invited her on stage was because her daddy told her to.Not shocked at all.

  31. Ana says:

Well, now I’m backing to thinking what I used to about her.

ART? Puh-leaze!!! It did give me the first laugh of the day.

  32. AMW says:

Let’s not forget that Beyonce’s “art” was directly lifted from a Bob Fosse piece.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRm4evmgz4I

  33. orion70 says:

There are far, far more artistic videos out there that probably wouldn’t have even gotten a second glance at the VMA’s because they were not produced by the ones being backed by the record companies/getting the most play on mainstream radio etc. This isn’t about “art”. Or best video for that matter, really on either account.

But if you want to compare apples to oranges, a video is not more “artistic” simply because it’s filmed in black and white and involves a big name wiggling their arse around in a black bodysuit.

This comment might have passed if she’d said “he was sticking up for a friend”.

BTW, why is she woman of the year?

  34. Obvious says:

Boo on Beyonce. Taylor deserved the award. Not because her video was “art” but neither was yours. You stood in one place but you won video of the year, which puts you in “one of the best music videos ever” category that Kanye threw a tantrum about. You showed some “class” at the VMAs but you were trying to save face. You should have kept your mouth shut. You’re now coming across is snobby, bitchy and entitled, a female Kanye who can keep her mouth closed-but not anymore i guess.

  35. OXA says:

    What a load of “ART”

  36. TaylorB says:

That wasn’t about ‘art’, Kanye was behaving like the classic drunk dude at a wedding who grabs the mic during the toasts and makes an ass out of himself.

  37. Jazz says:

Leticia: I would like to him get tasered the next time he charges the stage. That would be funny.

That would be hilarious! It would be the only way to get me to watch any pile of puke MTV call an awards show.

  38. Cinderella says:

Jay-Z put her up to this. It’s ride or die.

  39. Oy Vey says:

Rude is rude is rude is rude. This wasn’t his first time for doing something stoopid, drunk in public. No one should be defending Kayne West and his cognac actions, especially Beyonce.

  40. fizXgirl314 says:

she’s always got way too many shiny baubles on her… is she trying to catch a trout or something?

Jesus woman, tone it down! you’re not in first grade anymore, you don’t have to pile on all the jewelery you own in one day…

  41. lena says:

Lacy this isn’t about race so lets not go there, Kanye is a douche and has been a douche to whites, black, etc… his douchiness sees no color. Besides his girlfriend is half white, if he were really a racist he wouldn’t be dating her.

As far as his George Bush comments go..he was only saying out loud what the people were thinking (the folks in new orleans), it may not have been the proper outlet, but his opinion did have a little truth to it… not necessarily about Bush, but about the people who have that power to do something/help.

  42. Skylar says:

I recently read a very interesting blog post about this little VMA explosion and I think it makes some good points: http://annehelenpetersen.wordpress.com/2009/09/15/kanye-vs-taylor/

Obviously, Kanye is a self-centered buffoon who can’t help but act out but I think that when he stormed the stage he really believed in what he said. (Ditto for the George Bush comment) It was totally tacky and tasteless but I don’t know why it’s such a big deal, I honestly feel like the George Bush comment got less media attention than this. It’s just the VMAs for christ’s sake and Kanye was right! Beyonce’s video is much better than Taylor’s. Yes, Beyonce’s video was based on a Fosse piece, but it was obviously an adaptation and the simplicity of it, the illusion of the one-shot video, etc, it was just really well done. and if you want to talk about derivative videos, Avril Lavigne released a music video very similar to Taylor’s years ago. Avril dressed up as two girls fighting over one guy (one skater, one not, etc).

I don’t think Beyonce was trying to say that Taylor doesn’t create art, I just think she was explaining that Kanye thought HE was standing up for art. I don’t think her opinion is clear at all.

  43. Skylar says:

Also, Daisy and nj…. are you saying that you think it’s okay for a woman to bounce around in a leotard if she’s NOT married? Is this because once you’re married your lady bits are your husband’s property? Why the distinction?

Also, there are PLENTY of MUCH MUCH more sexualized music videos out there and Beyonce’s are really more on the conservative side. “Single Ladies” isn’t even close to being the sexiest/most inappropriate Beyonce video.

  44. ashley says:

I always felt like Beyonce had too much of a surprised smile going on when Kanye jumped up and made an ass of himself. It’s obvious she loved the attention and now she’s using this to give herself a compliment….who knew booty dancing was art all of a sudden??

  45. karen says:

Standing up for “art”? So, now you’re this amazing artist? And, what is Taylor? Not artistic? Beyonce and her blowfish husband are so full of themselves. Her songs are just updated rip-offs of Motown girl groups from the 1960s. You aren’t the originator, you’re just an imitator, Beyonce.

  46. Westender says:

What Kanye did was just plain and simple RUDE!!! He was not defending art, if he had he could have voiced his displeasure at a more appropriate time and manner. I wonder how Beyonce would feel if someone did to her that Kanye did to Taylor? I doubt Beyonce or JayZ would put up with that!!

  47. valerie says:

for the record…”single ladies” sux! i always hated that song and me hearing it a billion times in the media is not gonna make me like it! i liked her old songs but now shes played out…

  48. Big Pimpin' says:

    1. i don’t know y people are getting angry at her. that comment she gave doesn’t defend kanye at all. this title was very misleading.

    2. she’s so gorgeous to me. but in those pics she’s starting to look old.

  49. gg says:

    lmao at fizXgirl314 ! LOL

  50. luna says:

Agree with M. From the early Destiny’s Child member switches (supposedly because Daddy Knowles wanted Beyonce to have all the attention which pissed off the other members), to the song writing credits scandals she’s had (non-famous artists complaining that she used their songs and added, like, 3 words, so she could list herself as a writer; Beyonce even gave herself a writing credit for “Silent Night” on her Christmas album for pete’s sake), Beyonce has always struck me as just looking out for #1.

I had to begrudgingly agree that she was being pretty classy at the VMAs. But now it just seems like she took the opportunity to look good and generous, but her ego just could not be suppressed, and she leaked some of her true feelings in these quotes. She looked better when she never said anything at all.

  51. Marina says:

Someone forgot to inform Beyonce that the words ‘if you like it then you should’ve put a ring on it’ repeated over and over again is not art..
PS her makeup is awful in that pic.

  52. daisy says:

I don’t think it was gross just because she is married.R u kidding?Single ladies video was disgusting.I almost had to look away a few times. I have never seen another video where someone pretty much starts pussy poppin in a leotard.thats pretty conservative, right?I dont know why,but she really grossed me out.and single ladies was a awful song.

  53. alex says:

I think she is just condoning him because he is black, it all comes down to race and age. Because I can bet you that if a black artist was on there old or young he would not have said a damn thing, he is a pathetic excuse for a person and he should not be able to sell another record.

  54. hunnybe says:

@ 52 she’s not condoning him because he’s black….it’s because he has his head so far up her butt pads he’s delusional and ignorant.

  55. The Truth says:

No one cares. People who do care, simply care because they don’t like Kanye. Kanye could care less about what you all think, however, he did feel sorry for his actions. He appologized, though I’m sure Taylor only “accepted” for the public eye.
    In short, Kanye doesn’t care.

    And that’s… the Truth.

  56. Non-Biased says:

Mrs. Knowles-Carter was being non-biased on the issue. Unfortunately for Beyonce, she’s not very articulate or PR savvy. What she meant to say was “Although Mr. West is a very passionate (‘art’) person, nevertheless he opted to express himself at the most inappropriate time.

As for the commentors who are saying they’re not referencing Mr West’s race, remember this….
(1)Janet Jackson was banned from the VMAs, while Justin Timberlake was still allowed to perform.
    (2) Jay-Z and Alicia Keys performance was ‘rudely’ interrupted by Lil Mama during the VMAs.

Where were the angry W—-People then? I am neither a fan of Beyonce or Taylor, but it seems rather peculiar that people are just a ‘little’ selective on who they attack!

  57. Non-Biased says:

I would also like to add, if you ask fans of Coldplay, Nine Inch Nails, Citizen Cope, and Rage Against the Machine, I doubt that they would agree that the ‘MTV promoting bubble gum’ music of Ms Swift is a form of art either…

  58. Todd says:

Strip away everything (wigs, weaves, support tights, spanks, layers of make-up) and Beyonce is a puppet left w/ a one or two octave voice. She doesn’t know what sincere is. Jay-Z is far from attractive but pulls some major rank in the music business, so she did something right. I mean she had to to keep afloat in the music industry some how! There are a million plus woman that have more talent than her. She just pimped out her soul for fame, and I also believe that whole group looks down on most people. (white, black, ect.) Just a bunch of bullies, as simple as birds of a feather flock together! …so of course she was backing up her hommie!!! West showed total disrespect twords Swift, that I’m sure we all can agree on and Beyonce wasnt able to speak the truth!!!!!

  59. Just Sayin says:

I am seriously SICK of hearing about Kanye & the fuckin VMA awards. Everyone just wanna takes little shit & fertalize it into a big crop of Bull Shit. Even Taylor is acting more behaved than anyone one else who still trippin on this old ass story & she’s the victim. Its over with & done. So the riot can forget it. Stfu & get on with your lives.

  60. Julia says:

I dont care about to many celebrity things, but this one confirmed that I will no longer listen to Kanye West crappy music or Beyonces. i never liked either of their songs anyway.

THE FACT IS BEYONCE: he DID take her moment away. She was in the middle of her speech! Your video didnt deserve to win, because it didn’t. If you deserved it you would have won. Maybe Kanye couldn’t control himself because he couldnt handle his giant ego being in the same room as beyonces giant ego. Just wasnt fitting.

    YOUR BOTH GAY FISH!
