Fergie romanticizes gangs, her life was almost ruined by crystal meth

Fergie has never made it a secret that she was once a pretty hardcore drug user. I’ve seen and read interviews where she’s discussed her drug usage, and she’s always made it sound like her teenage years (and perhaps her twenties) were a blur of heroin, crystal meth, cocaine, ecstasy and whatever else she could get her hands on. Though I don’t care for Fergie in general, I always gave her respect for her honesty.

Anyway, Fergie gave an interview to Times of London where she discusses even more details about her past. Fergie claims she had a “lost year” where she got caught up in the Hispanic “Cholo” gang. Fergie says about the time: “Oh yeah. It was very alluring, very romantic. Well, I romanticized it. I thought it was artistic. I still think gangsters are cute.” Um… Fergie? You’re still romanticizing it. Us Weekly has more excerpts from the interview:

Fergie opens up about her harrowing struggle with drug addiction in a new interview with the Times of London.

“It started with ecstasy. I loved ecstasy. Loved it, loved it. It was great at first, then it just went….” the Black Eyed Peas frontwoman, 34, says.

When high, she suffered from spells of paranoia and she blacked out the windows in her apartment, convinced she was under FBI surveillance. She also had delusions and once had an eight-hour conversation with a laundry hamper. Another time, a drug dealer held a gun up to her head as she tried to buy marijuana in a bad neighborhood in L.A.

Of crystal meth, which became her drug of choice, she says, “It ruins you.”

Fergie — who will star alongside Penelope Cruz in musical Nine this fall — blames some of her past troubles on being a child star.

“What happens when you’re a child professional is that you have to be, well, professional. You’re taught not to have tantrums, to always people-please,” says Fergie, who appeared in Disney’s Kids Incorporated from 1984 to 1990.

She admits, “That’s part of how I got into [drugs] later.”

Fergie says her “publicists get really mad with [her] for talking about” her struggles.
“But I don’t care,” she adds. “For me, it’s something I went through. It’s an epidemic, and it’s important to talk about it because it’s a very, very hard thing to stop.”

Fergie admits she’s still judged for her past even though she hasn’t used drugs in 10 years.

“I’m trying to get a thicker skin. I like to be aware of people’s perceptions of me, but when you put it as a priority, as a means to judging your worth, that’s when it can be dangerous,” she says.

“There’s no rule book on how to do this,” she continues.

While I doubt Fergie does hard drugs anymore, I think she probably still smokes pot and I’m positive she still drinks. A lot. A few months ago the rumor was that Fergie’s drinking and partying was doing serious damage to her marriage with Josh Duhamel. Josh strikes me as a really nice (albeit vanilla) guy, which Fergie claims she wants in a man. In the Times of London interview, Fergie sums up what she learned about herself during that wild time: “I started becoming attracted to qualities that didn’t involve guns and drugs and gangs. I changed my behavior through therapy and started becoming attracted to things like integrity and loyalty. Who would be a good father? Who would be a good husband?” Aw. That’s kind of sweet. Hopefully she and Josh make each other happy.

I am probably in the minority, but I actually like Fergie. She seems very honest about her life and the things in her past and present, and I cannot fault someone for that. I also think she has a small degree of talent and she and Josh seem to be a fairly happy duo. She does her own thing and doesn’t seem to go out of her way to be hateful to anyone, at least I have never read about her being a hateful, diva type.

One thing, her part bothers me. I don’t know what it is, if it’s the darkness of her hair or if she has thinning hair, but her part seems very pronounced and wide.

    What a dumb btch

  3. Cristina says:

she is hideously disgusting. I have always worked under the theory that meth caved in her face n she had it reconstructed

  4. Praise St. Angie! says:

I applaud her for not trying to gloss over her past, like some do. She seems like an OK person, too.

however, her denials of having plastic surgery are LAME.

She appeared on an old episode of 90210 in her Wild Orchid days, and the bf refused to believe it was her when I pointed her out.

Firestarter, I don’t like the dark hair, either. She looks much less severe with a lighter brown/highlighted blond shade.

I’m glad she’s willing to talk about it, and it is not surprising at all that her publicists would want her to stop. She’s walking a fine line here, and I’m not sure if she stays on the right side the whole time.

If she weren’t honest that she was drawn to the lifestyle, people would see right through her so she does have to be upfront about that. But at the same time, it’s too easy to just hear the stuff she said about it being romantic and cute and ignore the next part. It’s a toughie.

  6. Jessica says:

I have been in her shoes. I am just happy that she (and myself) were able to get clean from meth.

  7. Heavenbound says:

I do not know what it is but I do not like her, I’m not sure what it is, I get a bad vibe. Her face looks very masculine.

  8. BitterBetty says:

    LMAO @ Cristina

  9. GatsbyGal says:

Yeah, she looks like she used to do a lot of meth.

  10. Enonymous says:

Good for her. She seems to have turned her life around for good.

  11. Sumodo says:

Are you kidding? Not love Fergie? That voice? Welcome to the jungle? What a talent and glad she cleaned up!

  12. Fat Elvis says:

Looks like she kept the chola brows as an homage to her troubled past.

  13. Ana says:

“Fergie has never made it a secret that she was once a pretty hardcore drug user.”

More like her face never made it a secret.

  14. Lway says:

I am younger than Fergie and am also a recovered drug addict. I am happily married with 2 beautiful children and i’ve been clean for 8 years now.
I don’t go around telling people all the details – i am proud of the fact that i could break free from it – that is all people need to know,

It’s not something to “brag” about – it’s something you should be ashamed of Fergie! You failed, you were not strong enough to resist it – STFU already!

  15. Roma says:

Lway, while I’m proud that you overcame your addictions I have 2 brothers who still struggle. I don’t think it’s an issue of being weak and failing, it’s about addiction and chemical dependence.

  16. Praise St. Angie! says:

Lway, you’re busy telling Fergie that she “failed” and yet you claim to be proud that you could beat your addictions.

why is she a failure? and do you consider yourself to be a failure too, though you beat drugs?

she WAS apparently strong enough to resist it, since she also broke free from it, as you did. I don’t see it as “bragging” at all. she’s just relating her story of addiction and recovery.

If even one person decides that they could get clean because of her being able to, it’s a good thing.

  17. Firestarter says:

Look, being a drug addict is nothing to be ashamed of. It is a part of certain people’s lives. I do not say it is something to be proud of, but it sure as heck isn’t something to be ashamed of either. We are all human and we all have our Kryptonite. I think admitting to one’s failures and faux paux in l;ife makes us stronger, not weaker.

The fact that she talks about it could also be because she is ASKED about it, much like Robert Downey Jr, Angelina Jolie and other celebs, who will on occassion, talk about their drug past. If she skirts the issue, then people will call her a liar, if she talks about it, people want her to STFU. Make up your minds people, do you want glossy kitty and puppy tales, or the truth when a celebrity talks?!

  18. Lita says:

I get what Lway is saying (or think I do) – that you are a failure for falling into addiction and troubles in the first place. Society generally tollerates recreational drug use in the young – but once it is an “addiction” your life isn’t in your control. And that is certainly not winning, and it is widely looked down on (rightly, imo). As a sidenote, I’ve never known an addict that doesn’t wish they weren’t one most of the time.

I don’t like Fergie’s music at all (actually that’s an understatement) so it isn’t like I go in for reading about her much but she does tend to talk about (talk up?) her bad ol’ past a hell of a lot imo. There is honesty and then there is harping.
