Last night, Katie Holmes attended the Women in Hollywood Tribute hosted by Elle Magazine. Considering Katie was the cover girl for Elle’s Women in Hollywood issue, I suppose she was expected to show up. Which she did, without husband Tom Cruise. And without lining. Katie wore what appears to be Azzedine Alaia separates – a ruffled black skirt and a very thin black high-neck top. The top was completely see-through, so now we know that Katie prefers a simple black demi-cup bra. Her hair looks cute, though. She’s even smiling and looking less zombie-esque in a lot of the photos! Success!
In the Elle interview, Katie had claimed that Tom’s fashion sense was flawless, and that “he usually likes everything, but sometimes I’ll walk out and he’ll say, ‘I think that dress might be wearing you. You don’t need that…Tom has great taste.” On the red carpet, Katie told Us Weekly last night that it was not Tom who picked out her outfit – it was 3 year old Suri!

At Elle magazine’s Women in Hollywood Tribute Monday night in Beverly Hills, Holmes, 30, confirmed to Usmagazine.com that her fashion-forward daughter, 3 (with husband Tom Cruise, 47), helped pick out her clothes for the night — as is usually the case.
“She did!” she told Us on the red carpet. And what did Suri think of her Alaia gown, Hermes bag and Givenchy shoes? “She gave me a big thumbs up!”
“She loves clothes and picks out her own,” Holmes noted of her toddler, who also takes after her mother’s favorite workout routines. “She loves running and she loves dancing,” Holmes said.
Sources close to the Cruise-Holmes household have noted to Us Weekly that girly-girl Suri “hates jeans” and favors dresses (with heels!) from labels like Juicy Couture and Polka.
“Suri makes the rules and Tom and Katie go along with it,” a pal says.
Adds another: “She is not a spoiled brat, but she is the center of their universe.”

Eh, I don’t love Katie’s outfit (and by extension, Suri’s fashion sense for her mother) but I don’t hate it either. I do think Katie is a pretty girl who has the figure to make a lot of clothes “work”, but I don’t think she really “gets” fashion or has worked to develop her own style. Which is fine… there are a lot of women out there who don’t really care. What’s strange is that I think Katie sees herself as fashionable, and she thinks her taste is good enough to develop her own clothing line. That’s a strange dichotomy for me. Because I can forgive this blah outfit on a woman who doesn’t care. But if this is supposed to be high fashion? All I’ve got it a big “meh”.

I think she looks AMAZING! See what losing her shadow (Cruise) will do for her? She doesn’t have that ZOMBIE look about her and she actually has a sparkle in her eyes! Go Katie! (Good Bye Tom!)

God she looks miserable. If you cover up her mouth in pictures where she’s smiling, you’d never know she was smiling – her eyes look so vacant. I wish she’d leave that short, manic dude.

I like the skirt a lot and I agree that her hair and make-up look great but I could live with out the sheer top and bra. To me, it’s never a really classy look.

How old is she? IMO Tom Cruise sucked all the youth out of her. She could be 40. And I’m SICK of hearing about how wonderful she thinks live MARRIED TO TOM AND MOTHER OF HIS CHLID is *gag* We get it!!

Is Katie trying to say that she doesn’t have a professional stylist? Of course she has a stylist. It’s the stylist who buys her clothes, and Tom and Suri take it from there. (Where is Katie in this?)
On another topic, sometimes it’s hard to tell how these sheer fabrics will look in a photograph. When you try them on in the store, they look sheer but not transparent. But when a camera flashes on them, you can see through. So it’s possible she wasn’t aware of how that top was going to look in a photo.
It’s the same with thin-fabric skirts — they look fine indoors, but when you go outside with the sun at your back, they become see-through.

Love the top hate the skirt. I wonder if this outfit was Tom-approved? I picture her with a bulky black cardigan buttoned up to her neck that she rips off in the limo before getting to the event. (Kind of like jr high dances…except we didn’t take limos)

Two thoughts:
1) @ PJ – an average lady might not know about camera flashes and sheer fabric. A hollywood star who has walked countless red carpets (and probably has a stylist) undoubtedly already knows that. I think it was supposed to make her interesting – but it didn’t.
2) Interesting that she wants us to think of her as a fashion mind, a designer, and yet she tells us all about how her husband and her three year old pick her clothes. Way to use your brilliant fashion sense, Katie.

I have to agree with the boring comments. I don’t dislike KH but she does look really MEH these days. If you look at the Elle hairstyle feature (where they go through all her styles) she did go through a phase (when she was hanging with Posh mostly) of looking *really* good. Whatever we want to say about Posh Spice the woman does know her fashion.
The thing I find puzzling about KH is what it is exactly that she does to warrant so much attention and column inches? She was a television actress who married a much older, much richer, more famous, (and somewhat crazier) man and had a child who has now become very photographed. Which in itself after the initial whoopla is rather MEH. She’s a housewife and mum who works part-time…she just does it in fancier surroundings than the rest of the world

I love the skirt, and the bag and the shoes are nice, but that top just ruins it all… I would’ve gone for a nice singlet, or a blouse, that top just looks like an old, thinned out t-shirt. Bleurgh.

Thank you for calling it Firestarter! My sister always called the hot roller curls “doo-doo rolls”.
She, and her hair in particular, looks distinctly pedestrian. Not like a “Hollywood woman”. She needs a sassy pushup bra and some energy (and of course a divorce). Lack of food could be part of it. Also so could “misery”. Ana – she smiles halfway because it takes too many calories which she hasn’t eaten to lift the other side of her mouth. Everybody’s done that not a real smile thing – it’s when you feel like crap and have to attend a party. The eyes do not smile.
And the makeup job makes her look like return of the living dead. People have taken this “smokey eye” thing a bit too far. Not everybody looks good with soot smeared across their whole eye area like Darryl Hannah in – what was it – Bladerunner?
I would also like to take this opportunity to bitch about the damn photo ad that ALWAYS covers up everybody’s shoes in photos. Why is it you cannot close the damn thing??

I can’t believe “potato face” walked out in public like that. Not cute outfit,or original(OK,blame husband & kid). Perhaps was an obligation(another excuse). Girl just has no energy, spunk, originality, design concept… but tons of money to make it work. Didn’t! Sorry & boring wannabe chick!
