Miley Cyrus voted worst celebrity influence

Miley Cyrus’ desperate attempts at making sure no one dares see her as sweet young Hannah Montana anymore have been successful! Miley has been voted the number one worst celebrity influence by tweens and teens on AOL’s Just So You Know website. Congrats! No one has put more effort into successfully alienating their fan base and making sure they gyrate their hips into eventual irrelevance and bankruptcy. Your manager must be thrilled.

Who’d Miley beat out? Britney Spears and Kanye West, who came in second and third. That’s right, Kanye’s rushing the stage and stealing the spotlight from Taylor Swift (amongst all his other selfish and rude shenanigans) still doesn’t make him as bad an influence as Miley. So let that be a warning to you, 9 to 15-year-olds: it is more okay to blog in rage caps and get drunk off your ass at awards shows than it is to kinda-sorta-maybe pole dance. Frankly your parents would probably prefer you do neither, but if you’ve got to do one or the other, follow Kanye’s lead before Miley’s.

Miley Cyrus, one of Disney’s hottest stars of the past three years with hit records and hit films, has been voted the worst celebrity influence of 2009 by the very people who made her a star, tweens and teens, according to an online poll on Wednesday. Cyrus, 16, took 42 percent of votes in the poll for AOL’s JSYK.com (Just So You Know) website aimed at 9-15 year-olds, pushing Britney Spears and rapper Kanye West into second and third places, respectively, in a section on worst celebrity influences of the year.

No reasons were given for the poor showing of the singer-actress and the popular star of Disney Channel’s “Hannah Montana” television series. But the ranking follows a year which has seen Cyrus controversially dating a 20 year-old model, making “slant eyes” in an informal snapshot criticized as mocking Asians, and being accused of pole-dancing on a teen awards show.

Cyrus also came in No. 4 in the category of favorite female artist, behind 19-year-old country sensation Taylor Swift, “I Kissed a Girl” singer Katy Perry and R&B star Beyonce. The poll attracted almost 50,000 votes. “I think Miley is in an interesting space where she is trying to graduate from being ‘Hannah Montana’ and a Disney channel celebrity and coming into her own and having a career beyond Disney,” said Stephanie Cohen, editor of JSYK.com.

“I think her fans still want her to be the sweet Hannah Montana and she is trying to age up…Parents are definitely resisting it,” Cohen told Reuters.

All kids and teenagers want to be older than they are. It’s that constant desire to grow up too fast. And it’s the parent’s responsibility to do everything they can to slow it down. But Miley’s parents were chomping at the bit to help their little girl wear skimpy outfits and take inappropriate webcam photos. Because it gets her more attention, and attention equals dollars. Congrats, Cyruses!

The editor of JSYK goes on to talk about how well Taylor Swift has done this year, and she chalks it up to a few important things: first, Taylor is talented. And pretty, though she doesn’t mention that. But secondly, Taylor’s gotten most of her attention for coming across as genuinely kind, smart, well-raised with excellent manners, and she writes songs kids and teens relate to. I’m not really a fan of her type of music, but I’m going to force myself to be. I love that Taylor proves you can be rich and famous for being good instead of being naughty. And if I were a betting girl, I’d bet Taylor will be much richer and more famous than Miley in ten years’ time.

And to think… she probably doesn’t even know how to pole dance.

Here’s Miley performing in concert at the United Center in Chicago on Tuesday. I have no idea why even teenagers would find this inappropriate. Images thanks to WENN.com .

I was hoping she’d be voted worst celebrity teeth!

  2. Sumodo1 says:

Taylor Swift is an anomaly. Carrie Underwood, same. When you have a father who hosted a documentary on Hillbillies…well, the Cyrus family comes across as a bunch of hillbillies. Noah Cyrus hasn’t got a prayer.

  3. mhjmc says:

I don’t think she’s the worst, but I don’t think she’s the best either .. she’s a kid and kids will be kids .. she definitely doesn’t seem to be all that bright when it comes to making choices, but really I think that Ali & Lindsay Lohan are the worst (or are they not celebrities?)

  4. hannah says:

god, taylor is so much prettier and more talented. I think some of the pretty-factor is that she is classy

  5. Kayleigh says:

Ok when I was 16, I dont know abut you guys but I was insane. I smoked, drank, did drugs, got piercings and tattoos. I’m 21 now and I don’t even come close to partying like I did when I was 16. I can’t imagine what I would be like if I had all the money this girl does. I would have been high, drunk, and covered in tattoos by the end of the year.
I probably wouldn’t let a nine year old watch her, but I don’t think many 15 year olds (lets face it, these days 15 means they act 18) still watch Miley. I can’t blame her for trying to cut her ties to being a tween star cause if I was sixteen I wouldn’t be too thrilled about being idolized by little kids, but would rather be out partying like 16 year olds do.

Then again my statements all just prove I’m probably a really bad influence!

  6. mollyb says:

The good girl vibe was all Miley had going for her. Frankly, she is neither interesting nor talented enough to make it as a mainstream musician or actress.

  7. Green Is Good says:

We get it, Beaver Chompers Cyrus. You’re “not a girl, not yet a woman”.

  8. pickelhaube says:

    Kayleigh-

Maybe you were a little “bad” at 16, but you grew out of it, didn’t you? Probably because you had a good upbringing to fall back on. Miley does not seem to have that, and that is her parent’s fault. I don’t see her becoming anything but Britney v2.0, which is sad, but like Britney, I don’t think she has the mental faculties to reflect on her life, and make the necessary changes to become a better, more complete, well-rounded person. I don’t know if she is the WORST celeb influence out there, but I know I sure as hell wouldn’t let my child idolize her, because I don’t think that a 16-year old girl who writhes around half-dressed on a stripper pole is a good influence on anyone, but I’m sure I’m just a prude and living in the 50’s.

I also find it unfortunate that someone so unattractive is trying to get by on peddling their looks/body. She’d do better to get an education, because it’s all downhill from here, and she isn’t gonna get any better looking. She doesn’t have half the talent of Taylor Swift, and when you put those two side by side, Taylor will ALWAYS, ALWAYS come out on top, because sweet, classy and talented always trump skanky, hypersexualized, and overrated. At least I hope…

  9. pickelhaube says:

And is it just me, or are Miley’s eyes completely uneven? One is like, a good half-inch higher than the other. It’s so disconcerting and off-putting.

  10. TwinkleToes says:

By parading Noah out there, I guess they let the cat out of the bag concerning their questionable gene pool. Putting Noah out there was the Cyrus’ eventual downfall. Not to be mean, but kids are not going to look up to others who own a funky mouth. Especially not American kids.

  11. Michelle says:

While I’m not a fan of Miley, I don’t see why she gets so much shit for doing the same old boring jailbait schtick that virtually every pop tartlet has done for the last few decades (Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Madonna etc.) I’m not defending her per se, just noting that it’s really nothing new yet she gets a ton of crap.

  12. Mommy says:

    What’s wrong with her teeth?

  13. Sumodo1 says:

“…old boring jailbait schtick that virtually every pop tartlet has done for the last few decades.” Thank you, Michelle. It’s how they’re MARKETING her now. That’s exactly it.

  14. Firestarter says:

@Mommy- Well aside from being the size of floor tiles, nothing really.

  15. Sumodo1 says:

Say, has anybody “lost” their screen name and avatar like I have? I had to become Sumodo1 and I re-signed with Gravatar to have Shecky’s picture. Love to hear anybody’s similar experience!

  16. Wench says:

    “Beaver Chompers Cyrus”

    Hahahahahahaahaha!
That was too funny (and I’m so using that at the next available opportunity).

  17. Firestarter says:

Sumodo1- I was wondering what the deal was with someone heisting your name.

Can’t say that I have had the same problem, but maybe contact CB and let them know of the problem.

  18. nAynAy says:

Her dad must be oh so proud!

  19. Sumodo1 says:

@Firestarter I dunno what happened, but sometime last night, I went to make a comment and my screen name and avatar didn’t come up. I got a nice response from this site, but nothing they can do. No biggie, but Shecky, who edits my responses, was pissed.

  20. andrea says:

how did lindsay not win this one?

  21. Sumodo1 says:

The teeth on Noah Cyrus, in that picture where she looks like a hooker, looked like they were “bloody” from the red lipstick. I can’t erase that from my retinas!

  22. Novaraen says:

Lindsey didn’t win because she isn’t in the least bit popular with anyone. Everyone, including young girls…know that Lindsey is on a downward spiral that no one would dare want to emulate.

Miley here totally has “beat me” mouth. LOL

  23. birdie says:

The difference between Taylor and Miley is that Taylor is actually talented. She writes her own music, plays instruments, and has a lovely voice. Miley’s music and her packaging were conceived at Disney headquarters – the same place Britney and Christina Augeleria came out of. Miley is a cute girl, but her recent behavior has been sooo sleazy its hard to overlook. I felt the same way when Christina was in her “Dirrrrty” phase. She actually looked dirrrrty, and it was gross. Imitating strippers/prostitutes appeals to the lowest denominator, and really who wants that as their fan base or their image. I’ll tell you who – a girl who isn’t very smart or very talented who is being told what to do by her handlers that represent a massive corporation. With famewhores as parents, Miley never had a chance. In 5 years she will be like Britney.

  24. nAynAy says:

    @birdie:

Wow! You certainly said a mouthful, and I completely agree with you. You’re absolutely right!

  25. jule says:

I partied early as well, and I grew out of it….thank the lord. But not everyone does. I think Noah will be worse….

  26. kimberly says:

    Not worst tween stinger?

her stupid nasally voice and retarded songs should get her shot! Not killed but a nice flesh wound that would keep her busy for a time so another more talented person can take her spot in the tweendom.

  27. SolitaryAngel says:

BWAHAHAHA!!!! See what acting whorey will get you, Miley?

  28. Vermithrax says:

Because Kanye, Wino and Blowhan are so awesome, right?

    That’s AOL for you.

  29. WTF?!? says:

    Kayleigh:
Most of us had parents preventing us from engaging in the laundry list of juvenile delinquent activities you listed. Glad you lived to tell the tale and have cleaned up your act.

  30. GatsbyGal says:

If you need proof that she’s a terrible influence, just look at her poor little sister. That kid isn’t going to have a chance because she thinks that Miley behavior is not only normal, but awesome. I can only imagine how many other 8-12 year old girls think the same way.

  31. QB says:

She will disapear after disney and a couple of fail albumns and film. She is Hanna Montana, when you take that away from her she is Miley the annoying girl who some tweens like because she was Hannaa Montana. She is not a good actrees or singer , she is not a singer song writter like Taylor Swift and song by that I mean you really wrote the song and not your record label just asked the real writter to give you credit for it or you told him I want a song about my Break up.

  32. Rio says:

One of the main issues is, Miley Cyrus isn’t promoted to people of her age group. Performers her age (16) are marketed, at LEAST, to girls 4 years younger– generally 4-9. So think about that…she’s being promoted to 9-year-old girls. That isn’t an accident, that is on purpose. There are board members, meetings, focus groups that are devoted to marketing her teenage sexuality to prepubescents. She falls into the “aspirational” market– aka, girls ASPIRE to be her. That’s why she’s a ‘bad influence’…would you want your 8-year-old daughter apiring to be Miley Cyrus?
To pre-defend myself against any personal attacks (aka: “UR READING 2 MUCH IN2 THIS!”)…not only did I grow up a “Hollywood Child” but also was studying to work in marketing/advertising…until I discovered I had a soul. Take my word for it, every video/movie/advertisement you see is marketed to a demographic 5 years younger than the actors/models.

  33. She looks horrible. what is she trying to pull of by wearing this outfit. Its sad that her parents let her dress like that. At least look good in what you wear.

  34. sherifaerie says:

ok, i am gonna swallow my pride after many failed attempts at defending the Cyrus’, and say if this is the case, then out with old, in with the new. going into the previous debate over noah’s halloween outfit, i didn’t know the first thing about hannah montana. i still don’t, and quite frankly, i could care less. but it’s just really sad for me to see her flop so badly, though, and be judged this way by the very fans that looked up to and adored her before. if she is trying to mature and break free from her younger fans, i do agree that she needs to do it with a little less sleaze-factor, yes. as for her little sister, no, she doesn’t stand a chance, and if the Cyrus’ really thought they were going to have two celeb daughters, and that’s why they put her out there, then i’m sorry to say but can’t they see where miley is failing, and how exactly would noah do any better? maybe she could be “hannah dakota”, or something? lol but yeah, you’ve all managed to convince me maybe this family does need help after all. it’s really a tragedy though, seeing this type of “famewhoring”, happening, as some of you so bluntly stated. indeed it is… i gave them the benefit of the doubt, but a million or more tweens and teens can’t be wrong…

  35. sherifaerie says:

you know what, I TAKE THAT BACK. i’m a fickle fan. i really don’t know whether to love or hate miley cyrus. on one hand, i definitely see how she is f$%#ing up her career. i think if she wants to target a more mature audience, she needs to change her style altogether, and not show so much skin. showing skin for female celebs never wins them any respect, esp. from other females (as has been proven in the noah forum), and men will tell you they only like them for their looks, and not based on any talent (providing she’s got any). miley would do good to disappear for a while, get her s#@t together, and make a comeback. there is still hope for her… my little cousin meribel loooves Hannah Montana, and even has the guitar and everything. i really think it’s terrible to see a starlet like her flop in the face of so much fame. but as her popularity with the tweens and teens is fading, she CAN achieve a more mature audience. but if what she’s looking for is strictly a playboy photo shoot and becoming a pin-up on some beer guzzling fat guys garage wall, she should seriously contact hugh hefner and set a date.
but after reading the comments by some of the regular miley cyrus bashers on cele|bitchy, i have to say that NO ONE deserves to be called half the things that you know who you all are call her. i’m going to repeat my question from a previous comment i posted in one of these many forums… “do all of you just love to point out the negative in every celeb? bitch bitch bitch.” and boy, are you!!
i understand that you all feel very passionately about who influences your daughters, but dammit, save the hateful trailer trash bashing comments for those real redneck inbred hicks that exists. i do not think miley is ugly AT ALL, nor her sister, and i’m going to once again say BACK OFF.
@ princess pea and firestarter and all the regulars cyrus haters, find a life outside cele|bitchy and bashing on 16 year olds who still have a lot of learning and growing up to do. i never usually gossip in these things, only left one comment on PH in the whole time i went there, and then i found this site and saw what was going on with the latest in “teen starlet turned slut” news, and just felt really compelled to spill my guts on the subject. yes, you all have one thing right, fame IS a whore, entirely, and i guess since you’re not famous, that makes you better than them. or maybe you’re just jealous? i just can’t wrap my head around why people are so hateful towards other people they don’t even know. and no, none of you REALLY know miley, or noah, or their parents. they might be household names, however, until a tell all book comes out on any celeb, authorized of course, none of you know them, or any celebrity, at all. i’m sure miley and noah are total sweethearts. i’m also sure, as miley said herself (and i also said in one of my first comments on the whole subject, without even having read her quote), who are all of you to judge how her parents are raising her and her sister? She knows full well what the gossipers (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ALL ARE) are saying about her parents, and it’s time to stop bashing on them. but if it continues then all i have to say is get lives and go back to raising your own children.

AND NO, IT’S NOT THE UPTIGHT, IN DENIAL 50S ANYMORE, NEVER WILL BE AGAIN, AND PRAISE THE LORD FOR THAT!! (OH, AND TO WHOEVER SAID I HAVE KANYE WEST FEVER WITH THE CAPSLOCK–U KNOW IT! MAYBE IT’S THE ONLY WAY TO GET THROUGH TO YOU ALL!!)

    amen.

now let’s see if the moderator will post this one…. lol

and one last thing, seriously… i requested miley cyrus as a friend on myspace and heard her song party in the usa. i think she’s way talented, even though i am not normally into bubblegum pop like that. i have yet to hear taylor swift, but i’d also like to know what taylor thinks about being number one now that the hannah montana craze is over. i wouldn’t be surprised if the next thing you know, you’re all bashing on her!!

  38. sherifaerie says:

yeah, i worked hard on that speech….. guess the moderators thought they’d be cute and approve both versions, even though the bottom one is really the final draft.

so miley cyrus doesn’t write her own songs? oh no!! a lot of the songs michael jasckson sang weren’t written by him, but i’m sure i’m opening a whole ‘nother ugly can of worms there… judging from the way you bash on poor miley, i can only IMAGINE the bashing you’d do/have done on michael jackson!!

  39. Cheryl says:

Wait wait wait, I am sorry, but I would think Lindsey Lohan would totally beat out Britney!!! I mean, lets face it Brit has made some progress in the past year!

  40. SARAH says:

She’s been trouble for a while really, and it’s really disgusting how Disney and Walmart promote her still, despite everything that she has done. This girl’s fans are mainly compromised of elementary students, who need a good role model, not some little 16 year old who’s spreading her legs for a guy who’s 7 years older than her and flashing half naked pictures across the internet, saying ‘she’ll never do it again’. Then a week later, more scandalous photos surface.
Her and her family are just one big joke. Her father is only using her as a means of money and a stepping stool for his long-gone career as a musician. They should just know when to stop – and that’s now.
I see a future Britney in the making (or maybe her younger sister)

I actually like what you have bought here, certainly like what you are saying and the way in which during which you say it. You are making it enjoyable and you still care for to keep it wise. I cant wait to learn much more from you. That is really a wonderful web site.
