Tom Hanks’ favorite song ever: Beyonce’s “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)”

25th Anniversary Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Concert - Night 2 - Photo Room
I don’t know why this story is cracking me up so much, but here you go. Tom Hanks was backstage at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 25th anniversary concert when he was asked about his favorite song ever. Now, when I’m put on the spot like that, my mind goes blank, just as Tom’s did. If I was asked that question all of a sudden, I would probably stutter out something about The Beatles (maybe “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”) or the Stones (maybe “Wild Horses”). But most likely, my ming would go utterly blank, and there is a good possibility that I might just mention some inane pop song. This is what Tom Hanks did. His mind went blank and he named his favorite song as Beyonce’s “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)”. Oh, Tom. I can’t hate you:

Tom Hanks is down with the single ladies.

Hanks first racked his brain when asked for his favorite tune of 2009 while backstage at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 25th anniversary concert Thursday.

Then, the song came to him – though he didn’t know all the words.

“Dada-dada ring on it! Dada-dada ring on it!” he sang, as he tried to remember.

“That is a damn fine song, the Beyonce song … because it’s infectious,” the 53-year-old actor said of Beyonce’s No. 1 smash, “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It.)”

Hanks said “Single Ladies” resonates with him because that’s what he told his wife, actress Rita Wilson, when they first met: “I’m gon’ put a ring on that finger. I’m gon’ take that thing home.”

He also joked: “Kanye West has nothing to do with my embracing of that song.”

[From The Huffington Post]

While I’ll admit it is a catchy song, it shouldn’t make anyone’s top ten, you know? Tom Hanks isn’t even the only (older) male movie star to worship at the altar of Beyonce. Several months ago, reports surfaced that Tom Cruise attended a Beyonce concert and was “spotted doing the “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” dance”. Seriously. How much would you have loved to see that? You know what would be even better? Seeing both Tom Hanks and Tom Cruise singing and dancing to “Singles Ladies”. Best. Music. Video. Ever.

  1. Tom Hanks is a genius. He couldn’t have come up with a better answer. You just can’t pigeon-hole it - I can come up with at least 5 different scenarios. Brilliant.

  2. Tom Hanks dancing to it would be funny. Tom Cruise dancing to it is like watching any gay guy dance to Beyonce.

    I’d say Rosalita by Springsteen.

  5. LOL! I can see how that song might have sprung to mind, it is so much fun!
BTW,Hanks was a blast to watch on Letterman earlier this week!

(Just waiting for someone to jump all over the song and Beyonce any minute now for lack of anything better to do.)

  6. Hanks and I are the same age..and I have to admit, that song is incredibly catchy..but there is no such thing as a favorite song for me..depends on the mood, depends on the time and depends on what you are doing at the time and depends on who you are with ;) (The soundtrack for Forrest Gump rocks)

  9. I never miss a chance to post something about Tom Hanks. He is the coolest, isn’t he? And I’m SO envious of his wife that she has him to hang around with in life. Luckeeeee!!!!

I have such a mad crush on him and it doesn’t go away, nor does it fade over the years. What’s wrong with me?!?!?!? :)

  10. I totally agree, I adore Tom Hanks.

Beyonce is a pretty woman and sings and dances well, the song and the dance are catchy and little kids latch onto it, and I think it reminds us of all those jumprope rhymes we used to chant as children.

But big deal. It will not go down in history. It’s not a work of genius.

I would also love to see uptight Tom doing the hand-flick dance though. Might loosen that nail-studded corncob stuck so far up his ass.

  12. I like Tom, but I think Beyonce is the most overrated, obnoxious, talentless piece of crap ever. Her music is horrid, and I cannot understand what people see in it. And believe me, I like a lot of crap music, so it’s not snobbery or anything like that…she just sucks.

  13. Although I love Single Ladies, it’s probably not Tom’s favorite of all time. He probably went blank it picked a song he currently likes.

  14. Beyonce didn’t write the song, so I can’t be mad at her that the lyrics are stuck in my head, even though I would rather stick my head in a HOT oven than hear that infectious pop crap song again.

  15. Wait! Hold on a minute! This is really great of Tom Hanks. You know why? I have a boyfriend a little older than Tom who is STUCK IN THE 70s. His idea of a great song is “Sugar,Sugar” by The Archies. No Kidding. That’s why Rita Wilson is a lucky woman to have a guy who keeps current. And it’s hard on me, constantly trying to get my boyfriend to listen to Weezer!

  16. “Dada-dada ring on it! Dada-dada ring on it! GOOD ONE Tom.

I think the whole Beyonce thing is totally un-cool as Jen would say. OverRated as I would say.

  18. I love Single Ladies. And I’m sure Tom said it for the joke factor and not just because his mind went blank. What straight man admits to loving that song?

And Sumodo, I pity you. I hate that song with a passion.

  22. Talentless piece of crap?! Overrated?! I’d like to know WHO you believe to be talented. Beyonce has great singing talent and great dancing ability and great entertaining ability. She really blows me away every time I see her!

  24. As they say, “different strokes for different folks”. Tom Hanks’ response indicates that he certainly has an “open mind” and makes an attempt to understand current trends which is an admirable trait. I’m not a Beyonce groupie; however, I have nothing but the utmost respect for her talent and professionalism. She makes what she does look easy but it requires a great deal of work. I wish both Tom Hanks and Beyonce continued success in the future. They’re both “class acts” and they deserve it!!!
