Members of Aerosmith remain concerned about Steven Tyler’s health

It’s been a crazy couple of weeks for Aerosmith. First, according to Joe Perry, the members of the band find out via the Internet that frontman Steven Tyler is quitting. Then, Perry made public overtures of replacing the iconic singer, only to have Tyler show up unexpectedly at Perry’s gig, sing one song, declare himself still in the band and leave without another word. As if that wasn’t enough drama, Tyler later stated via his Twitter account that he was taking two years off from the band to focus on his own projects, “definitely ‘Brand Tyler.'” So, what the heck in going on?

As Steven Tyler’s bandmates ponder the future now that he has decided to take a two-year break from Aerosmith, they are also expressing concerns about the singer’s well-being.

“I think that he needs help and that attention needs to be put to his health,” drummer Joey Kramer tells PEOPLE.

And Kramer says he isn’t referring to the broken shoulder Tyler sustained when he fell off the stage during a concert in August.

Asked if he thinks there is something else going on with Tyler, he says, “I do.”

Recent reports in the Boston Herald and online suggest Tyler, who battled drug addiction in the ’70s and ’80s and checked into a rehab center last year to detox from painkillers, may be partying again.

Though Kramer would not say whether he has seen Tyler use drugs recently, he says he is concerned because the singer has “isolated himself.”

Says Kramer, “He’s got some bad influences in his life right now and he’s making poor choices.”

Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford tells PEOPLE, “His behavior is spinning out of control.”

Tyler’s bandmates say they haven’t spoken to him in weeks, but last Tuesday, he unexpectedly showed up at a concert given by Joe Perry. Tyler performed one song with Perry, then took off without saying goodbye.

“I don’t know where he is and what he’s doing,” says Whitford, who admits he, too, is “concerned about [Tyler’s] well-being and his health.”

Cancellations Galore
Though the band had been touring earlier this year, Whitford says that Tyler’s behavior has been “erratic” and “unpredictable.” He notes, “It wasn’t an overnight change. It’s been progressively getting out of hand.”

The result? “Loads of cancellations, canceled tours, and canceled dates,” says Whitford.

For his part, the singer has said he wants to focus on his own brand and possibly record a solo album; he is also working on a memoir. In an August interview with Rolling Stone, he maintained he was not on drugs and said he was “as sober as can be” when he fell off the stage.

On Monday night, he was spotted at The Pump Energy Food in New York City, where he ordered a fresh-squeezed juice made of carrots, beets and ginger. The following night, he attended a John Mayer concert with girlfriend Erin Brady. “Steven was having fun, getting into John’s music, and loving the attention from his fans,” says a source.

A rep for Tyler says, “He’s concentrating on his book right now while his shoulder heals.”

Meanwhile, Kramer, Whitford and bandmates Joe Perry and Tom Hamilton are considering looking for a new lead singer.

“It’s hard for me to imagine getting on stage without Steven,” says Kramer, who hopes that Tyler will rejoin them in the future. “He needs to take care of his health first and get help in order for there to be a future for an Aerosmith that includes him.”

Earlier this year, Tyler’s daughter Liv hinted that her dad was in a bad place. “In the past few years we haven’t been very close,” she said. “He has been going through a lot of things on his own and he has not been the… he hasn’t been around that much for us. So that’s been hard.” For a former addict, pushing away friends and family can often be a sign that they’re in trouble. Steven may be able to hide it from the public, but his bandmates and family know him best- if they’re saying they’re concerned, it’s most likely with good reason. My opinion? Aerosmith without Tyler isn’t Aerosmith. Period. If he doesn’t want to be in the band anymore, or needs time off, so be it. Replacing him with a substitute front man is a lousy idea.

Aerosmith without Tyler will be like Van Halen without Roth. It’ll still be entertaining and marketable but at 60% or so devalued.
It’s about time that freakazoid Tyler retires anyway. not for age’s sake but because he’s long since expired mentally (and visually).

  2. BtheG says:

I’m saddened by all this. Hopefully, as it had in the past, this too will pass.

I love AEROSMITH and hope this issue gets resolved soon.

Steven Tyler is Aerosmith! I hope he gets his act together because the band would never be the same without him.

  4. Granger says:

I’m sorry, I didn’t realize that was Steven Tyler. Isn’t that a WOMAN?

  5. barneslr says:

I adore Steven Tyler. I hope he gets his act together soon. If he’s not in Aerosmith, they might as well disband. I am not interested in them without him.

  6. snowball says:

He looks like he’s the love child of Mick Jagger and Keith Richardson. If he had a sex change operation. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen him in normal clothes, seems like he’s “on” all the time.

ITA – Aerosmith without Tyler is like Van Halen without Roth, although I did kind of like Sammy Hagar.

  7. UrbanRube says:

I would agree with Sue and extend it by saying Steven Tyler and Joe Perry are Aerosmith. You could temporarily or otherwise lose Joey Kramer and the other guy (sad I don’t know his name, and I’ve read books on the band–need more caffeine), but lose Tyler or Perry and it’s over.

  8. wif says:

Haven’t they had a good enough run as is? Why not just retire the band? Or maybe they just love it too much.

  9. Tia C says:

I’ve always enjoyed the way he dresses – all those colors and patterns, it’s fun. No, Aerosmith would not be Aerosmith without him or Joe Perry. I hope that if he decides (for whatever reason) not to be in Aerosmith anymore that the band has the good taste to not replace him. It’s so tacky when bands do that. Just make a new band with a new name. How hard is that?

I’m sorry to venture off on a tangent, but I just love that when celebrities and/or rich people have addiction issues, they get colorfully described as ‘partying’ whereas regular folks get labeled crack head, coke head, meth head, whatever. But the underlying issue is all the same, celebrity behavior shouldn’t be prettied up because their rich and/or famous and non-celebrities shouldn’t be denigrated with degrading names.
Aerosmith has had an amazing run for a band, if they have to go on without Tyler, maybe they should consider a new name. But maybe the other bandmates contributed a lot more to the band like songwriting, music composition, etc., I guess for them, it would be offensive just to say that the band centers around Steven.

  11. Stephie says:

Hope he gets through it. Aerosmith without Steven Tyler is just another band. (good band, but not _the_ great band Aerosmith is). Help is out there, I hope he gets some.

  12. Heather says:

@wif, I think they do love the band too much and they love playing too much to quit.

This is so sad! I’m only 22 but my dad loves Aerosmith so I grew up hearing all of their music. I love them too! They were my first concert 🙂 Anyway, I hope Steven gets better. He’s amazing.

  13. SolitaryAngel says:

I’ve always loved Stephen Tyler; I’m so saddened that he seems to be on drugs again. I saw him a few years ago and he said he’d never felt better and couldn’t imagine taking a drug and undoing all the hard work it took to quit them. He said he was happy to be a father again and wanted to be there for his grandkid(s) the way he hadn’t been for his own.
The first concert I ever saw was when Aerosmith opened for Styx waaay back when. I’ll never forget it, but there IS no Aerosmith without Stephen. I would think that his bandmates would concern themselves with helping Stephen get the help he needs, rather than writing him off and just going on without him! What kind of 40-year friendship is THAT?
    ***Get better ASAP, Stephen!!***

He’s so gross he makes ugly look pretty.

One never knows, but if his recovery has been compromised then maybe there’s a tacit understanding that that’s gets the rope cut. Maybe his fellow erstwhile ‘Toxic Twin’ has fears about that kind of behaviour threatening his own recovery, or maybe they’re going to end up washing their hands of him because they can’t that kind of downward spiral again. Maybe it’s a public ‘wake up’ message. I’m not choosing a side, but if so many people are responding to this situation in such a manner, perhaps there’s more here than we think. They’ve known each other for decades, so I assume that there is a love there–friends, family, co-workers, whatever–but it must be terrible to be around that. Sometimes you just get put into the unenviable position of making someone accountable for his actions, if indeed, this is what the situation is.

  16. Provocateuse says:

Granger… uhm.. I guess you haven’t been around for awhile… or for long… since Steven Tyler – the dude – has been rockin’ the same highly recognizeable look for almost 40 years.

  17. Babs says:

He’s totally on drugs. The ways he’s dressed in the photo posted above screams ‘Meth user’ to me.

  18. Granger says:

Provocateuse: Oh my god, crack me up. I was KIDDING! I know who Steven Tyler is. I just think he’s looking more and more feminine as the years pass.

  19. Provocateuse says:

oh ok whew Granger… ! LOL I was like, um, sheesh he looks pretty much exxxactly the same as he always did!? …which IS life imitating his own art: ‘Dude looks like a lady’ – as you said. (I have always thought he and Carly Simon could have been separated at birth.)
