Kate Gosselin refuses Jon’s roses at their divorce arbitration

The end of our national nightmare might be coming to a close very soon. In addition of TLC’s airing of the final Jon & Kate Plus Eight episode tonight, it looks like Jon and Kate’s divorce might be finalized a lot faster than everyone was expecting. Jon and Kate (and their lawyers) met on Saturday for a little day-long divorce arbitration. Jon, “Forever Douche”, decided he would try to bury the hatchet, I guess, and he brought red roses for Kate (photo here). Whatever happened to the roses, we don’t really know, although it’s assumed that Kate refused them (I imagine her hockey hair eating them) and both Kate and Jon left the meeting empty-handed. Their lawyers had initially scheduled two full days of arbitration, but apparently that got everything done in a day. Allegedly, the arbitrator is going to take about a month to figure out who gets what, and it’s totally conceivable that this whole mess could be over by the end of the year. Seriously!

Jon Gosselin showed up for a daylong divorce arbitration hearing Saturday with a bouquet of long-stemmed red roses for Kate – only to have her turn them down and later leave the courthouse empty-handed.

But while Jon wasn’t able to say it with flowers, the former couple were able to express themselves well in other ways, leading to a “successful and productive” session, his lawyer Mark Heller tells PEOPLE.

“This has been called the real-life War of the Roses,” says Heller, referring to the 1989 black comedy in which Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner played bitterly battling spouses, “and he brought that as a peace offering to break the ice and try to bring the war to an end.”

Things went so well for the Jon & Kate Plus 8 stars that the arbitration’s scheduled second day, planned for Monday, is no longer necessary. The arbitrator is expected to rule in a month, and Heller says “it’s possible” the contentious divorce could be finalized by the end of the year.

“It was a positive move in the right direction for us to bring them together to the mediation table,” says Heller of getting Jon and Kate into the same room for the hearing. “Obviously before two warring parties can smoke the peace pipe, they have to sit down at a table and address the issues that brought them to the skirmish.”

On the table: discussions of everything from custody, child support and distribution of assets. “There were a couple of very emotional moments, ” says Heller, “but in the end it all came together and concluded on a happy note.”

Jon was “very relieved,” adds Heller. Kate, meanwhile, left the courthouse without commenting, and her attorney declined comment to PEOPLE.

I think it’s pretty cool that Kate didn’t take the flowers and didn’t make a big deal about any of it to the waiting press outside of the meeting. She could have pulled out her ol’ faithful pity party, but instead she just hopped into her car, not even speaking to the press. That’s much better. Oh, wait. I spoke too soon. Sunday afternoon, a source “close to Kate” told People Magazine that Kate will end up with primary guardianship over the eight children. Here’s more from the “source”:

With lingering anger and bitterness, the marriage of Jon and Kate Gosselin is all but dissolved, as the reality TV pair agreed to give primary custody of their eight children to Kate, a source close to her tells PEOPLE.

“Kate is just relieved that a very painful chapter of her life is nearly over, and she is looking forward to building a better, brighter future for herself and her kids,” the source said after Saturday’s all-day mediation hearing in Pennsylvania.

During the hearing, Jon “didn’t dispute Kate having primary custody of the kids,” says the source, which came as no surprise to Kate. Nor was she surprised that Jon showed up to the session with a bouquet of roses. His lawyer said they were a peace offering, but Kate saw it as something else and refused to take them.

“This was the proceeding that essentially ended their marriage,” says the source. “Jon would once again resort to a publicity stunt.”

For f-ck’s sake, Kate. We get it. Jon is a douche. But did a “source close to you” really have to chime in and underline the point? I already know Jon is an a-hole. What I still have questions about is whether you’re just as bad, Kate. It would have been classier to simply not have any of your “friends” talk to the press anymore.

Kate IS just as bad, if not worse. At least Jon is wearing his doucheness on his sleeve for all to see.

  2. Ophelia says:

He literally does wear his douchiness on his sleeve. His entire wardrobe is made by Ed Hardy, sleeves included.

This fool must have the IQ of a gnat. (sorry to all the gnats out there). I hope he continues to act a fool everyday for ever. Gives me a little laugh and makes my life seem better. Of course Kate will have primary guardianship of the kids. How is Jon going to find time to be a father. His partying, womanizing, smoking, and just generally making an ass of himself takes up all his time. Maybe now those kids can have somewhat of a normal life.
    Heres hoping so.

  4. Firestarter says:

So glad this nightmare is coming to an end. Maybe then, we will have to see less of the both of them.

  5. DoMaJoReMc says:

What would have been a classy thing for KHate to do with the roses is to bring them home and distribute them among the children. It would have been symbolic to show the children that there might just be peace in ALL their lives one day out of all of this.

As far as KHate is concerned, I totally agre with GatsbyGal that we can see Jon’s true side. I don’t think we will ever see the real KHate. We see what she wants us to see. When she went on (I think) GMA to say that she can’t send any bills out because Jon took money, I actually felt bad for her when she started to cry. I really did. Then, not 2 hours later when it was reported that she played quite the DIVA at the TV station, I lost all sympathy for her. I have never looked back. She is AS MUCH of a douche as Jon, but she is just a bit more sneaky. F#*K them both. I pray for the kids.

That is all!! Have a good day!

I never watched much of Jon & Kate plus Eight , but was Jon a big smoker? Lately he always seems to be photographed smoking or holding a cigarette.

  7. Shelly says:

I’ll miss seeing the little kids. I think the kids will be sad when the show ends but only because the majority of their fun trips will end. They won’t understand why Mom can’t continue to take them to the beach or private tea parties, etc.

And to westender – Jon didn’t smoke on camera before all the crazy stuff happened. I haven’t seen him smoking on his filmed times with the kids but in every other picture of him, he’s puffing away. Gross.

I’m glad Kate got primary custody of the kids.

  8. Kitty Lover says:

I think Kate is better then Jon in every way. She didn’t comment in detail like he did, he also gets paid by tabloids for his “story” and she doesn’t. What the “close” family friend said about Kate was really nothing. At least their kids can say that mommy wasn’t on the TV telling everyone how much he deserves, what a liar Kate is, etc.

  9. HarbinsMom says:

Why is it Kate’s fault someone *close to her* talks to the press? She can’t control who talks and who doesn’t? At least she doesn’t hold hourly *paparazzi statements* as Jon does when he’s at home. I don’t blame Kate for refusing the flowers. It was a publicity stunt. He hasn’t done anything lately that hasn’t been choreographed by someone else. As for the comment she should have given them to the kids….uh, why? They were meant for her, not them. If Jon had wanted the kids to have flowers, he would have given them some. It’s painfully obvious to most everyone that Jon is a complete moron and Kate’s well rid of him.

  10. HarbinsMom says:

I have actually seen Jon smoking on earlier episodes. It was downplayed and didn’t happen often, but he did do it. And what’s worse, he does it in front of the kids. What a role model.

  11. elina says:

These two need to go away. Yes, he is a douche but she doesnt seem much better.

  12. Shannon says:

You guys are forgetting, TLC is still planning to go ahead with Kate Plus Eight.

  13. temeneos says:

He is a total loser, really, roses to a divorce arbitration?

How ’bout he apologizes (which I think he did already) and then lives a low key life that is respectful of his exwife and their kids.

sheesh, can’t be that difficult can it?

  14. Goddess711 says:

I hadn’t heard about Kate Plus 8 – I’ll bet Douchebag is up for that, more for him to go for “spousal support”. Wish he’d get hit by a bus or something already.

  15. Shelly says:

Shannon, TLC will not be moving forward with Kate + 8. The kids can’t be filmed anymore unless BOTH parents agree. TLC is in works for a solo show for Kate.

  16. original kate says:

    roses are red
    violets are blue
    jon wants to be famous
but doesn’t know what to do

  17. Just a Poster says:

    Original Kate! OMG
    BWHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!!

Hey I don’t blame her for not taking the roses. Personally, I would have taken them and bashed him over the head with them!

  18. Lauren says:

“Hockey hair” comment was hilarious! I feel so badly for the children. I used to feel sorry for Jon, but his behavior the last 6 months has been unforgivable. Imagine your father being regarded as a “forever douche”. That is just as damaging as the divorce.

  19. boo says:

I think Kate is the dirtbag here. She and TLC are really manipulative and the term “primary custody” is not even a term recognized in PA. Looks like Kate’s source is about as stupid as she is.

  20. lanette says:

it amazes me that Kate is getting blamed for a “source” supposedly talking on Kate’s behalf. How do we know if the so called source is even true? WTF?

John can take those roses and stick them up his butt. Kate was right not to accept them====he should give them to one of his chicks.

  21. Deb says:

Roses were for the tabloids. He wants to look like a good ol’ boy, never doing anything wrong. Can not blame Kate for not taking them. TLC should not deprive Kate and the kids of their lively hood. At least those kids can look back on their childhood knowing they helped finance their college and put food on the table, more than they can say for their dad, he’s just enjoying his “freedom” too much, to worry about how he’s going to support them now. Well done Jon, hope he won’t be too surprised to find out what karma is all about. I can picture him a lonely old geezer, wanting to be part of his kids lives, and they say, no dad, we just want our “freedom” (meaning, we don’t want to be strapped down to you in your old age) and Kate happily married to a wonderful guy. someone that makes her and the kids happy.
