Tom Cruise is trying to convince IMAX theaters to NOT show ‘Oppenheimer’

For months, everyone has been solely focused on the head-to-head battle between Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer versus Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. The two films will be released on the same day, July 21. The bomb versus the bombshell. But did you realize that one week before Oppenheimer vs. Barbie, Tom Cruise’s big new movie comes out? Mission Impossible 7 – Dead Reckoning Part One comes out on July 12th, and Tom Cruise insisted that it open in as many IMAX theaters as possible. Which is fine, MI7 will own the IMAX theaters in its first week. Then IMAX is switching everything over to Oppenheimer, because Christopher Nolan is basically an IMAX ambassador. All of this has caused a lot of angst and complaining from Tom Cruise.

Tom Cruise is pretty pissed these days. The star-producer of Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part One has been complaining loudly to Paramount executives and others about the IMAX situation, per multiple sources familiar with the dialogue. Mission 7 has booked most of the IMAX screens for the week of the film’s July 12 opening, but then on July 21 comes Universal’s Oppenheimer, which has locked in all the IMAX screens in North America and other territories for three full weeks. Mission 7, Cruise’s nearly $300 million-budgeted baby, is getting bumped.

This makes sense: Christopher Nolan is basically an unpaid brand ambassador for IMAX. He shot Oppenheimer entirely with the IMAX large-format cameras, and Universal dated the Nolan film in his usual late July slot in 2021 well before Mission 7 was dated in early 2022, following four separate Covid delays. Universal was quick to negotiate that exclusive IMAX window. But Cruise is used to getting what he wants (except an Oscar, of course), and I’m told he has expressed his extreme displeasure that the distribution waters aren’t being parted for the guy who “saved” theaters, as Spielberg famously declared. After all, Mission 7 will likely end up grossing more overall than Oppenheimer, putting IMAX in an odd spot and allowing Cruise to argue it makes business sense to give him the best screens.

Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick last year grossed $110 million of its $1.49 billion global haul in IMAX theaters, and other premium large format screens contributed hundreds of millions more to the film’s total gross. P.L.F.s and their upcharges are crucial these days to all movies, but especially to those like Mission 7 that are sold primarily as event spectacles.

IMAX makes up just a little more than a third of the large-format screens in the U.S., so Cruise has lately shifted his efforts to securing as many of those non-IMAX P.L.F. screens as he can. He’s been furiously showing the film to exhibitors in an effort to convince them to switch their plans from Oppenheimer or Barbie, which Warners scheduled opposite the Nolan film on July 21 as a middle-finger to Universal after it stole Nolan during the HBO Max day-and-date debacle.

Cruise is even personally calling around to exhibition and studio executives, per multiple sources. According to one top exec, Cruise has asked rivals to relinquish P.L.F.s or even move their release dates for the good of the entire theatrical business, something that is never going to happen. Cruise’s rep, Amanda Lundberg, and Paramount both declined to comment.

This is some fascinating Hollywood gossip. Sure, it’s not sexy or tawdry, but the idea of Tom Cruise trying to use his name and power within the industry to go behind Christopher Nolan’s back and convince theater chains to NOT show Oppenheimer in IMAX theaters? That’s f–king bold and usually Cruise is more diplomatic than that. Maybe Cruise’s math is that it’s fine to make an enemy out of Chris Nolan and it’s fine to make enemies at Universal. Weirdly, it doesn’t sound like anyone is convinced by Tom’s argument – while MI7 will probably be a huge spectacle-event, like… so will Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer, to my way of thinking, will be the big “dad movie” of the summer – every History Channel-obsessed dude will want to see Oppenheimer, probably multiple times.

Oppenheimer, Barbie, and Across the Spiderverse are the movies that are going to get me into a theater for the first time since 2019.
Tom Cruise and his scientology cult absolutely will not.

    • Blue Nails Betty says:

I will not watch a movie involving Tom Cruise due to his high ranking status and influence in $cientology. His involvement, in any form, is a non-starter for me.

    • Nikki says:

I was SHOCKED that almost everyone – including critics – LOVED his last Top Gun movie. I thought it was super formulaic and old time BRO- ey. I literally laughed uproariously once when everyone else in the theater was dabbing their eyes, so I guess we’re a nation of saps or I’m super tough hearted. SO MANIPULATIVE: give ’em father/son-vibe angst, self sacrifice, patriotism, and a good looking woman empathizing with what the HERO is feeling, and bingo: winner! I’m going to Barbie and Oppenheimer! 🙂

  2. girl_ninja says:

He’s such a grimy brat. It proves that he thinks he’s more important than any director or studio. Cause why would you f!ck with Chris Nolan? He’s a great director (though heavy handed sometimes) and story teller. What a weirdo.

  3. Eurydice says:

Interesting, he’s going to “save” the theaters by crowding out everyone’s films but his own.

  4. ThatsNotOkay says:

Tom just thinks too highly of himself. And, no, he didn’t need to hear that he “saved” the movies, because that’s what he believes–that he’s the savior of the world. And he’s not. He’s just a dude who benefits from forced slave labor, ponzi schemes, intimidation, and legacy insanity. Cruise might be a “star,” but Nolan is a brand–a once-in-a-blue moon experience. Get over yourself, Tom.

    • Digital Unicorn says:

Yeah and let’s not forget that this is number eleventy billion in the long running Mission Impossible franchise – Oppenheimer is NOT part of a franchise thats basically an eg stroking experience for a middle aged man. Nolan is likely to win lots of awards for this – this is Cruise being a petty b!tch cause he knows this movie isn’t going to be a blockbuster – people are tiring of the franchise.

      • Rapunzel says:

Cruise is 60 now and actually edging out of middle aged into AARP age. His movies are not only ego stroking but some desperate attempt on his part to stay young. Bro…you are grandpa age now. Embrace it!

      • HeatherC says:

@Rapunzel: You can join AARP at 50 I think so he’s well entrenched in cantankerous old man territory now.

    • Deering24 says:

      1) Why did Spielberg say Cruise “saved” theaters? Top Gun: Maverick benefited big time from being released the first summer covid was dying down and restrictions were on their way out. Any big-budget, well-reviewed movie would have done well then.

      2) I have issues with Nolan as a director, but this is one stupid-ass hill to die on for Cruise. What, like MI: Dead Reckoning is not going to mint money hand over fist? Proof, once again, that mega-stardom really distorts one’s sense of perspective and reality.

  5. Ameerah M says:

I actually have zero desire to see Oppenheimer, but I hope Cruise fails in his little machinations because it’s pretty underhanded

    • HeatherC says:

I want to see Oppenheimer but I was wishy washy on in IMAX, regular theater, drive in (I have one right by me!) or wait for it to stream but because I’m petty and all, I’m going to see it in IMAX. If it’s good I may see it twice.

      • dj says:

I will definitely see Oppenheimer (now on IMAX). I see Scientology has actually convinced Tom that he IS Xenu. Sorry Tom none of my $$$ will you be getting within this lifetime.

  6. paintergal says:

Haven’t given a dime to Tom Cruise in 25 years, won’t start now.

    • Puppy1 says:

I’ve never seen one of his movies in a theater, just bits & pieces if my hubby is watching one at home.

I can’t stand that little pipsqueak. No talent whatsoever from what I’ve seen and totally arrogant. Treats women like shit too.

  7. SarahCS says:

Wow, this is fascinating. He’s lived in his scientology bubble for so long plus the Hollywood bubble (I’m still uncomfortable at the reception he got at the big event earlier this year – around the oscars I think – when all the other stars wanted their picture with him) he’s very used to getting his way. I will absolutely not be going to see anything that he’s in. He’s on the list along with Pitt and Depp.

As for Oppenheimer, I need to know more about the story. Given the horror that was unleashed I’m not yet sure I want to see it. Either way Barbie is higher on my summer movie list, the trailers have absolutely sold it to me and I can’t wait.

    • Blue Nails Betty says:

Right? The sudden, very public adoration of Pitt and Cruise this past spring was an eye opener.

    • lucy2 says:

Same here, I don’t want to pay to see any of the 3 of them.
I DO want to pay to go see Barbie, and am going to round up a group of friends to go with me, I hope.

I like a lot of Nolan’s films, and his IMAX filming is fantastic, but I don’t know if I want to see Oppenheimer.

    • Jais says:

When Spielberg told him he saved movies, it went strait to his head🙄

  8. Shawna says:

Yeah, this makes me want to go see Oppenheimer in IMAX now. Streisand effect much, Tom?

  9. Haylie says:

This is the natural result of everyone blowing smoke up threads of this deadbeat dad in a cult, telling him he saved the film industry from the pandemic.

  10. HeyKay says:

    Cruise might be overstepping here.

Nolan is highly thought of as a Director and no CoS to deal with = Bonus.
Cillian Murphy, the lead in Opp. is very talented. Opp is much more of an IMAX film to me.

Cruise and the endless MI movies can easily be enjoyed at home on a 50″ tv.
After all the plot is always the same.

  11. Blue Nails Betty says:

Honestly, I don’t know why the marketing depts of Barbie and Oppenheimer don’t team up to do an ad promoting both movies. It would 1. be hilarious and 2. shut down Tom’s tantrum.

  12. Lattenow says:

I can’t believe Tom cruise is still a thing 🙄

  13. Vi says:

I hope Tom cruise wins. This is a big problem. Amc theaters sent out a survey about it just last week.
The problem is there aren’t enough screens. So your movie gets A WEEK!!!! Unless you get lucky and you might get 2 weeks in a premium format. Some movies have gotten less than a week.
The real problem is dolby and real imax. It’s 1 screen per theatre. If your audience can’t make it the first week then you are stuck with regular screen. Then they won’t bring the movie back when there isn’t competition.
Example the little mermaid has already been bumped from dolby to make way for I think “transformers”. You can still catch it in 3d. And The last “fast and furious” was bumped for the “little mermaid”. Well I refuse to watch fast and furious on a regular screen so they lost my money. It’s not fair. Cruise and nolan are the right people to fight it out. They both care about film and experience.

Hopefully this means old movies will get a second chance.
I would love to see Yogi Bear with my new family member in 3d. Yogi bear had some of the best 3d I have ever seen. Jackals 3d is number 1. It was gross and I had to walk out but you really got your money’s worth.

  14. Izzy says:

The ONLY one of those three movies I have any interest in seeing is Oppenheimer, and now I will definitely see it in IMAX because it will piss of Tom Cruise and I am petty like that.

  15. Mrs.Krabapple says:

I wish people had not gone out to see the Top Gun: ME movie last year, it has only emboldened Cruise to think he’s on the same level as Nolan? I mean, Disney can demand that theaters reserve screens for *their* movies, but who the hell will by-pass a Christopher Nolan movie for yet another dumb Tom Cruise personal role-playing, ego-boosting, no-I’m-not-standing-on-a-box-to-look-taller, fantasy?

  16. j.ferber says:

Until I learned better on this site, I really DID believe that Tom did all his own stunts. Now I know it is a brainwashing mantra that can’t possibly be true given his age and true profession as an actor and not a stuntman.

  17. Mamabob says:

I refuse to watch any TOM Cruise movie be it on the cinema or at home. Not funding that cult.

  18. LupeBS says:

Maybe we can just skip that and just put the Barbie movie in all the IMAX theatres? I’d pay to see that!

  19. Kimberly says:

I’m not paying a dime to watch ANY of these 3 movies in cinema……But the rumors/drama are entertaining LOL!! Tom Cruise VS Nolan, something I thought I’d never see (IF this is actually true).
I’d stream these movies on one of these movie sites for free. Times are hard in my country & inflation is beyond ridiculous.
