Carrie Underwood and her Ottawa Senators hockey star boyfriend Mike Fisher got engaged over the weekend. Fisher confirmed the engagement before the Senators game on Sunday. I’m getting different dates on when they started dating, though. Apparently, they met for the first time in March of 2008, but didn’t start dating officially until months later, maybe? I’m not sure. Carrie has previously dated Tony Romo and Chace Crawford. Carrie is 26 years old and Mike is 29 years old, and this would be the first marriage for both.
Senators heartthrob Mike Fisher and his country singer superstar girlfriend Carrie Underwood are engaged to be married.
Fisher confirmed their engagement just moments ago as the Senators prepared for tonight’s game against the Boston Bruins at Scoriabank Place. Responding to questions, he said he popped the question to Underwood on Sunday, but declined to offer any other details at this point.
“It’s true,” said Fisher. “We’re both obviously excited and very happy.”
Senators teammate Chris Neil said Fisher called him not long after popping the question.
“I think it’s great. It’s a long time coming. There’s going to be a lot of broken hearts in Ottawa with all those girls who are in love with Mikey,” said Neil.
The blogosphere had been alive and buzzing since Sunday with rumours the celebrity couple had become engaged. The rumours began spreading after a friend of Underwood’s family congratulated the former American Idol and the Senators centre on their upcoming marriage on his Twitter page last night.
This morning, a source close to the couple confirmed to the Ottawa Sun that Fisher popped the question and Underwood had accepted the proposal.
Underwood, who makes her home in Nashville, was in Ottawa through the weekend and was on hand for the club’s 4-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild Saturday at Scotiabank Place. It’s not known if she will also be at tonight’s game against the Boston Bruins.
The couple has been dating for approximately a year. They have kept their relationship largely out of the media — quite an accomplishment for one of Nashville’s hottest stars and one of the NHL’s most eligible bachelors — but had recently begun speaking in public about their love affair.

Congratulations to the happy couple. I don’t know that much about them, so I take that to mean that they aren’t out there doing constant PDA every two seconds. As a matter of fact, I couldn’t even find one photo of the two of them together, so they must take pains to not be photographed together. Carrie lives in Nashville, while Mike, obviously, lives in Ottawa. Somehow, they made their long-distance relationship work, and Carrie is often spotted at Mike’s games. Mike must not go to too many events, because I couldn’t find even one photo of him in a suit. There is this photo of him (below)… and man, he’s really cute. Way to go, Carrie.

I never like the pairing of athletes and artists. Athletes tend to be very needy and out of sorts once their very short careers are over. Carries career is just starting to gain more stardom, I don’t see this working out happily ever after.

Hope it works out! Not saying it wont but if long distant relationships are quite different then living with someone…EVERDAY!! Thats when you really get to know someone. I hope they get to spend some serious time together before they make it official. Best of luck Carrie!!

There are indeed broken hearts in Ottawa… my coworker is one of them. Ah well, I kind of relish the thought of a celeb (particularly a kind of diva-esque one) in town more often. It could mean awesome gossip, right in my hometown!

Not only is Mike Fisher easy on the eyes, but he’s a genuine great guy. He’s active in children’s charities in Ottawa and with “Hockey Ministries International” (a Christian organization I’m not familiar with).
Plus, he *might* make the Canadian Olympic men’s hockey team.
