Angelina Jolie named ‘beauty icon of the decade’

Angelina Jolie films extra scenes for her film Salt on a large ship on the Hudson River, bundled up in a thick coat in between takes

This “beauty icon of the decade” poll kind of blows even if I agree mostly with the results. The poll was conducted by Superdrug, which is like Britain’s CVS or Walgreens, and they only polled 3000 people in the UK. So, yeah. Cheesy poll. The results are… surprising, I guess. Angelina came in first place, which I guess I’ll buy. Then Jennifer Aniston comes in second. Iconic beauty? Er… okay. The rest of the top three is Kylie Minogue, Catherine Zeta Jones and Cheryl Cole. All pretty women, of course. But iconic beauties? Isn’t Kylie pretty much considered beautiful because she has a really great ass? And I would describe Zeta-Jones’ beauty as “timeless” but not “iconic”. And Cheryl Cole? I still don’t understand the British obsession with that woman.

Angelina Jolie has been named the ‘beauty icon of the decade’ in a new poll, ahead of love rival Jennifer Aniston. According to Superdrug, who commissioned the research, which saw 3,000 people questioned, Jolie’s famous pout, thick hair and “strong character” made her the envy of women around the world.

Steve Jebson, Commercial Director for Superdrug, said: ”Angelina Jolie is not a conventional beauty but her strong character shines through her fabulous features to give her a unique standing in the beauty world. ‘It’s worth noting that while everyone talks about Angelina’s pout we find that its her long thick lustrous hair that really makes British women envious, as well as a figure made for red carpet posturing.”

”It is great to see that the list is packed with women of all ages and coloring in the top twenty, from the ageless beauty Joanna Lumley to new national sweet heart Cheryl Cole.
Australian pop princess Kylie Minogue came third in the poll followed by Welsh actress Catherine Zeta Jones.”

Cheryl Cole, The Girls Aloud star and X Factor judge, came fifth. Actress Scarlett Johansson was at six, followed by Keira Knightly who was named Beauty Icon of 2008 in Superdrug’s research. American superstar Beyonce was eighth while Armageddon star Liv Tyler was at nine. Oscar winning actress Halle Berry completed the top ten.

Other stars to feature in the top 20 include Titanic star Kate Winslet, Transformer beauty Megan Fox and This Morning presenter Holly Willoughby.

A spokesman for Superdrug added: ”This is the third time we have run an annual poll to find the face of the year, with previous winners including Cheryl Cole and Keira Knightley. This year to celebrate the new decade we decided to look past the face du jour and see who has really struck a beauty chord. But the message from our stores for 2010 is you don’t have to be a film star or celebrity to be a beauty icon. Every single woman in Britain can walk into their local Superdrug and pick up products that will give them the confidence to turn heads on the high street. Unfortunately, we can’t promise that any of them will end up marrying Brad Pitt.”

[From The Telegraph]

Haha, Kate Beckinsale made the list? For goodness sake, the British were just desperate to get more British women on the list. Why not Helen Mirren? And why isn’t Kate Winslet higher on the list? She’s more iconic than Kylie Minogue or Cheryl Cole – Winslet is an iconic beauty internationally, not just some local beauty. Oh, but I love Joanna Lumley, better known as Patsy in Absolutely Fabulous. She’s so brilliant, I just love her to death. Team Lumley!

only 3,000 people made this decision? not worth anyone elses time I guess…

  2. truthSF says:

Come on, Jennifer A., Beyonce, and Megan Fox do not belong on that list.

  3. Sumodo says:

No Diana Rigg? Oh, the Brits have short memories! But, at least Patsy (Joanna Lumley) made it.

  4. Susette says:

Love, love, love Joanna Lumley! It really is an odd list. I’d say a lot of truly iconic beauties were left off of there. Eh. A drug store poll – Whadya’ expect?

  5. lrm says:

    kate blanchet. period.

  6. lisa says:

She is really an amazingly beautiful woman. A woman unique and not like anyone else. And she should be on that list. She is one of a kind.

  7. Enonymous says:

This list is byullsh*t, most of these people in the list are average or below average in the looks department, I mean Jennifer Aniston in second place that just says everything. She is as beautiful as my dog’s hairy ass.

  8. Pont Neuf says:

More than a “Beauty Icon” list, this seems to be a “UK daytime television/housewife favourites” list. In fact, I’m surprised that Kerry Katona didn’t make it.

People like Myleene Klass, Nigella Lawson and Holly Willoughby are about as relevant (not to mention, as beautiful), as a bowl full of mouldy porridge.

Also, as far as I know, about 3/4 of the women on that list are FAR from being natural beauties. Scrap the make up that’s been applied with a trowel and, then, tell me whether you’d call the horrid creature underneath ‘beautiful’ (this, in particular, applies to Donkey Mouth Minogue and the chavtastic Mrs Cole).

Still, I agree with the election of Angelina Jolie. Surgery or no surgery, no one can deny that she is a beautiful woman with amazing eyes.

  9. sandy says:

i so agree with this decision, she is beautiful inside and out. somebody needs glasses, Jennifer aniston? lol, second? hahahahahahahaha, rotflmao, getting off the floor now. whew!! thanks for the laughs.

  10. Belle says:

    She’s really beautiful.

  11. PJ says:

If “iconic” means “most imitated,” I’d vote for Jolie and Aniston too.

Jolie’s ultra-full lips started such a strong trend that there’s hardly an actress left who has NOT had her lips plumped.

Aniston’s hair — both coloring and style — has also been widely imitated; highlighting has been hot for most of the decade.

  12. Leek says:

That’s kind of funny that they keep raving about Angelina’s “thick” hair. I saw a special about the stylists of famous people and her hair guy was saying that her hair is so straight and flat that it just lays there. Her hair is always put in rollers to give it body.

I’m a fan and I think she’s beautiful, too, but it’s also important for us not on lists to remember that no one is perfect.

  13. Eileen Yover says:

    No Kate Blanchett? Whatev.

  14. Dhavy says:

I agree with you TruthSF, I’ll give Megan Fox a maybe but Aniston? give me a break! and I can’t believe Beyonce got more votes than Hale Berry.

Way to go to Angelina, she’s beautiful

  15. Catherine says:

The list has some very lovely ladies. Angelina is definitely gorgeous.

  16. Goddess711 says:

Now that’s a sad, sad confirmation of society in the past decade. None of these women are “iconic” in any sense of the word. *Heavy sigh*

  17. KansasRefugee says:

Is anyone else troubled by the fact this is a focus on these women’s looks?

And Angelina Jolie valued for her character? Huh? Didn’t she pursue someone else’s husband? And adopt more children than she and her husband have time to care for?

  18. Kiki says:

Catherine Zeta-Jones should have been first.

  19. mockey says:

what is their definition for the word iconic mean???
    barf, this list is bullshit.

  20. lucy2 says:

I do think Angelina is beautiful, especially a few years ago, not quite as much now. Funny they mention her hair because it’s not as nice as it once was. But I would not vote her most iconic beauty, whatever that means. Of the list, I think Halle Berry or Charlize Theron would get my vote.
Most of the women on the list are very pretty, like Aniston, Kate Winslet, Beyonce, but I wouldn’t call them iconic beauties.
I’ve always thought Kate Beckinsale was very pretty, but she’s been on my sh!t list recently with a couple of stories about her being a bad pet owner.

  21. LOVE ANGELINA says:

So happy that Angelina came in number one, I think she’s pretty great too. Can’t wait till she get’s her Star on the HW walk of fame. Truly an inspiring young woman.

  22. Fat Elvis says:

Charlize Theron should have been much higher on the list, in my opinion. Kylie Minogue and Jennifer Aniston aren’t even in the same universe when it comes to pure physical beauty.

  23. ben says:

    my list

    1 penelope cruz
    2 denise richard
    3 mia sorvino
    4 emmy rossum
    5 anne hathaway
    in no particular order

  24. Eileen Yover says:

    My top 5 would be:

    Kate Blanchett
    Merly Streep
    Halle Berry
    Aishwarya Rai
    Charlize Theron

  25. Cheyenne says:

I can’t think of any actress nowadays I’d call an iconic beauty although Jolie, Berry and Zeta-Jones come close. Aniston had a hair-style that a lot of people copied but it’s dated now. And Megan Fox and Beyonce just look cheap.

  26. jen says:

    Oooh top 5, difficult…OK lemme see here…

    1. Angelina Jolie
    2. Marion Cotillard
    3. Jennifer Connelly
    4. Cate Blanchett
    5. Penelope Cruz

    (this is fun! lol)

  27. Pickel says:

@PJ – um, really?? “Jolie’s ultra-full lips started such a strong trend”…yeeeeaaahhh. 1 – her lips are considered ultra-full only by typical European standards, and 2 – no other woman in the history of the celeb world has ever had “full” lips? This feature has never before been seen on any black woman in Hollywood? How ridiculous is it that only when a feature that is common to black and other women of color appears on a white woman, it becomes the new trend??? Black women and other women of color with this natural attribute just get pushed to the side for the one white woman in Hollywood with an above-average lip size (which admittedly are just “okay”), and the latter is credited with inspiring others to plump their lips??

Geez, give credit where it’s due! Next you’ll be saying that having a nice round booty is the “it” look just because Coco or someone equally ridiculous is the true source of inspiration. And Bo Derek? Those braids of hers in the 70s is what inspired black Americans to style theirs the same, right? They were just copying her trendsetting style…right? Funny how nobody ever thought these features were sexy or to be coveted until a white woman stepped onto the scene with them, and it’s only then that the rest of the world says “now that’s something to imitate”!

    Give me a freakin’ break.

  28. Etienne says:

That is funny. Her big face made of plastic. Scoud have been born boy.

Face is so big. No feminine.

  29. Bete says:

It’s interesting to see that there are no European actresses on the list. If this was an unbiased list, it would have included women like Monica Belluci (she was in the Matrix, but besides that, has been a Dior ambassador and was rumored to have more symmetrical lips than Angelina), Sophia Loren (for appearing in one of the Pirelli calendars). Beyonce is overrated. Eva Longoria is practically a midget.

  30. anon1000 says:

jennifer aniston??? jennifer clown face maniston??????

  31. LOL says:

A bunch of English tampon-buyers voted for the gal they saw most often on the check-out stands. Wow, what an honour.

  32. YAY! says:

Jennifer Aniston..ok must be a PITY VOTE !!

  33. NicoleAM says:

Lately AJ looks like a skeleton w/ stringy hair. I don’t know where they got full from. Scarlett gets my vote.

  34. justathought says:

i am fine with Jolie being top on this list…. she is beautiful, mysterious and a great mom but Charlize Theron as #20?! Goes to show you they always save the best till last….LOL!

  35. Lita says:

@Ben – Denise Richards? Different strokes for different folks and all that .. I’m curious though, is it her looks that you like, or something else? She sort of seems .. common and uninteresting to me.

  36. mooncake says:

AJ deserves the top spot. She’s beautiful! But Maniston on #2? Come on! Audrey Tautou is pretty too.

  37. Ophelia says:

I agree with AJ being at the top, but Kate Winslet should be way up there, and how is Charlize Theron behind Megan Fox? When I think “iconic” I think of a look or a type of beauty that women wish to aspire to. I would never aspire to look trashy like Fox, and she just had surgery to make her look like the real iconic beauty.

  38. BitterBetty says:

I personally think she is weird looking but whatev.

  39. Louise...In stockholm says:

Angie = husband stealing freakish skank ho man eater…

Beauty icon of the decade…… KATE BLANCHETT…classic iconic EFFORTLESS beauty

  40. For Sooth? says:

I have a problem with this because I can truthfully state that although she is beautiful it is not all natural beauty. I believe that should preclude her from being an icon so all the little wanna-be tweens, and older gals, don’t run out and get their faces sliced, diced, peeled and injected to look like her.

  41. MOOMOOMOOMOO says:

Can you imagine how awful Angelina Jolie would be if she had a ditsy/girly voice/personality? I think her voice and crappy fashion sense offsets her gorgeous face nicely. Women would hate her if she was cutesy! I appreciate her for that, it’d be so easy to cruise through life without a care for others when you’re that beautiful.

& Yeah, Jennifer Aniston? eh? and how does Megan Fox factor in to a beauty icon of the DECADE poll? It’s all bullshit, but still. Jeez.

@For Sooth? I think she’s been tweaked but the gorgeousness was always there.

  42. tr says:

I know there will always be negative nellys out there on AJ but she is truly a beauty inside and out. I’m sure JA got the two spot because people feel sorry for her for whatever reasons. I’ve never seen that oh my God breathtaking shock in JA. She’s cute sure but iconic, imo no.

  43. diva says:

I hate to be the one to break it to them, but Angelina Jolie long thick hair is courtesy of a weave. She used to look prettier when she first came out ten years ago, but not now. Jennifer Aniston is very girl next door looking hardly iconic looking, this poll is totally off. An iconic beauty would be someone like Iman whose beauty stood the test of time.

  44. SammyHammy says:

Keira Knightley? That bag of bones? She’s on the list? And Scarlett Johansen?

    Ugh.

  45. Solveig says:

This poll is ridiculous… Lot of ‘meh’ faces and personalities, none of those women is unique, nor iconic.
This decade lacks of interesting personas.

  46. waldemar says:

People, it is Cate Blanchett, with a C

And British people call a woman who manages to put on a dress two nights in a row a fashion icon (hence Cheryl Cole), trusting them to pick Iconic persons is insane.

And yeah for Joanna!!! at least they got that right : )

  47. Me says:

Angie has a freaky alien face with the body of a praying mantis.

  48. PJ says:

Hi Pickel, Maybe I’m wrong in thinking that Angelina started the trend for plumped-up lips, but I do remember reading somewhere that at one point lips like Angelina’s were one of the top requests at the dermotologist’s.

I believe in celebrating our differences; it’s disturbing that people (especially actresses) are trying so hard to look like some “ideal” beauty. They are all starting to look the same. I wish there would be more people with Barbra Streisand kind of noses, just to be different.

  49. skibunny says:

I agree this poll is a joke!

  50. Liz says:

Every poll is a joke imo

  51. Eden says:

Yes, Angelina is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!! Jennifer Aniston, are you serious??? Why is she even on the list? Now the list after Jolie is a complete JOKE!

  52. SageAdvice says:

The whole list is silly. They polled less people than attend my high school at any given time.

They are housewives. Who read InTouch and all those other rag mags, of course they are going to pick the two who pop up most in those magazines that they see all the time. Who else would they think of first?

Personally, I would definitely choose Cate Blanchett as my number one. She’s effortlessly gorgeous and statuesque. Then probably Halle Berry who has a classically beautiful face. Catherine Zeta Jones, Kate Winslet.

Jolie is known for her “exotic” beauty. But she’s just white with stuff “colored” people have (aka plump lips) so it’s considered unique.

Sorry but as a black woman, she just looks weird with big lips-they look fake even though I know they aren’t. She doesn’t seem to know how to handle them…she talks with her lips protruding-seriously watch her mouth the next time you see her talk. It’s like her lips are trying to escape from her face.

  53. Laura says:

    @Pickel

I completely, completely agree. I’m originally form Nigeria (I came to the US when I was 7) and my dad went o college in the US in the 70s and he has hated Bo Derrick since that movie she did when she had braids.

My dad said that white people used to call the style ugly, ESPECIALLY with the beads and as soon as a white, blonde, blue-eyed woman wears them…… ALL OF A SUDDEN it’s a trend.

The same thing can be said for our brown skin colour, when I see how tanned some white girls look….they look darker than me!

  54. pumak says:

    Jennifer Aniston is amazing

  55. pumak says:

    Myleene Klass????? comon!!!!
