Sarah Jessica Parker clings awkwardly to Matthew Broderick

wenn5418910

I swear, there’s only one picture out of the whole bunch where Sarah Jessica Parker isn’t draped on her husband Matthew Broderick. Which, you know, is fine I guess. But the weird thing is that Matthew looks like he wants to be anywhere but there. Is this rude? Of course it is. It’s perfectly possible that Matthew Broderick just looks like this always, that he always looks bored and over it, which, in all fairness, he probably is because he’s been famous for decades. Lainey summed it up be calling Sarah Jessica Parker “Always Grateful”:

It’s Photo Assumption, sure, but doesn’t she seem it? Like, super appreciative to be gifted with his attention? Maybe it’s just me…

Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick attended the Broadway opening of Present Laughter last night. Funny I don’t remember him at the New York premiere of Did You Hear About the Morgans. He was likely busy. With the twins. Or something.

There’s nothing wrong with a desperate wanting to please, and being desperately pleased when wanted. Just… I wonder how often he wants her. What? Look at him. That is a man who wants his wife all the time. Never mind Photo Assumption. It means nothing. Even when the photos assume it over and over, it totally means nothing.

[From Lainey Gossip]

Sigh… this makes me feel sorry for Sarah Jessica, and I know I shouldn’t. She’s got a pretty good life with her kids and her thriving Sex and the Retirement Community sequels and all of that. But I’m with Lainey, SJP and Broderick do not look like a happy couple.

In other SJP news, she was just named the new president of Halston. A lot of critics are complaining that this was a boneheaded, Lindsay Lohan-esque move for the House of Halston, but I don‘t hate it. It‘s not like Halston is Oscar de la Renta or anything – Halston makes pretty cocktail dresses, slinky gowns and generally very cute, wearable clothes. SJP might be a natural. About her appointment as president, SJP says: “I think this is a brand new kind of business model, and it illustrates how serious I am about this position. I think it’s wonderful to feel invested in something. I tend not to just endorse something. I like feeling the stakes.”

SJP also admits that she came to the company in a “rather unorthodox way” but that unorthodox isn’t really bad, so whatever. As for what she brings to the table at Halston? “Good manners, a point of view that is inspiring, that is hopefully smart, and an incredible passion and excitement and enthusiasm, as well as some experience of what I know about women, that having been pretty much the focus of my role in ‘Sex and the City.” Oh, crap. She’s going to send of fashion lines based on Carrie Bradshaw? Halston is doomed.

Halston would have been better off hiring the costume designer from SATC, that’s the real brains behind the outfits, the actresses are just mannequins.

Much ado about nothing! If her hand was a few inches lower on his chest, she’d look much less clingy. Matthew is holding Jessica pretty tight — his arm is all the way around her body — so I don’t see what the problem is. It would be different if she was clinging to him and he wasn’t clinging back. Actually they were both probably cold!

I do like that she said she wanted to bring her experience as a woman to Halston, instead of being like most celebrities and being like ‘designing has always been a passion of mine’ and acting like she is a real designer now. I doubt she’ll really do anything anyway.

sorry , maybe it’s just me but I don’t see what the problem is here. She’s posing with her man – her husband of I don’t know how many years! Is it just because she has her hand abit to high up on his chest that makes her all clingy? I mean, I’ve seen Brad and Angie pose that way too and no one’s calling Angie clingy!

They are all just posing for photos. That’s all.

  9. Kathie says:

Why the relentless need to pick on SJP? She grew up the poorest kid in the neighborhood, worked hard, achieved some success found a guy she loved and settled in to make a classic series on TV and enough sniping about SITC really? Retirement community? Remember sweeties if you live long enough you become the snip-ees of the youth driven world and you wont have the numbers we have in the Baby Boomer crowd to get your voice heard! Now we get to hear about hand placement in a series of photo’s seriously? It must be a really slow news day!

I’ll bet that despite how great her life looks in print -her life is terribly insecure and miserable.

Yeah, the poses are awkward but I wouldn’t read too much into it.I don’t think they’re lavender marriage, I think Broderick is one of those men who look very gay but aren’t. Btw, Lainey’s gossip blog is written in a clever style but she has too much hatred and is too condescending for my taste. Celebitchy rulez!

just curious…is that your real name?

b/c my 16 yr old daughter has the same name. got it from the novel ‘QOTD’ back in ’93.

    it’s very unique, i think.

ugh. how do i loathe thee, SJP? let me count the ways. i am of the opinion that SATC is one of the most repulsive, wildly sexist creations of recent memory and responsible for much of the pop-culture “omg, her clock is ticking” women’s movement backtracking and mindless “omg, i must have jimmy choo shoes” that’s happening. if what she knows about women is based on that completely unrealistic, insulting show, then she knows jack. she tends not to endorse? um, i can’t watch a TV show w/o seeing at least 2 SJP garnier commercials. and one of the assets she brings to halston is “good manners”? i can’t with her. halston is known for pretty classic stuff – i believe they’re more or less credited with the one-shoulder dress – halston is indeed doomed if they wind up with a line covered in giant flower broaches. and her route is “unorthodox” because she is “unqualified”. sorry (not really), i have a somewhat irrational hatred for SJP and all things SATC.

Weird…i agree with both Kathie AND Andrea…anyway, i think she’s just trying to give him some props since the spotlight’s on her is all. Out of the two, i’d say she’s ageing better, and looking a bit more powerful in all areas. No wonder he has to act like he’s bored, no wonder she has to act like she’s protective. I am so freaking glad i am NOT famous.

i don’t get the SATC hate…shows like nip/tuck and grey’s anatomy are far more obnoxious and portray women as totally weak and clingy, but they try to be dramatic. at least SATC was smart enough to laugh at itself. and the “biological clock” crap started in the 80s when the reagan culture tried to coax working women back home to procreate (“thirtysomething” anyone?). in any case, SJP & ferris seem fine.

Good marriage! Both have been working actors since they were very young. They have a lot in common. Give them a break, they are old and they’ve been together a long time! Robert Downey wanted to marry her when they were in their early 20′s and she left him because of his drug problems. She found stability with Matthew. Sure they may get tired of each other, who doesn’t after years and years. You don’t have to like either of them, but it really bugs me when people attack marriages which really seem to be working. Jealous much?

  28. andrea says:

i havent really seen grey’s or nip/tuck so i dont really know much about how obnoxious they are, but i believe you! the thing is, i dont think satc really did laugh at itself. at least, not enough. i will give you that the samantha character was a pretty good self-parody. samantha and charlotte were so one-dimensional (the slut/no commitment maneater and the pearl-wearing upper east side proper) that they were effective self-parodies. miranda was a less offensive character than the other 3. but i always thought carrie was beyond obnoxious. and vapid. i live in nyc and knew many young women back in the day who saw SATC and figured that was a great way to actually live your real life (sleeping around, skipping rent to buy louboutins, continue taking back immature men, worry about your “clock ticking” – at, like, 23 – etc).

i recognize though that i really, really had a visceral reaction to this show for some reason. i’m known among my friends as The One Around Whom Thou Shall Not Bring Up SJP/SATC Unless You Want To Hear A Rant. maybe i’ll bring it up with my therapist. :)

  29. snapdragon says:

andrea – i agree the characters on SATC were parodies (the men were, too), but then again the whole show was totally over the top. i have no doubt some girls went to NYC thinking it would be just like SATC but anyone who uses a tv show to dictate how they will live their life is pretty immature. i don’t remember any character skipping rent to buy shoes, though…maybe carrie. but samantha & miranda made their own money, bought their apartments themselves as well as their jimmy choos. it’s fine to not like the show, but maybe just try and see it as eye candy instead of reading anything into it. that might save on your therapy bill! :)

Please link to any comparison with Lindsay Lohan. That is totally unbelievable. I think she has a good sense of style (except when she lets her husband pick out her clothing like she did for one awards show). She had her own clothing line briefly so we’ll see how she does for Halston.

I kind of don’t care anymore what sort of marriage they have. If it’s real, great, just a beard, great.

I do find it weird for a longtime fashion company to appoint an actress as president. Consultant, maybe, or some other title, but president? I know she’s very into fashion, but come on, there are people who have worked in the industry for decades who don’t get handed that kind of job. And I agree, if SATC is what helped her, the job should go to the costumer.

whatever happened to her own clothing line? “Bitten” was it?

anyway, Halston has been a corpse for years. both the man and the line that carries his name which he lost ownership of before dying. good luck to SJP for being willing to resurrect a dead line. i’m sure that there are real designers who will be working in the background. she will just be fronting as a representative of the middle-aged demographic Halston always appealed to.

  41. twisted says:

I think SJP is very clever to take the position at Halston. She is of the age that she realizes that she is not going to have the acting opportunities going forward. Yes, SATC2 will make a ton of money but that doesn’t translate into other roles for her. She is too identified as Carrie.
She has always said she wanted to go into business, so between Halston and her own line of fragrances, she has set herself up as a shrewd businesswomen who will continue to go to work everyday like other woman and still take care of her family, all from the confines of NYC. I think she’s pretty smart.
As for Matthew, he’s just one of the most unique people in show business and its obvious that without his support at home, SJP would have never been able to achieve her success. They make a great couple, regardless of what people say about them. They have endured during good times and bad and are still together. I call that a real couple.
