Mel Gibson still has a fanbase

I know everyone hates Oksana Grigorieva, but I’ve started thinking she was sort of pretty. Yes, I know she’s had stuff done to her face, but it looks “settled” and this is the prettiest she’s looked in a while. Although the dress blows. That thing looks so cheap. Anyway, these photos are of Oksana and Mel at the Madrid premiere of The Edge of Darkness. Mel’s taken his show on the road! As he should. I’ve been surprised by the number of interviews he’s granted, and how tireless his promotion has been for his first starring role in more than seven years. And it’s paid off too! The Edge of Darkness, despite mediocre reviews, came in second in the weekend box office, only being beaten by Avatar. Gawker had a hilarious box office wrap-up yesterday called “Mel Gibson Pretty Sure The Na’vi Are Just Jews In Disguise”. So, so true.

1) Avatar — A bajillion doughlars
Snatching up thirty million more Earthbucks, this thing is just never going to stop. Not ever! In forty years when all of us are either dead or gray and forgotten, this thing will still be playing in the brain-theaters of our youths’ computerheads. No one was surprised when this movie was a hit. But aren’t you starting to get surprised that it’s THIS big? Titantic made sense, because that was about the Titantic boat and all the people that died on it and Leo DiCaprio’s face looked like a baby’s buttocks if a baby’s buttocks could look impossibly beautiful even when blue (omg!) and dead. Romance and swoony-goony stuff mixed with boat-halving special effects? Yes please! But Avatar is all about hair-f*@&ing and space trees. Did anyone know that Americans loved hair-f-cking and space trees as much as Americans apparently love hair-f&@*ing and space trees? We don’t even know ourselves. Avatar has taught us that. For that we should be grateful.

2) Edge of Relevance — $17.1 million
Oh poor Mel Gibson. Well, not that poor. This thing did well! Not many anti-Semitic wallabies with drinking problems can open a movie this big. Gibson is maybe the only one who can. Russell Crowe hasn’t said anything anti-Jew that we’re aware of, plus he’s a great big fat person these days, so nobody wants to see that. Cate Blanchett? She’s a handsome woman and oh lord does she drink and hate Jewish people, but no one wants to see her artsy movies about arts. Maybe the only Australian creature capable of being as drunken and Jew-hatingly successful as Mel Gibson is Rupert Murdoch. Actually, he probably wins. Murdoch really does win every time. But still! Mel does well! Shine on you crazy drunken Jew-hating diamond. Shine on.

[From Gawker]

So, what have we learned? That if you’re Mel Gibson, you can get wasted, drive drunk, call a female cop “Sugart-ts” and be generally unpleasant and ragingly anti-Semitic, and then you can unceremoniously dump your wife of 28 years for your young, pregnant Russian mistress, and then you can make a formulaic revenge flick with cliché dialogue and you can still succeed, relatively. Noted!

I still would not see his movie, only because of his Anti-Semitic comments.
He will be shunned by Hollywood for the rest of his life. He’s probably the most disliked Actor right now.

  2. JulieNewmar says:

Octo-mom sure gets around 😉 LOL.

  3. Rosalee says:

Charlie Sheen..he’s deplorable and his show is still highly rated..some actions are acceptable, much to my chagrin – I have one name Roman..and despite his deplorable behaviour has Johnny Depp defending him..so why not Mel Gibson? I am not defending his boorish and disgusting comments but noticing a certain standard exists.

  4. Praise St. Angie! says:

$17 mil isn’t great for an opening weekend.

    not terrible, but not great.

Even “Scooby Doo” had a better opening weekend than Mel’s latest crapfest. “How to Lose a Guy in 10 days” had a better opening, too. there are a LOT of really lame movies that opened better.

    http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/weekends/?pagenum=m2025&p=.htm

see how it does the 2nd time around…that’s a much better predictor of its future success.

  5. Linda says:

I’m not saying she’s not pretty but they look absolutely ridiculous together, they really do!!

  6. nikki says:

all i ask to an actor is good/fun/nice movies!!
why couldn’t i see his movie?
because he could be ant-semit? he works in Hollywood since more 20 years so i can’t believe he never worked with jews
because he’s a cheater? and Brad Pitt?
because when he drunk,he said idioties? welcome to the club with Kiefer Sutherland!

  7. lena says:

i’m not really shocked by this, mel is a pretty good actor and it’s a decent opening for him

  8. linda k says:

she certainly knows hope to smile at the correct camera since her first time out with mel…perhaps spain really loves mel and hasn’t heard all the stuff about him…or really doesn’t care …he’s a big star…like i said, pr blitz for beaver next…what more can he possibly say???????

  9. GetOverIT says:

What is with people. Leave him alone. He’s not the first person in the world, nor the last, that will stick their foot in their mouth while drunk. Anyone remember the movie he’d just finished when this all went down. He was volatile and highly emotional. He’s a great actor, always has been always will be. He’s apologized, what more do you want. We as an audience take these actors/people way too seriously. There just human and human’s make mistakes. It’s in our nature. It’s how we learn and grow and become better people. It’s been years, GET OVER IT.

Now for the movie. Haven’t seen it. But I’d love to see him in a comedy. A kickback to his Lethal Weapon and What Women Want days.

  10. Trish says:

Those can not possibly be his real teeth, is that bridgework or a denture?

  11. Trish says:

Mistakes? Human Nature? This man hates Jews he defended his father who is a Holocaust denier on National TV.
He’s openly defended his far right wing views, at the time that horrible movie “Passion of Christ” came out. This man should not be making any more movies, he should retire with that Russian chipmunk in Malibu and stop embarassing himself.

  12. Praise St. Angie! says:

yeah, I guess all those Jews should just “get over” the holocaust, too, huh?

people are entitled to their opinions. and it is the opinion of a lot of people that his anti-semitism (and misogyny, and drunk driving) is enough to turn them off of his movies. forever.

I may have stuck my foot in my mouth while drunk, but I never, EVER, uttered a racial, ethnic, religious, or homophobic slur. In vino veritas, and all that.

if you’re “over it” and want to see his movies, more power to you. but everyone else has the right to make their own decisions on whether or not to see his moves. personally, I don’t think that Gibson has learned, or grown, or become a better person.

  13. Jill says:

I have a friend who still loves him. How is that possible?

  14. snapdragon says:

“There just human and human’s make mistakes. It’s in our nature. It’s how we learn and grow and become better people.”

yeah, the problem with mel is that he doesn’t learn or grow. he has been making anti-semitic, homophobic and sexist remarks for years, as well as running around partying with various young girls. i don’t care if he cheats on his wife, but he presents himself as a devout catholic and yet he behaves in a very un-christian way – that makes him a hypocrite in my book.

  15. Samantha says:

I don’t like his views, but he can act. I don’t watch his movies because I like him as a person, hell I don’t like half the people I watch in real life. I watch because he can be in a movie, dominate the character he is playing and make the movie enjoyable. Babe Ruth was a disgusting womanizer alcoholic, he is still known as one the greatest baseball players of all time. That is because they like him for baseball. Same thing will happen to Tiger Woods.

  16. hatsumomo says:

Um, if everyone boycotted a movie based on the moral ethics of the actor/director/actress/production/ ect.. no one would ever go see a movie made in hollywood ever again. Ever. Face it people, some actors are just really good at hiding their flaws than others. and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if scandal came out regrading Depp, Sarsksgard, Clooney or any other ‘golden boy’ women love then instantly hate and boycott his movies. I just go for the movie. Period.

  17. lucy2 says:

She does look like Octomom, with a little bit of Jessica Alba mixed in.

  18. yissel says:

Pretty sure it’s going to be a good movie. BTW i love the color of Oksana’s dress.

  19. Lisa says:

She looks like Octomoms sister, lol…

  20. Sincerity says:

My curiosity got the best of me and I went to see “the Edge of Darkness” this weekend.

Mel Gibson really needs to become much more comfortable in working with other charismatic A-list acting personalities. Doing scenes playing off these actor’s strengths would make his performances much more interesting. Robert De Niro’s inclusion in this movie’s cast would have really enhanced this film. It was reported that he worked on this project only 1 day and quit due to creative differences. George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert Downey, Jr., Jude Law, Russell Crowe, Denzel Washington, John Travolta, Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx, Clint Eastwood, Sidney Poitier, Paul Newman, Robert Redford and a whole host of other performers have done so and produced some very memorable performances.

  21. linda k says:

if you go to melmegafans you will see a lot of pictures of them together…she looks good in the dress…her lips though have had something done to them and are not really done right….i don’t hate mel….he is a great actor and i enjoy his films….i think everyone is disappointed about the falseness of his life to his fans…which burst out last year…

  22. mike says:

Actually, 17 mil is pretty disappointing. I like Mel as an actor, though not as a person, but he has seriously underperformed here.

Sure he’s working in the shadow of Avatar, but doesn’t mean he couldn’t have made more money. The BO total’s only gonna go down from here, so I predict it’ll probably make less than 50 mil for the period where it counts for the studio (anything beyond few weeks, the studio sees very little of that money, even if the movie keeps making money– this is why studios like movies that front-end, make most of the money in the first few weeks).

In comparison, The Book of Eli, which is another R-rated movie with poor reviews that competed against Avatar, has made 75 mil in three weeks, most of that 75 mil coming in the first week. You can be sure that Mel’s movie will be nowhere close to 75 mil in three weeks.

In another comparison, the romantic crap When in Rome made 12 mil over the weekend while opening in 1000 less theaters than Mel’s crap. If you look at per theater average, When in Rome made more money than Edge of Darkness.

  23. Uzi says:

“January is a notoriously slow month at the box office, best known as a dumping ground for studio schlock and tired romantic comedies.” So said the “New York Times” a few weeks ago. Warner Brothers wisely rescheduled the original fall release of “Edge of Darkness” so it would not have to compete with stronger films. And $17 million is not a very big opening when you consider Mel’s former box office appeal. It’s been pointed out that “Taken,” which had a similar story line and starred Liam Neeson, made more money when it debuted during last year’s Super Bowl weekend. I’m sure Mel will be circling the globe to promote EoD because he’s still a strong box office draw internationally. His personal life won’t be as big a problem and Oksana won’t be hated as much overseas as she is in America because other countries have a different view of antisemitism and adultry.

Kaiser and everyone…please don’t go soft on Oksana. I agree that she looks better, but all of us would if we had access to Mel’s money and could pay for a personal trainer, stylist, plastic surgeon, designer clothes, top hair and makeup people, etc. But, as my mother used to say, “You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.” You can dress her up, but Oksana’s still a homewrecking fame whore skank.

  24. Anak says:

SHE IS THE FACE OF OCTOMOMMY

  25. Blint says:

Avatar was already released and it’s a phenomena so it doesn’t count but I don’t think 17M is great considering there was light competition this weekend. Of course the reviews were meh. His wife must be gloating.

  26. mike says:

Avatar most definitely counts. In any other week in January, Edge of Darkness could have debuted at #1 and hauled in more money. Unfortunately, Avatar is still #1 and has siphoned off young males who would have gone to see Mel’s movie.

Just compare Mel’s movie with the Book of Eli. Both are R-rated, both got bad reviews, but Eli has done far, far, far better than Mel’s movie. Eli came out when Avatar was still very much a juggernaut, yet managed to make 75 mil. Mel’s movie came out when Avatar is 7 weeks old, yet still managed only 17 mil in its opening week.

17 mil opening and #2 spot is not very impressive. Not at all.

  27. Ron says:

It’s funny how someone who was so beautiful could turn out in the end to be so ugly.

  28. Blint says:

“17 mil opening and #2 spot is not very impressive.”

Yeah that was my point. In other words even though Avatar may be a phenomena and wouldn’t easily be toppled from the #1 spot, 17M is still low for an opening weekend. Unless it was an “indie”.

Actors push movies all over the world as a matter of course. It has nothing to do with how popular of unpopular they are in that country, it’s just standard. They don’t bar them from premiers any more than Americans do.

It’s uncanny his girlfriend does bear a striking resemblance to Octomom.

  29. Uzi says:

@Mike…Regarding Avatar “siphoning off young males…” I wonder if the “young” part is relevant? I read a comment on another web site, and the writer, who saw EoD, said everyone in the audience was “over 50” (and also said several people walked out before the end). Is a younger audience that interested in Mel?

  30. justathought says:

no surprise that his new movie did well, the guy can act.

  31. Serenity says:

I agree @Uzi. It doesn’t matter how much you dress her up, a skank is a skank. I can’t stand seeing him with her, and I won’t support him as long as he is with her.

  32. curious says:

its so funny,,,she tags along with him wherever he goes having a screaming 3 month old baby at home,,,,
too scared some other “bootycall” snaps him and gets pregnant too:))))
she’ll have to be on the watch till the end of time:))))

  34. linda k says:

hmmmmmm………just read that mel will be on a spanish show in madrid in february….what’s up with that? wonder why the all the attention in madrid…??? it’s going to be in a couple of weeks so it doesn’t seem connected with the opening of the movie…..oks seemed more at ease with the photogs this time around, knowing how to pose, etc…..saw a picture of robyn just recently, doesn’t look too good…wonder what’s going on with the divorce, and to see mel with oks all over the place….wonder how she feels…arm candy for sure

  35. Trish says:

Just remember that February is an official month for Hollywood releasing it’s worst films of the year.

  36. Uzi says:

@ linda k…Now that so much about John Edwards is coming out it’s interesting to compare him with Mel. As disgusting as Edwards is, you don’t see him out in public with Rielle Hunter. I think flaunting Oksana while he’s still legally married is Mel’s way of sticking it to Robyn. There was an interesting article in the National Enquirer last year that said that Robyn had initially agreed to a “quickie” divorce which would end the marriage then divide the assets later. She changed her mind, and hired (or her lawyers did) a private investigator to check into Oksana’s “sketchy” past. I believe this story, and also believe the PI dug up a lot of dirt on Oksana which Robyn’s holding over Mel’s head. He can’t challenge any of this publicly or legally, so is showing his contempt for Robyn with his “in your face” display of arm candy. If Mel had any decency or common sense he’d be like Edwards and keep the relationship with his mistress behind closed doors until the divorce was finalized.

  37. Blint says:

@Uzi. Yes I think age may be a big factor here. Especially with Twilight stealing virtually everyone’s thunder, but the torch has long been passed. A lot of younger actors who take risks that demand a lot of skill like Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp, Christian Bale (well before his rant at the DP anyway) have really taken the front seat in the last 5 or 6 years (does anyone really doubt the shear virtuosity and range of these guys?). I think Sean Penn would still be on the list had the public not gotten sick of him personally. You have to think Robin like Robyn might have been afflicted with the same “married to a lousy husband” inertia syndrome.

  38. linda k says:

uzi…you know when he brought oks out…i couldn’t believe it…no matter the state of their marriage..to walk out 3 weeks after a divorce was filed, stinks…the more interviews i see of him, i actually can’t understand where he is coming from, he twitches, he’s arrogant sometimes, makes no sense, he’s either a genius, or needs some help….to flaunt his affair, really got to a lot of people. people keep bringing up 4 years ago with his drinking, but not one has brought up his flaunting of his affairs…actually applauding him on leno when he announced the impending birth…no reporter asked him about his relationship to oks, how it affected his family, or anything else related to the past year, like nothing happened…as no dna report came out, is the baby his??? i am surprised national enquirer hasn’t done anything about it…in fact they haven’t mentioned anything about oks and mel in a while…if you look on x17.com you can see pictures of robin,,,she looks old and beat..

  39. CathyT says:

Uzi…besides the out of wedlock baby daughters, there is no comparing Mel Gibson/Oksana Grigorieva with John Edwards/Rielle Hunter.

The Gibsons were estranged although still living together. When Mel started seeing Oksana, Robyn knew about it and their children knew about it. Mel even took Oksana and her son on a family vacation. When Oksana became pregnant, Mel acknowledged his paternity early in the pregnancy.

John Edwards otoh first denied his relationship with Rielle to his wife and the press, then eventually acknowledged the relationship while still denying paternity. His staffer was even coerced into claiming to be the father of Quinn! Edwards told him to fake a DNA test. When Edwards finally acknowledged his daughter, she was already 2 years old. Now given his past behavior, why do you think that he would want to be seen in public with Ms. Hunter, let alone Quinn?

I don’t believe the N.E. story about Robyn wanting a quickie divorce. TMZ reported shortly after the divorce papers were filed that the division of assets was going to be complicated because a lot of their holdings were in real estate. TMZ is a lot more reliable than the Enquirer. Also, in a no-fault state like CA, it doesn’t matter how sketchy the mistress is. Mel isn’t showing contempt for Robyn. What is clear now is that the Gibson family’s extreme privacy was more Robyn’s idea than Mel’s. Mel doesn’t mind his “woman” leaving the hearth and home for showbiz events. About the timing, Mel wouldn’t consider the finalization of the divorce to mean much anyway. From a Catholic pov he will still be married after the divorce. (No, I don’t buy that silly annulment story either. If he eventually gets an annulment it won’t be from his father.)

  40. Serenity says:

@Uzi, you mean it could be worse than what we already know about Oks? If this is true, how sad for him to be doing this to the mother of his seven children.

  41. Debbie says:

Uzi, Wow I believe that to, I wonder? Just how much dirt there is on her. I know that it was published somewhere about marrying her first husband only to get UK citizen ship, and I believe from memory He dealt or had dealings with drugs.
Something along those lines any way.
I truly hope Mel wouldn’t sink that low to devastate Robyn even more. His mind and all reasoning must be well and truly gone.
As said previously saw pic’s of Robyn with one of her Sons after the baby arrived, she looked totally devastated, and also on the opposite page showed some interesting pic’s of Mel after the birth. He seemed truly lost and to me his body language and how ill he looked did not strike me of those of a thrilled Father.

As for is Fan base Damaged Goods.
And this out burst of calling a interviewer an Ass hole saying he thinks he is still the same person, speaks volumes to me, as well as being in a stressful so called relationship with The Whore is only adding to his mental and other issues he is battling with
    Debbie

  42. Uzi says:

@Serenity…If you read all the stuff that’s been written about Oksana on line and in print that wasn’t generated by Mel’s PR people you’ll see that there are a lot of “gaps” in her “resume.” Connect the dots and you get a picture of a high class hooker. Mind you, I haven’t seen any real proof of this, but my sixth sense tells me that rich, usually older men didn’t take care of her all these years because they were awed by her piano playing! This would explain why Mel’s PR people are hell-bent in trying to convince the public that Oksana is an internationally acclaimed model/singer/musician…to “clean up” her image.

  43. linda k says:

just saw mel on a couple of shows where he gets angry at the interviewer about his past and they were commenting on mad mel and what is up with that….they were commenting that it is mel who is angry and has not let go of his past….at the end of one interview after he thanks the interviewer, he says a””hole….of course the pr people said he was talking to his publicist who was there, but it didn’t seem that way…what is up with this guy….he’s arrogant…he gets caught in boston with oks…says he’s not going to get a divorce, , then has those pictures taken in december at the beach, talk about flaunting…and sticking it to robyn…then the pregnancy…what kind of a person is this?? now he’s flying around the world with her….youre right uzi, in the beginning i read she wanted a quickie divorce, so wonder what’s up…

  44. linda k says:

i wonder how long it will be before he needs a rock like robyn to keep him from flying off the world…

  45. Uzi says:

@Cathy T…I strongly disagree with you about there being no comparison with John/Rielle and Mel/Oksana. Rielle and Oksana were/are both women with agendas. They have questionable pasts, and they got involved with married men and “accidentally” became pregnant. Yes, the Gibsons had an “arrangement,” and everyone accepted Oksana as Mel’s mistress. But if they’d wanted to divorce they would have done so before Oksana got knocked up. Remember that Mel’s PR people denied any romantic relationship between Mel and Oksana before then.

From what I’ve read about John/Rielle, he actually reacted the way a “caught” man would…angry when she told him she was pregnant, wanting her to get an abortion and when she refused concocting an elaborate cover-up and denying paternity. While I believe Mel handled the situation better by immediately taking responsibility for his actions, I think he went a little overboard by going on the Jay Leno Show and joking about being Octomel; a simple press release confirming the pregnancy would have been more appropriate. And like Linda K said, it showed extremely poor taste to bring Oksana to a movie premiere three weeks after Robyn filed for divorce.

I think that at this point we shouldn’t even use “Mel” and “Catholic” in the same sentence. It’s an insult to real Catholics who take their faith seriously. Also Cathy, I know you don’t believe anything that’s in the NE, and I respect that. I don’t believe anything said by Mel’s PR people, and I also don’t believe half of what’s written in People Magazine which some in Hollywood call “Kneepads Magazine” because of the editors’ close relationships with publicists. But you seem like a smart woman, so wouldn’t you agree with me that there’s a lot more to the Mel/Robyn/Oksana story than what’s been reported in the mainstream media?

  46. Debbie says:

Uzi, remember Mel has NOT been operating with a clear mind with all this going on.
Even when he joked about OctoMel On the Leno Show, His Body language to me any way gave it away.
He covered it up with trying to be stupid.

You can bet anything at all there is a lot we will never know about The whore, which has been covered up,Even from Mel and his Pr team.

Sketchy past is a down right under statement.
