George Clooney was in on the joke while looking surly at the Oscars

82nd Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals
Heartthrob George Clooney just wasn’t looking like himself at the Oscars on Sunday. He sounded slurry during the red carpet interviews, like he’d been drinking, and his eyes looked droopy and tired to me. His hair was long and although it was styled it wasn’t a good look for him. Popeater reported that Clooney was growing his hair out at the insistence of his girlfriend, Elisabetta Canalis, who looked just as unamused as he did most of the time. When Sherri Shepherd was interviewing Clooney on the red carpet and harmlessly flirting with him, Canalis glowered openly. I swear she actually sneered. At least when Clooney brought Sarah Larson with him to the Oscars they were both happy and smiling. I don’t see these two lasting much longer. Canalis allegedly thinks that the long hair makes Clooney look “more European and less American.” It just makes him look like a tool, and hopefully he’ll realize that soon and try to recapture his old look, and his old single life.

A lot of tongues were wagging when Clooney looked visibly annoyed and slightly bored during the Oscar ceremony. The hosts made some jokes at his expense, deliberately forgetting him when announcing the nominees, and the camera cut to show Clooney looking convincingly pissed off. That wasn’t the case, according to various reports that claim that the actor was in on the joke. I’m not so sure, though. He just seemed “off” all night, like he didn’t want to be there:

By George! Mr. Clooney shocked many an Oscar viewer Sunday night when he was seemingly unamused by hosts Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin’s repeated digs at him. But a source close to the “Up in the Air” actor tells us that he was playing along, too.

“It was something George and Alec agreed upon,” says the insider, adding that when the cameras weren’t on Clooney, he and the “30 Rock” actor were making faces at each other. “It was a ‘follow-my-lead’ sort of thing.”

[From the NY Daily News]

MSNBC’s The Scoop has more on Clooney at the Oscars, and they bring up a good point – he was signing autographs and looked perfectly happy talking to fans on the red carpet. I remember seeing that on camera. A source notes “Before the show he was basically the only actor to go to the area where fans are corralled.” As far as his mood during the ceremony, his rep says that he “was fine, just under the weather … happens” and that Clooney knew ahead of time that he would be mocked by Baldwin and Martin. I’m thinking “under the weather” is code for copious amounts of liquor. I remember someone commenting that they saw Clooney drinking from a flask on the red carpet. I googled it, and here’s a link to a video, where he shows an interviewer his flask.

Love him! I loved his hair, and I thought it was so fantastic that he was talking to fans and signing autographs! He is the BEST!!!!

  2. Melanie says:

It is ok. I still love ya George. I wouldn’t kick you out of bed for being drunk, in fact I would probably have to get you drunk……

  3. Tess says:

Coooool. That whole bit was just soooo funnnny.

No wonder celebs get paid so much. You just gotta hand it to them. Their humor is razor-sharp, fresh, bold and sooooo sassy.

  4. Ursula says:

Always loved his sense of humor. That hair style split my insides.

  5. Marjalane says:

I’ll tell you what’s sad-no wait- what’s hideous, is that George Clooney was so old man-ish, and surly at the Oscars that he totally reminded me of my father. Does the ick factor get higher than that? I love my dad, but his hot days are way in the past. Just like Clooney’s. *sigh*

  6. Icecat says:

I don’t *get* what the big deal is. Sheesh, let him be…

  7. Akasha says:

I love him. But his long hair makes him looker older.
It looks like he’s losing his joie de vivre with this stupid woman! He needs his flask to get through another evening with her clinging to his arm….my poor George! It’s all in the hair, cut it and cut her off !!! PLEASE !!!

  8. PrettyTarheelFan says:

OMG, he looks like my uncle rick with this hair. Don’t get me wrong, I love my uncle, but that’s just wrong. Ewwww, I can never be attracted to Clooney again.

  9. Stephie says:

Is he that good of an actor? Still think he was peeved at the ribbing. And I don’t care how he wears his hair. Just glad he has some 😉

  10. Granger says:

Seriously, what was with Elisabetta on the red carpet? I thought she was a big celeb in Italy, so she shouldn’t have been out of her element there, but she looked really deer-caught-in-the-headlights-ish, and even a little disinterested with all the attention George was getting. I can’t remember if it was a Canadian channel, but at one point an interviewer asked Elisabetta a question, I think about George’s hair, and her answer was so bland and quiet that my immediate thought was that she didn’t understand him. And then, when the interviewer commented that she didn’t have much to say about it, George said, in a rather sarcastic tone, “That’s because she doesn’t speak English and doesn’t understand you.” It was kind of shocking! I mean, I’m sure it was a joke, but it was a little snide at the same time. My husband actually yelled from the kitchen, “Did he just put his girlfriend down, or what???”

  11. YOU PEOPLE R STUPID says:

WHAT SPIN!!!! GEORGE WAS DRUNK AS SHIT, AND MAD HE DIDN’T WIN..WE WERE THERE, 3 SEATS AWAY!!! HE WAS BITCHIN ALL NIGHT TO EVERYONE!!! STOP LYING!!!!

  12. Gemma says:

    @ You people r stupid.

I am more inclined to believe these reports rather than the “he was pissed he didn’t win”. Come on, he lost throughout the award season to Jeff Bridges, I think he didn’t except to fare better at the oscars.
As for the long flat hair, it does nothing for him, he should cut it off and grow that silver beard back. So much sexier. Still love him and his sense of humour!

  13. Lady Jane says:

Here is the link for the interview with Sherri Shepherd. I actually thought Elisabetta looked lovely. OK, so she isn’t clenching her teeth in a rictus grin every second. But she looks pleasant enough. I think that is just her face.

  14. meme says:

dump that elisabetta bitch george. she’s ruining you.

  15. Guest says:

I saw a red carpet interview where he mentioned the hair is for a movie he is filming and he actually deadpanned that it makes for a great red carpet look – I got the sense he isn’t crazy about it either from that, but that’s part of the job.

Still found he looked pissed the whole night – even Sandra Bullock commented on his “sad eyes” and tiredness in the press room when telling why she wouldn’t out the story about him throwing her in the pool.

  16. Dorothy says:

@ prettytarheel – can you introduce me to your uncle Rick! lol

  17. bite me says:

douchebag… Glad Jeff Bridges won all the awards, since he can actually act…and he was drunk

  18. Linda says:

I loved Sherri’s interview with George Clooney…she was great with him! Although, he did seem to get a little peeved after that! He seemed like a spoiled brat and that he’d rather be anywhere then at the Oscars!! Please remember that in the future academy so you don’t nominate him again!! Hate his longer hair…it looks stupid. Everyone always comments on women dressing their age – someone should point out men acting/appearing/dressing their age as well….

  19. hmm says:

It was obvious that he was in on the joke but other than that he did seem a bit surly and unlike himself. And this new girlfriend is definitely a downgrade as he seems to have lost a little bit of the aura that has surrounded him for so long.

  20. Jag says:

If she wants a European man, she should date one. Let Clooney be himself; trying to change him will get her dumped. I think they’ll be breaking up now that the Oscars are done.

  21. Charity is Chic says:

He’s just setting the stage for dumping the red carpet girlfriend. He’ll start spreading the rumor that she made him unhappy. She was just there for show anyway. Now that the aware are all done, he has no reason to keep her around. Mark my words. She won’t be around at the end of the year.

  22. PrettyTarheelFan says:

LoL @ Dorothy: if he hadn’t been married to my Aunt Sheri for over 30 years, sure.

  23. Tess says:

    @Meme, hmmmm, Jag

    Why blame her?

    His choices, his responsibility.

    A women shouldn’t blamed for a man’s shortcomings.

  24. Lady Jane says:

One more thing, her wrap was a mess. It was obvious she wanted to cover her trashy looking tattoos for the red carpet, the wrap flopping all over the place just looked fussy and messy.

  25. michellllle says:

Thought he was his charming, gorgeous self. Loved that he interacted w/ the fans & sure he was buzzed, what’s the big deal? He wasn’t falling over himself or hidding some elicit behavior. Hell he even presented the flask. He’s always been a practical joker & if he was disappointed to have lost he was not only in good company but hid it well. Thanks Lady Jane for the link. EC hardly sneered, in fact she smiled & laughed. As for her expressions I think that’s just her face. I think she’s very attractive but I understand the criticism. Afterall, who is really good enough for George?

  26. PJ says:

On the video Clooney says “I’m ready to go in there and lose to Jeff Bridges” and displays the flask. In other words, he was drowning his sorrows in booze.

So he didn’t want to be there, and he made that pretty clear! I can understand why some people wouldn’t want to participate in all this Oscar stuff when they know they’re not going to win.

The Oscars are always trying to create this fantasy of colleagiality and how everyone is a good loser. Look at how the cameras always pan to the faces of the losers when the winner is announced — and all the losers know it, so they’re smiling and applauding.

You’ve got to hand it to Meryl Streep, who has been losing graciously year after year, even when her performances blew away the winner’s. She was absolutely robbed for “Doubt.” Did anybody notice that Sandra Bullock tried to kiss Meryl after she was announced as the winner, and Meryl kind of blew her off, waved her arm and told Bullock to go onstage.

  27. Kitten says:

I think they were both drunk . He may have found a soulmate ( another drunk ) . These articles trying to cover for him . He was not charming or cute . His attitude was like a ungrateful ass . He makes tons of money and lives in a huge home because he makes movies and goes to those stupid events . The least he could do is keep it together for the Oscars . That woman he was with was perfect for him ! She speaks english fine she used to live in LA ! There are so many people who would be grateful to be in his shoes . He is like a spoiled bratt ! He will get sick of his drinking buddy ( the italian ) and pick another out of the brothel . If he was broke and worked at a 7 11 would you date him ? Not me ! He has turned into a pathetic drunk .

  28. gonzo says:

    his girlfriend is really manly.

  29. snowball says:

So rather than being just tired, not feeling well and not in an “on” mood, he was drunk and surly.

@kitten – “He has turned into a pathetic drunk.” Good lord, what is your basis for that? Or that EC is another drunk and his drinking buddy? /headdesk

Because EC’s wrap was offensive to some people, it must mean she’s ashamed of her tattoos.

Because George’s hair looked like crap, it’s because EC’s sucking the life out of him.

Since it’s after the Oscars and he’s never not had a “date,” he’s kept EC just so he would have someone to walk with. Because surely, he couldn’t get another date, even another celeb.

Because he was trying to get away from a nosy pap, he told the person that EC didn’t speak English. Which of course she does. So why was it an insult instead of just a way to get past the nosy douchebags on the red carpet?

Because he said, “I’m ready to go in there and lose to Jeff Bridges,” he was, of course, drunk and sorrowful. Even though he really wasn’t expected to win by anyone.

I think people read way, way too much into things sometimes.

  30. Lady Jane says:

Well, isn’t that why we are here on this site? We are all a bit celebrity obsessed (for good or for ill) and reading way to much into things is. what. we. do.

    It’s fun.

  31. Lorenzo says:

His girl friend is hot, You women need to take a chill pill. George is doing just fine, and I bet she look great with clothes..

  32. skibunny says:

    Hot?….if you’re a horse!

  33. Jorja says:

I imagine it would be difficult for a nominated a-list celebrity to forego the Oscars even if they “know” they won’t win… This Oscar season was pretty much a lock for bridges, monique, waltz and sandy b. But part of the show is watching the “losers” lose, as revolting as that is… they sit in the front row for a reason. I guess if you like the accolades and the statuette when you win, you should be a good sport and show up when someone else does, but that doesn’t mean you have to like it.

  34. Poor Jen says:

So George says the hairstyle is for a film but some of you prefer to think that Elisabetta is trying to turn him European.

  35. lolo says:

Clooney needs to get his act together and dump this stupid bitch of a Canalis.

  36. Scout says:

Maybe it is true that his girl was annoyed with any flirting that some of you say went on in the intervieq, then she said something to him and they had an argument. I briefly saw the couple as I flipped channels and watched them for like 1 minute and my immediate response was, wow, those two look peeved at something and angry at each other. That said, I still think he is gorgeous to look at – although not his best that night. I think she looks, well, I guess pretty, but weirdly like a man or one in drag. Just something about her face. IMHO of course!

  37. Hmm I actually like the hair. And I have nothing bad to say about the girlfriend. With that said, I think he’ll find another brunette before next year’s Oscars.

  38. Camille says:

Yeah right George. When I saw him being interviewed on the red carpet he came off as snotty and snarky and I got the distinct impression that he wasn’t happy that he wasn’t going to win. Something defintely seemed *off* between him and his ‘girlfriend’ as well.

I was incredibly happy for Jeff B that he won and that George didn’t even have a chance this year lol.
I think George is completely and totally over-rated as an actor (I’ve only enjoyed him in 2 of his films) and as a ‘heart throb’ (those paper-cut lips of his are so ugly to me). Also his longer hair looks ridiculous. I prefer to see him with a groomed beard as it hides his fug mouth/huge chin.

  39. Lisa says:

Oh man, Canalis has it bad, doesn’t she? Every pic of them together she’s staring at Clooney with that googly-eyed “you’re mine” look. Of course, Clooney himself is looking everywhere except at Canalis. Hopefully he’ll kick her to the curb soon. I’m ready to see who the next tall brunette will be.

  40. rachel says:

Both George and Elisabetta were rude during this evening! Maybe he was on the joke at the beginning with Alec and Steve but it doesn’t explain his bad behavior for the rest of the ceremony. He has no excuse. He didn’t act like a professional.

  41. amar says:

did you all not see his E! interview he was playful and joking
and even said he would bet all his property on Bridges

  42. Fleur says:

thank you, I’m fine . sorry to hear that you miss me . just came back to apologize for my nasty comments and maybe take back that stinking toilet ….
please do not expect me to answer your question .
    peace !

  43. ezra gittman says:

These two are so on the outs. He looks absolutely miserable and she entirely pissed-off and bored.
This relationship is going to end real soon if it already hasn’t. I do think he looks great however. I think the longer hair suits him.

  44. wonda says:

maybe george likes to be treated like that by the bitches that pick him and his wallet too does he know of any other way? — is that why he is always with a drink in “his hand” so that they can easily ‘rob’ him? What exactly did they put in that drink? Is he such an easy ‘mark’ for those no clothes hookers “emperor’s clothes” has anyone really seen them?

  45. Mia says:

George needs to get over himself. I feel bad for any woman who gets involved with him he is going to end up a very old playboy with a young girl who is only with him for his money. If he gets married now at least he will end up with someone who really loves him but that won’t be the case as he gets older. He lives in Italy and still doesn’t learn the language. Elizabetta is gorge and should find herself someone that is sincere and deserves to be with her. Someone who speaks Italian and English. And really respects her and the Italian culture not like full of himself OLD MAN GEORGE.
