Robert Pattinson’s ‘Remember Me’ has forgettable box office take

Robert Pattinson has been hitting the press tour hard for his new romantic drama, Remember Me, but the film still underperformed at the box office, taking in a relatively paltry estimated $8.3$9.6 million in it’s opening weekend and placing fourth overall. This seems to show that Pattinson’s tousled hair and self deprecating charm don’t translate to ticket sales for non-Vampire films. The Twihards didn’t come out for Rob when he wasn’t playing an immortal controlling boyfriend.

Alice in Wonderland dominated over the weekend in its second week, taking in $62 million, while Matt Damon’s Green Zone was second with a disappointing $14.5 million. (It cost $100 million to make!) Romantic comedy She’s Out of My League even bested Remember Me, by some estimates, earning $9.6 million, and it stars people I’ve barely heard of.

Although girls across the world swoon over Twilight vampire Robert Pattinson, it doesn’t appear as if they are going to see his new flick Remember Me with not-so impressive box office numbers this weekend.

Taking in $8.3 million from Friday to Saturday according to Reuters, the romantic story stands at fourth place below She’s Out of My League and Matt Damon’s the Green Zone with $14.5 million.

On its opening day alone, the Twilight Saga: New Moon took in $26.3 million, making Robert’s next movie debut much anticipated.

Remember Me stars fan favorite Robert and on-screen love interest Emile de Ravin.

I’m not going to include any spoilers here, but the film could have also suffered from advance negative publicity due to its ending. There’s a lot of buzz about it online, and if I was at all inclined to see it I decided against going after learning how it ends. I have a lot of disdain for film studio Summit Entertainment, which had a massive hit with the Twilight saga but has been nothing but arrogant in the way it has handled minor setbacks. In that respect I don’t care that Remember Me tanked, but I’m a minor fan of Pattinson and this will have a big impact on his career. I’m hoping he gets a better starring vehicle that will help him achieve success outside Twilight. It’s also too bad that Green Zone didn’t do as well as expected. Alice is really trouncing everyone at the box office, and it doesn’t help that the film is receiving lousy reviews. I’ll probably still go see while I can, though. Any excuse to stare at Matt Damon for two hours is good enough for me.

    “alice” is beautiful but empty
“green zone” is “why the war in Irak for idiots!”

  2. Snarf says:

Not sure if Pattinson is inked to star in the next Twilight movie (Breaking Dawn) with Summit yet, but this should help keep his asking price down, non?

  3. Robfan says:

Remember Me was released in fewer theaters then She’s out of my league. So for the amout of theaters it was released, it did better than She’s out of my league!

The movie was great with a sad ending.

  4. mslewis says:

That Pattinson movie didn’t really cost that much so it should eventually earn a small profit. However, the studio is probably really, really disappointed at the BO. They probably expected an opening weekend of at leat $30M on his name alone. Just goes to show that those twihard girls are only interested in vampires. Also, the movie got a D on move rating sites.

I don’t think “Alice” is at fault for these bombs. It’s just that the movies being released now are crap. When “Avatar” was earning billions, there were still some movies that made a lot of money (“Sherlock Holmes”).

  5. Mairead says:

Hmm – based on just Pattinson alone, I probably wouldn’t bother to see it. However it does have Chris Cooper, who does tortured-moody-stoicism like nobody else, Lena Olin and Pierce Brosnan. Even Martha Plimpton apparently turns up in a scene. For those guys alone I’d watch it.

Your assessment of Alice is spot on nikki. i really did enjoy some of the performances though

  6. lhenry says:

I am a die hard fan of Rob and was very disappointed that Remember Me came in 4th! It was a great movie with a very surprising ending (bring the tissues). Rob is a great actor and he shows it through this movie. Hopeful after this Alice hype ppl will finally give Rmemeber Me a chance.
    Two thumbs up!

  7. cedar falls says:

As Miley Cyrus once said, “[the screaming girls] aren’t in love with Robert, they’re in love with Edward”.

    Smarter than she looks, clearly.

  8. Tia C says:

@ cedar falls: LOL! Yes, maybe she is.

I’m SO not surprised by the lackluster box office on this one. It looked super boring to me in the previews, and not everyone likes an ending requiring tissues.

  9. Dana says:

I saw the movie and really enjoyed it. I think Rob deserves a lot of credit for choosing a script that is really bold and not the usual mind numbing Hollywood fare. The less than spectacular box office results could probably be attributed to the ending being leaked all over the internet before the movie opened, not to mention, in my opinion, some really harsh critisism from some of the movie critics that I think was totally unjustified.

  10. Taylor Blue says:

I know that it made me not go hearing about the ending and how everyone was crying. I think that if it wasn’t for that leak it might have done better. But that doesn’t mean I’m not going to see it all ever I’ll just make sure I bring a lot of kleenex’s. I think that it’s Robert’s break out role to show that he can do something else other than vampire movies. He’s so much better than that.

  11. Cheyenne says:

Good lord, the guy can’t act his way out of a paper bag. But I have to admit he is drop-dead gorgeous.

  12. bellaluna says:

I think the only reason the movie didn’t do as well as they’d hope is because it was Robert with someone other than Kristin. Has more to do with fans knowing who they want to see on-screen together than anything else. Also, the reviews weren’t great, and the “major event” in the movie was depressing enough.

  13. fiona says:

It is not Pattinson faute! The movie is awful…Nobody can turn a bad movie in a success, just because you are an adorable actor. You danse according to the tune.

  14. GatsbyGal says:

I think they made this movie simply based on the ending, hoping that the shock factor of it would make people talk about the movie and get lots of people to come see it. But I think that’s backfired, because it’s obvious that they’ve used a very recent national tragedy to bolster ticket sales, and that flat-out disgusts me.

  15. lin234 says:

I don’t think Rob is that hot without his Twilight makeup. As for the ending, I think it’s still too soon for a movie to use a national tragedy for it’s own purposes. The war is still going on, the despicable culprit was never caught, it is still fresh to many Americans.

I know I wouldn’t support any movie that uses something like that to garner sympathy. It’s too tacky.

Opps, just read GatsbyGal’s comment. Looks like we have the same idea here! 🙂 I draw the line at using something like that as entertainment.

  16. Cindy says:

The biggest flop at the box office was Matt Damons Green Zone which only made $15mil but cost $100mil to make. Remember Me did so-so it cost 16mil to make but has already made back 50% of it’s budget in the US alone. I feel that the success or failure of movies these days has nothing do with the whose starring in them it all comes down to the storyline, you could have had Johnny Dep in the lead in Remember Me and it still would not have not made much at the box office.

  17. CC says:

It’s one movie, he’ll live. Everyone has to have at least one bomb. If not he can always turn to music, and it’s not like he needs money anyways, based on the bigillions Twilight has made him.

  18. Beth says:

I think it didn’t do well because nobody knows what it’s about. I know it’s a sad movie about a relationship. The commercials don’t really say anything.

  19. mary simon says:

Rob will recover from this movie. I think a major weak link was the girlfriend – no one knows who she is – she is not that attractive and there didn’t appear to be any chemistry between them. Just sayin ..

  20. GrrrrrlGrace says:

He’ll be fine, everyone has luke-warm flops. BTW didn’t like the female lead at ALL.

  21. Dawn says:

immortal controlling boyfriend. I love that.

  22. lana says:

I agree with Cindy – Matt Damon was the biggest flop at the box office this weekend. He has proven to be the most overrated actor out there today (anyone can – and did – buy award noms this season – see Clooney, George). While Damon used to command $20M a picture, he now must grovel for only $7M. No one wants to see him in anything but Bourne and as this collaboration proves – not even that anymore!

  23. Emily says:

@mary simon, Emilie de Ravin was in Lost for the first few seasons. I’m fairly certain that that show had a few people watching it.

  24. biskachoo says:

I still have some faith in Summit when i found out they were involved with the hurt locker.

  25. Aitch says:

    I don’t think it really “tanked” though……

  26. justmyopinion says:

I have to agree with the blogger about the make up in the Movie Twilight. He just does not look the same without that vampire makeup. That is what made him sexy along with the lighting. But he does not look like the same person without it.

  27. justmyopinion says:

My advice to him, please stay clean shaven and brows plucked along with the hair combed back. He needs to look more like Edward for sure, otherwise he looks just like any other guy. Brad Pitt found that out, we like our men clean shaven and neat. This is the American way.

  28. Ann says:

    I am soo happy!!!

Twiharrds suck! Robby greasy sparkle patty sucks!!!! apple-lights suck!!!

    😀

  29. Meg says:

Considering it was released in just over 2,000 theaters and the total cost to make it was $16 million versus a big production, Remember me wasn’t a flop. It also didn’t help having the script and ending leaked. Rob has a lot of good roles coming up for people who are a fan of him, not just his character Edward.

  30. Reggie Veses says:

In my opinion, Remember me flopped simply because of 3 things. The previes and trailers are sooo damn boring. I mean so what if Robert’s in it? Secondly, maybe his fans are only in love with him because he plays Edward Cullen. And last but certainly not the least, Robert Pattinson is not really that famous. Maybe its the
Edward thing that fans really love.

  31. Emma says:

Embarrassment that what it movie is. He should not promote it, yet alone produce it. The poster of the film is awful. All about him. The leading actress shown from an angle only, unrecognizable. Clearly aimed on selling his charm to estrogen imbalanced women. WHY NOT UNDRESS HIM FULLY OND PUT ON THE FRONT? Americans will never forgive him (Is he producing the flick too?) the use of their national tragedy for such nuisance movie. That is pure exploitation. You do not know what 911 means to them? You are a high school level stage actor and you cannot kiss.
