Robert Pattinson: ‘When I hear someone who’s eloquent, it makes me really angry’

Robert Pattinson and Zendaya cover the latest issue of Interview Mag. They’re mostly promoting The Drama, but they also worked together on the third Dune movie and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. The thing to remember about Pattinson is that when he gets into film-promotion mode, he just starts lying and saying crazy stuff to amuse himself. The thing to remember about Zendaya is that she’s very driven, professional and a little bit boring in interviews. Basically, Pattinson’s quotes in this piece are funny, neurotic and weird, while Zendaya is basically like “what are you even talking about, Rob?” Some quotes from Rob:

Rob on his “mysterious” vibe: “I wish I could stay in the mysterious. I’ve learned again and again that if you just don’t speak, people are like, “Wow. You’re really intimidating,” but I just can’t fucking maintain it.

Rob is not intense: “People used to be like, “Oh my god, he’s so intense,” but you’re not really allowed to do that in a professional context anymore. So the only thing you ever find out about people is like, “They seem nice and really they’re just a d-ck.”

Rob’s transactional relationships: “In general, I have pretty transactional relationships. [Laughs] I’ll only really talk to someone if I want something from them… Sometimes I don’t really mind how it’s interpreted. Also, I’m never fully joking.

Rob on the difficulty he has explaining himself & his art: “I was listening to a podcast yesterday with a director, and when I hear someone who’s eloquent, it makes me really angry. I felt inspired by thinking that eloquence is a kind of classist act. I was like, there’s something honest about not being able to express yourself. It’s proletarian to not be able to say anything. Next question.

Rob on the Twilight movies: “When I was doing Twilight, there was such a cultural pushback against it, almost simultaneous to its success, so I kind of had to ride both things. I really enjoyed making the movies, but then there was such a huge marketing push behind it as well. I didn’t want to get my personal identity caught up in that, so I tried to push forward my individuality a little, and that kind of stuck with me. It was also interesting getting famous off of playing a part—people thought I was that character in the beginning.

Rob on therapy: “I went to therapy once and the therapist asked me if I was on drugs because they couldn’t understand what I was talking about. I was like, “I’m trying my best.”

Rob on Zendaya’s energy: “What I noticed on The Drama was that you come in on your day off and watch the monitor and talk to all the different department heads. It’s very impressive. I literally can’t even function. I can only do tiny little bursts of energy. I had to go and lay down on my fainting couch.

[From Interview]

This is cracking me up more than anything: “I felt inspired by thinking that eloquence is a kind of classist act. I was like, there’s something honest about not being able to express yourself. It’s proletarian to not be able to say anything.” That tickled me – the idea of Robert Pattinson expressing a proletariat disdain towards being well-spoken and thoughtful in speech. The fundamental drama between Rob and Zendaya is that she’s a very grounded, matter-of-fact Virgo who works hard, says what she means and does what she promises. Rob is like “I’m one with the working class because I can’t talk about my art and also I want to move into furniture design and music and microwave pasta.”

They definitely need a second movie together based on this editorial; short form or long, I don’t care what the plot is, just make it happen!

I thought that was Brittany Murphy for a second

This amuses me. Is he aware of the many many proletarian working class activists who made a name for themselves by their eloquence? Whatever, lol.

I’ll always have a soft spot for ol’ RPattz. Overall I think he’s just a charming, good-hearted doofus.

  7. Denise says:

Virgo and Taurus usually work really well together

I have had a soft spot for him since a coworker was obsessed with Twilight back in the day. His schtick can be funny, but we are in an international crisis of stupidity being lead by the richest, evil-est and dumbest white men. As a woman who has had magat white men snarl at me for being educated, well-spoken and “thinking I am smart,” his comment hits different than it would have been before tangerine tits and his politics of the lowest common denominator catering to the stupidest in the room because racists lost their minds over the Obamas. It is time to work on different schtick.
