Michael B. Jordan is reportedly ‘repulsed’ by the BAFTA n-word controversy

With each passing day, the BAFTA controversy has gotten worse and worse. It was plenty terrible on Sunday night, when John Davidson, a man with Tourette’s, involuntarily screamed the n-word at Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo on stage. We learned soon after that Davidson also screamed the n-word at Sinners’ production designer Hannah Beachler when she was leaving the BAFTAs to go to dinner. This was made so much worse by Alan Cumming’s offensively half-assed “we’re sorry IF you were offended” apology within the BAFTA show, then compounded when no one at BAFTA or the BBC thought anything of leaving the racist slur within the two-hour-delay broadcast. The bullsh-t apologies from BAFTA and Davidson have made this into an all-around sh-tshow.

After Sunday, we learned that Warner Bros had repeatedly approached BAFTA organizers and requested that the racist slur be edited out of the broadcast. BAFTA refused to do so, as did the BBC. They’re all playing some kind of hideous and racist game over there. Delroy Lindo spoke to Vanity Fair and he kept it brief, but he did say that no one from BAFTA had spoken to him after the incident. Michael B. Jordan has been silent throughout this catastrophe. Think about it – this is his first time being part of this kind of critically acclaimed and much-nominated film. It’s his first BAFTA nomination, his first Oscar nomination. And he was so proud to be part of the Sinners team, and he accepted the chance to present an award at the BAFTAs, only to have a racist slur screamed at him. According to the British outlet Metro, MBJ is disgusted by the whole situation, and his parents were there at the ceremony too. Note: this story is probably British tabloid BS, but it’s one of the few stories (especially in the British press) to really center MBJ and how he’s feeling. Officially, MBJ is staying silent. But this might be how he feels:

Michael B Jordan was left ‘disgusted’ after being subjected to a racial slur on stage while presenting at the Baftas. On Sunday night the American actor presented the first award of the night alongside his Sinners co-star Delroy Lindo. As the pair prepared to hand out the best visual effects award to Avatar: Fire and Ash, Tourette’s campaigner John Davidson was heard shouting the N-word, which prompted gasps across the audience in London’s Royal Festival Hall.

Following the incident, the BBC removed the entire awards ceremony broadcast from iPlayer after facing backlash for not cutting the moment – despite it removing a director’s plea to ‘Free Palestine’ elsewhere in the broadcast.

Soon after Lindo told Vanity Fair that he and Jordan ‘did what we had to do’ while presenting, but that he also wished ‘someone from Bafta spoke to us afterward.’

However, a source has now told Metro that Jordan, 39, was left ‘repulsed by the outburst’.

‘Michael had to do extensive research into the horrific psychological effects of racism to prepare for Sinners so was disgusted, repulsed and grossed out by John’s outburst,’ they told us. ‘He read works by savants like Joy DeGruy Leary to prepare for the role, so the incident really reminded him about how much work has to be done to drive racism underground. He was having a difficult day already after finding out about an upsetting incident in the Atlanta area recently, so this just made it worse. But, he is having a great year and won’t let this stop him. He’s focused on his new movie The Thomas Crown Affair.’

However, after watching the event unfold, the actor’s parents were left shaken. ‘His mum and dad broke down in tears when they saw what happened to him and Delroy, and it has been a horrible 48 hours for the family,’ they explained.

‘Michael’s community in Newark was part of the Great Migration, which literally happened because Black people were being terrorised in the South. Seeing Michael and Delroy being called that word up there really hurt their loved ones, and so everyone is trying their best to support each other. He postponed some plans in London to spend time with his parents as he recovers.’

[From Metro]

I’m glad that there’s an effort being made to center Michael and Delroy, although I would like to see an even bigger effort. They did nothing wrong, they were doing their jobs and trying to celebrate Sinners’ staggering achievements. They had every right to be at the BAFTAs and on stage, when their moment and their achievements were hijacked by Davidson’s involuntary racist slur. The situation has been compounded for maximum damage by the plainly racist British film establishment and the racist BBC. My heart really goes out to Delroy, Michael, Hannah, Ryan Coogler, Wunmi Mosaku, Teyana Taylor, Chase Infiniti and all the Black artists who were in the room that night and watched this racist bullsh-t unfold in real time.

BAFTA/BBC…like 🤬Trump did what they did to REMIND BLACK FOLKS OF THEIR PLACE AND THAT WHITE SUPREMACY RULES! And there is NOTHING anyone can say to convince me otherwise 😦

This hurts…because I was SO looking forward to ✨️Coogler Et Al✨️ getting their💐 & basking in some joy & light to beat back SOME of the darkness that is drowning 🇺🇸

But it took the ORIGINAL 🤬 Colonizers…the ALPHA of 🌎 modern White Supremacy to remind me what I am NEVA able to forget 😠

ITA that there was intent here. Whether or not Davidson was used as an unwitting tool is in question, but the broadcast and callous response was deliberate. And cruel. ITA also that Cooger and Jordan deserve to back in the flow of this fabulous film.

100% you nailed it. Which is why next year not a SINGLE POC needs to show up for this shithow. I don’t care if you’re nominated. Record and acceptance speech via video and DO NOT BE IN THAT ROOM.

This is the time to take a stand. People need to realize what is at stake here. Stop letting them use us for props and the pretense they are welcoming and diverse. Let it be an all White room for the next decade.

I hope lots of attendees decide to skip it next year. Throughout this mess, even as they struggle to explain what happened, the BAFTAS have also been smugly touting the fact that they are less racist than before, they have a more diverse range of films and nominees this year and they even awarded the Supporting Actress Award to a British Black actress. Yes, absolutely groundbreaking in 2026.

The message I hear is: “C’mon, we are not nearly as bad as we used to be, what more could you possibly want? Now shut up and pose for some “celebrating diversity” photos.”

      • Gabby says:

I would say not just skip the BAFTAs but swerve the whole UK for any reason….premieres, work, and especially royal events and Earthshot.

Everyone should be boycotting this racist sh*t show.

Wow. Yeah, we don’t know how he feels as this is a DM account. But it’s a rare article out of the uk that focuses on MBJ Delroy and Hannah. There should be more.

Some folks think the BBC did this on purpose to distract from the Andrew/Epstein mess. They have some explaining and apologizing to do, for the hurt they caused. I’m just disgusted by this whole mess.

And this plausibly devastating effect on MBJ, Mr. Lindo, and Ms. Beachler is why people keep insisting that Davidson apologize directly to them, bc the racial slur was hurled directly AT them! It also affected their loved ones and other Black people in the audience. Again, Davidson’s actions in the aftermath of his involuntary tics at a globally broadcast event count. His statement showed his understanding of the historical weight that word carries, which makes his lack of direct apologies to those he directly offended all the more baffling.

As for the BBC, perhaps that MP who demanded a written account of how this fiasco was allowed to happen should look into enlisting the requisite licensing/regulatory agencies to assist the BBC and BAFTA with their investigations. You know, so that everyone is on the same page about preventing this from ever happening again.

He’s tried, he reached out to their studio with an apology.

      • LaurenAPMT says:

Ange: Is that enough? That night was presumably one of the biggest, most proud moments of those individuals’ careers, and it’s now been tainted by having a vile, racist slur hurled at them on-camera for the world to pick apart and discuss. I understand and appreciate that it was unintentional, but how would YOU feel if you’ve spent a lifetime trying to earn the respect of your peers as well as the commercial success that comes so much easier for white actors/industry members, only to have one of the biggest barriers you face on a constant basis be thrown in your face with “I’m sorry if you’re offended, but…” from BAFTA and an “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to, but…” from the man who did it? MBJ, DL, and HB didn’t choose the color of their skin, but their differences have been pointed out in a (however intentioned) largely negative way and they’re also expected to be ok with the fact that it happened. JD didn’t choose to have Tourette’s, but we’re all expected to give him grace for it. There’s a huge disconnect there, it’s gross, and both JD and BAFTA should be taking every imaginable action to right this wrong. I’m not saying JD should apologize for who he is, but he should do everything he possibly can to apologize to the people he hurt with his outbursts, just as BAFTA should be doing everything possible to apologize for how horrifically they’ve bungled this entire situation and how they’ve done a major disservice to the black community and the Tourette’s community.

  5. Brassy Rebel says:

And BAFTA’s so-called president still noticeably silent. But he comes from a “very much not racist” family. 😒

His parents being there just makes it even worse. It was already tragic.

  6. Normades says:

I hope he continues to give them the cold shoulder and never show up for them again. Davidson will only be in the conversation this year but it’s really stupid of them to insult A list directors and actors whose careers will still be on the up for years to come

  7. jferber says:

I can see the dirty Brits using their racism as a distraction for rape and treachery. Because racism against Black people is so useful in so many ways to derangers.
