Charlize Theron at the LA Film Festival's "Spirit of Independence"

Charlize Theron was given the "Spirit of Independence" award at the LA film festival yesterday. Theron says that it's a misconception that you're typecast once you do indie films and can't make the transition to blockbuster movies. That's probably true if you're a statuesque blonde with great talent, but not if you're a short fat character actor:

The prize, given to George Clooney last year, was set up in 2005 to "recognise an individual for his or her commitment to artistic independence in film".

"What we love about her is she's made interesting choices," Dawn Hudson of Film Independent, the non-profit body behind the annual festival...

Her next role is as a heroin-addicted single mother in The Ice at the Bottom of the World, to be directed by British film-maker Sir Alan Parker.

"I think the biggest misconception about independent film-making is that if you do those movies you'll always be thought of as that kind of actor," Theron said.

"It's not true. If anything, I hope to have that kind of career, where you can go back and forth and do different things."

With an academy award and a new serious role in the works, Theron doesn't have to worry much about her career.

The Spirit of Independence Awards were presented by Virginia Madsen and Jimmy Smits and also honored directors Steve Collins and Amy Berg.

Here is Charlize at the Spirit of Independence awards with the Target dog, and her boyfriend, actor Stuart Townsend. Her left hand is not visible in these pictures, so we can't see if she's wearing that wedding ring again.

You can view a recap video of the MTV Movie awards at YouTube. (Embedding is disabled or I would have posted it here.)

There isn't footage of Alba hosting the awards in the recap video, but you can view Alba accepting her award for the sexiest role about 10 minutes into the video. She says "Thank you to all the perverts who voted for me!"

All of Jessica Alba's promos for the MTV Movie Awards are below.

Isla Fisher at the 2006 MTV Movie Awards

30 year old Isla Fisher is an Australian actress, model, and author. She is best known for her appearance in "Wedding Crashers" as Rachel McAdam's clingy sister, Gloria Cleary. She won the 2006 MTV Movie Award for "Best Breakthrough Performance" for that role.

Fisher is engaged to the hysterical Sacha Baron Cohen, aka Ali G.

Here's a little more about Fisher:

She played Shannon Reed, a fiery, opinionated teenager, on Australian soap Home and Away from 1994-1997. During this time, she wrote two books, Seduced by Fame, about an ambitious aspiring actress whose dreams come true when she wins a role on her favourite show, and Bewitched, about a naive ballerina who searches for her father and falls in love for the first time. Most recently, she starred in Wedding Crashers with Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn, and Rachel McAdams, and won praise for her comedic performance in the movie. In June 2006 she collected the Breakthrough Performance prize at the MTV Movie Awards for her role in Wedding Crashers. In 2006 she starred as Becca, a Manhattan party host in the offbeat relationship drama London alongside Jessica Biel, Chris Evans and Jason Statham.

Of Scottish parentage, Fisher now resides in England with her fiancé British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen (Ali G).

Isla's acceptance speech at the MTV movie awards must have been excellent. She is quoted as saying: "For most people, playing a bipolar nymphomaniac would have been a challenge, but I just played myself."

"Wedding Crashers" was the big winner at the 2006 MTV Movie Awards, taking home the golden popcorn for best picture and best on-screen team for Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson.

Christina Aguilera "regrets" that Britney wasn't at the MTV movie awards

Highlighting the fact that she's happily married and hot as ever with a thriving career while Britney Spears, well - isn't, Christina Aguilera said that she's oh so broken up by the fact that Britney couldn't make it to the MTV movie awards this year:

"It's a shame Britney doesn't go to any shows or awards anymore, because they are so much fun, even if you're not nominated for things, I miss seeing how hot she looked on red carpets and seeing her at awards and shows was the only times we really had time to catch up with each other because we're both so busy".

In case you want to give Aguilera the benefit of the doubt and don't think this is a dig at Britney, read what she said about Britney's wedding with K-Fed two years ago:

Christina Aguilera, meanwhile, branded the Spears-Federline wedding as "trashy, pathetic and low rent." "It's surprising,” Aguilera said at the time. “The whole affair seems somewhat pathetic."

They may have served chicken wings and hamburgers, but the wedding wasn't all that trashy. A rare hand-beaded invitation to the Spears-Federline wedding along with an initialed party favor candle is for sale on eBay for nearly $1,000. The favors were classy even if the relationship never will be. The eBay seller should have waited until the divorce announcement in order to drive up the price.

Here's trash-talking Christina Aguilera at The Ivy with her husband on June 2nd. She looks pretty tipsy, and it's not the first time.

Christina Aguilera at the MTV Movie Awards

Christina Aguilera performed her new single "Ain't No Other Man" at the MTV Movie Awards on Saturday. It looks like she removed her skirt onstage and stripped down to a pinup-worthy one piece bathing suit. That's about as far as she'll go now - she recently was convinced by her husband, Jordan Bratman, not to take her top off for a magazine. She wanted to go topless to prove that her breasts were real, but her husband was said to be "horrified" by the idea.

Aguilera's new album is inspired by the jazz era and includes gritty elements that add authenticity to her pop sound. You can download the first single, "Aint No Other Man," in mp3 format.

Jessica Simpson at the MTV Movie Awards

Jessica Simpson attended the MTV Movie Awards with her father and manager, Joe. She looked tolerant of her dad, but not thrilled to be with him.

Jessica is quoted as saying that Jessica Alba would do well as a presenter and that "all she has to do is strut her stuff."

She also supposedly drove Jamie Foxx crazy, but that doesn't take much for the 30 minute man:

Meanwhile, "Dukes of Hazzard" co-star Jessica Simpson, sporting a skirt as short as her marriage to Nick Lachey, drove "Miami Vice" star Foxx so crazy that he seemed to forget the beatbox noises he was laying down for co-presenter Colin Farrell's stroll across the stage.

Jessica wore an unfortunate black and red dotted print dress that was split down the front but somehow managed to hide her cleavage. Her breasts looked like round balls suspended under fabric. She appeared on stage with Dane Cook, her costar in the upcoming "Employee of the Month." (Here's Dane Cook's MySpace)

The MTV Video Music Awards air on Thursday at 8:30 p.m.

Jessica Alba at the MTV movie awards, 24 HQ photos

Jessica Alba hosted the MTV movie awards this year and took home the award for sexiest performance. She was honored for her role in Sin City 2.

This was the first year MTV had male and female performers compete for the same awards, with single categories not separated by gender.

"Brokeback Mountain" and "Wedding Crashers" won five awards:

Brokeback Mountain and Wedding Crashers were the big winners, scooping five awards between them.

Jake Gyllenhaal took the trophy for best performance for his role in the gay cowboy movie, and his screen smooch with co-star Heath Ledger was named best kiss.

Comedy Wedding Crashers won the best film, best screen team and best breakthrough performance awards.

Among the other winners were: Steve Carell - who won best comedic performance for The 40-year-old Virgin, Christian Bale - who won best hero for his lead role in Batman Begins, Hayden Christian - who was named best villain for Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith - and Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt scooped best fight for Mrs and Mrs Smith.

Here is Alba on the red carpet, during the show and in her press room appearance. Everything about her is gorgeous - except for her hideous shoes! Pictures [via]

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony at the ALMA awards

Perhaps Jennifer Lopez has stayed with Marc Anthony for so long because she looks so damn good standing next to him. Hell anyone would look good standing next to this man. If she's having trouble getting pregnant, it's probably due to Marc, since he's so obviously deficient of key nutrients. Maybe he has an intestinal disorder which would explain his foul mood and undernurished appearance.

Lest Angelika accuse us of poor research, Lopez and Anthony attended yesterday's NCLA ALMA awards, which honor "outstanding Latino artistic achievement in television, film, and music and the enhancement of the Latino image in the entertainment industry." The ALMA awards were hosted by Eva Longoria and will be aired Monday night June 5th at 9:30 EST on ABC. They must be right after David Blaine's dumb special.

Anthony was honored for excellence in music:

Among the night's highlights was a presentation of the CELIA CRUZ Award for Excellence in Music to the internationally renowned singer MARC ANTHONY. As he was accepting the award, the singer gave his famous wife JENNIFER LOPEZ, who was there supporting her hubby, a romantic shout out.

Our friends at yeeeah point out that Lopez has grey hair, but I'm younger than her and have that problem a few days a month, too, so I shouldn't mock. I also have much less access to professional stylists, so she's fair game: dye your roots, Jen.

Here are J.Lo and Marc Anthony looking serene and scary.

Ashlee Simpson to host the MTV Australian VMAs

Ashlee Simpson will host the MTV Australian Video Music Awards at the Sydney Superdome tomorrow night. Her sister, Jessica, will be on hand for assumed presenting duties:

"She (Jessica) is just going to be making an appearance," said Ashlee of her 25-year-old sister.

"She is going to be back there, getting my back and giving me high fives."

The sisters will walk the red carpet at Sydney SuperDome tomorrow night, with a string of other international talent confirmed to attend, including James Blunt and Snoop Dogg.

"As far as inspiration for the show, I am just going to get out there and have a good time," said Ashlee, whose parents and managers Joe and Tina Simpson are also in Australia.

"You might see me shake my booty!"

As well as hosting duties, Ashlee will perform two songs, Boyfriend and Love.

"I just usually chill out and hang out with my band," she said of her pre-performance plans.

"I don't like to ever think too much about anything. I just like to go with it."

Ashlee held a press conference for the event with fellow performing act The Veronicas. Lisa Origliasso of The Veronicas is dating Simpson's ex boyfriend, Ryan Cabrera. Simpson and Cabrera split in the summer of 2004, citing their busy schedules as young artists and a lack of time together. Simpson's "Pieces of Me" is reportedly about Cabrera.

Here are Ashlee and The Veronicas and a couple of random ugly guys in underwear at the press conference. We also have the pictures of Jessica Simpson arriving in Sydney that you're probably already seen.

Update: pictures of Ashlee "and her current boyfriend (and guitarist) Braxton Olita on a cruiser in Sydney Harbour." [via]

15 pictures total.

Jennifer Tilly had 2 half nip-slips in a too-tight knitted dress, and Patricia Arquette's makeup was hideously brown and cakey. She should have asked Alexis, her transgendered sibling, to do her makeup for her. Alexis looked well coiffed and well put together when compared to her melting sister.

Pamela Anderson gets booed at the Juno awards

Pamela Anderson got booed by the audience while hosting Canada's Juno awards in Halifax, Nova Scotia last night. She brought up the controversial subject of the annual seal hunt, which is sponsored by the Canadian government. Hundreds of thousands of baby seals will be clubbed to death this year alone, and Anderson, a committed animal activist, is vehemently against the practice. Anderson tried to inject her opinion into the music award show:

"I don't mind a little blood on the ice when it's a hockey rink, but I hate seeing blood on the ice when it's from baby seals," Pamela Anderson said...

"I have high heels and they dig in deep," Pamela Anderson added when audience booed her.

Even though we agree that it's barbaric to club baby seals, we have to point out that it was stupid of Anderson to threaten violence to a bunch of people who didn't want to hear about it.

The Junos looked like a good show, and featured performances by Coldplay and Nickelback.Michael Buble was the winner of the night, with four Junos for best singer, album, artist and pop album. Other winners included Nickelback for band of the year and Coldplay and The Black-eyed Peas in a joint win for best International album.

Here's Anderson, Chris Martin, Fergie, and the bands Hedley, Nickelback, and Theory of a Dead Man at last night's Juno awards. Hedley members drop trou to show their ass tattoos in a picture after the jump that is NSFW.

12 more pictures after the jump.

Pamela Anderson holds a press conference

Anderson held a press conference to promote her appearance as host on Sunday's Canadian Juno awards. She also spoke out against Canada's annual seal hunt when asked about a letter she sent Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper asking for a meeting about the hunt. Paul McCartne and Bridget Bardot are among the other celebrities protesting the cruel practice of bludgeoning baby seals to death for their pelts.

Many of the reporters' questions centered around a letter Anderson sent Prime Minister Stephen Harper requesting a meeting to discuss the seal hunt.

Harper refused, making it the second time he has turned down the celebrity's request.

"It's too bad. I wish he would have met me. I think it was awful he didn't meet with Paul McCartney and Brigitte Bardot," Anderson said.

"I think it's a very sad situation, and as prime minister, and to have the world stage for the first time, it's really a big mistake to keep up the seal hunt even after the outcry from all over the world against it."

Anderson has a petition with over 50,000 signatures against the hunt, and thinks it reflects poorly on her birth country.

Anderson will host the Junos, Canada's version of the Grammys, tonight. Coldplay, Black Eyed Peas, and Nickelback are among the performers.

Michael Douglas completes transformation into old curmudgeon

Michael Douglas talks trash about Brad Pitt after leaving his own wife for 25 year-younger Catherine "the Zeta is for cosmetic purposes" Jones. He gets a lot of plastic surgery to stay young-looking in youth-obsessed Hollywood, but decides to say screw it by growing a long beard. He's probably just trying to hide the evidence.

Michael Douglas was at the Bermuda International Film Festival today to receive the "Prospero" award for excellence in film. Bermuda has another reason to kiss Douglas' ass. He has entered into a partnership with Hilton to redo a hotel he owns on the island:

Ariel Sands, the Devonshire cottage colony owned by film star Michael Douglas’s family is going to be razed and rebuilt in a massive $100m makeover.

The actor attended a press conference today, Wednesday, with Tourism Minister Ewart Brown and new partners Hilton Grand Vacations Club to announce the plans, which will see the existing 47-room property transformed into a 214 room oasis...

Representative Bruce Sonneborn Jnr said the project would unfurl in phases. Once completed, it will be the ultimate in luxury living.

Here's Douglas the hotel mogul and grumpy washed-up film star in all his plaid-shirted glory.

Red Carpet at the TV Land Awards

Before I saw these pictures, I was not aware that Larry Hagman was still alive. (Apologies to Hagman's family and friends.) Other surprises included Bernie Kopell, the doctor from The Love Boat, Adam West, Batman, and Jerry Mathers, the Beaver. Julie Newmar, Tina Yothers, Monty Hall, Loretta Swift and William Shatner were also in attendance.

Julie Newmar, the original catwoman, is 73 and she looks fabulous without being over-preserved. Linda Gray has also aged semi-naturally. Mary Tyler Moore, on the other hand, needs to break up with her surgeon.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Picture Megapost

Sting presenting at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 21st annual induction ceremony
Late last night (our time) we posted pictures from the dinner following the 21st annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Here are the pictures from the event and press room.

Presenters at event included Sting, Shirley Manson from Garbage, and Kid Rock.
Performers included Metallica, Blondie, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Elvis Costello, Robbie Robertson, Herbie Hancock, Wallace Roney, Mike Stern, Solomon Burke, Clarence Clemons, Leela James, Marc Broussard, and Buckwheat Zydeco.

Ozzy Osbourne's band, Black Sabbath, was honored with induction after a long and difficult wait. Osboune most recently made the news with too much information about his sex life with wife Sharon. Osbourne is said to be impotent due to antidepressant drugs and cannot perform even after taking a handful of viagra.

Here's our earlier post with information about the inductees and the awards.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

The Osbournes at the Rock and Roll hall of fame induction ceremony
Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame held its 21st annual Induction Ceremony last night. Inductees honored included Black Sabbath, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blondie, The Sex Pistols, and the late Miles Davis.

The remaining members of the Sex Pistols refused to attend, and John Lydon posted an hilarious written message explaining why on his website. Lydon called the Hall of Fame a piss stain and cited the $25,000 cost to get a table at the event. Lydon also says that the museum is mistaken about the Sex Pistol's history and has never bothered to correct its exhibits.

Ozzy Osbourne used to hate the Hall of Fame too, and was so bitter that Black Sabbath had not been inducted by 1999 that he asked that they not be considered again. He must have changed his mind, because he was at the ceremony with Sharon and Kelly. They must have figured that if it cost $25,000 they should bring as many family members as possible.

Other attendees included Kid Rock, Dave Navarro (without his wife), Darryl Hall, and Sting.

    Empire Film Awards

Stars of Harry Potter at the Empire Film Awards holding their award
The British Empire Film Awards were held today. The awards are based on votes by the British public. The stars of Harry Potter were honored "for their outstanding contribution to the British film industry." Other winners included:

Best Actress - Thandie Newton (Crash)
Best Actor - Johnny Depp (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory)
    Best Movie - King Kong
Best British Movie - Pride & Prejudice
Best Directors - Wallace and Gromit
Best Sci Fi and Best Scene - Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
Best Newcomer - Kelly Reilly (Pride and Prejudice)
Lifetime Achievement - Tony Curits (presented by Roger Moore)

The scene honored from Star Wars Episode III was regarded as one of the worst by critics:

The Birth of Vader scene, in which the anti-hero Darth Vader learns that his wife has died, was mocked by critics from The Scotsman to the Toronto Star for making the central character resemble Frankenstein’s monster. The camera pulls back from Vader’s face as he throws his arms in the air and shouts: “Noooo!..."

The criticism did not deter the 25,000 voting members of the public, who preferred the scene to the dogfight in Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit and the arrival of the first alien craft in War of the Worlds.

Maybe most of the people who voted didn't actually see the film.

Here are some pictures from the awards and the press room. Seven more after the jump.

    Matthew McConaughey gets around

Matthew McConaughey at the Texas hall of fame awards

McConaughy's film Failure to Launch also opened on Friday. The film has been panned by most critics, although some say that good comedic acting and a talented support cast make it worthwhile.
