I was really surprised to hear that the Reese Witherspoon and Owen Wilson comedy How Do You Know finished a very low eighth at the box office on this, its opening weekend. I remember that Reese and Vince Vaughn’s Four Christmases really cleaned up at the box office when it opened around Thanksgiving, 2008, which was surprising because the film was generally considered to be total crap. How Do You Know didn’t fare much better with critics, with a current 35% on Rotten Tomatoes as compared to Christmases 25%. Still, it has Reese, Owen Wilson, Paul Rudd and Jack Nicholson in it. How could it go so wrong? Tron Legacy also opened this weekend, as did that Yogi Bear movie and wide releases of The Fighter and Black Swan, all of which trounced the generally unremarkable romcom How Do You Know. (Update: Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Tourist and Tangled also outperformed this film.) Here’s more from Radar.

The box office numbers this weekend come with more extremely bad news for A-List stars, RadarOnline.com is reporting.

How Do You Know, starring Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, Paul Rudd and Jack Nicholson, is one spectacular flop, and will be among the biggest financial disasters for any studio in 2010.

How Do You Know, which cost $120 million to produce with all those big star paychecks, took in just $7.6 million its opening weekend. That’s one huge ouch!

The Tourist, with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, continued its slide after a mediocre opening last week. It finished fifth this weekend, taking in a tepid $8.7 million.

Number one in the box office rally was TRON: Legacy 3 D, with an estimated $43.6 million in ticket sales.

But the real winner, for the third weekend in a row, is Black Swan. The Natalie Portman thriller took in another $8.3 million this weekend in fewer than 1000 theaters. It has already grossed more than the mere $13 million it cost to produce.

This makes me a little sad! I like romcoms and I love Reese. I would have seen this movie eventually, after The Fighter, Black Swan and Yogi Bear (I have a six year old). I guess that’s the problem. How Do You Know could have done well on a less crowded and less competitive opening weekend. They should have waited until next year to release it. It makes me wonder why they put it out for the holiday season. We have a lot more mindless action movies to look forward to instead of mindless chick flicks. I guess it’s a wash really.

This could be total crap, but we have the (on-set) photos to use as evidence, so what the hell? Honestly, that’s probably how this story started – someone at The Sun was sifting through the thousands of photos coming out of Woody Allen’s Parisian film shoot and they noticed that hey, Rachel McAdams and Owen Wilson are both kind of single right now, right? Why not? Why aren’t they boning? Thus, a tabloid story was born. And seriously, why not? It wouldn’t hurt either of them: he’s got issues and she’s kind of boring (meaning she’s not very tabloid-friendly because she keeps her private life pretty locked-down). Stranger things have happened:

OWEN WILSON and co-star RACHEL McADAMS are becoming more than just colleagues, according to sources on the set of their new movie Midnight In Paris.

Funnyman Owen and Rachel, who appeared in GUY RITCHIE’s Sherlock Holmes, have been openly flirting between takes on WOODY ALLEN’s new project, due out next year.

It must be said Owen’s new lady friend is a dead ringer for his ex, KATE HUDSON.

An onlooker said: “After one scene at a flea market in St Ouen outside Paris, Owen was playing with her hair and being really affectionate. Even for a pair of luvvies, it was very flirtatious. The gossip on set is that they are an item off screen.”

Owen deserves a break. The Zoolander star suffered serious depression and even tried to take his own life after he split up with Kate in 2007. Kate must have a thing for men with big hooters. Owen’s got a tremendous conk and she’s now dating generously nostrilled MATT BELLAMY from MUSE.

Tut, tut, crumpets, pip, pip, cheerio, etc. My opinion: Rachel is totally prettier than Kate. And I tend to think she’s too smart to mess with Owen, but hey, he could be fun for a fling. Kate Hudson and Alex Rodriguez’s breakup several weeks ago has been the subject of many whispers lately. At first, the reports basically claimed that Kate Hudson wanted to move fast and settle down, and either move in together or get engaged. A-Rod seemed to be fueling those rumors, and “sources” close to him painted Kate as an overly-involved, needy, smothering girl who couldn’t get over A-Rod and his centaur self. Many of the new rumors are in the same vein, so maybe there’s something there. First, the New York Daily News and OK! Magazine report that A-Rod was still in love with Madonna, and Kate was jealous:

Starlet Kate Hudson dumped Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez after eight months because his heart still belongs to Madonna, OK! Magazine reported.

Hudson warned A-Rod that if he continued talking to the Material Girl she would leave. She kept her promise when A-Rod kept calling and texting the singer.

“Kate was mad with jealousy,” said a source. “She gave A-Rod three chances to stop contacting Madonna. How would you feel if your new boyfriend kept calling his ex?”

The source said it broke Hudson’s heart but she didn’t want to be “the other woman.” “She said that if Madonna is what A-Rod wants then she can have him.”

Yeah, I’m with Kate on this one. If the guy I was dating with still texting his ex-girlfriend – who just happened to be Madonna – I would be livid. Meanwhile, Betty Confidential reported that Kate is still hellbent on getting back with A-Rod, and has been stalking him. Sort of. More like calling him incessantly and trying to prove that she’s not the same needy, smothering girl:

Breaking up is hard to do. Just ask Kate Hudson, who has been leaving phone messages for her ex, Alex Rodriguez, frequently since they split earlier this month. An insider tells BettyConfidential that the Nine star has been reaching out to A-Rod but the Yankee third baseman isn’t taking her calls.

While Kate has mocked the tabloids’ characterization of her as someone who gets too serious with guys too quickly — she told Harper’s Bazaar earlier this month, “I’m not needy” — the insider says her behavior tells a different story.

“Kate realizes now that she drove Alex away by being so pushy about marriage,’’ the source says. “She’s left him messages, but he hasn’t returned her calls. She wants to talk to him about how they can work it out without having to tie the knot.”

But Alex is telling friends that he’s moved on. According to the insider, A-Rod’s told pals that he’s not angry with Kate — he still has feelings for her — but he doesn’t believe that she would settle for anything less than marriage. “He thinks that after a month or two, she’ll start needling him about setting the date and he’s not ready to get married again,” the source says. “He may never be ready. Right now, he doesn’t see a wedding happening in the near future. He stayed with his ex-wife [Cynthia] longer than he should have to try and work things out, but it didn’t help. It wasn’t the answer.”

‘’Now Alex is enjoying his freedom and is having fun being in the company of new people. He’s not looking to get seriously involved with anyone and if he does, it won’t be a famous woman,” the insider says. “After being involved with Madonna and Kate, Alex doesn’t want to share the limelight.’’

As BettyConfidential previously reported, Alex has been spending time with his daughters, Natasha 5, and Ella, 19 months, in South Florida since he and Kate broke up.

But he recently returned to Manhattan, where he owns an apartment, and was spotted doing some last-minute Christmas shopping on Fifth Avenue and then stopping for a drink at Uncle Jack’s Steakhouse on 56th Street. “He’s just doing the bachelor thing,” the insider says. “He’s hanging out and is enjoying meeting new people.’’

As for Kate, she was in New York for the premiere of her movie, Nine, with her mom, Goldie Hawn, but returned to California where she tried to get into the holiday spirit by hosting her own star-studded Christmas bash at her Pacific Palisades home, sans Alex.

Sources say she and guests partied until the wee hours of the morning. The next day, looking a little worse for wear, Kate boarded a private plane with her son, Ryder, 4, and headed to Aspen, where she spent the holidays, as usual, with her mom, Kurt Russell, brother Oliver and his wife, Erin.

But while her Christmas was warm and loving, Kate’s plans for New Year’s Eve have reportedly been ruined in the wake of her split with A-Rod. According to Life & Style magazine, the couple was scheduled to appear together at several parties in Miami, but now Kate has canceled her plans to attend. So who will the exes be cuddling up to on New Year’s Eve? Stay tuned.

I’ve said it before, but I really don’t buy this version of Kate Hudson. I think she’s a fun girl who doesn’t take anything this seriously. She was probably hurt that A-Rod didn’t want to be with her, and maybe she did try calling him to try to talk things out, but I don’t really have an image of Kate being so… desperate, you know? She’s a pretty girl who likes to have fun, and there will always be men who eat that up.

Which is In Touch Weekly’s version – they claim that Kate has “wasted no time” in getting back in contact with her ex Owen Wilson. A source tell ITW: “They hadn’t seen each other for some time, but when things took a turn for the worse with Alex, Kate got in touch with Owen, They are reestablishing their friendship – we’ll see what happens.” ITW also notes that Owen “always seems available whenever Kate needs him” and that they “know each other really well” and “their friends think there are unresolved feelings between them.” All of this was probably written before Owen spent the holidays with a mystery girl (and there are photographs to prove it), but something does ring true about this. I’m not saying Kate and Owen will get back together, but I do believe they probably still talk a lot.

Yikes. This is a little human interest story I read in Page Six this morning, and it freaked me out a little. It seems Owen Wilson was recently in Café Habana in Manhattan, and he became quite taken with the waitress, Monica Mateo. So he asked her out – only to be refused. Simple story, right? “Hollywood Hunk Gets Shut Down”. Not so much. It seems that Mateo’s boss got freaked out and tried to force her to go out with Owen Wilson, telling her “You know what coffee means in Hollywood, right? . . . Don’t screw this up. Owen’s a good customer.” Yikes. Is he a manager or a pimp?

Turning down Owen Wilson for a date was bad for the career of a waitress at Cafe Habana, she claims.

Monica Mateo is suing the eco-friendly NoLIta eatery, claiming her hours were slashed after she rejected an offer by the “Butterscotch Stallion” to take her out for coffee, The Post’s Bruce Golding reports.

Mateo claims in a Manhattan federal court filing that restaurant manager Leslie Meenan went ballistic after learning of the snub, saying: “You know what coffee means in Hollywood, right? . . . Don’t screw this up. Owen’s a good customer.”

Mateo’s lawyer, Maimon Kirschenbaum, said the 30-something server already had a boyfriend and “had no interest” in the “Wedding Crashers” star, who once dated Kate Hudson. Cafe Habana owner Sean Meenan, Leslie’s brother, couldn’t be reached, and Wilson’s rep didn’t return our e-mails for comment.

That’s just gross. But, you know what? This isn’t Owen Wilson’s fault. I seriously doubt Owen went over to the manager and was like “That waitress won’t go out with me, she needs to be fired!” Owen probably didn’t know anything about it, and from what little I know about him, he seems like the kind of guy who would be horrified that some waitress lost her job over his advances. And yes, she wasn’t really fired, her hours were “slashed”. That’s the way some bosses handle it, and I do think the two things were related. Gross.

In Touch Weekly has a hilarious story abut Kate Hudson this week. This classic of tabloid journalism is called “Kate’s a Curse For Men”. In Touch runs down her past relationships with Lance Armstrong, Owen Wilson and Chris Robinson, as well as her current relationship with Alex Rodriguez. The point? Kate exhausts whichever guy she’s dating, and she basically destroys their souls. Plus, whenever she and a guy break up or maybe just get together, something really horrible happens. Oh my God, she’s a witch! Burn her, In Touch Weekly!

Some of the little photo pull-outs are funny – they’ve got some of the worst pictures of all of these men, with little snippets saying: “Alex Is Exhausted: ‘He’s burning the candle at both ends,’ says A-Rod’s friend. ‘He seems sluggish and tired’ since dating Kate.” And don’t forget this: “Owen Was Devasted: Owen Wilson reportedly slashed his wrists during a suicide attempt following their split.” The moral of this story is that Kate is a succubus, I think.

Kate Hudson and Alex Rodriguez stayed out until 2:30 on June 20, and then the next night they hit Blade Lounge.

But club-hopping probably wasn’t the greatest idea for the New York Yankees’ third baseman, whose doctor pulled him from a game two days before because of “fatigue” – even though he reserved 100 tickets for his family – according to the team’s general manager, Brian Cashman.

A buddy of A-Rod’s says: “He’s in the middle of baseball season, yet he’s trying to wine and dine Kate… the two don’t go together very well.”

According to a friend, Kate is known for commanding a man’s attention and getting him to bend to her whims – even it it’s not in his best interest. “Guys become addicted to her,” says the friend. But trouble follows after men date Kate.

In August 2007, Owen Wilson attempted suicide after their split. Two months after breaking up with Kate, cyclist Lance Armstrong was questioned about using performance-enhancing drugs (he tested clean). Kate’s ex-husband, rocker Chris Robinson broke up with his band and broke his hand after falling in love with her.

“I had never felt anything like that,” Chris admitted. “It kind of took me over.” Since their 2006 separation, the band is back together.

Can Alex escape another Kate-caused controversy? His friend claims that Yankees management have already warned him not to let his latest romance become a distraction.

I don’t really hate Kate – actually, I find her mildly amusing. While I don’t really find her acting career all that interesting, I like that she doesn’t seem to follow the typical “I’m going to sit around and be a victim and get sympathy” route that so many female celebrities do. Kate’s been dumped several times, and she’s done the dumping several times. She always moves on and she never feels sorry for herself, which I really admire. As far as the whole “sucking the life out of a man’s soul” thing… well, most of those guys totally deserve it. Except for Owen. I really do think she messed him up big time, but it’s not all her fault. She’s not really a witch after all.

No one really knows the current state of Kate Hudson and Owen Wilson’s relationship. Are they on-again or off-again? Are they living together, partying together, are they engaged or are they not speaking? Last I heard, they were still seeing each other on the downlow, and may be getting engaged at some point, sort of. But The National Enquirer is claiming that Owen and Kate are totally over. Not just that, but Kate’s mother Goldie Hawn was the one to break them up.

It seems Goldie isn’t the free spirit many would imagine – which I totally buy. I think Goldie’s probably pretty shrewd, and a half-decent judge of character. When Goldie saw Owen Wilson, she saw trouble. Goldie sat Kate down and told her that Owen was and is too big of a “risk” for both Kate and Kate’s son Ryder:

Goldie has a point. Even though I think Kate Hudson and Owen Wilson probably care about each other quite a bit, Owen needs to work on his problems by himself before he can be really committed to someone, especially a single mother with a young child. The reporting was pretty consistent that Owen’s friends thought Kate was a bad influence on Owen, though. They thought she was a love ‘em and leave ‘em type who would break Owen’s heart and leave him devastated and suicidal yet again. I’m not sure if I buy that Kate is such a maneater, but perhaps a timeout for the relationship will be a good thing.

Rumors persist about Kate Hudson and Owen Wilson. Multiple tabloid sources are claiming that the couple is still very much together, and now planning a wedding. Kate and Owen allegedly decided to stay in France for several weeks on a little romantic holiday, where Owen may or may not have asked her to marry him.

But where’s the ring? Ah, there’s a source who claims “Kate and Owen don’t feel the need for flashy engagement rings.” Who said anything about “flashy”? Just a simple diamond for a simple girl, hippie. So where will they get married, and when? Maybe in June, and perhaps in Hawaii, where Owen has a sun-kissed man-cave. Or perhaps Goldie Hawn’s Aspen home, but that seems unlikely. Kate got married to her first husband at the same Aspen home, why would she want to go back to the same nuptial-cursed place?

I don’t really buy that Owen and Kate are engaged, but I’d bet they’ve talked about marriage and at least considered it. They keep coming back to each other, there must be something substantial there. Something that can be built upon, but Owen may be too fragile still.

Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson looked cute and non-clingy at the premiere of their film Marley and Me in London last night. Aniston wore a sky blue strapless dress that was casually elegant if a little too long for her. She paired it with sandals, a stacked gold necklace, and a great looking sparkling bracelet cuff with a concentric design featuring a large stone. I thought she looked great. I loved how Owen Wilson wore a pair of dark sneakers with his suit.

Yesterday the news came out that Aniston has a new interview with Elle Magazine UK in which she basically says it really doesn’t matter what she says as it will be picked over and taken out of context.

My husband brought me home a stack of magazines from his trip to England last week and OK! magazine’s UK edition, March 3 issue, has what’s presented as a “new” interview with Jennifer Aniston. I started to write it up, thinking it was a new interview and mentally damning Aniston for always giving similar comments that don’t provide enough new information for a story. It turned out that parts of the interview were word-for-word the same as an interview already published in Hello! Magazine last September – that I covered. Either Aniston gave the interview in a press conference or it was resold to OK!, which presented it as fresh to coincide with the UK Marley and Me release.

Aniston is right that her words will be skewed and misinterpreted. I found just one example of how they were repurposed in the same country. People will read that, though, and think “Aniston always says the same thing,” without realizing that it’s an interview they’ve already partially read. It took me a while to even figure it out and I typed up both interviews from the magazines.

I saw Aniston and Wilson’s “Wetten, Das” appearance over weekend and they were both incredibly good sports and dealt with it all with class. Aniston ate a dog biscuit after Wilson lost a bet, even though she technically bet against him and shouldn’t have had to do it. Host Host Thomas Gottschalk said that it was so nice to see a star who was “easy,” meaning easy going. That’s a good way to describe Aniston, even as the press tries to make it hard for her.

Jennifer Aniston seems to have learned hot to not give a damn anymore in terms of the press. She recently told UK Elle she knows that no matter what she says or what she does, someone is going to misinterpret it – normally for the worse.

‘No matter what I say, things will always be taken out of context and misinterpreted, will always be turned around to make it seem as though I won’t let something go, or that I just keep talking about it over and over. I don’t owe anybody anything. I don’t owe anybody my side of the story. There are no sides! There is no bad guy and there is no good guy. There are no villains and there is no heroine in this story. It’s just not the case.’ Jennifer Aniston finally sets the record straight. She’s moved on, and is happier than ever.

‘ I remind myself every day that I am lucky. Look what’s out there. Look what people are really living through. There’s no comparison. I am happy’ reveals the actress who turned forty last month, but looks a decade younger with the help neutrogena soap , regular facials and an obsession with applying sunscreen.

I’m a realist,’ she says. ‘I know that if I eat nothing but burgers and chips, I’m not going to be hired for the parts I normally would. That might be fine one day, but not right now.’

I used to always get annoyed when I read celebrities claiming what they said had been misinterpreted or misquoted. I found it to be such an annoying excuse. But after writing for a year and a half, I’ve been shocked at how many times my own words have been completely misconstrued. I’ve learned it’s not very hard to say the wrong thing. Sometimes you try to be so careful that you end up writing completely boring drivel. Jennifer probably has the same problem – she could stick with bland generics, or be real – but she’s right, someone will always pull out the bad parts and twist them around.

Jen and Owen Wilson have been in Germany promoting the release of “Marley and Me.” They were on the variety show “Wetten dass,” and Jennifer ended up eating a dog biscuit. Well, Owen did too, but he had to. Obviously.

The show asks celebrity visitors to bet whether a special guest can perform the talent they claim to have. This time, it was a German woman who boasted that she could identify each of her team of Husky dogs by the sound of them lapping up soup. Wilson didn’t believe she could do it, while Aniston bet on her.

Then the show’s host, Thomas Gottschalk, told them that whoever lost the bet would have to eat a few dog biscuits. “I wish I had known the stakes first,” Wilson said. When the dog owner, who was blindfolded, guessed right, Gottschalk invited both Wilson and Aniston to join him in a biscuit. Aniston protested, “But I guessed right!” The host told her, “You’re a team, just like the dogs,” which prompted Wilson to put his arm around her shoulder and say, “Honey, we’re in this together.”

Gottschalk gave each of the actors a biscuit and said, “I’ll eat one, I’m the host. And Owen, you have to eat one. Jennifer, you can eat it if you want, but I’d really like to be able to tell my grandkids that I ate dog biscuits with Jennifer Aniston.”

Aniston noted that the biscuits were, “a little dry,” but was certainly a great sport. YouTube has a video of the show. Most of it’s in German, but you can hear what Jen and Owen are saying even though an interpreter is talking over them. I can’t think of many other celebrities that would go along with such ridiculousness, but it is endearing.

I like Kate Hudson and Owen Wilson separately well enough. But put them together and they are one hell of a toxic pair. This is their third try at a relationship. That means they’ve broken up twice before – the first time resulting in Owen’s suicide attempt. They seem like two fun, laid-back types, but put them together and major drama ensues.

Now The Sun claims that Kate is sure Owen has matured, and thus they’re trying for a baby. I never really saw Owen as the particularly immature one in the relationship. That implies that he’s the main problem, whereas most previous stories seem to lean towards it being Kate. Or at least a good 50/50 split. So keep in mind it’s The Sun, so grain of salt and all that.

THEIR relationship has had more twists and turns than any movie either have starred in – but KATE HUDSON and OWEN WILSON are firmly back together and planning to start a family. After going public with their renewed romance in Paris earlier this week, the pair are ready to take the relationship to the next level.

A pal of the Wedding Crashers actor said: “Kate and Owen initially got back together three months ago after realising they couldn’t live without each other. Now they are ready to become parents… Kate has been desperate for a brother or sister for RYDER – her first child with ex-husband CHRIS ROBINSON – for some time… It was a stumbling block previously with Owen. He’s always had a difficult time committing, but this time it’s different.

“Kate was with him throughout his recovery and that made Owen realise how much he loves her. They’ve discussed the idea of becoming parents at length and Kate has seen a change in Owen. He is now is truly committed and is showing a new-found maturity. He loves the idea of being a dad and has told Kate that he’s ready when she is, but the sooner, the better!”

The source added: “Kate is over the moon and really wants to start a family with Owen now she feels that he has finally grown up… The fact that he is ready to make that commitment to her has given her faith in the relationship.

“Kate’s family are all really behind the relationship as well after seeing how Owen has turned it around… Everyone is now confident the relationship will work out long-term and they will be together forever.”

Owen’s family is said to be less than thrilled about the relationship, and is pushing him to break up with Kate, who they claim has him “wrapped around her little finger.” Kate’s family would have to be pretty naïve to believe everything is all unicorns and rainbows in their relationship now. Especially if they think it’ll last forever. If these two had stability in them, they wouldn’t have broken up twice before.

I’m not trying to slam on Kate, but she strikes me as naïve in terms of relationships, and in terms of kids. If there’s any truth to this story, I’m guessing it’s that Kate thinks a baby will cement things or settle Owen down. That’d be a lot of pressure to put on a child. And it’s hard not to feel protective of Owen, given his history. I’m sad that he’d keep putting himself through this. I get why they care about each other – they have an intense history. But I think that in the long term, they’d each be better off with someone a little more stable and a little less like themselves.
