‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ wins weekend without Franco performance art

This box-office weekend was a bit of a surprise in a more ways than one. First up, Rise of the Planet of the Apes grossed an estimated $54.0 million domestically thanks in part to some fantastic CGI (very impressive on a $92 million budget) and a 81% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and despite an utter lack of James Franco performance art. In fact, this was a very non-Franco movie in that it was a blockbuster (which we haven’t seen from him since the Spider-Man movies), and there’s not a damn thing wrong with that fact. Seriously, if Franco would just admit, “Yeah, I occasionally make popcorn movies so that I can finance all of my Ivy League schooling and ridiculous performance art,” we’d all probably like him a lot better, right? But no. In fact, Franco gave an interview to Playboy in which he tried to prepare the public that this movie could (in his mind, unlike his other movies) very well suck terribly despite his elevating presence.

What occurred was the precisely opposite, for Rise of the Planet of the Apes was a an immensely enjoyable movie (I liked it too) despite the presence of Franco, who was playing the straight man with less life than a paper doll. Pajiba gave the film a positive review while also penning the following assessment: “Franco is in stoic Oscar-hosting mode, and though he’s onscreen for most of the film, you never develop much feeling for his character.” Ouch. And yes, Kaiser recently called out Franco’s douchey ways that don’t quite match up to an actor who supposedly “lives, breathes, kills, poops and dies for art.” If Franco is such an incredible artist, you know, he could’ve given much better than his flat, lifeless performance in this movie. In fact, I generally do like Franco as an actor, but I don’t like that his attitude in non-artsy endeavors is such that this film would’ve been better off if it had hired an actor who actually wanted to be there.

Meanwhile, The Smurfs continued its inexplicable reign by adding another $21.0 million for a domestic total of $76.2 million; and Cowboys & Aliens shamefacedly follows the little blue people with another $15.7 million for a total domestic take of $67.4 million. Ordinarily, that would be great news for a couple of summer pics in their second weekend, but Cowboys is hurting a lot due to its $200 budget and failure to meet very high expectations for a movie starring the current James Bond and directed by the helmer of Iron Man.

In huge upset news, the body switching comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman, The Change-Up, opened to a measly $13.5 million. This result is definitely cause for concern where gerbil-faced boy is concerned, and we are not experiencing the summer of Reynolds that was projected, for his presence as a leading man in Green Lantern only resulted in a $53.2 million opening weekend, which was at least $10 million below both the Thor and Captain America openers. While Green Lantern went on to a $160 million worldwide total, that doesn’t scratch the $200 million budget (plus promotional expenses). It goes without saying that the box office totals for Lantern cannot even be properly credited to any star power on Reynolds’ behalf, for the vast majority of people that bought tickets were fans of the comic. Certainly, Reynolds’ name on the marquee brought nothing additional to the table.

Meanwhile, Captain America: The First Avenger picked up another $13.0 million for a $143.2 million domestic total and a $246.2 million worldwide take. In other words, there will be a sequel and much more therapy for Chris Evans and his waxed-up nips. No complaints in that department, right?

I still kinda like him. He just needs to wake up from this “ART,ALWAYS,FOREVER” nightmare he’s having. Art mostly happens when you’re not so Art-obsessed *coughLadyGagacough*

JF is a deal breaker for me. He’s one of those actors who, if he’s in the movie, will repel me from said movie.

Conversely, I really don’t care for the Planet of the Apes franchise (blame it on too many movie marathons on weekend TV when I was little – my dad LOVED it!) but I watched the one with Mark Wahlberg, because I r-e-a-l-l-y like him!!!

  3. LOVE ANGELINA says:

I like that James Franco is so passionate and he is so happy. It may be making him sound a lil pretentious but James is trying to be humble and not let everything he is experiencing overwhelm him. I was thrilled this movie did so well, I really wanted to see it but not bad enough to pay. I can’t wait to see Fright Night next week.

And that’s without having opened in many countries in Europe and Asia.

Nope! I really like/root for him. Regarding the waxe-up nips: unnecessary but if they want him to look that way, I promise I’ll kiss the boo boo (and some other things).

Went to the movies over the weekend and saw both Apes and Cowboys and Aliens. Our plan was to only see Cowboys but once we saw Planet of the Apes showing we changed plans and I’m glad we did. Planet of the Apes was pretty good not as good as the original but I’d suggest someone see it at the theater. Franco was an after thought to Serkis’s mo-cap Ape and John Lithgow.

Cowboys and Aliens was meh. People were getting up and leaving during the movie. I overheard someone from the back saying “this is the weirdest movie I’ve ever seen”. I’m sure hard core action lovers might like it but not so much other viewers. When I asked the people with me if they liked it they said no.

Edit: I would suggest you wait to see Cowboys and Aliens on DVD.

I will see Planet of the Apes bc I love Frieda Pinto. James Franco is just pretty.. I don’t like him at all.

I think the change up looks cute, I’ll definitely get it on demand. And I have no freaking clue why someone would go see the smurfs.

  7. Original Tiffany says:

I finally saw Harry Potter and it was amazing. Apes are next-ticket prices here are obscene! Makes CA look like a bargain.

  8. searching4grace says:

@ Original Tiffany, we went to see Harry Potter, too! It was awesome!
But the trade off was I had to go see Apes. Loved John Lithgow. I absolutely adore that man. Franco was…meh. Thank goodness he wasn’t the one the story pivoted on. It was a good movie. Long.

  9. Sinder says:

Very entertaining movie. Pinto was a complete nonentity whose role should have been scrapped. Franco was fine, as was John Lithgow as his father. The special effects made this movie.

  10. lucy2 says:

I can’t believe it was a decent movie, the previews were so bad that people in the theater with me were laughing at it.

I love Jason Bateman, so I’m sorry his movie didn’t do well, but hopefully this will make studio execs stop putting Ryan Reynolds in everything.

  11. Hannah says:

I was really excited for Cowboys and Aliens, and I wasn’t too disappointed by it either. Olivia Wilde’s presence irritated me at first but it made sense later in the movie, she just didn’t look right in that kind of role.

I really liked the new Planet of the Apes, but I’ll agree the best parts were the apes. Franco and Freida were sort of an afterthought, for me anyway.

I can’t wait to see this movie!!! My boyfriend and I were scheduled to see it this weekend but went to the beach instead. I think it’s definitely in the cards for us this weekend though!

I don’t get the Franco hate though. He seems aight…

  13. ZenB!tch says:

I refuse to see this. I can’t stand James Franco and they are F*ing big time with a classic. Thanks but no thanks.

RE: RR I don’t know how he got the sexiest man alive thing. He’s bland at best.

  14. Lucy says:

I saw Planet of the Apes this weekend and the first thing we all said after the movie was over was that James Franco was just there in the movie, he did not do any acting, showed no emotion. Absolutely looked like he was embarrassed to be in this movie. On a good note, Ceasar the ape was awesome!
