Does Britney have ADHD and is that why she’s taking frequent breaks on X-Factor?

Radar has an interesting story that attempts to explain why Britney keeps taking what seem to be abrupt breaks on the set of X-Factor. (She’s taken at least two that we’ve heard of, although Simon Cowell and Britney both deny that there’s any issue.) According to their sources, Britney suffers from ADHD, which makes her unable to concentrate and focus on a task for an extended period of time. Radar’s source is kind of harsh about it, and compares Britney to a ten year-old kid. Supposedly the ADHD meds interfere with other medication she is taking, so she can’t be on both and that’s contributing to the issue. Here’s Radar’s story:

“Britney was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in her teens and used to take medication for it,” a source close to the situation tells RadarOnline.com exclusively. “The medication helped her deal with it, however, she can’t take it now because it interferes with the other medications she takes for her mental health issues. Britney’s current team of doctors strictly prohibit her from taking Adderall or Ritalin, which are commonly given to people with ADHD.

“Simon was made fully aware of Britney’s medical history before the contract was signed, so this certainly isn’t a big surprise that she needs to take breaks during the audition process. Look, Britney basically has the attention span of a 10-year-old at times. It’s not alarming to Simon at all and he is fully supportive of Britney doing whatever she needs to do during filming.”

According to the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Association, about 8 million adults suffer from the disorder and symptoms include overall restlessness, poor sustained attention to tasks and impaired impulse control.

“Britney’s medical team works with her to deal with her disorder without medication and daily vigorous exercise is what often works best for Britney. Her nutrition is closely monitored and so is her caffeine intake, because that can also enhance Britney’s inability to focus. Simon knew what he was dealing with before he ever signed her to join the show and it’s not shocking to him. Of course, it’s rather disconcerting for people that see her do it for the first time but it’s truly nothing to be alarmed at. In fact, Simon would have been surprised if she hadn’t taken breaks during judging last week, this means she is involved and engaged in the process,” the insider says.

I wanted to ask something to our readers with ADHD about coffee, since this article mentions it. I had a boyfriend in college with ADHD and he said that coffee actually helped him focus, which would make sense because the typical ADHD drugs are stimulants. I guess it depends on the person, but does coffee help you? I googled it and found that there are cases where moms give coffee to their kids with ADHD.

Meanwhile US Weekly adds a little more to this story in their print edition this week. They claim that Britney is talking up the contestants so much that she’s giving them false hope. They make it sound like she’s less of a Paula Abdul encouraging type and more of an indiscriminate flatterer. They quote a source who claims Britney “always said nice things, even telling one mediocre singer he could be ‘bigger than Justin Bieber.’ Simon was shocked!

They go on to say “I don’t know how she’s going to handle the live shows,” which is pretty much what all the Internet chatter has focused on lately.

As I’ve mentioned before, Britney pulled off two grueling world tours in the past few years since her incident(s). I think she’s capable of doing this gig, but we’ll have to see how well she can bring it, and what kind of judge she is. Whatever happens, X Factor has received a ton of buzz for Britney. Simon knows that people are going to watch just to scrutinize her. It’s happening already and the show hasn’t even aired. That’s no small part of the reason why she was worth $15 million a year to them. So, do you think Simon is setting up these stories for publicity? I wouldn’t be surprised.

She looks so scared/uncomfortable in the last pic.. 🙁

  2. Erin says:

I have ADHD and for me, who takes meds for it, coffee doesn’t have the same effect. Weird, but coffee actually makes me jittery, where the meds do not. I know it’s different for everyone though…

Whoever pushed her into doing this should be ashamed of themselves.

  4. Skaffeke says:

who are the persons in her inner cirkle that love her so much, that they just let her go down like this? Not taking cae of her mental issues, so she can be the ‘milkcow’,so many around her, like her to be?
Now its just like they’re milking the cow, before her last breath. So sad!

If she can’t pull it together to sit for more than a few minutes without being directed there are going to be long taping days at that show. She seems to be able to last just about the same time a song when she tours. It’s odd for an adult not to be able to sit in a chair for more than a few minutes, even with ADD, plenty of kids and adults have this and get through the school day and a work day without walking off every five minutes. It makes her seem crazier than she appears to be, in her very controlled life.

  6. Courtney says:

This sounds harsh but maybe if she laid off the cheetos and diet coke she may start to feel a little better… obviously not “cure” anything but come on! They are not taking care of this woman! They are her cash cow and are keeping her just-enough happy to keep her from going off the wagon again

Love her ass in the last photo

I don’t know anything about ADHD but I know that caffeine can mess with medications for anxiety and depression meds. My doc told me that as little as 1cup o coffee a day can make anxiety meds completely ineffective.

I have ADHD, and don’t take meds. Yes, exercise is the best help (but we are talking about at least 2 hrs of HR>150 at a time.) Once a week, on Saturday morning, I allow myself 2 shots of espresso after 2.5 hrs cardio and Pilates. And that’s the only 10 mins of my life when everything makes sense…

  10. risa says:

I have ADD… And its difficult to handle… But it does not eliminate self control. I can sit still even f I’m not attentive. I call BS

    • LeenB says:

Agreed. My brother has ADD and while meds help him with school work, he still has self control without them.

  11. Heidi says:

I have a feeling this will not end well for her. Or, in the very least, she won’t return for season 2, if XF even lasts that long

  12. Manayer says:

what is a Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder? can someone dumb it down for me? sorry english is not my first language.

    • another nina says:

It’s when you have troubles getting focused, and have troubles staying still. Usually it’s boys, who are hyperactive. Girls can be day dreamers.

      • Manayer says:

thank you! my cousin has the same problem, it’s just the name of the disorder is deferent in my language.

      • Wiffie says:

This is why girls are misdiagnosed all the time… People say they’re “just too dreamy”. Not sure if this is what you meant to say, but as a female who had to miss graduation in lieu of summer school, and fail her first two attempts of college despite
the highest act score in her grade and high
iq, it is disheartening when girls with genuine difficulties concentrating in school are dismissed as dreamy, unmotivated, and just not trying hard enough. I was diagnosed in my mid 20 s, and maintain a 4.0 gpa in college now. I do see now, while working as a barista, my 12 shots a day to keep focus and center was a desperate attempt at self medication.

  13. G says:

I agree that she did get through her 2 world tours….. BUT there were probably 2 dozen people making sure she ‘made it’.
Being shuttled from one place to the next, everything taken care of for you…. LIVE on a Idol may prove to be a lot different.
She can’t lip sync her way out of this one…. I hope she does well but am preparing for the worst…. *fingers crossed*

everybody is diagnosed with bipolar nowadays… and adhd… yawn…

  15. Bex says:

ADHD is a pretty common ride-along with bipolar. And you can’t really judge what someone else is going through by what you have gone through/what you’ve seen someone else go through. These diseases affect us all differently.

  16. ria says:

She should not be doing this. Her fiancee, mom, dad should have put her well being before $. Simon is no better he justs wants ratings in any form, meltdown or not, preferably meltdown as everyone would tune in for that mess. After her hair shaving, public meltdown it was not long after her family gained control of her career and finances, she was back in the studio on the album “Blackout” and soon a tour followed. Its all about money for them, yes her father got her back on track, but she has lost her sparkle. They are dependant on her bringing in the money. Jason, I dont trust him at all and he creeps me out.I hope she is happy with Jason, but something is off about him.

  17. Scarlet Vixen says:

My husband has ADD, and hasn’t been able to take meds for years because he’s a pilot and no ADD meds have been approved by the FAA. He self medicates with caffeine and cigarettes. Caffeine and nicotine tend to have the opposite affect on people with ADD and can help them focus. When he tried to quit smoking a few years ago he said after just a couple months he felt like he was literally going crazy because he simply couldn’t focus on anything. He used electronic cigarettes now (basically a nicotine inhaler) and drinks coffee throughout the day.

  18. HappyJoyJoy says:

ADHD on women is different and more difficult to treat. She doesn’t seem ADHD to me, though. Manic, yes.

  19. ZenB!tch says:

I had AHDD as a small child – not sure if it goes away or it was mild and I trained myself to deal with it like I did with dyscalculia.

I would spin in the room in school but if they asked me what they said, I could answer. If they made me sit still I would zone out. I eventually learned to write it all down and not just sit there and try to listen.

I don’t think I could even as an adult. sit there and listen to boring auditions all day. I could sit there but not sit there AND LISTEN. I would hate to be bipolar and AHDD at the same time. I know with anxiety disorder – the only thing I haven’t figured out yet – the meds for one are the opposite of the other. If I was put on a stimulant I would probably do something bad, like Demi Lovato level bad. I can’t see my friend X who has BP2 on a stimulant either. I think she would also turn into Demi Lovato.

  20. ZenB!tch says:

Question for my bipolar sisters, is BP also a seratonin imbalance like depression and anxiety disorder?

  21. Sunny says:

I have ADHD and thank you to those who pointed out the difference between how it usually presents in women and men. I used to take a small dose of Vyvanse with a small dose of Adderall, but now I just do the Vyvanse (I think it was the Adderall that was making already poor sleep habits worse). My symptoms are similar to “daydreaming”, but I also get very hypersensitive to any kind of unexpected stimuli, very irritable, and holding an extended conversation was nearly impossible. I would have to read a page in a book 5 times or more because I would literally forget what I read, I would make very careless mistakes, it was very crippling. The vyvanse honestly gave me my life back. Only, because I actually do have ADHD I get none of the “fun” side effects…appetite is the same, my focus is normal…coffee just makes me jittery but not more alert, although that could be because I don’t tolerate coffee very well because of GI issues. I will say that in my younger days when I “dabbled” in some not so great substances I had no reaction, my body just felt normal, a little calmer. When I told my doc before going on the vyvanse – which I had desperately wanted to avoid – he kind of laughed because, well, it was a stimulant drug. Luckily I’ve never had withdrawl symptoms, no issues with abuse, but again – if you truly need the drug it isn’t the “fun” experience recreational users report.

One of my closest friends has Bipolar disorder and ADHD, and I know immediately if she is not taking her medication (much like my poor bf knows immediately if I ran out of mine). Everyone’s medication regimes effect them differently, so I’m always hesitant to say right away its an interaction between medication.
