Jon Gosselin is a waiter, it’s ‘disgusting’ to suggest he can’t make ends meet

The good news is that Jon Gosselin is working an honest job after squeezing the last bit of cash out of his dwindling fame. Good for him. Kate Gosselin should follow his lead and get back to work as a nurse. The other side is that Jon Gosselin is giving interviews trying to get more fame out of the fact that he’s fallen so far from where he was. Jon vowed in 2011 to have given his last interview, which of course didn’t happen. There were several subsequent interviews with Jon complaining about his money situation and admitting that he’d moved to a cabin in a remote location. Now Jon is working as a waiter in a restaurant, and he wants everyone to know to that he’s not struggling and that it’s “disgusting” to think he is. The guy has admitted that he can’t pay his high child support. It’s not such a stretch to think that he can’t make ends meet, but he finds that offensive.

On if he’s struggling to make ends meet
No. I don’t know why people said that. They said it because I’m waiting tables, which is really disgusting.

On if he’s hit rock bottom
I’ve hit rock bottom like 20 times. I just bounce back and go somewhere else.

On how hard it is to find work
Next to nearly impossible to find work.

On if he made millions
Uh no. I mean I haven’t grossed millions and millions of dollars. I don’t like to talk about money that much.

On waiting tables
At first I was nervous because I was like, “How are people going to react?” But then I’m thinking, “Well, it’s fun and I get to talk to people.” And they technically already know me … they’re like, “Are you the guy?” I’m like, “Yeah, I’m the guy.”

On partying with Christian Audiger and attending events
I was living the high life because everyone was paying for it. And I had to earn income to pay for my legal fees.

I went there [to big cities] because it was contracted so I could earn income to pay my attorneys to protect me in court.

On if he still parties
I [party] now on a different level

On if he regrets the reality show
I don’t regret anything, because you learn from your mistakes. That’s what builds you to who you are today

[From ET Online via People]

Jon is doing what he has to do to survive and support his kids, and I guess an interview with Entertainment Tonight is included in that. He came across as defensive like he resented the fact that he had to make his situation known. So I’m torn about this. On one hand I really respect the fact that he went to work as a waiter. That takes some humility and hard work. However, he did just do this interview and it included the name of the restaurant where he’s working. Did he get the job in exchange for the free publicity for the restaurant? I still remember how up his own ass Jon used to be, so this is real progress for him.

He had the only ounce of character…. not the brightest, but at least he has some sense of duty and ethics between the two of them. I applaud him.

I think also he is calling the gossip abotu him disgusting– as in mean spiritied to say he is a failure for being a waiter. In no way does it make him a lesser person for doing what many people do for a living, and at least he IS working, so yes, its ‘disgusting’ that people would attack that.

    • Jayna says:

      Character? LOL

      • Fairybreath says:

I think he does have character because he is working to support his kids. Unlike Kate who has the audacity to say she would like to be on a show like The Talk. No one wants to see or hear from her. Her 15 minutes is so over!!

  2. Anki says:

Good that he’s making an honest living but couldn’t he find a job in the computer sector again? That must pay more than waiting tables.

    • Lflips says:

That’s what I’m thinking and that’s why I’m inclined to believe this is just another ploy to regain the spotlight. It will be interesting to see how long this new gig lasts.

    • ahoyhoy says:

Unfortunately with the kind of field he was in, leaving it for a few years means he has tons of re-training to do.
Serving is very good money, btw. I used to make more than the cubicle-dwellers I knew.

      • Sonya says:

It is. I actually ended up serving on the side of my college-degree job to make extra cash, and then, at one point, quitting my college degree job to serve full time…just because I was making way more money that way.

      • Maria says:

Me too…in 1980, I was clearing 800 dollars a week tax free – working three jobs mind you but still waiting can pay WELL: it is a fine job. Serving other people food and drinks, very clear and clean.

    • Sonya says:

In the computer sector? You can’t just leave the computer sector for a few years and come back to it, especially in this economy. He got shelved in that field, potentially after several months after leaving it.

    • Nono says:

Anki, the IT industry is a very fast-moving field. Once you’re out of it for a few years, you’re obsolete and have to catch up on everything you’ve missed. Too, he’s old; many IT companies would rather hire younger employees with less experience so they can pay them less. The IT industry, especially the more populist/commercial aspects of it, is quite ageist.

I’m not saying it’s impossible, but it’s a lot of hassle, and maybe he’s just tired of it. Or maybe he’s doing the odd IT job on the side, too, and we just don’t know about it.

      • emmie_a says:

Jon Gosselin is old??? He’s 36!

      • Funtimes18 says:

How old are you to think that 36 is old in any industry?? 12??

I’m 47 and work speaking with people around the worls to lay fibreoptic lines. I must be dead to you!

      • SamiHami says:

If Gosselin is old, and Funtimes is dead, then my husband is a fossil. He’s 55 and does IT for a level I trauma center, maintaining the network for the ambulances and the helicopter, plus the adult and peds ERs.

      • amilu says:

My brother is only 32, and he’s already thinking of a backup career. He is convinced that the company he works for (as a systems administrator) will soon get rid of him because he’s “too old.” Years of service be damned. He says the same thing; the company wants young graduates whom they can pay less.

      • Erinn says:

I agree to a certain extent. I’m 23 – working in the IT field. You have to be on the top of your game constantly. I’m currently building templated sites for customers and doing basic design work. I’m currently working on a portfolio to get into a full time custom design position.

I know in general 36 isn’t old – but with the high rate of burnout in the field and the fact that he’s stepped away from it for years, companies likely WOULD favor a younger fresh employee.

This does depend on the job though. Working with fibre op cables is a lot different than working in database management or programming.

      • fabgrrl says:

I spent my early/mid twenties in IT, and that is where my husband works. It’s not that 36 is old, per se, but that one generally moves into IT management roles by that age.

      • Nono says:

Funtimes, fibreoptics is not the same as coding. It’s a niche area that needs special qualifications and experience. You’re in a privileged position.

SamiHami, your husband’s job is peripheral to the IT industry. The IT industry proper is basically an entirely different monster.

You’d all be aghast at how young the IT industry skews. For example, Electronic Arts, the biggest video gaming company in the world, has “senior” staff that are in their early 20s.

I’m not surprised that there aren’t more women in the field- just one year away can set your career back half a decade, the hours and stress are highly undesirable, and unless you get into a management position you face a lay-off in your early 30s. It’s an industry that pretty much no one stays in for long unless they get very lucky.

    • L says:

Hiring in the IT sector is at rock bottom right now. Alot of people are struggling. If he’s been out of the game for 5-6 years he’s not going to be competitive with people who have been in the industry that entire time.

I think you’d be surprised what waitstaff can make at a successful restaurant.

      • Stephanie says:

Actually, my hubby worked as a server for a while and now he also bartends. He has made more money than me every year and I make a good living. If you work at a good restaurant you can bring in way more money. We live in Silicon Valley and there are actually people that were making less money at their corporate jobs and chose to work full-time as servers.

    • holly hobby says:

A lot of the PC jobs are going offshore to India and other foreign = cheap pay = countries. It is also a youth oriented industry so John doesn’t fit into their plans – unfortunately.

I’m not going to knock him for making an honest living. It’s not like he’s crying to the magazines every day about how he refuses to get a real job to raise his kids – sorry Kate.

  3. Anastasia says:

They split custody 50/50, so neither one of them has to pay child support to the other.

I say good for him. Unlike her, he’s willing to work hard. She’s been sitting on her butt trying every get rich quick scheme she can get her hands on since the show was canceled just to avoid real work. She thinks she’s above it, obviously.

    • Sonya says:

She was the one shelling out the money from the show like it grew on trees instead of saving it, too. Surgeries, fashion designer clothes, vacations. Jesus, she really thought that lifestyle would last forever.

Jon was the one that actually seemed more connected to reality. Unfortunately, his reality was that he was married to her, and knowing that reality for too long turned him into a megadouche. It was always a little hard for me to blame him, even when he was in the wrong.

    • emmie_a says:

But I thought he was paying Kate child support at one time? And she was trying to take him to court for not paying?? I hope you’re right and he doesn’t have to pay her a cent…

BTW, there was a blind item the other day that everyone thinks is about John: He was supposed to be on DWTS but as soon as Kate found out she started calling people and got them to ax the deal. Sounds like something Kate would do.

      • Lady D says:

I didn’t think Kate had that kind of pull at DWTS. I doubt she made friends, never mine close friends from the show. Who exactly would she call to get him booted? That show, like all the others on TV, are in it for the money. If they thought Jon meant ratings they would’ve hired him.

      • Montréalise says:

I certainly wouldn’t put it beyond her to make those calls, but I’m very surprised she would have any clout with the decision makers of the show. She is a former reality tv star – emphasis on former – and I can’t imagine why any producer or director would care what she wants or doesn’t want.

    • Kim1 says:

They dont have joint custody. She just explained in People magazine his visitation agreement

      • Kim1 says:

Also Jon told ET he lives in a cabin with no TV or internet. No place to live if you have 50/50 custody of 8 kids.

  4. Anastasia says:

I meant to add, he was working as an IT consultant for quite some time and I thought he was still doing that freelance, along with the waiting tables.

Nothing wrong with doing honest work.

  5. Erinn says:

He’s still leaps and bounds above Kate in my books. He seemed to care so much more about the kids for the most part.

After a while he started shutting down though, and got a bit on the douchey side with the demise of his marriage.

I’m still impressed that he got a real job unlike many fallen reality stars.

  6. DreamyK says:

Jon Gosselin broke into his ex-wifes hard drive and stole information to write a tell all book about the mother of his 8 children. He is loathsome.

Speaking of loathsome, blindgossip has a blind that screams Jon and Kate: apparently Jon was going to be on Dancing With the Stars and Kate torpedoed it, enter Bill Nye. Weird if true. Kate has been screaming for child support but apparently wants Jon not to have any fame whatsoever more. These two. Ugh.

    • yuck says:

Well, that’s her claim, and she’s suing him on that account. But he just filed a motion to dismiss that pretty much shows she has no standing. Of course, with her little cookbook about to hit the stores, it’s pretty clear why she timed the lawsuit the way she did, since she could have filed FOUR YEARS AGO when she and her lawyers publicly proclaimed that he was “hacking” her computer. In six months of cookbook pre-sales, under 1,000 copies sold. Someone is going to be going in the hole big-time on this vanity project, and I just hope it’s not her kids’ trust accounts.

    • Erinn says:

And said book – that a third party wrote – reveals the abuse that Kate has done to those kids. So she’s suing to make sure no more of that gets out. I think she’s far more despicable.

      • DreamyK says:

All that animosity aside, that is the mother of his children. She has been supporting them financially, not him. He is loathsome and I also think his motion will fail. He hacked into her private correspondence without her knowledge.

      • Erinn says:

All that animosity? Record of her beating THEIR children coming out is simply something you can push aside. She also waited about 2 years to file – if she was that concerned why not file beforehand?

  7. Maria says:

    He’s a douche but he’s working.

Folks are entirely way too uppity about jobs, even if it’s a publicity ploy, I repeat: HE’S MAKING A LIVING.

    Nothing wrong with hard work.

    • Jill says:

      Agreed.

Also, people don’t realize that some times the less desirable the job, the higher the pay. Not always, of course. But many people are happy to work jobs that might get their hands dirty, but keep them in good physical shape, pay well, offer overtime pay and have fairly good job security (b/c no one else wants them), etc…

    • Assistant Rachel says:

      This, exactly!

  8. Erin says:

Jon did what anybody getting out of a horrible marriage to a money-grubbing fame whore-nightmare would do – he went a little nuts. It happens. Watch one episode of their show – if you finally escaped that, you’d go a bit douchey for a while too.

    • Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

Kate behaved towards Jon like a mean drunk on hard alcohol. He withstood a lot of verbal abuse – no one should have to live like that – I wonder if she is a drunk.

    • Maureen says:

I agree. I’ve always felt she drove him to it. I truly believe Jon Gosselin is an abuse survivor.

  9. Karen81 says:

Its an honest days pay. I don’t know why people feel the right to bash him for it.

  10. MonicaQ says:

Good luck to him. Nothing made me lose my faith in humanity like being a waitress, a door greeter, and a barista in college. I met nicer people being a work study security guard and they were usually drunk and belligerent.

  11. Gia says:

He is the lesser of 2 evils. What he ever saw in the ex wife I will never know. He’s a good example to his children. Best of luck to him.

  12. Dawn says:

My sense has always been that TLC and Kate made sure that this man would be vilified by the general public as a cheater when in fact it was Kate who asked for the divorce (before there was any cheating) and refused to do anything to try and save the marriage. I give him credit for working and after everything that he has been through I think I would be bit defensive in the media as well. I think Jon was a young guy who got caught up with a very controlling sociopath of a woman and has paid a very huge price for doing so. I only hope he still has a good relationship with the kids that he cared for far more than their mother ever did.

    • emmie_a says:

“My sense has always been that TLC and Kate made sure that this man would be vilified by the general public…”

This is soo true! TLC saw the Gosselin’s as their cash cow and as much as I hate her, Kate was the biggest draw and brought them a lot of money — And that earning power bought her TLC’s loyalty along with their PR, management and legal team. That’s a lot of power for Kate. So it’s Jon against Kate and her team. He had no chance… But I’m happy to see he’s still surviving, no matter what Kate puts in his way.

  13. Feebee says:

I can’t think of much to say except that if Jon Gosselin turned up at my table as the waiter I’d seriously think I was being pranked.

  14. lucy2 says:

Neither of them seem like very good people, but at least he’s making an effort to support himself and his kids, and honest work is honest work, no shame in it.
That’s a vastly better example to set for the kids vs. Kate and her desperate clinging to fame and being rich.

  15. swedish chef says:

I’d be defensive too. Entertainment meida loves to do pieces about one-time “celebrities” who have crashed and burned and no longer living the high life. There are enough morons in the world who like to make fun of that. I very much agree that he did some douchey stuff, but being married to Kate would do that to anyone.

  16. Walt Jr says:

Doesn’t he have a degree? What did he do before the show? Will companies not hire him?

  17. QQ says:

LOL all i got from this is that his hairplugs are REALLY thinning out

  18. MissMoody says:

In regards to the interview, Radar was the one that basically “outed” his employment status at the restaurant. I read the article a few days ago and apparently when Jon was approached, he claimed to just be volunteering. I suppose that could explain his defensiveness.

    • Lady D says:

I remember the Radar headlines, Jon Gosselin Hits Rock Bottom. Now working as a waiter. I thought wow, way to slam the millions of waitresses/waiters in the country. I wonder if all these workers realize they are at rock bottom.
At least Jon has a job that doesn’t involve money off his kid’s backs unlike the shrieking shrew of the east.

  19. Lisa says:

Meh. At least he’s doing it quietly. Kate tries to claw her way into people’s lives every few months, not realizing the interest has worn off with all but a few dozen stay at home moms with wifi.

  20. Jazz says:

He’s still not as bad as Kate!

  21. themummy says:

I was Team Kate for a long, long time just after their divorce, but now I think she is vile and disgusting. I have to give him respect for doing what he is doing. He’s not perfect, had a whole lot of douchy to get out of his system, but now he is living a quiet and small life. People should leave him alone about it. Bashing someone for waiting tables IS disgusting…especially given how much in the US we bitch about people not being willing to work and whatnot. It’s legitimate work that isn’t easy. Good for him. Team Jon (well, not really, but if I had to pick a team…).

    • Lady D says:

I think it was her camping trip with Sarah Palin and family where Kate wanted to leave and said anyone who stayed was no longer a Gosselin? It might have been a different episode, but saying that to her incredibly crushed and disappointed children was where I decided I was no longer team Kate.

  22. Holden says:

Didn’t he do something in IT before? Can’t he just go back to that?

  23. HB says:

Nothing wrong with being a wait person, however when you’ve got that many children it better not be your only job. There IS something wrong with stealing your ex’s computer and poison penning books about them and then pretending you can’t get a better job to get your support lowered.
