Chris Evans suddenly loves Marvel: ‘It’s a cool corporation. It’s got the Midas touch.’

Chris Evans

Here are some pictures of Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, and Sam Jackson at some shopping mall event in Beijing for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This was a press conference in a shopping mall. No wonder Chris had to pair his sunglasses with his new beard. The crowd must have been overbearing. He’s a massive contrast to Sam Jackson’s “take no sh-t” presence. Sam is the coolest.

The last time we talked about Chris (beyond superficially rating him at premieres), he was complaining about how his heart wasn’t into Marvel superhero films. Then he sort of clarified (but not really) by saying, “I gotta watch what I say.

Now that Cap 2 is almost here, Chris is laying the remorse on thick. He sat down with the Guardian, which describes Chris as “happy to be a cog in the machine.” For real.

The journo tells Chris he’s affable: “Good. That’s the goal. You want to strike that happy medium: the balance of being able to find creative satisfaction in your profession, be able to afford a roof over your head but still have the freedom to live a relatively normal life.”

His notorious neuroses: “There was big apprehension on my part whether or not to do the movie. It was a six-picture deal and the problem is, if one of these pictures is a big success and it changes your life, you may not cope with it as well as you expected. There certainly was some fear involved initially. But then you just think, ‘If that’s what I’m scared of, maybe that’s exactly what I should do’, and, in retrospect, God, I’d be kicking myself if I hadn’t done it.”

On Avengers vs. Superman/Batman: “Obviously, it’s an easy parallel to draw. It’s not that I’m glad to see a movie not succeed. I’m just honoured when ours do.”

On working for Marvel: “Oh, it’s a cool corporation,” he says, eagerly. “It’s got the Midas touch. It would be one thing if they were kicking out crap but they’re just consistently making good movies that are consistent successes. And they’re people who really care about movies. I saw this great documentary about indie movies and they made this analogy to restaurants. You want to eat at a restaurant where the people who own it really enjoy good food, where they’re not just doing it for the money. You don’t want to go to the [US restaurant chain] Olive Garden where the model is low cost/high income. Marvel, even though they’re these massive movies that should just be a money-making machine pumping out product, at their heart they’re comic-book fans.”

On working with the ensemble vs a Cap movie: “It’s so nice,” he says, sighing almost wistfully. “I love getting to be in The Avengers. You just breathe a little bit. It’s not all about you. It’s so nice to have other people bearing the burden of responsibility. Anyone who knows me knows I’m perfectly happy with less is more. Whatever you want me to do. I’m happy to be here. I’m not trying to steal the show. I tend to shy away from — I don’t want to say the spotlight — how about responsibility? It’s just very daunting. These movies are very intimidating. Captain America. This is the stuff I struggle with.”

Why has HE starred in so many comic-book roles? “There just happens to be a big influx of comic-book movies, but the truth is, it’s much like making a movie based on a book. There’s great stories, there’s developed characters, there’s structured arcs, there’s a built-in audience. It makes sense that a studio would want to make films out of those pieces of work. It just worked out coincidentally that I was in a string of them.”

Will superhero fatigue hit? “Possibly. But I would also say that a lot of people who see superhero movies for the first time don’t have much prior knowledge of the characters. So in a lot of ways, if a superhero movie is done well, it’s not just about the fact that they have powers. There’s a human element there as well. There’s a connection to the character. You liked the first Iron Man movie not just because Tony Stark flies around; you like Tony Stark. You might as well ask me whether there’s going to be movie fatigue.”

[From Guardian]

I’m almost embarrassed for Chris after reading this. The guy is obviously backtracking on what he said about Marvel a few weeks ago. He’s not even acknowledging his PR faux pas. He’s fervently hoping that we’ll forget about it. He’s absolutely petrified. He’s just not into this anymore.

Oh well. I’ve beat up on Chris enough lately. He does seem like a good guy who ended up in a high-pressure career and can’t figure out how to downshift. Now he’s pretending to be okay with it all. I get the feeling that he’s counting the moments until he can take a nice long break from press conferences and feeling like a cog. The thing is … everyone at Marvel is a cog. Chris should feel lucky that he’s one of the higher-paid cogs.

To be fair, he never dissed the franchise. He just said he wasn’t as into superhero films as he once was. And then he clarified that his priorities are shifting to behind the camera.

Superhero movies seems super exhausting in every way so I wouldn’t be surprised if actors interest decline with each one made.

    Also his arms….drool.

    • Liv says:

I disagree. He said that films sometimes end up being crap and he can do nothing about it, that’s why he wants to go behind camera. This implies that he also thinks the Marvel movies are crap. I don’t care if he meant it this way or not, he came across as a whiny ungrateful bitch. Seriously, he can just fulfill his contracts with Marvel and then retire for the rest of his life. I suppose he earned enough money then. I just can’t stand all these whiny celebritys anymore who cry about paps or their creative fulfillment. They sign up for big films and know exactly what to expect. Most of us normal people have a much harder life, work much longer and get much less money for it.

      • LB says:

I thought he was talking about other films he has been in when he talked about them turning into crap and him having no control. He’s definitely been in some stinkers. The comments about Marvel were independent of that comment about crap movies.

Either way, I’m apt to give him the benefit of the doubt because he’s usually so ridiculously honest in his interviews to his own detriment.

      • V4Real says:

I love me some Captain Sexy and he did say most of his films were crap. But, he wasn’t refering to Captain America or anything he has done with Marvel. He did complain about the projects being exhausting, which came off as whinny. The following day he revised his statement by saying how much he appreciated Marvel. Like I once said, I think he reissued that statement because he got a call from the head honchos at Marvel. He was trying to cover his ass. After he issued his statement about learning how to keep his mouth shut, he should have left it at that. Now it seems as if he is trying to go out of his way to show people he loves Marvel. He doesn’t want to bite the proverbial hand that feeds him by putting his proverbial foot in his mouth. He knows he can be replaced. It has happened in the comics when The Winter Soldier became Captain America.

Chris has been known to criticise some of his past films and I’m sure the execs at Marvel are aware of his tendecy to do such. They don’t want people to think that Chris is including their franchises in that criticism.

That being said “Flame On” and yes F4 was two of the movies that he thought were crap. “Loosers” was quite good and what The ATeam remake should have been.

    • PrairieGirl says:

I’m with LB on this one. When he talked about his films being crap, wasn’t he referring to movies like The Losers: loads of promise, poor execution? And not Captain America, First Avenger which he gushed about in all those early interviews?

In other news, LOOK AT THOSE GUNS!!

  2. Jenna says:

Oddly enough, that beard makes me feel things. Oh, Captain Sexy… **le UNF**

  3. Tiffany27 says:

His beard is working for me. Come back to Boston Chris. 😉

    • Lilacflowers says:

Yes, Chris, please come home. Fulfill yourself by doing some volunteer work with some local school theater groups, since you seem to enjoy that sort of thing, and brighten the local scenery, which is so dreary in this interminable winter. And you won’t have to worry about the paps because the out-of-touch gossip columnist at the Herald doesn’t know who you are.

  4. GlimmerBunny says:

I saw Cap 2 at a press screening yesterday and it was freaking amazing!!! Best standalone superhero film since the first Iron Man in my opinion. I highly recommend everyone to go see it.

    • Tiffany27 says:

It’s getting really good reviews. I’m so excited!

      • Gine says:

Yeah, I’m pretty surprised by how glowing the reviews have been. I wasn’t really all that interested in seeing it, but I think I will now.

    • Hiddles forever says:

It has Johansson in it, so they won’t get our ticket.

  5. Secret Squirrel says:

Chris – “I hate superhero movies”
*checks mailbox and finds nice fat cheque from Marvel*
Chris – “I love superhero movies”

    • V4Real says:

      My version:

Chris – “I hate superhero movies”
*checks mailbox and finds a nice recasting letter from Marvel, with a pic of Sebastian Stan as Cap*
Chris – “I love superhero movies”

      • Mom2two says:

Yup, this is spot on. I think he has been reminded that there are many actors out there who would kill to be in his position.

      • lucy2 says:

Yeah Marvel was probably like “um, excuse me, but if you’re unhappy…” and his agents/managers probably wanted to strangle him.

    • Hiddles forever says:

Exactly! Hahaha I couldn’t have said better!

      +1,000!

  6. Gine says:

Eh, I think he just doesn’t have much of a verbal filter and finally realized that he needs to be more careful about what he says. You’d think more celebrities would get this, but it’s something you see a lot with people who are around for awhile without being huge stars, and then get their big break and are getting way more attention and doing way more interviews all of a sudden. They probably don’t get the PR coaching that brand new stars get because they think they can handle it. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt until he starts showing up to premieres and interviews looking all sullen about it.

I don’t suppose there’s any way they’d let him keep the beard in Avengers 2, but man, I wish they would.

  7. aquarius64 says:

CE knows he bit the hand that feeds him and he’s backtracking. And why is he wearing sunglasses when it’s not sunny outside? When the celebs do that they look like they had a bender the night before.

ScarJo – the pregnancy pouch is not obvious; but you know Marvel is going to get her in that catsuit as soon as possible.

SLJ – he OWNS the Kangool (the hat he wears).

  8. Tiffany says:

Sam Jackson is the coolest MoFo on the planet. That is all.

  9. Tig says:

Agreed- he is working overtime to extract foot from mouth. I think what ends up
happening to these guys is buyer’s remorse- I mean, he looks amazing, but imagine the level of maintenance it takes to keep that up-and for years? Saw an interview with K Branaugh, who, when directing Thor said that when he asked Chris H how he felt about going shirtless in a certain scene, said that Chris H said “you think I survived on chix strips for 8 mths to stay covered up??” or something similar. Maybe that’s why Scar Jo got pregnant- worry free eating!

    • Dutch says:

I wonder if Evans isn’t suffering a bit of sequelitis at this moment. Like the rest of them he’s rolled straight from Cap 1 filming and promotional duties to Avengers to Cap 2 and back to Avengers 2. That would be enough to make most people a little frazzled and as high strung as Evans is about being a “movie star” I’m actually surprised he’s taking as well as he is.

  10. Elise says:

I think I’ve read somewhere that he suffers from anxiety. As a person who deals with anxiety daily, I’m more sympathetic towards him and his “word vomit.” His career as a Marvel superhero is catapulting and he’s trying to adjust to it. I’d cut him so slack.

    • Aysla says:

Yeah, I have a soft spot for him because I’m the exact same way. I am an incredibly anxious person, and when I’m nervous or feeling anxious I do the same “word vomit”. I say a bunch of stupid, inconsistent stuff, then regret and fret it over in private later.

  11. Algernon says:

I think he means both things. He finds being in these big franchise films exhausting, but he’s also aware of the positive effect it’s had on his career and is grateful for that. While I think he’s entitled to feel wrung out by the process of making and marketing a movie like Captain America, no one wants to hear a celebrity complain. So now he’s cut off the complaining part. Sebastian Stan has made some comments about his non-Marvel career and I think he handled it a lot better. He laughed and rolled his eyes and was like, “Yeah it’s not even worth talking about. I’m grateful for this, this is good.” That’s the right tone. We know when an actor has made a bunch of crappy movies, they don’t need to bang on about it. Just an eye roll and/or a wink to acknowledge the joke we’re all in on, and then move on.

I do wish Chris would stop acting like Captain America 3 maybe-but-probably-not-really opening against Batmans vs. Superman is a death sentence. Every time it comes up he looks like someone took a dump on his lawn. I’m sure he’s not thrilled at the prospect but he doesn’t need to act like he’s waving the white flag already. Especially because someone who’s been in Hollywood nearly half his life should realize it isn’t going to happen. Just say that, Chris. It’s not really going to happen.

  12. Jana says:

I don’t think he was ever putting Marvel down with his comments, but rather he wasn’t as clear about what he means like he is here. I guess that’s just me though.

  13. JLo says:

I categorize his remarks as the harmless oversharing of someone uncomfortable with the attention that comes with being a Marvel hero and fan-girl obsession. He’s the anti-Hiddles.

That being said, I don’t love him for his mind…do you see where I’m going with this?

  14. shay says:

i wouldn’t call this backtracking, since he never said “his heart wasn’t in it anymore” nor did he diss superhero movies. if you read the glamour uk interview, which the quote supposedly originated, you’ll see that he merely said that he might take a break after his marvel contract was done, implying that he wanted to focus on directing. he’s always talked about how grateful he is to marvel for opening up opportunities.

as for dissing his movies, yeah not cool. but i never thought he was dissing the cap or avengers movies. he always talked about how proud he is of them. sebastian stan same the same thing during a recent press conference.
