Miley Cyrus’ mom, Tish, gave Miley a new puppy already: too soon?

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus covers the May issue of Elle. That’s a warning. She’s wearing Marc Jacobs to kick off the “women in music” issue. I look forward to dissecting the crazy things Miley says when the interview arrives.

Miley is surely still reeling from the loss of her beloved dog, Floyd, who passed away last week from unknown causes. Miley is a huge dog person (she lost a different dog in 2012), but Floyd was her favorite. Miley chose to dedicate a portion of her Brooklyn concert to Floyd on Saturday night. She serenaded a huge Floyd replica while sobbing onstage. You can see photos of that act here. Miley told her audience, “That was the hardest song of the night to do. As y’all know, because I lost my Floydie this week…Sometimes I just can’t stop from breaking down crying.” The Floyd replica had slightly creepy glowing eyes, but I can’t hate on the act. We all grieve differently.

Miley also revealed on Saturday that her mom, Tish, surprised her with a new dog named Moonie. Miley tweeted, “my mama knew my heart was broken & this morning I woke up to Moonie kisses. So torn. I love having little Moonie cuddle w me and Mary Jane but just don’t know if I’m ready to love again.” Here’s a picture of Moonie:

Miley Cyrus

Mary Jane is another one of Miley’s pups, and now she has Moonie to “replace” Floyd. Miley loves dogs and would never turn one down, but this seems a little bit … soon? I shouldn’t judge, really. I vowed to wait a full year after my Lab died before getting another dog but only made it a little over two months. The itch started, and then my daughter and I went “just to look” at shelter dogs. You can guess how that worked out, right?

I think Tish overstepped here. Waiting only two days before getting a new dog seems a little extreme, but that’s not Miley’s fault. Tish should have let Miley decide to get another dog in her own time. Nothing can rush the healing process. You can choose to open your heart to another pet, but nothing will “replace” the old one. Ever.

Oh a Replacement Bandaid puppy to make up for the dog she wasnt even home to mind…but puppies are portable for a while, yep, got it

    • JudyK says:

Cute pup, too soon. Dogs are not disposable and require a lot of work, love, attention, and expense. Even though Miley is rich, it doesn’t mean she’s responsible.

How did her other dog die?

      • bowers says:

I’ve been wondering too. I read it was on tour with her, and I read it wasn’t.

      • Tapioca says:

I read that it was killed by a coyote – which is how Jessica Simpson and the Osbournes lost dogs too.

        Secure fences people!

      • Stef Leppard says:

I know from experience that you can think your fence is secure, but a predator like a coyote can still manage to sneak in. It’s sad.

      • Liv says:

Is it that common that Coyotes get in your backyard? And if Coyotes can, do paps are able to get on her property as well?

      • Sadie says:

I believe one of the other dogs killed it, if I’m not mistaken.

      • Stef Leppard says:

        @Liv
A coyote is much smaller than a human, so no, just because a coyote could break into her yard doesn’t mean a pap could.

      • Tiffany :) says:

Sadie, she had another dog that died last year, and that one was killed by another one of her dogs. Floyd was killed by a coyote.

I think two days is waaaay too soon, but at the same time, if someone gives it to you it would be hard to turn down. I do worry about her animals when she is on tour, but hopefully they get love and attention from her family/staff while she is away.

    • Emilia says:

I dont think she is a good dog owner.. all the dogs she have passed away so young..

      • QQ says:

Neither do I but as long as she stays rich, they are gonna keep handing her dogs, much like they have given all manner of animals to Paris Hilton to neglect

      • Abbott says:

This is the second dog of Miley’s to die a preventable death. The first was killed by one of her other dogs.

Think Tish automatically giving Miley a new pup to soothe her is pretty telling. Anytime Miley is upset Tish shoves something in her face to pacify her rather than deal with life.

      • FLORC says:

        QQ
To Hiltons credit she does not neglect care from her former pets of the month.
They are either placed with families or go to live in that doggy mansion with a 24 hour staff and lots of room to run.

      • Samtha says:

@FLORC, didn’t one of Paris’ dogs die after being left in a closet without food or water? And one of her housekeepers publicly called her out for how her pets are treated, so…no credit there from me.

      • Belle Epoch says:

Abbott I like your comment. Something very wrong here! Miley doesn’t even want the dog (plus she’s never home). This is a key to how Miley turned out the way she did – don’t have feelings, don’t slow down, money will solve any problem, let’s buy you a solution ASAP. The mother is a moron.

Will the other dogs eat this little one?

      • KB says:

I heard the same thing Samtha. It was locked in some closet and wasn’t found until it had passed. I’ve always heard Paris Hilton is/was a terrible pet owner.

      • homegrrrl says:

Right, buy another puppy mill “pure bred” and let it die a painful death. Awesome human beings, really exemplary.

      • FLORC says:

        Samtha
I didn’t know that! That’s horribly sad. I imagine her closets are the size of my house and to innocently close a door in a big house without knowing a little dog was maybe napping in there is tragic.
I hate how pets are less for companionship and more for a fashion statement among the wealthy. Choupette at least is well loved and cared for.

I guess my point is Miley adopts way too many dogs to give them the fair amount of love they each need. Paris at least built a retirement home for them.

    • QQ says:

in Reply to Florc I was coming to say the same thing Samtha said; It is pretty known that One of Hilton Dog’s died under basic ass neglect and that none of her menagerie of animals have any kind of rules of control or schedule as far as bathroom times etc so these were puppies that would go in closets, any time any place type of deal, surely a bunch were later rehomed when she got tired of them but imagine also that kind of upheaval to any animal

      • Moore says:

        Do you have a link?

      • FLORC says:

        QQ
Already replied above, but to you. I had no clue that happened. Just sad pets aren’t loved and cared for once they grow out of their cute puppy phase.
Paris may have swapped out pups, but Miley just adopts a new one.
        They’re both terrible.

    • Haters gonna hate.

  2. Lindy79 says:

    I want that dog!

I don’t want to be harsh on her, as it’s heartbreaking losing a pet but…this is the second one that has died in dodgy circumstances.
    *side-eye*

    • Amelia says:

I tend to agree. I’m a lifelong animal lover and empathise with her mourning, but two dogs in two years at such a young age is . . . concerning. I don’t doubt that she loves her dogs, but that doesn’t necessarily make her an ideal owner. There’s more to owning pets than cuddles and kisses.

      • mimif says:

How did the last one die? Sorry, too lazy to Google.

      • kcaia says:

I read somewhere that Moonie is her mother’s dog, but I don’t know if that’s true. Also I heard her dog was mauled by a mountain lion or something in California it’s pretty common even when your dogs in your backyard… there’s a lot of predators.

      • Kiddo says:

@mimif, I don’t think that was revealed, which makes it seem more suspicious.

      • Lindy79 says:

“I don’t doubt that she loves her dogs, but that doesn’t necessarily make her an ideal owner. There’s more to owning pets than cuddles and kisses. ”

Yep, yep, yep. This is the problem with so many people. They get pets thinking all that’s involved is cuddles and love, which are important but you have to factor in family/work circumstances, breed suitability, cost, space to name a few.

I’ve read stories from rescues where people have put their dogs into the pound when they go away on holiday as they wont pay for kennels. Humans as a species can be utter knobends sometimes.

      • FLORC says:

Didn’t one of her dogs kill the other?

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

FLORC, I think so. She found a new home for the dog that killed her other one.

    • Mia4S says:

Considering where she lives if be willing to bet in the cause: coyotes. Which is incredibly concerning as she should have the money to take precautions.

Mommy got her a new dog to keep her meal ticket happy and working, let’s be honest.

      • mimif says:

I just googled it and *allegedly* the first dog was mauled by another one of her dogs and you’re correct Mia4S, Floyd was killed by a coyote. Time to put the tongue away and step the f-ck up, Miley. Totally irresponsible and (obviously) unnecessary.

      • Amelia says:

Considering the terrible circumstances the poor little yorkie died under last year, I think it’s remarkably irresponsible to introduce another small dog to the pack so soon after a death.
I’m vaguely aware she gave away the dog that did the mauling last year, but when something like that happens I think it’s pretty indicative you’ve got too many animals and a very dodgy power imbalance/hierarchy within the pack. A similar thing happened with the Queen’s corgis a few years ago, and it’s depressingly common.
As much as you might want as many animals and dogs as possible, it takes restraint to avoid collecting so many that a pack forms. With the possible exception of working collies, it nearly always leads to trouble.

      • Kaylen says:

I lost my dog to a coyote in CA two years ago. I was staying at a home that had fences up, wooden and tall enough that I couldn’t touch the peaks. I literally left my dog alone for as long as it took me to make a sandwich. He followed me down into the kitchen, and I cracked the door open to let him go use the bathroom. I figured it was a good opportunity, I was just grabbing a snack right there. Incredibly, incredibly traumatising event. Feel for her if that was the case with her dog.

      • Moore says:

You can make sure you have a good gate. But how else can you prevent a coyote attack they are wild animals that live in the area. Maybe her dog got out and the coyote attacked there.
It doesn’t seem right to blame her. She should have a good gate. She should check to make sure it is good. But a coyote can get through a very small hole. It is easy for a person to miss. Alot of good pet owners have not seen a small hole in or under their fence.

      • Lauraq says:

Remember when Jessica Simpson’s dog was killed by a coyote? It was extra sad because Jess only saw the dog being carried away and refused to give up hope for a while that she had survived.
The Osbourne family lost at least a cat and a dog to coyotes as well. I remember specifically that a coyote tried to carry another dog away but Ozzy fought it off, bless his heart.

    • TG says:

I agree this spoiled brat has killed 2 dogs on less than 2 years. She is not a responsible dog owner.

  3. blue marie says:

That is a really cute puppy, but why get her one when she’s not even home to take care of it? Why have pets if someone else always has to look after them? I dunno.. Floyd was a beautiful dog.

  4. eliza says:

It’s one thing to love animals. It is an entirely other thing to love AND care for them. Just because someone is insanely wealthy and has good intentions does not necessarily make them a good or competent pet owner.

I disagree with getting another pet at the moment, especially while on tour.

That Elle cover is really bad. Am I the only one who is really tired of Miley everywhere for the last several months? It’s quite enough.

    • Amelia says:

“It’s one thing to love animals. It is an entirely other thing to love AND care for them.”
Every potential animal owner should be made to understand this before they acquire a pet, of any sort.

  5. MrsBPitt says:

I know everyone is different, but I truly believe you need some time to mourn a beloved pet…I’ve been very blessed that each one of my “babies” lived to ripe old ages, I would swear up and down that I would wait at least a year before I got a new doggie…and then, a few months later, we would just go “look” and BAM…The dog I have now, actually walked right into our garage while my son was fixing his car…she had no tags, and no micro chip…we put signs up…no one ever called…this was just a few months after our beloved golden retriever passed at age 12…we always say he sent her to us, cause he knew our hearts were broken. I think Miley’s mom, while I’m sure she just wanted to make Miley feel better, should have waited…sometimes, I think the right dog finds you, not the other way around…

    • Erinn says:

I have mixed feelings. In a way, I like to have the option of another pup or cat to distract me. But at the same time, it wouldn’t be anywhere near as quickly as Tish did things. It’d be weeks AT LEAST before I was up to looking into getting a new dog. I think that’s why I like having a couple of pets at once – when one gets old and passes, you have another animal to take care of and kind of mourn with.

We had to call the vet and poison control last week because our 9 month of pup pulled a jacket off of the hanger, and got nasal decongestant out of my fiances pocket. Most terrifying time I’ve ever had with a pet. Thankfully, the bottle was nearly empty, and most of it ended up being absorbed by her crate pad. But just the IDEA of losing Juno was completely heart wrenching.

      • MrsBPitt says:

We’ve had multiple pets at one time also, and really does help in the healing process…when we had to put our german shepard down, our retriever mourned as much a we did…

    • KB says:

I’ve lost two goldens to cancer…such a great breed, but so sad when you lose them. We lost the last one to hemangiosarcoma (we put him down when it became obvious he wasn’t going to get better), we just felt like we’d never have another dog as great as him again. We adopted a shelter cat four months later, and after 18 awesome months with her, we found out she had a rare and aggressive cancer. We lost her four weeks later.

It’s rough losing pets, but I just can’t live without them. All the happiness they bring makes the enormous grief worth it. We just adopted a year old shelter cat that had been abandoned as a kitten with its mother and siblings on the side of the road in a cardboard box. He’s spent his entire life in a cage, so it’ll take a while for him to come around. I’m just happy to have another furry thing running around the house again.

  6. serena says:

I agree with you Bedhead, it’s alright to get a new pup as soon as you want but.. that’s too soon! And Miley should have been the one to get it, when she was ready, not her mom.. 2 days later! I feel for Miley, I really do, but she’ll get better.

  7. Lis says:

Yes. Slightly. I don’t think we are dealing with high IQs here though.

  8. Adrien says:

I hope that pup came from a shelter.

  9. G. says:

Way too soon. Especially considering she has no time to take care of her pets.

    • my .02 says:

Highly doubtful. It’s a cute puppy and Tish got it the same day she went looking for it. I’d bet money that dog is a product of a puppy mill sold at one of those stores in LA catering to people impulse buying cute pocket puppies. *sigh*

  10. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I know some people feel getting a new dog right away is a comfort, and I don’t judge that, although I could never do so. But please, when someone tells you they just lost their beloved pet, DON’T say, “oh are you going to get another one?” I couldn’t believe how many people said that to me when we lost our dog and I wanted to slap each and every one. I didn’t want another one, as if they’re interchangeable inanimate objects. I lost my purse, better get another one.

    • blue marie says:

Ah, I feel you on that, people can be insensitive. It’s been 4 years and I haven’t wanted another dog. My mom has 2, so when I need a doggy fix I go play with hers.

    • KB says:

Four months after I lost my last dog we adopted a cat. Our neighbors came over (they’re cat owners) and the guy was telling me how much better cats were. I had to walk out of the room it upset me so much. I ended up falling in love with the cat, of course, but it took time for me to really accept her. Losing her was just as hard, which I hadn’t anticipated.

  11. Naomi says:

I never like her magazine covers. She looks as if she is trying to pose how she thinks a model should pose rather than owning her own persona. She also reminds me of some kind of tinkerbelle missing her wings.

  12. Samtha says:

It’s definitely too soon. Just to echo what everyone else has said–she’s on tour right now. She can’t possibly care for and properly train a puppy.

  13. Dominque says:

The big Floyd blow-up was apart of the show before he died.

  14. shellybean says:

Way too soon. I’m sure her mom was coming from the right place, but still way too soon.

  15. TreadStyle says:

My first thought was why does she need a replacement dog when she has other dogs already? Normally people do that when they only has the one pet to begin with or has 2 pets that were super close and they are trying to help the other pet from mourning as well. But when you already have multiple pets? They can’t help her w that? She can’t “lean on” the pets she already has under her care? I mean surely she could spend some extra time with them instead of adding yet another to divert her attention/get left behind while she travels. Irresponsible mother and daughter.

    • KB says:

I also wonder if her other dogs are ready to accept a new dog. Let them adjust before you throw another one into the mix.

    • Aisha says:

Yeah it is weird, she said he was her favourite so…? Are the other dogs just props or something? I don’t get it.

  16. jwoolman says:

    She looks good fully clothed.

Miley herself sounds as though she wishes mom had held off. But it is possible to bond with another animal while mourning the loss of another. Kind of weird, there’s this overlay of grief and missing the lost one while also becoming friends with the new one. It does help if you have a fellow mourner of the same species. There’s no pressure, until the survivor gets thoroughly bored of you and obviously needs a companion of his or her own species. Then you have to find someone right for your buddy. At least that’s been my experience with cats. I generally find a kitten for the current feline resident to raise, works out well for both. The kitten gets a mom or dad to teach it how to be a cat, and the adult gets something to watch more interesting than me.

Miley has plenty of dogs, it’s baffling that her mother thought she needed a puppy. The other dogs would have taken care of her fine, they reassign roles and territories in such situations. Miley would have been the legacy to be accepted by others in the pack.

If coyotes and other predators are a risk in her area, she needs to essentially make a huge caged area so the dogs can safely enjoy the outdoors without intruders (including flying predators if needed). I’m sure she could afford to make it very large and coyote-proof. It also would minimize the chances of a dog getting loose and becoming prey that way. If the dog did get loose, somebody hired wasn’t doing their job. I would put trackers on all their collars so they could be found quickly in such a situation. I have one on Junior Cat (Loc8tor tag) and it has really helped find her in the yard (black cat on a dark night) or in the past when she’s found security holes in our catproof fencing and gone wandering. You can even get systems that will alert you if the tagged animal (or kid) goes past a pre-set distance.

    • Kimbob says:

jwoolman, you’re exactly right! Hell, if I can protect my babies in a known coyote-infested area and I’m unemployed right now, surely Miley can.

I know dogs are sometimes extremely hard to contain. Depending upon the breed, some are just born wanderers, but I read all what you stated, and again, you’re right on the money. I don’t doubt that Miley “loves” her dogs, but IMHO, the care and protection of her pets is not a high priority.

Miley has enough money to have a ZOO built in her backyard if she were so inclined…and here we are reading about another death of one of her dogs. Senseless.

  17. aceshigh says:

Sad about the dog. But wow that is one ugly cover.

  18. Sandy says:

I feel sorry for Miley, since I lost a dog recently. Some dogs become your best friend, and the grief you feel when they die is horrible. I doubt that just buying another puppy (instant gratification) is going to make her feel better. However, with the life she leads, she should consider whether she can really give another dog a good home. It’s not just feeding them and giving them a roof over their head. They need love, attention and a routine to make them feel secure. She certainly can’t give a dog the right attention at this point in her life.

  19. BooBooLaRue says:

Am feeling shades of Mercy the cat here. . .

  20. Vl says:

    Wow. Much opinion. Such emotion.

The first dog was killed by Liam’s bulldog, which was rehomed. Had a more popular public person done the same it would most likely have been credited as the humane and responsible thing to do.

This one was according to gossip sites killed by coyotes, which happens to quite a few dogs here in Cali as there is simply no such thing as a coyote proof fence within the limitations of fencing restrictions in residential areas.

As for if or when it is appropriate to obtain a new dog, to each their own. There also seem to be some confusion about the amount of dogs in her household, keep in mind that not all the dogs pictured with her are actually living together, some reside with her parents and grandparents. And Amelia’s parallel to the Queen’s corgis is invalid since those dogs are notorious for their lack of socialization and training.

To the puppy mill commenters: All dogs obtained by Miss Cyrus have been adopted from shelters. It seems unlikely this one would be any different.

Good to see that your opinions on Miss Cyrus personality doesn’t cloud your judgment.

  21. Kimbob says:

This truly upsets me to no end! W/all her $$$, & one of her dogs gets killed by a coyote….this is so senseless & preventable. Lookit, I have 9 cats, just moved into a coyote-infested area where there’ve been known cat & dog kills by such. When I moved here, I had a separate house built that has electricity, heat & is fully enclosed by a fence that has CONCRETE all around it to prevent coyotes, dogs, or whatever else from trying to dig to gain entry to my cats.

I lost my job right after purchasing my new house, but my Mom & Step-Dad helped me get this separate house w/a cat door & fencing so my cats could enjoy indoors & outdoors. My Mom & Step-Dad live just right down the street from my new house, so they knew about the coyotes. My Mom has the same set-up for her cats (the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree…LOL).

My point is that I have little to no $$$ right now, & somehow I can still manage to protect my babies…..what is Miley’s excuse? Again, w/all her $$$, this was so preventable….no excuse whatsoever. My cats are truly my children, & I give them the very best care I can. Many times I go w/out, so my cats can live better. It seems to me the Cyrus family views their pets as chattel….easily replaceable items or property. It sickens me, & unfortunately is a view shared by more pet owners than I care to think about.

Miley spares no expense for whatever she wants, fancies herself to be a fashion icon, & can’t even provide her dogs w/BASIC care. She’s had one dog death because one of her other dogs killed it, & now a death by coyote. This is a travesty, & I’ll save my sympathy for the dogs she lost, not Miley & her hillbilly family.

  22. Fan says:

She has too many dogs. A busy person should try to avoid having too many of these because dogs are needy unlike cats. She has already broken off with Liam. She should move on. By doing some sentimental antics are not going to help.

  23. Fan says:

By the way, I like her song. I think I listened to “Joline” over and over again.

  24. Mrs.Krabapple says:

Yes, too soon. Dogs are not toys. Also, why does the MOTHER buy the new dog? Don’t people want to pick out their OWN dog, one that they have a connection to, being able to observe the dog’s behavior, etc.? Next thing, people will just order a dog on-line. Because they’re just commodities, right?

The Cyrus family are not people who “love” dogs, they use them as things.

  25. Anon says:

Although I would not recommend buying a new pup so soon after losing another, I can’t really judge. 5 days after my Great Dane passed away, I was in the pet store near my home buying food for my remaining dog. Even though I tried to avoid the puppies at the back, I couldn’t help it and ended up seeing a puppy who had been there for 6 weeks who was underweight, and really scared.
Took her home and do not regret the decision at all. 2 years later and I can’t imagine not having her, so I am glad I jumped the gun.

Sometimes it all works out in the end. đŸ™‚

  26. Isadora says:

Personally, I think the whole concept of pets is rather questionable. But I realize that this is a very extreme point of view.

So yes, way too soon. And I hate that the rich & famous more often than not get some cute pedigree dog and not some poor mongrel from an animal shelter. I guess the mongrels don’t look that cute and fluffy on the myriad of instagram pics that will follow.

    • Ange says:

My thoroughly spoiled and content shelter cat would find opposition to being a pet questionable.

      • Isadora says:

My own spoiled cats like it just fine as well. But when you think about it, it IS a strange concept to take an animal of another species than oneself and shut it into your home for cuddles. And while that might seem kinky but comparatively harmless (on the other hand: the pets have not really a choice but more or less some kind of Stockholm syndrome) the real problem comes with the utter uncontrolability that comes with this whole pet thing. There aren’t any statistical numbers for this, but I don’t even want to know how many “pets” are killed by their owners every year through neglect, horrible conditions, sadistic toddlers, “accidents” etc. And that’s the madness behind this concept for me: you can just buy a living creature and do with it what you want with no control whatsoever.

  27. She's stupid says:

She is Cruella DeVille. She wears furs and collects puppies. Disgusting thing.

    • Isadora says:

That’s an incredible absurdity for me: dog owners that wear fur. Because really, most fur nowadays IS dog (esp. small fur trimmings on jackets or pompons on bonnets). Raccoon dog, raised and slaughtered under the most abominable conditions one can (or cannot) imagine.

  28. People irk me... says:

That poor beautiful dog. My heart breaks. We have three cats and two dogs, and I am about to loose it because I realized my rescue cat is 14 years old. I don’t know what I would do without my spooky. We also have a rescued savannah cat, Bengal cat, Pomeranian and Pitt bull. We paid out the butt for them, but they are rescues. We love them all so much and take time to make them feel welcomed and loved. My savannah rescue cat was caged for almost her whole first year and it took about 2 months for her to even come out in the house. Now she is my constant shadow. I usually call her my dog. Same thing with our Bengal but they are amazing cats for our kids. They tolerate them well lol. Our Pomeranian is our five year old daughters dog and she is so amazing with the kids. Very patient and loving. Our Pitt bull was brutally beaten and had his ears hacked off and I am happy to say he now has the love he deserves. I love my rescued babies. I don’t know what I would do without them.
