Kate Hudson: ‘I do want to make comedies that aren’t dumbed down’

Kate Hudson

These are photos of Kate Hudson at the NYC premiere of Wish I Was Here, which is Zach Braff’s Kickstarter-funded dramedy. You can see the trailer here. The film does feature Jim Parsons, which is always a plus. This is definitely a Zach Braff production with plenty of dreamy music, hazy lighting, and inspirational sayings floating through the trailer. There’s a pink wig reminiscient of manic pixie dream girl greatness. Never mind that the man who coined the MPDG apologized a few days ago for his creation.

Kate is working her post-baby body at this premiere. I don’t usually enjoy scrutinizing women’s figures post birth (or at all), but Kate has already opened the topic for discussion. She’s co-founder of the Fabletics clothing company and works out six hours a day (versus dieting). Kate wants us to talk about her body, and no wonder! Her bod looks fantastic. This Michael Kors resort gown isn’t amazing, but we can see Kate’s midriff shining through. Eye on the prize. Here are some new excerpts from a Parade interview:

The scene where her character talks with a dying family member: “That was an intense day. You can’t help but think about that moment in your real life. You never want to look back and [feel you missed] that connection.”

She’s doing more indie films: “Yeah, the bigger films haven’t really spoken to me. But people like to see me in comedies, which I love, and I do want to make more comedies [for women] that aren’t dumbed down.”

Her musical children “It might be in our DNA. Bing [age 3] has been musical since he was born. And Ryder [her 10-year-old with ex-husband Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes] always finds the new bands; he goes, ‘Mom, check this out!’ and the next thing you know it’s a No. 1 hit. For me, it’s a passion; when you love to sing, it doesn’t matter what you sound like–it just makes you feel good! It’s the universal language, isn’t it?”

[From Parade]

Kate has been focusing on indie movies for the past year. She already made her money in studio romcoms, and now she wants to prove herself as an actress. Remember when Kate was nominated for an Oscar after Almost Famous? She wants to achieve that greatness again, and I can’t blame her. But she cannot disown My Best Friend’s Girl, Fool’s Gold, and Bride Wars.

I’m including some photos of Ashley Greene and Joey King. Ashley is wearing a dull Alexander McQueen dress with no pizazz. Joey looks amazing in a retro-inspired Moods of Norway dress. She’s only 14, but her dress is both age appropriate and very glamorous.

I always have mix feelings about her.. Don’t know if the story about her trying to get her bf away from his bandmates is true..But overall I think I like her.
I like her in Rom com’s. It’s like that is her ideal environment. I loved her in ‘how to lose a guy in 10 days’ but ‘fool’s gold’was atrocious.
Maybe she wants to be more like her mother..Have more significant work also considering the fact she’s in her mid thirties and she can’t play the young girl falling in love over and over again. And watching Matthew McConaughey getting an Oscar might have been her wake up call.

‘how to lose a guy in 10 days’ was hilarious! I remember watching this with my hipster then-boyfriend and we was ‘I’m so suprised, but I liked this film’

      • bella says:

i could watch how to lose a guy in 10 days over and over.
she was enchanting in that movie, and matthew was convincing and hilarious.
        A very sweet story…
since, i can’t STAND him…despise him…he went from one of my fave to the bottom of the pack…
maybe because he became so full of himself???
kate looks so very different lately, doesn’t she?
        she was more goofy looking…
i hate to pick on looks, but her neck/chin were one piece…odd looking.
she’s got a softer, more sculptured chin now.
her face is lovely now and i wouldn’t have said that a few years ago.

      • JudyK says:

Agree that her face is different, Bella. First thing I noticed. She has a great body, but I’ve always found her kinda plain. Pretty here though.

Goldie is a great dramatic actress. I’ve watched DECEIVED, the movie she was in w/ John Heard, at least three times–one of the best thrillers ever.

      • Kori says:

I love Deceived! Very underrated. When she tries to get the necklace (evidence) back but the neighborhood kid has it. The parents are being all New Agey, touchy-feely parenting and the kid is being bratty and she finally just walks over and snatches it. ‘For Chrissake, Isn’t somebody in charge here?’. LOL But besides Private Benjamin, Foul Play (a comedy mystery) is my favorite Goldie Hawn movie. I freaking love it.

  2. Panache says:

Has anyone seen/heard Mark Kermode’s review of Bride Wars? It’s one of the funniest reviews ever! “It’s a hideous existential drama that makes you lose the will to live. No, it’s not. It’s a movie that’s not funny.” 😀

  3. Amelia says:

Either she’s been smoking the special stuff, or someone did a really crappy job of her eye make-up in the top picture.

  4. MindlessContemplations says:

@PAOLA– Just because you are in your mid thirties doesn’t mean you can’t fall in love. Ask all the thirty-something divorcees out there. I think it would be a more mature falling in love and possibly blended families involved.

Either way I like Kate I think she is quirky and fun.

    • Mia4S says:

You absolutely can fall in love in your thirties, hell some people may be doing it truly for the first time….but…At that age hopefully you are not the useless, insipid twit that a lot of romantic comedies seem to be about. 🙂

    • paola says:

In my defense I did say ‘young girl falling in love over and over again’

    • may234 says:

I actually think falling in love in your mid 30s makes more sense: you know yourself and what you want. When you are in your 20s it’s just trial and error over and over and over again.

  5. MrsBPitt says:

Dear Kate Hudson…Please go away, your movies all suck…
    signed: the movie paying public…

  6. AG-UK says:

She seems fun but I can’t see those kinds of films anymore but in my opinion she won’t ever win an Oscar she just isn’t that good. I think she tried to be serious in that film with the other awful Jessica alba and Casey Affleck (the Killer Inside Me)

    • Dora says:

I disagree. She was beyond amazing in Almost Famous. I think she could do that again in the right role.

      • Roger says:

Dora, sue me, but I’m thinking more and more “almost Famous” is mostly a Kate Hudson-esque persona on film.

Yes, maybe she was great in Almost Famous -I don’t think so, but that’s another story-, but it’s only ONE performance in 12 years of career!!! At this moment Kate Hudson can be a perfect “one-tricky-pony”

  7. Mia4S says:

“bigger films haven’t really spoken to me. ”

Wow that has double meaning if I’ve ever heard it! I don’t think “bigger films” are desperate to get Kate Hudson on the phone shall we say.

  8. eliza says:

Lol. It must be “Celebrity Women Who Annoy Me” day on here today.

  9. GeeMoney says:

I’m not sure anyone cares to see her on screen anymore, since she’s made some of the most god awful films ever in the last decade or so. Bride Wars? You, Me and Dupree? Something Borrowed (loved the book, hated the movie)? WTF.

She’s still very beautiful, however. But you couldn’t pay me to see a film that she stars in.

    • mystified says:

I don’t think that she has the same staying power as her mom. Goldie is one of a kind. Kate looks and acts like just about any other 30ish blonde in Hollywood.

      • miriam says:

Goldie was amazing. I love so many of her films. Hudson just peaked to soon with Almost Famous (in which she is great) and then flopped hard after.

  10. Kiddo says:

I would be willing to give her another shot. She was REALLY good in Almost Famous, there was so much promise and potential, and then it was all squandered.

    • Bridget says:

I’m just chalking that one to everything coming together perfectly for that movie. Perfect part, perfect director (after all, the movie was his life) perfect co-stars. She was good, but all she really had to do was be the perfect hippy dippy girl. Act dreamy. Act sad. Be really into music. We now know it didn’t end up being a huge stretch.

I feel similarly about Tom Cruise and Jerry Maguire, too. Its not a coincidence that Cameron Crowe’s 2 most successful movies had that magic combination of actor and part.

  11. Ag says:

her make-up is very kardashian-like here.

    • Kiddo says:

It’s my own pet peeve, but I don’t care for very strong deep dark lipstick on thin lips. It has the potential to create the joker effect.

      • BooBooLaRue says:

with you on this, I have thin lips and avoid dark lippy like the plague!

      • kri says:

Yep.Can’t wear dark matte on my lips. Too tiny-I wish I was blessed with so much self-delusion as KH-“big films haven’t spoken to me’…no, they haven’t. cause you kinda suck.

  12. Talie says:

I’ve come to believe that she was so great in Almost Famous because she was that girl in real life. Bohemian, not burdened by responsibility, flaky…

  13. Jayna says:

I loved her in How to Lose a Man in 10 Days. She is right. A great romantic comedy is something I love, but most are dumbed down these days. When you see one that is good, you appreciate it because they are few and far between. When Harry Met Sally will always be up there as a brilliant one for me.

  14. perplexed says:

Does she still work out 6 hours a day? Not a judging question — just one of significant interest.

  15. nicegirl says:

Love, love, LOVE Darling Joey King!

  16. mia says:

    is this new nose?

  17. CatJ says:

It looks to me like she’s had her eyes “done”.

  18. GIrlyGIrl says:

She seems pretty dopey to me, so maybe any project would be “dumbed-down” by her inclusion

  19. ann h says:

I liked her in “The skeleton key”.

  20. may234 says:

I like her movies. I’m surprised she doesn’t take on more interesting roles because she showed much potential in “Almost Famous” but I like rom coms and hers are usually nice and easy.
