Are Johnny Depp & Amber Heard ‘on the verge of a split’ already?

Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp’s fallen off the radar lately after breaking his wrist in Australia while on location for Pirates 5. He wasn’t even filming when the early March accident happened. He was go-carting during a weekend break. Then Johnny flew home for surgery. The last thing I heard was on 3/28 when The Independent said producers were worried. They tried to tiptoe around Jack Sparrow for weeks, but now filming has halted completely: “Everyone want to get back to work as soon as possible. The producers are hoping Johnny will get himself together, come back and get going again.

Johnny’s life may be a mess on the personal front too. He and Amber Heard finally married in early February after a huge buildup and a chupacabra attack. The newlyweds briefly honeymooned at Johnny’s private island. A week later, Amber flew to London to start work on The Danish Girl, and Johnny escaped to franchiseland. They haven’t seen each other in over a month. It’s like they got married during a rare spot of free time and went their separate ways. I never expected the marriage to last forever, but I didn’t expect rumors of trouble to begin right away. This week’s issue of InTouch says things are really bad:

Just 62 days after they made it official at a small civil ceremony in LA — In Touch has exclusively learned Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are on the verge of a split.

“They’re barely talking,” a source close to the couple exclusively shares with In Touch, adding that Johnny’s love of drinking, and broken promises that he’s going to stop, has put their marriage in jeopardy.

“Amber is constantly worried about him,” says the source. “He’ll go days without calling or texting her.”

According to the source, Amber, who is currently in London gearing up to film The Danish Girl, has made several frantic calls to the set of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales looking for Johnny. “He parties and it’s caused huge fights with Amber. It’s been hard for them.”

[From InTouch Weekly]

This story sounds suspiciously like one of Lainey’s blind items. As a rule, taking blind items as absolute truth is dangerous. There’s a reason why they’re blind items in the first place. But this one sounded so dead-on about Johnny and Amber, and the puzzle pieces fit so perfectly with this IT story. You’ve got the actor devastated over his latest failure, the sketchy best friend who may have warned against marriage, and a history of turmoil. The ignored phone calls and texts are similar in both accounts as well.

I’m not surprised at this tabloid story, which sounds plausible. Johnny’s a complete mess, and Amber’s probably still on edge as a result. Johnny was so happy and eager to get married, but the glow could already be over before it really began.

Here’s Amber putting on a huge smile at a London Temperly event on 2/20.

    Shocker!

    • Heather says:

      HA – exactly!

    • Bob Loblaw says:

The marriage seemed like a desperate effort to salvage the relationship in the first place. A bad idea for both of them, more pressure on the shaky relationship, but I don’t buy the “she’s concerned”, “he’s a drunk” narrative. She knew what she was marrying.

  2. Luca76 says:

Ugh. The decline of Johnny Depp from a forever dong to pathetic sleaze over the last few years is just so sad.
I think his biggest mistake was losing Vanessa she anchored him and kept him in line.

    • lucy2 says:

I agree, he used to be one of my favorites – chose unique movies, lived a quiet life outside Hollywood, let his kids have privacy – and now he’s just kind of a mess. I hope he gets it together.

    • Dorothy#1 says:

I agree!! My 15 year old self cries over what he’s become. 🙁

    • ell says:

vanessa is much happier now though, so i wouldn’t say it’s a mistake.

    • Imo says:

Apparently the relationship failed so it makes me crazy when people say Vanessa made him better or helped him keep it together etc etc. first of all why should anyone be the sacrificial lamb to anyone else’s success or sobriety? Secondly since we are not privy to the inner workings of that relationship how do we know that Vanessa didn’t provide Depp with excuses to drink more? I say excuses because Depp’s sobriety is entirely up to him but how do we know Vanessa was loving and supporting?

      • someone says:

        I totally agree!!

      • Ashley says:

Well for one, he wasn’t drunk in public when he was with Vanessa. He seemed to have himself together. His film choices were much better during that time as well.

      • FLORC says:

        Ashley
Yes he was. There was more discreet partying and coverage during that time though except at the end when Depp almost went out of his way to attract the wrong attention or just not care anymore.

        Imo
Agree. This falls on Depp 100%.

    • Hmmm says:

I think he always was a pathetic sleaze, just when he was young he could get away with it. He was friends with very dubious people like Hunter S Thompson, he ran the infamous drug den the Viper Room. People tend to forget things like that.

      • Carla says:

He was friends with Faye Dunway and Elizabeth Taylor too so how does it make him a ‘pathetic sleaze’ to be friends with someone who’s supposedly dubious like HST? And no, he’s a sweet man who is always very nice and generous to everyone who works with/meets him. Just because he likes to drink it doesn’t mean that he’s a ‘pathetic sleaze’

      • Kitten says:

I like Johnny but his fans do tend to have a selective memory about his past–or maybe they’re just too young to remember.

He was a mess in his younger days-trashing hotel rooms, and snorting cocaine with River Phoenix the night he OD’d.

      • Luca76 says:

I remember a lot of that stuff especially the Viper Room and hotel trashing. I just think in the time he was with VP he seemed to settle down , clean up , and set different priorities for himself which resulted in dividends for his career.
Obviously Vanessa is better off without him.

      • Hmmm says:

He moved to France right after his former business partner from the Viper Room, Anthony Fox disappeared. Fox was suing Depp, accusing him of fraud. Fox is still missing to this day.

      • StumpyCorgi says:

The dubious Hunter S. Thompson? Are you kidding me? Have you ever read any of his work? He was a brilliant writer and an extremely interesting man. He suffered from mental illness and certainly wasn’t perfect, but to call him “dubious” is ignorant.

      • Bob Loblaw says:

Drinking, partying, doing drugs, these are not moral failings, a person can still be nice and good and drink too much and do drugs. It’s childish to character assassinate and dismiss people because they are not perfect.

  3. cannibell says:

Surely a baby will solve this problem.

  4. Abbott says:

She may be insufferable at times, but Lainey’s blinds are usually spot on.

    • Luca76 says:

Yup but that’s also partially because she is willing to schill for publicists by talking up certain celebs and even creating faux buzz for bad movies she’s so transparent about it too.

      • Abbott says:

Very true. She definitely shilled Swift last fall for a few weeks and is up Rihanna’s bum these days. And that JLo movie…

      • Jegede says:

        @Luca76
        Exactly.

And its interesting to me how she almost never has ‘blinds’ on her faves.

      • vanna says:

@jegede I agree with the transparant shilling, but she doesn’t exclude her favourites from blinds: goopy was in the one about the two wives, jon hamm used to be a fav before the pig blind, also scarJo etc…

      • ell says:

she had blinds about goop, and she’s one of her faves. but yeah, agreed with everything else.

      • Em' says:

She had a blind about Amy Poehler and Will Arnett’ split too

    • PunkyMomma says:

I agree. And they’re fairly specific.

    • littlestar says:

Agreed. I can’t think of a single Lainey blind that wasn’t true in the end.

  5. danielle says:

I’m not sure I buy that Amber is the crazy one in this relationship. If she’s actually in love with him and not using him for status, as I had always assumed, then I feel sorry for her.

    • SilkyP says:

@ danielle I think Amber is with Johnny Depp both because she loves him AND because she is a very ambitious woman. Either way, there is an enormous lot at stake for her. I would be curious to see what, in the end, she will value most. The privilige and career opportunities which being with a man like Johnny Depp bring her (even though it comes at the high cost of having to deal with a dysfunctional relationship)? OR her personal freedom and integrity?

    • Pip says:

Yeah I don’t really get the wording of the blind… like she’s crazy because she’s upset that her husband never contacts her and she has no idea where he is? I mean that seems pretty reasonable to me. That being said I always felt like maybe she fell in love with the idea of Johnny Depp rather than the actual man and now she doesn’t really know what to do when the reality falls distinctly short.

  6. dr mantis toboggan says:

I just assumed Johnny was in rehab

  7. Kaye says:

That last picture of her with the big smile – her mouth looks overjoyed but her eyes are saying, “how much longer do I have to do this?”

    • Mari says:

That was my exact thought. She has dead eyes.

      • elle says:

I’m cracking up that that’s referred to as a “huge smile” – it doesn’t look anything like a smile. It looks like an extremely posed open mouth. No hint of “smile.”

    • Question everything says:

My impression, too. Big smile acting. Sad eyes.

  8. Alice says:

This is exactly why Vanessa left him, with not keeping his promises to his kids thrown in for good measure.

  9. SilkyP says:

For those who are acquainted with what goes on in relationships between addicts (and I think by now we can safely assume that Johnny D. is an alcoholic) and their partners, what’s happening now is not surprising. Johnny kicked the habit for a while when his relationship with Amber was new (2012-2013), the buzz of a new love will help you do that. But of course finding a new love is never the right reason to stop drinking. You have to do that for yourself.

So inevitably he started drinking again, and his new fiancee tried to keep him under control (as Vanessa did before), which is impossible, you cannot control an addict. When things became unbearable last year, his partner probably tried to walk away. This caused Johnny to promise to clean up (again, for the wrong reasons, just to keep his partner). A very romantic periode followed, probably filled with presents and promises, and even a wedding. But the real problem wasn’t addressed… and so it all fell apart again (Until the next reconciliation? And then the next bust?)

    • capepopsie says:

@SilkyP. Very well said. I´m sure your analysis of the situation is
correct! I feel sorry for his Children, Vanessa and Amber. For him too, really because he is losing it completely!

    • Crumpet says:

I think this is spot on. The photo of them walking together where she is looking intently at him and he is sort of shrinking into himself, says it all.

    • Bob Loblaw says:

Maybe, but it’s a convenient and pat narrative, I imagine the truth is more complex and nuanced.

  10. cr says:

Or IT could have used Lainey’s BI as a basis of a made up article on JD and AH. I don’t think AH and JD are going to last, but I don’t trust Lainey or IT either.

  11. MrsBPitt says:

I’m surprised it lasted this long!

  12. lisa2 says:

Here’s a thought.. maybe a man’s problems are his own. Maybe it is possible that Amber is not responsible for Johnny’s “decline”. Maybe it is Johnny himself.. you know being a grownass man and all.

Why women are blamed for men not living up to expectations is beyond me.

    • SilkyP says:

@lisa2 Agree, though I think that it is very hard to see where a problem starts and where it ends in a relationship where one or both partners struggle with addiction.

And while I don’t think a woman should be blamed for her partner’s decline, it equally irritates me to see women being put upon a pedestal because they supposedly ‘saved a man’, or ‘straightened him out’

    • Merritt says:

@lisa2 Absolutely agree. I’m tired of women being blamed for men having issues.

    • ell says:

it’s misogynist, I agree. everything depp does, he’s doing it by himself and to himself and has little to do with his women. it makes me laugh when some go on about his decline since he’s with amber, lol. it started waaaay before then, and that’s also partly bc he’s not particularly talented to begin with.

      • Carla says:

Lol what? Not particularly talented to begin with? Is that why he’s been relevant in the business for over 30 years? Is that why he’s won 59 awards and got nominated for 3 Oscars? You do know that they are not talking about his talent when they say his “decline” right?

    • hunter says:

I haven’t gotten the impression anyone is blaming Amber for Johnny’s spiraling demise.

      • Kitten says:

“I haven’t gotten the impression anyone is blaming Amber for Johnny’s spiraling demise.”

I didn’t get that impression either. But I do believe that an unhealthy relationship dynamic can be the catalyst/potentially exacerbate an addiction.

The problem is that whatever issues an addict has in a relationship when they relapse, and (hopefully) eventually get clean, the problems are still there. They don’t magically go away.

I think Amber loves Johnny, but I’m not sure they’re good for each other.

  13. rudy says:

For what I hear, Amber is constantly calling every day every second.
And of course, Johnny is on a bender.
Always two people in a relationship to keep it together or blow it apart.
Very sad. Too bad for his kid.

    • hunter says:

Which kid? I hardly think his relationship troubles with Amber influence his children, regardless of which one you’re referring to.

  14. potatopie says:

They both have looked miserable from the get-go.

  15. Kerfuffles says:

Yeah, I’m a Lainey fan, and not an Amber Heard fan, but I think it’s kind of wrong to characterize AH as crazy and that’s why JD is off in hiding. Maybe JD’s binge drinking and disappearing is what has made her crazy calling & texting all the time to find out where in the hades he is.

Being in love with an addict can make you crazy. I’ve been there–calling all his friends and his friend’s bars at 4am trying to find out where the hell he is and worried sick he’d been arrested or hurt. His friends may think “oh, his girlfriend is crazy and always calling around looking for him.” But they are not the ones living with that person and dealing with his constant benders, absences, broken promises, and waking up at 4am alone not knowing if he’s 4am.

So…ahem. While I think AH is a famewhore of sorts, I can’t fault her in this situation from what we know if it.

    • Dońt kill me i'm french says:

I don’t understand why Amber was the baddie in Lainey’s blind. She’s worried for Johnny and his behaviour, she was not able to be with him so of course she called him ,looked for him and wanted what he did( since when Marilyn Manson is a good entourage? Why does Lainey think Trent Reznor didn’t hang out with him anymore?)

When he was with Vanessa Paradis,Depp was more stable because his entourage was more stable.

  16. ell says:

here’s the thing, I find it difficult to believe she’s the one after him and not the other way round.

  17. bns says:

An Australian tabloid (Pirates is filming there) said that Johnny injured his hand because he punched a glass window after having a fight on the phone with Amber. He was also drunk at the time, of course.

  18. Me says:

The fact that this article mentions Johnny working on the set of Pirates (where he hasn’t been for over a month since his injury) and Amber preparing to work on “The Danish Girl” (which as far as i know it could be possible that already wrapped up) should show everybody about how much “truth” and “facts” are on this story (they didn’t even check out the hundreds and hundreds of stories about the whole movie staled because he couldn’t return after his surgery?)

    • agree says:

I agree.Tabloids just aren’t reliable when it comes to them.9/10 rumours about them have been proved wrong so why would this be true?

    • Karen says:

Right on the money. Even if this story was previously accurate the time does not fit. I don’t know if the Danish Girl (Amber’s film) has wrapped, but HER part of the film is done (smaller role) and she flew out of London. They’re probably both back in LA.

  19. ROBYNSING says:

I had a successful 20+ year relationship/marriage. Now I find that I am not cut out to answer to another after trying another two relationships. This will not be a popular view, but I can relate to Johnny’s flighty and independent ways. The drinking part of his life has always come and gone. I remember him from his Halloween parties and Barney’s Beanery days. He will get tired of the drinking again and dial it down. I would be comfortable with a guy who didnt answer my calls or texts, because then I would know that I would not have to answer his calls or texts. We meet up when it’s agreeable. I did the ‘tied down’ thing and raised kids…now I have one going to college and one to medical school and I don’t need another person to look after. They still take up a ton of time and energy and I am devoted to them and keeping them on the road to success. The Marilyn Manson thing on the other hand is entirely F’d up

    • Dońt kill me i'm french says:

But here Amber would be worried about his drinking behaviour so of course she wanted to know where he was or with who.

  20. nickim says:

This is the same magazine that said that George Clooney was splitting up in January? laughing.

  21. Gia says:

What about Amber’s dress in the first photo? It has an oil stain on it….They both generally look like slobs. I also really don’t like that permanent pirate look on Johnny Depp.

And I don’t read much of Lainey gossip. She’s too kissy kissy about some celebs, so it grates on my nerves.

I am a fan of Celebitchy because of the frankness of the gossip and the comments are priceless.

    • Susie 1 of 3 says:

Sharp eye, I see it now, but oil stain?

      • Gia says:

Hi Susie 1 of 3, I just guessed that perhaps food fell on her lap beforehand and the stain set and yes, it looked like oil (food stain) to me.
Hopefully the stain was just from earlier in the evening and not a dirty dress she put on from another occasion.

  22. sauvage says:

I finally figured out who Amber Heard reminds me of: She looks like budget Elisabeth Berkley!

Other than that, I got nothin’.

  23. Mary Jane says:

I don’t find her facially attractive, but damn! she has great style (e’en with grease stains on her gown).

  24. Question everything says:

    Poor Amber.
There she thought she had bagged herself a leading Hollywood man and now this …

  25. venus velvet says:

He seems kind of empty without a role to play.

    • Moi says:

That is most likely spot on for most actors/actresses.

There is an innate void that needs to be filled that pretending to be someone else (in character) provides.

As an example, think about Angelina Jolie. Her acting was significantly better prior to her basically becoming emotionally happier in her life. Which is a good thing imo. Just a theory….

    • Bob Loblaw says:

Not to be mean or make sweeping unfair generalizations but a lot of actors and actresses are very needy and seek validation and approval from others, it’s part of what makes them successful at their craft but it is a nightmare to live with in a personal relationship. They are self-involved and self-interested, you support them or you’re nothing to them.

  26. Justaposter says:

I remember reading a blind about a month before they got married. Summed up it said, drinking and/or drugs out of hand, a partner ready to bolt. A promise of rehab, and the partner would stay. Then BAM they finally got married.

I always thought it was them. I have a feeling she stayed, and he totally fell off the wagon hardcore.

    • Sunny says:

I hope Johnny gets help. Whatever is going on he has looked awful and frail lately.

I tend to believe the blinds and that he promised to go to rehab if Amber stayed but looking at him in photos it seems pretty clear that he isn’t in recovery.

  27. Snooks says:

In the escalator photo he looks like a combination between an elderly retiree on the golf course and a cranky old gnome, and she looks like his young caregiver. Check out his outfit if you took away the coat, man-purse and necklaces. Old man on a golf course.

On second thought he looks a grandfather with dementia who got mixed up and put on the grandmother’s necklaces and purse, and the granddaughter’s coat. And Amber looks like the concerned granddaughter.

    • Carla says:

Woah, someone’s exaggerating here. He doesn’t really look that old. He is 51 and not 81. She could not even be his granddaughter. Maybe if he had children by the age of 10 though.

  28. Tracy says:

    He was so beautiful once….sigh.

  29. Cerridwen says:

*In Nelson Muntz voice* HA HA!
