Jaden Smith gets spacey with GQ: ‘me and Willow are scientists’

Jaden Smith

Jaden Smith has a new profile in GQ to promote nothing but Jaden. He doesn’t have any acting projects coming until next year, so I guess he’s just being him. The photo shoot is funky, and you can see it here. I’ve been a fan of Jaden’s antics since he started swerving too hard and rocking a dress at Coachella. He mostly seems harmless unless he’s telling his followers to drop out of school, and that Jaden has returned. He gets spacey in this interview and makes me realize this 17-year-old kid has far too much time on his hands.

All of this madness is down to Will and Jaden’s refusal to open their eyes when it comes to raising their children. They’re so permissive as parents, and I hope it doesn’t eventually backfire. Will honestly believes Jaden is selfless because he refuses to be a slave to money (which is easy to say when you’ve got millions). The Smiths are doing their kids a disservice in the long run, but they don’t see it coming. Now we’re receiving shades of the Jaden who insists aliens exist and says he can control time. This GQ interview is whack. Maybe Jaden’s not like Galileo, but he’s definitely like Banksy. In 10 years, Jaden Smith will disappear! Don’t worry, he’s only going off the grid. Maybe he’ll move into the pyramid he built:

On fame: “It’s fun bro. That’s what a lot of people don’t realize. It’s fun. It’s so much fun. It’s the best thing. People think you’re crazy – I feel like it’s an honor, actually, for people to think I’m crazy. Because they thought Galileo was crazy, too, you know what I’m saying? I don’t think I’m as revolutionary as Galileo, but I don’t think I’m not as revolutionary as Galileo.”

He builds everything: “Like, the clothes I’m wearing right now, done it on my own. I built my own bed, I built my own closet, um, I built two closets, I built four beds, I built, um, one pyramid … One pyramid, yeah. It’s at my parents’ house. Half of a pyramid. The tip is missing, but the whole structural thing is built, and it sits at 12.5 feet tall. I’ll Instagram a picture of it once this comes out, so people know what I’m talking about. Because it’s supposed to be 14 feet tall or 16 feet tall, but the tip of the Giza pyramid is actually cut off. There’s no tip. It’s missing. So I was like, ‘I want to have a missing tip on here, too.’ Because I copied the exact 57.1 degrees that the Giza pyramid is. Obviously I don’t have two miniature pyramids next to it. But I have a little pyramid in my actual room, too. One that’s just like three feet tall.”

Science, man: “Me and Willow are scientists, so everything for us is a scientific test upon humanity. And luckily we’re put in a position where we can affect large groups of human beings at one time … And that’s what I really encourage kids to do, is learn the things that you want to learn, because then not only will school become fun, but it will make your dreams come true. I rarely go to parties. My whole life is just dedicated on learning and breaking like, the craziest records of life, and being like one of the craziest human beings to ever exist. That’s me … I just want to teach people how to be comfortable. Stop being so scared.”

Watch out, world: “I’ll go to college. I want to set up office at MIT just so I can learn and bring in new technologies into the world.”

He’s going off the grid like Banksy: “No one will know where I am in ten years. They’ll see me pop up, but they’ll be like, ‘Where’d you come from?’ No one will know where I’m at. No on will know who I’m with. No one will know what I’m doing. I’ve been planning that since I was like 13 … It’ll be kind of like Banksy. But in a different way. More of a social impact. Helping people. But through art installations … You know what I’m saying? So I’m just dedicating my whole life to helping the world.”

[From GQ]

Jaden has yet to graduate from high school. I think he has another year, and we’ll see a Kylie Jenner-esque cap-and-gown celebration. I’m pretty sure he has no idea what a real scientist does. Will he really go to college, MIT even? I couldn’t tell you, but it’s a good thing this kid has money because he has no sense of reality. Part of me wants to continue thinking he’s awesome and harmless, and none of this behavior and weirdness is his fault. We’ll see if he eventually shows off that pyramid. So much crazy!

  1. …and I’m the Virgin Mary.

  2. aims says:

The only child of Will’s that is “normal ” is his eldest.

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

The one that wasn’t raised by him, yep.

    • Wentworth Miller says:

Tre. I thought the same thing. His mom Sheri or Sharise was on a reality show and there’s no way she would allow him to “just be!”
The Smith kids didn’t turn out the way that I thought they would. I like Willow and Jayden.

  3. Monie says:

    Boy, hush!!

  4. Konspiracytheory says:

As an actual scientist (PhD in Bio), this made me giggle way too much. MIT!?! Kid has millions of dollars and not a single clue.

    • Tash says:

correction: his parents have millions of $ but I see what you’re saying.

      • Lama Bean says:

No he also has millions of dollars from his movie roles. Either way all the money in the world won’t buy this kid a clue.

    • Arpeggi says:

Yeah, as an actual scientist, I find his gibberish bloody ridiculous. Also, one does not simply “set up an office” at the MIT. Go read a book or 20, and leave that poor Galileo alone!

    • Megan says:

I’m with you… I have a PhD in Bioengineering from MIT…. and I just cant. Kid has no idea what it takes.

      • captain says:

It doesn’t matter. The fact that he doesn’t dream of becoming a model or an actor, but wants to go to college deserves warm welcome. Love kids who want to study.
Of course if he wants to learn only what interests him, then good luck in college, lol ))

      • GreenieWeenie says:

It’s kind of the thing right now. Did you see Lindsay Lohan’s considering running for the presidency in 2020?

      • Dee says:

Got some bad news for jaden….MIT does not do legacy admissions. He probably thinks because of his family’s status that he is a shoe in, but no. Probably at yale or harvard( we all know that they love catering to celebrities) but Mit!??!?! No. Sorry jaden.

    • Kiyoshigirl says:

Yes. He’s going to change the world through “art installations” by setting up office at MIT. The kid’s a bit confused.

  5. Allie says:

I do not find his stupidity charming or funny. The fact that he thinks he can just waltz into MIT (maybe he can, ahem George Bush/Harvard), is really just insulting to those kids who actually work hard for what they want. He is not a scientist or a genius. His ignorance wasn’t originally his fault, but he will be an adult soon and he needs to step it up. Being a fame addicted idiot is not cute.

    • GreenieWeenie says:

ehhhh. Harvard has legacy (applicants). MIT does not. There’s a reason for that. Meaning yes, I agree with your point that no, Jaden will not be going to MIT and the fact that he thinks he will is amusing/insulting.

    • Pandy says:

Agree. The kid’s an idiot with a bankroll behind him. Not very funny.

    • LadyL says:

That would Yale. Looking even stupider than the guy you tried to insult.

  6. Erinn says:

Oh I see- he’s confused SCIENTIST with SCIENTOLOGIST.
Rookie mistake, kid. You’ll learn next time though, right?

  7. jwoolman says:

Why do they keep interviewing this kid? It seems abusive. He comes across as several years younger than he really is.

    • captain says:

Exactly. If you interview a very young child, he will be obviously saying some stupid things. Like, who do you want to be when you grow up? – I want to be a bus driver, and then a liitle bit police officer, but a teacher too, and the king.

He is probably younger than his official age, and shouldn’t be giving interviews or posting unsupervised on social media. Truth is that most of his contemporaries have the same mess in their heads, but are more conditioned to pretend. He is just really open, honest and oversharing.

    • littlestar says:

I agree, it’s not cute or funny. This kid is clueless, uneducated, sheltered, and very immature for his age. The media is playing on this to make a dollar at the kid’s expense, and he (and his parents more so) are too egotistical to realize it.

He probably is a smart kid, but I don’t think he’ll have much of a chance. Hopefully he proves me wrong though!

      • yellow says:

Exactly what I thought as I was reading this. Might sound tolerable for some kind of “wacky” pre-teen, but none older. If older, it just sounds WAY delusional. Even for the “avant garde” types.

      • yellow says:

Actually, I should have said “early teen”… like 13 or 14… no more!

    • lisa says:

He is extremely emotionally immature for his age. Contrast him with 17-year-olds in previous generations who were preparing to go off to WWII. He is WAY behind in life. Shame on Will and Jada.

      • jwoolman says:

He seemed more focused pre-puberty. He was never a standout as a kid actor but he was adequate (just an odd choice because there are other kid actors who would have done so much better; he never would have had the roles without his father’s name and influence, he would have been blown away in open auditions). Whatever is wrong might have hit with puberty and has been steadily escalating.

  8. swack says:

“Me and Willow . . . ” First learn some proper grammar and then we’ll talk. Is he even being home schooled? Sounds like another Kanye in the making.

    • antipodean says:

This exactly. He is obviously the best and brightest twinkle fairy in the whole world, we know because he tells us so. However, you can guarantee that, like, when it comes to, you know, spelling, like, and grammar, like, he has not one clue. The legacy of a Scientology education (which of course is an oxymoron).

    • Bucketbot13 says:

Totally. “Me and Willow- we’re scientists” Totally kanyeing into an idiot.

  9. GreenieWeenie says:

This has to be Scientology. There’s so many whiffs of Tom Cruise, the most extreme stunt actor/bungee jumper/marathon runner/whatever else. Plus a dollop of Jon Travolta’s “I can heal people with my hands.”

    • Sea Dragon says:

It’s a direct result of Scientology. Imagination coupled with fool’s gold minus formal education.
At least Tom Cruise has worked his ass off to be a proficient actor and stunt man.

  10. Loopy says:

Did anyboy else read this in an erratic Kanyesque rant?

  11. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Too bad no one has taught him grammar. I get so mad about him. He’s obviously smart, curious, imaginative- but he’s left alone to channel that energy however he wants. I think in the right setting, he would be a wonderful student. What a disservice to him.

    • Crumpet says:

Kids desperately need boundaries, and none have been set for him. I see all this craziness as a plea for his parent’s attention.

    • asami says:

on the contrary, its very obvious he is not smart. he’s the epitome of what alexander pope described in his poem “a little learning” . . . its apparent he has read some things and say things by rote to appear intellectual, profound. all his interviews (and his sister’s) clearly show a lack of cognition, no logic whatsoever. initially. i was one of the many who thought that at best he’s amusing, he seems a nice enough guy, totally harmless . . but at his age, he’s soon to be an adult and have the resources to reach/ influence a lot of younger people . . . so imagine the united states in the near future, with a majority of its young adults, adults who agree with jaden and neglect true learning and education, people without the capacity for critical thinking . . . it is scary

  12. Hannah says:

Hea harmless and rather entertaining. There’s nothing malicious or mean about him. I quite enjoy him.

    • bellenola says:

Me too. Bless his weird a$$.

    • jwoolman says:

Yes, he doesn’t seem at all mean. I’m sure he is well-liked for that reason. But it’s a good thing he’s rich. He’ll be able to float through life sprinkled with fairy dust, and other people will take care of him when his parents are gone.

  13. Velvet Elvis says:

I will take him over a Kardashian any day.

  14. Inconceivable! says:

I hear roaring laughter from MIT after reading this article.

  15. Nev says:

    Amazing. Love it.

    • Neah23 says:

What is Amazing about this very clueless 17 teen year old? With out his parents money and name he couldn’t make.

  16. word says:

    He’s worse than Kanye.

    • Leah says:

No he is not. Jaden didn’t say a bad word. Kanyes rants are usually about how he is better than x,y and z who suck. He attacks other people. Kanye is bitter, Jaden is just weird and free flowing

  17. OrigialTessa says:

wait, is it crazy now to believe in the existence of aliens? I thought that it was pretty well accepted now that the odds of us not being alone in an almost infinite universe are pretty good.

  18. AlmondJoy says:

Ya gotta love this kid. He’s enthusiastic and such a dreamer. He doesn’t know much about the real world, but neither did I at his age and I had a pretty normal upbringing. I like his positivity.

Willow looks very modelesque in that pic!

    • Decorative Item says:

Are you serious? He is woefully uneducated and frighteningly self absorbed. This young man is clueless and foolish and is obviously unable to function in this world without his parents protection/money. There is nothing delightful and charming about him. All I see is a sad, sad waste of potential.

  19. Granger says:

What happened to Willow???? She is SCARY thin in that photo!

    • lyda says:

haven’t you heard 😉 She is now signed up at a model agency. So she’s thin to be a runway model.

  20. Kelly says:

That would be “Willow and I….”

  21. Jay says:

Yeah, no. Nothing about this kid is cute/charming. He sounds like a grade A head-in-the-clouds moron.

  22. Anoneemouse says:

These two are too weird for words.

  23. Jayna says:

Dear God, what have they done to their children? I hear Scientology-speak in there. Put him out in the real world with zero dollars where he has to work and support himself and zero entitlement for a year and then let him come back to all of this empowering other people bull he’s shouting from his ivory tower. There’s a lot of grandiose thoughts coming from him, like he’s so enlightened. It’s very odd and I feel he’s studied Scientology.

    • sauvage says:

I agree. I think this interview confirmed the persistent rumour that the Pinkett-Smith family are indeed closet scientologists.

  24. WinnieCoopersMom says:

I think he is super insecure. Usually the people who boast like that about themselves and their “accomplishments” are. He sits around making pyramids at his house, and then thinks it’s brag-worthy? I feel sorry for the way he was brought up, but he needs to get with the real world and not be so entitled and such a legend in his own mind…His parents have a messed up way of “parenting.” Sad sad. But once you’re an adult, you have to find your own way and can’t blame your childhood or your parents for your view on the world. So..How about shut up, do your thing and disappear like you say instead of just talking about it. And newsflash, one doesn’t “set up office” at MIT or any University for that matter. LOL who has this kid been talking to?

    • jwoolman says:

I wonder if he even knows anybody who has gone to college? Or MIT…. Where in the world did he get the idea that he could just set up an office there? What does he expect to do there? Does he even know what they do? It’s baffling.

I remember being 17 and I was far more coherent than Jaden. Even if we knock off a couple of years because he’s a boy and they often mature more slowly – at 15, I was far more coherent than Jaden…. Okay, at ten I was far more coherent than Jaden. And I was talking about being a scientist since I was seven years old. Didn’t know any, but I read a lot. Went through an astronomer phase, followed by a rocket scientist phase, and settled on nuclear physics by the age of ten. When I actually got beyond high school, though, in real courses and real labs in college and grad school found even more interesting things to do in science…

      • WinnieCoopersMom says:

I think it’s a combination of Adderall (this kid sounds super hyped up on something) and his parents giving him no guidance bc they surely feed him constant BS that he can literally do whatever his little brain dreams up. That’s all fine and good until it’s completely unrealistic, unattainable and downright laughable to all us peasants who actually live on Planet Earth.

  25. thaisajs says:

That kid wouldn’t last 30 seconds at MIT. It’s just sad.

  26. I Choose Me says:

I’ll admit, Jaden has grown on me and I feel for him. This is the problem when kids are told you can do and be anything you want to be. You just have to want it really, really bad.

I like his enthusiasm, his adventurous spirit. He just has way too much time on his hands and not enough focus. Give him some realistic goals. Some goddamn guidance and he’ll be all right.

    • Naddie says:

I’m a bit ashamed to admit that I like the little guy. Maybe because I always imagine these rich kids acting like jerks, getting drunk and banging a different model every day, and that one just comes off as spacey and clueless. Ah oh, he never trash talks anyone.

  27. Abbicci says:

Hey, my cat knocks things off the table, not because he’s a jerk but because he’s studying gravity. Maybe Jaden and my cat should get together for a study session. Or he could studt with Jenny McCarthy and get his Google PHd like she did.

  28. Wren33 says:

I was a kooky kid, so I don’t mock him in any way, but he seems really off in some way. And this quote made me sad:

“No one will know where I am in ten years. They’ll see me pop up, but they’ll be like, ‘Where’d you come from?’ No one will know where I’m at. No on will know who I’m with. No one will know what I’m doing. I’ve been planning that since I was like 13″

That is normal life, and it is weird/revealing that he fantasizes about it.

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Yeah that is a weird plan and maybe it’s me but it smacks of some of the (unhealthy) fantasies I have at times when I’m feeling down in the dumps.

    • qwerty says:

Well, not really. He wants to do that so people will talk about him and wonder where he is. And you know where he will be? On his laptop, googling day and night to check if people are wondering when he’ll “pop up” again.

  29. mirage says:

He is just a kid that doesn’t take himself seriously at all.
He seems to be a lot of fun, and that reflects on how he dresses.
I wouldn’t worry about him. For a rich kid, he seems grounded, original and a free spirit.
As for him saying he want to do MIT, it’s like comparing himself to Galileo. He is just playing with ideas. He knows he is privileged, and he is mature enough to recognise the positive aspects of fame.

    • Decorative Item says:

He obviously has no clue as to how privileged he is. And I have no idea where you managed to see maturity in anything he said in this interview. He is shockingly unaware and it’s terribly sad.

  30. vauvert says:

As a parent, if I heard my son speak in such a disjointed, incoherent and lunatic fashion, I would make an appointment to have a full evaluation made. I am no specialist but either he is on drugs or he has some learning delay / disability. It is not funny and it is not cool.
At his age he should be a lot more articulate, he should have an understanding of the college application and admission process (dropping out of homeschooling is not exactly the kind of background that MIT smiles upon) and he should be able to know the meaning of the word scientist. The fact that he is so infantile scares me. A three year old assumes he will be a scientist because he makes a Lego pyramid. A teenager should know better.

    • WinnieCoopersMom says:

LOL this comment is so spot-on. I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt in regards to thinking he is just hyped up on some meds..he sounds like extremely ADHD..but there has to be more to it than that. I think you are right about something actually being wrong with him. I know quite a few young people with ADHD who are smart and extremely coherent. I think that bc of his lack of schooling (Scientology + wealth + fame = no real schooling), he is just not smart and is trying to overcompensate. It is disturbing. How sad he thinks he could go to MIT. Please, little boy. Just no.

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

You said it all, his accomplishments are so small (and that’s fine, he doesn’t have to be doing off the charts stuff at his age) but it’s the fact that those small accomplishments in his mind are somehow so earth-shattering and will pave the way to an amazing future that’s concerning.

Kid, unless that pyramid is 70 ft tall and you built it by yourself using technology no one in the (real) world is going to be impressed. I’m starting to wonder if he’s not semi-close to a quarter life crisis when it’s not all just handed to him and laid down in his lap. There’s a reason a lot of celeb kids get into modeling and acting, because those are careers where their parents influence matters.

Scientists and technological schools won’t give a good diddly about Will Smith and that spells trouble for Jaden’s future if that’s his real plans.

    • jwoolman says:

I wonder if he does have some type of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder but his parents never had him diagnosed and treated because of Scientology biases. So instead of him being on something, maybe he isn’t on anything (no medication at all) and also has never had help with other types of non-drug ways to cope with such disorders. Maybe we’re seeing the result of absolutely no treatment for such a problem, making him a perpetual five year old whirling around. He seems to be a basically non-aggressive nice kid, so his parents may not think there is anything wrong, that he’s just a free spirit. But there’s a difference between being a free spirit and being unable to function independently.

Willow doesn’t raise the same alarm bells in my head, although I find it disturbing that her father bought her a studio and digital enhancement experts and had her going on tour as a child just because she enjoyed music. I am not blown away by her talent, so I don’t think she’s a prodigy, just well engineered by her father’s hirelings. Now she’s modeling, the refuge of undereducated rich kids. She seems deliberately stunted by her parents also, but I don’t think she has Jaden’s problems. She’ll be able to be an independent adult and may be able to overcome the shortcomings of her upbringing.

  31. jwoolman says:

If I were his parent, I would worry that he wouldn’t be ready for college. It would be great for him, since he will have teachers who will seriously critique his ideas and other students who will do likewise, as well as exposure to more than what he thinks he’s interested in. But he’ll need to go to a place that has remedial programs for people who didn’t have a very good high school education. If he’s used to flitting from one thing to another at his leisure, the pace of college study will be very difficult for him. I think he can read, which is a plus (I had occasional students who were very poor readers). But he might have little real concept of math or science and a good school will require him to take at least introductory courses in those. Tossing out bits of philosophy-babble won’t cut it. He probably doesn’t focus enough to write well, judging from how he talks, but if he pays attention to teachers’ comments on his writing then maybe he will learn. Many people develop their writing skills in college.

It seems so sad – his parents are floating in money but haven’t bothered to give him the kind of education that really will let him pursue any dream he has, now and ten years from now. Mastering basic skills is just as important in intellectual endeavors as it is in playing basketball or playing an instrument. This is why letting youngsters decide their own course of study actually handicaps them, few are able to think that far ahead and realize that you can’t just do what’s already easy for you.

  32. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

This kid doesn’t have much of a future without his Father does he?

He might want to consider modeling like Willow and a small music career because as others have said I think he lacks the knowledge and structure to do well in the field of science and technology.

    • jwoolman says:

I was just thinking that his parents have kept him forever a caterpillar who can’t manage to turn into a butterfly. He wants desperately to fly, but his parents won’t let him grow wings.

  33. unicorn says:

What the hell did I just read?? It sounds like the ramblings of someone under the influence.. good grief….

  34. Bridget says:

These Jaden Smith interviews are starting to feel mean. It’s not like he’s doing anything of note, they’re just interviewing this kid to see if he’ll say something ridiculous. Will and Jada have done such a disservice to their children. This poor kid can’t even seem to put together a coherent thought.

  35. Trashaddict says:

OK, I know some west coasters are going to get very pissed off at me, but isn’t this kid just your average product of California kulture?

  36. jawnyjawn says:

I’m from overbrook, the same west Philly neighborhood that will is from. He is a little older than me but I still used to see him a lot pre Fresh Prince of bel air days and he was really cool. The whole neighborhood was really proud of will up until a lil after independence day, overbrook produces a certain type of person, in a good way, it’s a tough neighborhood yet mostly isn’t ghetto or hood, and he really embodied the ob style

Now it embarrassing that he’s a representative of overbrook due to the person he has become and the way he is raising his kids and the type of people he is allowing his kids to become. That shit would never fly here. It’s okay to make a better life for yourself and move on get out, it’s not okay to forget how much of an impact growing up in ob had on the person you have become and not trying to instill some of the positive aspects in the next generation and instead allowing your kids to become the same type of people in your past who looked down on you for being from overbrook.

(Sidenote – he’s def the first scientologist from ob.)

  37. serena says:

At least he thinks of going to college..
