Rita Ora: ‘I wonder what makes everyone so interested in me’

ElleCanadaRitaOraCover
Rita “American Takeover-er” Ora covers Elle Canada’s February Issue. I love the fashion in the editorial, but it’s 70s/80s influenced so it speaks to me – you can see it here. Rita has a dynamite body and I love her new short spikey do. I mention the hair because in the interview she is waffling about wearing short or long hair to meet someone and I am sure my opinion will matter to her.

Rita is always game to tell you how amazing Rita is, which makes my job much easier. Although Rita is one of the many eye-roll exercises I perform regularly, I don’t have a problem with her hustle. I love to watch a good hustle. Generally, I prefer a good hustle with something worth hustling behind it but Rita has her thing:

Ora worked tirelessly on creating a brand that centres on—you guessed it—connection. “It has always been a dream of mine to create this cult,” she says. “Back in the day, when punk was a lifestyle, people used to gather in underground raves and punk out. I know it’s different now because everything is so much more exposed. But even if it’s only 10 people, it’s my movement.”

When asked how she has changed the most since being signed by Jay Z and releasing that first album, the conversation quickly turns to fame. “I wonder what makes everyone so interested in me,” ponders Ora. “It has made me really think about every move I make; it has made me more self-conscious. I always wanted the attention, but then when I started to get it, it made me second-guess everything.”

Since 2012, Ora’s follow-up album has been imminent, but it was held up for unknown reasons. “I just haven’t been prepared to put it out, and that’s the truth. But I’m happy that I delayed the album because otherwise I don’t think the people who haven’t heard my music would have the right impression of me because that isn’t who I am.”

[From Elle Canada]

To me, forming a cult from scratch is a bit ambitious. Maybe start with a coffee circle, grow into a book club and expand into a happy hour crowd that eventually evolves into your cult; don’t sprint out of the gate. Props to her for owning the fact she wanted the fame; she may overestimate our interest in her but she is never going to pretend she isn’t chasing it like a $20 bill caught in the wind.

As for the mythical album, it has been promised for 3 years. This album will be a reintroduction to Rita and her music. It’s not that the album isn’t finished; she just hasn’t released it yet… *Deep breath* Here’s the thing, it’s okay to have an album delayed or cultivated or germinating alongside your underground Book Club Cult but hyping it as a “reintroduction” is a rocky slope. Rita has released two songs since Ora and although there is some deviation from sugary pop, the pervasive drumbeat is in the background and the up-beat still wins out – she didn’t go dark, just sepia.

Note by Celebitchy: Rita has sued Jay-Z’s Roc Nation record label in an attempt to get out of her contract, which has been in force for seven years. Her lawsuit states that they have lost interest in her due to management changes and that she is footing the bill for her own promotion. You can read more here.

LOL. She set herself up with that one! Im pretty neutral on Rita but I love the cover. I’m sure the comments will be gold. I’m just here to watch!

      Who says anyone is??

      • SnarkySnarkers says:

The only thing I know about her is she dated and cheated on Rob Kardashian. Does she do other things?

      • BossyKat says:

        +1

…when I’ve seen her I always get her mixed up with Lisa Bonet or Nicole Scherzinger. Then when I take a closer look and realize it’s not them, I don’t really care who it is. I couldn’t name or hum a song of hers if you put a gun to my head.

“I wonder what makes everyone so interested in me,” ponders Ora.

NOTHING, bae, to be Honest we aren’t into you like you think we are, If anything there is a lot of perplexed whispers as to “what Is She even Wearing this tim… Nah You know what? It’s Rita Ora” and also as well tons of ” it that Bargain Bin Rihanna? and why did we need her?

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

She must have been having one of those philisophical rhetorical moments because frankly that question is up there with if a tree falls in the woods.

“If no one cares about a singer, but she refuses to go away is she really a singer?”

    • Lizzie McGuire says:

I just knew her as “Low Rent Rihanna 2.0” who Rihanna hated for trying to be her. Also I’ve never heard anything from her except for that awful Iggy song.

    • Sochan says:

I’m thrilled to report that I can’t name a single song this professional hustler has ever done. Not one!

    • Sixer says:

Can I just say that I am REALLY unappreciating you guys all seeing through her? I was hoping that you’d all love her and we this side of the Pond would NEVER SEE OR HEAR FROM HER AGAIN. 😉

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Does she have a career on that side of the pond???

Everyone I’ve spoken to about her grumbles something about a song or two but can’t really name them or why she’s supposadly ‘popular’.

Lol, it’s like she popped out her front door and went, “Yep, just gonna be famous today and pretend everyone’s obsessed with me.”

      • QQ says:

Sixer, You TRIED It trying to foist that on us, CUTE but no cigar

      • Sixer says:

Eternal: She did a stint as a judge on Voice UK, which the Sixlets made me watch. This was quite enough for me thankyouverymuch. But then you realise that the silly cow is everywhere, being famous for, well, being famous.

QQ: don’t knock a trier, right? (Me, not her!)

    • Alex says:

yeaaaaaa that comment was in need of an epic eye roll. I didn’t know ANYONE was interested in you Rita. Cause you sure as hell have been on this “US takeover” for a few years now and *crickets* I know more about the famous dudes you’re banging and you SWFing Rih more than your career

  3. Don't kill me I'm French says:

I only know her via this site .
I never listen one of her songs .In fact I even don’t know what she sang

  4. Reine_Didon says:

Lol ! I cannot name a single song from hers. I wonder why we still see her everyday everywhere. Please go away faded version of Rihanna…

  5. Miss V says:

I honestly still have not one clue of anything she’s ever done. I know I could google it, but I don’t care enough to bother. Sooo, that’s how interested I am in her. I do like her hair in the header photo, though. Trying to be nice.

  6. Squiggisbig says:

But are we that interested in you, Rita?

I’m fairly neutral on Rita. But I do feel like for all her hustle she pretty consistently lets her messy personal life/terrible choice in men interfere with her career and image. Like the thing with Calvin pulling all his music, Kardashian tweets, and her ASAP rocky lyrics.

  7. Miss M says:

    The power of nothingness…

  8. supermoist says:

    Said no one ever.

  9. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

…I’m going to to with God and say one good thing:

The pictures are gorgeous, I like the styling and even her eyebrows. It all works.

Okay, now to go with the devil on my shoulder:

There are some acts in Hollywood who have no personality (or persona) but plenty of music. Say Selena Gomez. Then there’s acts like Rita where I have not heard a damn single song but this woman acts like she’s doing international stadium tours.

HONEY. NO ONE IS INTERESTED. That’s why your career is in constant, “Press Start” mode. Someone please cut this girl a reality check.

  10. Surly Monkey says:

    Me, too. Rita.

    Me, too.

  11. LAK says:

“She is now paying for her own promotion”

Point me to a record company that pays for someone’s promotion and i’ll eat my hat.

She clearly doesn’t know how record labels work.

  12. Rainbow says:

    Everyone??? lol
Who cares about this budget Rihanna?? She’s delusional.

  13. Ayra. says:

It’s no surprise that Roc Nation is doing that, she’s not the first artist that they barely pay attention too, and or don’t bother to promote, eg: J.Cole.

  14. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

We aren’t. Now please see a dr regarding your delusions of grandeur.

  15. Wentworth Miller says:

    I like Rita’s music.

  16. Chelly says:

    Not everyone….cause Im sure not

  17. Sochan says:

This makes me laugh. Christ, what a piece of work.

  18. lucieca says:

Who’s that Everyone she’s talking about? lmao god bless her. i wish i had this kind of confidence

  19. Angel says:

    Who is she? 😬

  20. Courtney Louvre says:

She’s right. There are plenty of celebrities who are papped everyday and who make a lot of appearances, but they mostly go unnoticed. It kind of worked against her though because people noticed her everywhere, but they didn’t know her music at all. I’m glad she’s trying to get released from her label because them marketing her as “the next Rihanna” did her no favors. Her voice is best suited for acoustic type music and I don’t think her label knows how to work with that.

  21. nikzilla says:

Thank you, Rita for my next haircut inspiration.

  22. Littlebowbee says:

I have no idea what her voice sounds like. Why is Rita Ora?

  23. Renee says:

Hilariously delusional but she knows how to work an outfit.

  24. georgia says:

Her voice is good. She just needs better songs. And also, as an eyebrow connoisseur, I love her brows.

  25. Kathryn says:

I’m amazed at how she gets top-tier cover after cover…what the f*ck does she do? I swear I only see her on magazines. Must be another “Weinstein girl.”

  26. jsilly4 says:

Someone above wrote they couldn’t name a song of hers if they had a gun to their head. Off to google her songs just in case that ever happens!!! Seriously though I only know through gossip sites she dated Rob Kardashian. And that’s enough to make me weep for even knowing that!
So if she doesn’t have her new album out yet why is she on the cover of a magazine?

ETA: my google search turned up a new video with Chris Brown. Ugh.

    • word says:

Black widow featuring Iggy Azalea. She also had another song that had some success that was produced by Calvin Harris…I think it was called “Never let you down”. She is very big in the U.K. but never got that big in N.A. We mostly know her for the men she has dated. But in America, that is enough to make you a “celebrity” lol.

  27. tacos and tv says:

Are people that interested? Hmmmm. I think not. She’s a coat tail rider and has an average PR and team pushing that hustle. Sorry sweetie, but the people you hang out with, your celeb friends who you can stand next to in a picture are what makes you appealing… if that.

  28. go girl says:

Is that the face Kylie gave to her plastic surgeon? Because that’s who I thought it was.

I echo a lot of other people: WHO? Her name comes up very occasionally on gossip sites and I always am unsure of who it is when I see a photo. I’ve never heard her music, never seen her in anything.

  29. Jessica says:

I heard her sing with Andrea Bocelli and she sounded amazing. I don’t really understand why she has so many naysayers. If she is able to push through with this level of opposition, then more power to her. She has my admiration.

  30. ell says:

    she is seriously deluded.

it’s a shame because she has a good voice, but in terms of personality she’s like a z-list and her music isn’t really anything special either.

  31. tabasco says:

“Rita Ora: ‘I wonder what makes everyone so interested in me’”

    Too easy. Next.

  32. Kell says:

I don’t even know who she is..

  33. kimbers says:

She kind of reminds me of Kat Graham…always trying to push their music…but without success. At least Kat has VampDiaries

  34. Dani says:

Oh, so she is a singer! I’ve seen her name all over gossip sites and up until this moment I literally had no idea why or who she was. Ok.

  35. Pmnichols says:

I don’t know who she is

  36. na na says:

I think she was in fifty shades of grey… I’m not even sure.. the movie was kinda awful so it was a bit of a blur. But honestly i was surprised by her quote… it doesn’t seem like anyone really is interested in her. i just found out she was a singer like a week ago.

  37. fiona says:

This woman is delusional. No, you don’t have a cult following. That’s your PR and you know it. And nobody is interested in you but yourself. She is so desperate. Nothing about her seems authentic, just another Rihanna rip off.

Decent voice but her whole image is ridiculous. Worst pop star image out there, moreso than miley, perry and swift put together. At least they have an inch of originality. It’s like someone meshed every inch of our current pop culture together, attempting to create something edgy and unique.

It isn’t going to happen. She has ZERO IT factor. Girl doesn’t have it.

  38. NeNe says:

I’ve been wondering the same darn thing!!
