Laura Dern in Thom Browne at the Emmys: a rare miss for her

I didn’t notice nominee Laura Dern at the Emmys so I looked her up at the end of the night and just felt bad for her. Do you remember how Laura Dern killed it during awards season earlier this nightmare year? She was goals. Her fashion was so classic and elegant without being too staid. She took a risk with this custom gray Thom Browne dress and it did not pay off. There’s just too much happening with the lined corset and dress over the silky blouse. Also her hair is goofy like that.

Laura was nominated for Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie, for her work in HBO’s The Tale, which closely mirrored her own MeToo story. That category went to Regina King for Seven Seconds.

Presenter Patricia Arquette did a weird bit with Ben Stiller and Benicio Del Toro where Benicio was being murderous and creepy. It was uncomfortable but was actually better than most of the jokes last night. She was in a black gown with a gold and silver coral-like print. This looked better in motion than it does in still photographs. I would wear this any day.

Laurie Metcalf was in Badgley Mischka. This is too bridal for me but there were a lot of looks like that last night. Laurie was up for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, for Roseanne, but that went to Alex Borstein for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Yea…that looks too much like something that “Mother of the Bride” would wear…and you got it from “David’s Bridal”….a store that I love…FOR WEDDINGS…not so much…for award shows…THOUGH you can get a perfectly LOVELY gown from David’s that would ROCK at an award show…

    Alas…THIS IS NOT THAT!

    Also…whoever did Laura’s hair/makeup/outfit…

They should get a STERNLY written memo entitled…

    “WHAT IN DAHEYLL?!?!?”

Yes Laurie Metcalf does look kinda Mother of the Bride, but the dress fits her so well and she looks fantastic.

Courage awards though to any actress wearing white. Mine would be stained before I walked out the door and getting in and out of the car would take care of the rest.

That’s got to be a wig. An awful wig.

Alex would’ve looked so much better had she worn a bra. That dress was just not good.

OMG Laura dern’s look is all kinds of awful. it’s 1998 all over. her hair her shoes the dress, all awful 1999/1998.

I’m feeling gaslighted by how much folks hate Laura Dern’s dress! I mean, yeah, she took a big risk, but the construction and fit of it is really good, all the EXTRA is turned down by being in the same gray tone, and the charmeuse silk shirt under the corseted tulip dress (and pearls) have a kind of retro 30s lingerie vibe meets on-trend street look that I’m actually digging. In any case, the shirt under dress thing is very much a moment as recent trips to London and NYC indicate to me, and if you’re going to go for that look this seems an interesting, elegant way to pull it off. Maybe if the hair was sleeker you all wouldn’t hate it so much? The hair is pretty amusing. But if 80s newscaster hair is coming back, I think we all might secretly enjoy it! Dig out those little orange purse-size curling irons, ladies!

Is it just me or did Ben Stiller look really good on stage last night?

  8. Parigo says:

Honestly the Thom Browne on Laura Dern could have been killer if it was better fitted and didn’t have that pearl thingy.

I actually love her dress. I read the comments before I saw the pic. Different tastes I guess?
