Drake has increased the security around his LA home, Kanye is his neighbor

Drake celebrates another sold out Aubrey & the Three Migos show at Poppy

Last Thursday, Kanye West started tweeting. And he didn’t stop for more than 24 hours. I’m not going to pretend to have followed the entire thing – I know it mostly involved his simmering beef with Drake, and Kanye’s mental health struggles, and something about Ariana Grande too. Most of his tweets are still up – you can see his feed here, if you’re interested. For years now, I’ve mostly considered Kanye to be his own worst enemy, and when Kanye gets going on one of his rants and tweet-storms, I think he’s only really a danger to himself. But that didn’t stop Drake from adding some extra security:

Drake isn’t taking any chances. A source tells PEOPLE that the 32-year-old Canadian rapper, who lives in the same gated community, Hidden Hills, as Kim Kardashian West and her husband Kanye West, had extra security outside of his home on Friday, amid his ongoing feud with West.

Although West and Drake’s beef is nothing new, the latest drama began on Thursday, when the Ye rapper took aim at Drake, tweeting over 125 times and claiming that the “In My Feelings” rapper threatened his family, targeted people suffering from mental illness and contacted his mother-in-law Kris Jenner behind his back.

Except for a Instagram Story post consisting of several crying-laughing face emojis on Thursday, Drake has yet to address West’s accusations.

[From People]

It’s a little bit crazy that Drake and Kanye both live in the same gated community in Calabasas. We knew that though – that was one of the pieces of evidence for the conspiracy theory that Drake and Kim Kardashian hooked up at some point. As for Drake needing the security… on one hand, I think this story perpetuates the false belief that people with mental health issues are “dangerous.” As I said, I think the biggest danger Kanye poses is to himself. That being said, neither Kanye nor Drake can control what other people do, and Drake is better safe than sorry when it comes to taking his security seriously.

Looks like another way for Drake to play the misunderstood, good guy victim 🙄

    • Lala11_7 says:

I’m sorry…somebody Tweets at me over ONE HUNDRED TIMES…in a day…and then their wife comes at me popping mess….and I live next to them and money ain’t no thang….

Yea…I’m gonna hire extra security…and also contact my realtor….

      That’s just common sense…

      • Erinn says:

        +1000 Lala.

      • HelloSunshine says:

Thank you Lala. Imagine that happening to a non celebrity, you’d be telling that person to do whatever they can to be safe because they’re being fixated on. I don’t think Drake is playing the victim here. Would anyone be surprised to see Ye roll up to Drake’s gate, phone out and recording and trying to get in to talk to him?
My dad is super similar to Kanye. Reading about Kanye’s behavior is like reliving my teenage years at home. I don’t blame Drake for being proactive.

      • HeyThere! says:

100% agree. The excessive messages is threatening. Also I’m kinda shocked if they are neighbors how has he not just walked over yet?? I would have also highered extra security.

      • Beth says:

Absolutely agree @Lala. Better safe than sorry. No matter who the person is, famous or not, mentally ill or not, I would do all I could to keep myself safe if the neighbor tweeted about me all day like Kanye did about Drake

      • otaku fairy says:

True. I could see Kanye popping up just to record and argue/manufacture drama.

      • Steph says:

Kanye was also tweeting about hiring people to take a “hit” on drake. So yeah, I would hire security too.

It’s not like all people with mental health issues are dangerous, but Kanye is making threats which makes him dangerous.

      • Yes Doubtful says:

I agree, Kanye has been obsessed with Drake for months. I can’t blame Drake for taking extra precautions. Imagine if Kanye were acting this way toward Taylor Swift, OP would feel differently I’m sure.

  2. Reggie says:

Can we throw them all away yet ?

  3. Char says:

Kanye has to shut up asap. He keeps perpetuating the prejudice against people with mental issues, people who is out there working, taking their pills and strugglings, instead of praising fascists, denying slavery and stating that pills won’t help.

    • me says:

Didn’t Kanye say his “breakdown” was due to lack of sleep and not a mental illness? Also, Kim said her husband is just “misunderstood” and doesn’t have a mental illness. Now Kanye’s saying he’s off his meds??? What are the meds for then? Kim lies a lot. Kanye can’t keep his lies straight either.

    • Eleri Glass says:

      well said, char.

    • a reader says:

Rantye needs immediate help. During his tweet storm he mentioned he had been off his meds for 6 months, claimed he couldn’t create art while medicated, and claimed god gave him this illness so he could publicly rep for the mentally unwell. He sent an incredibly dangerous message about medication and mental health and his stupid stans ate it right up.

He is legit off his rocker and in the throes of a breakdown. Drake did the right thing by a) not engaging and b) adding security.

And to think Rantye dragged Ariana into this mess… unreal. Yes, she made a silly comment piggybacking off the fact that the Rantye/Drake thing was trending, then Rantye came at her, at which point she tried to disengage and stated that nobody should weaponize mental illness (FACTS right there), at which point Pete jumped in with his suicidal post. I’m glad someone did a wellness check on him, but that was typical BPD attention seeking, manipulative behavior and it had it’s intended effect, Ari ran right over to the SNL studio to check on him. I hope Ari can completely disengage from Pete’s antics and realise she’s not responsible for his mental health. And I hope both Pete and Rantye get the help they clearly need.

      • Dali says:

Your health should be more important than your work. He is rich af he should focus on getting healthy again and his family. He’s a father of three little kids. They should be his priority and not his art/work. Its not like he can’t pay his bills. Your work won’t help you. A friend of mine had similar health issues like kanye, he didn’t take his medicine too and sadly took his life. This is a serious problem and he should focus on that.

      • Caffenatedwench says:

Thank you- it is so so critical and difficult to remember that you aren’t responsible for someone else’s mental health. I was in a relationship with someone with Borderline- he refused meds and was a raging alcoholic. I felt like I needed to take care of him, and his constant manipulation made it almost impossible to leave.
I was always worried about what would happen to him and lost myself- saw him through a rehab stint (started drinking again), a 6-night ICU stay for pancreatitis (started drinking again)… Every time I broke it off I would get constant suicidal texts and calls, sometimes graphic pictures of drunken injuries. It’s incredibly painful to walk away from someone you love, but sometimes it’s the only thing you can do.

    • lucy2 says:

He needs help, and the people in his life need to get him that help.

  4. Girlplease says:

    Kanye is dangerous.

He has a history of violence which isnt just a reflection of his mental health issues.

So Drake is smart to increase security.

  5. JRenee says:

How does one know if this security detail wasn’t previously inside but now outside? When incidents occur, people wonder why celebrities don’t have security, when they have security, they are mocked?
Hos $, if I needed it, I’d pay for it too, gates community, Kanye or otherwise. Non story here..

  6. Veronica S. says:

Honestly, I was going to say it seemed ridiculous, until I thought about how I would feel – particularly as a woman – if a man with Kanye’s means and proximity obsessively harassed me for an entire day in public social media. I’d probably be a little unsettled, too. We shouldn’t use double standards in viewing Drake’s response as somehow cowardly or absurd.

It does perpetrate the myth of mental instability being correlated to violence, but honestly, Kanye himself is not giving BPD a good rap as it is. A lot of people don’t have the knowledge or empathy to separate personal choice from side effects of a disease. I saw that a lot in the Ariana Grande thread where people were criticizing her for claiming mental illness was weaponized – but frankly, she’s right. Kanye absolutely uses his mental illness as a shield to hide him from the repercussions of his actions. He has the money and resources to get help if he wanted to. There’s an element of choice in his refusal to get to a better place.

    • Alissa says:

And then the other half of the time, him and Kim claim that he doesn’t have mental health issues and people are being rude for claiming it’s mental health.

I wish they’d just admit he has mental health issues and get the treatment and medication he needs and can afford. I also wish he’d stop perpetuating the idea that in order to be creative, you can’t be medicated.

      • otaku fairy says:

Right. When it’s convenient for him, he’s a misunderstood brilliant mind promoting freedom of expression. But when his poor behavior is being criticized or lightly joked about, he’s a victim being bullied for his mental health struggles.

    • Amelie says:

“A little unsettled” ?? I’d be VERY unsettled if Kanye tweeted at me 200 times, even if it was about petty stuff. While we’ll never know if Kanye was involved in revealing Drake’s love child to the world, Kanye cares too much about what people think of him. I’m not even sure I really understand why Kanye did that but to have someone on social media harassing you like that–it’s VERY unsettling and I would be filing a police report at least to have it on record. While Kanye has never physically harmed anyone that we know of in his mania, there’s no telling what he could do if left unchecked.

    • a reader says:

Kanye does not have BPD. Pete has BPD. Kanye is bipolar.

  7. MiaIrish says:

Um…I thought this was debunked because someone posted pics outside Drake’s house and there was nothing going on…and Drake is currently in Toronto….?

  8. Ann says:

I’d sue Kanye if I were Drake. Over 100 tweets directed at one person in a day seems like grounds for harassment to me. I’m not on the cancel Kanye train because I still have hope that he’ll come out of all this nonsense at some point but someone needs to shut him down for the time being. Money might be the only way to accomplish this. Kanye may not care about a lawsuit but PMK and Kim probably will.

  9. me says:

It’s just odd Kanye only has “rant storms” when he has something to promote. Hmmmm.

  10. Loca says:

Kanye can only dish it out but can’t take it back this is with anyone. One thing about music I don’t see why any artist bashes another unless there was personal beef it’s just annoying. Plus I highly doubt Travis considers Kanye family. Kanye lives for drama and negativity that’s just him.
