Saoirse Ronan wore a complete disaster of a Gucci gown to the Oscars

It’s been a lowkey thing I’ve been talking about throughout the awards season: the fact that Saoirse Ronan has completely bungled her fashion for the Little Women press tour and awards season. I think all of the Little Women actresses have bungled their style, to be honest, but Saoirse is the worst culprit. Some suggested that Ronan is doing it passive-aggressively against the critics and awards shows because Little Women was “snubbed” for so many awards. It’s possible, but I also think that Ronan might have just lost the plot sartorially. I mean, she’s been CONSISTENTLY bad, even before LW was snubbed for anything.

Ronan’s Oscar dress was Gucci. This is a custom number, correct? Meaning, it was likely made to her specifications. She wanted that stiff peplum sticking out that far. She wanted that skirt which looks like a cheap tapestry. And worst of all, she wanted those awful bangs. This is just a complete disaster.

Salma Hayek also wore Gucci, and before I saw Saoirse’s dress, I thought “why did Gucci give Salma such a basic gown which looks like stuff she’s worn a million times?” But post-Saoirse, it makes sense. They gave Salma the standard “pretty” gown and they gave Saoirse the absolutely bonkers, hideous gown. In comparison, doesn’t Salma look lovely?

Salma looked great and I’m glad Gucci didn’t give her the usual Belle Watling vib they deliver to women with bigger chests.
Saoirse is so pretty and such a talented performer; I hope she’ll get the Oscar soon.

  2. MMC says:

I LOVE her look. The gown, the bangs, everything. She didn’t play it safe and it’s an absolute win.

  3. greenmonster says:

If Saoirse’s dress would have been all black and/or tight, I would have liked it but this light blue or whatever the colour is, is just so ugly. But I can’t get over her awful hair and make-up. Who did that to her and how? How can anyone make Saoirse Ronan look bad?

    • JanetDR says:

She looks old and frumpy! Hair and makeup are much worse than the dress.

    • Enormous Coat says:

It’s a bit too much skirt and the color is a miss for me. But agreed that the bangs are the worst miss.
Does she look like Anne Heche, or is it just me?

    • tealily says:

Yeah, that messy ponytail look is just too messy. I just want to brush her hair! I think that gown with a sleek up do and a smoky eye could have worked. It definitely is a bonkers dress, but the color scheme is interesting and I would have loved to see different styling with it.

  4. Snazzy says:

You don’t see the shows under the gown but they show up in pics when she’s getting out of her car … The horror!

  5. Ravensdaughter says:

Saoirse is so beautiful. Why does she wear so much makeup on the red carpet? (I guess because everyone does…). The dress was pretty out there…

  6. June says:

Saoirse has a dreadful haircut. That wasn’t nice but it’s true, the dress was also a disaster. Salma’s dress is wrong for a large breasted woman. A nice pantsuit would be better for her. Just my opinions. 🤣

  7. Prettykrazee says:

I like Saoirse look. It’s not boring or blah. I love the top half of the dress. The blue skirt not so much.

I definitely prefer it to Salma Gucci. I don’t understand how she has access to some of the best fashion in the world and chooses that horrible gown. I guess she was going for the Grecian Goddess look? But she looks like a 1980’s Jessica McClintock prom dress ad in Sassy.

  8. Lucy2 says:

It’s not the worst dress I’ve ever seen, but overall I don’t like any part of her look. I wonder if she got a new stylist recently and that’s why it’s been so off?
Salma’s is pretty, but I think I would’ve liked it more with a flowing skirt.

  9. Red Weather Tiger says:

The back of Saoirse’s dress is fabulous. The rest is a disaster. I like that she doesn’t seem to GAF what anyone thinks about her style. A latter-day, mainstream success Chloë Sevigny of sorts.

    • paranormalgirl says:

Yes! the back is amazing. But then the front… and it’s all “honey… no.”

And I am finally understanding “bangs trauma.”

    • (TheOG)jan90067 says:

Agreed. From the back, I love it. The front, oh no!

And the bangs??? Glad *she* did it; it reminded me why I shouldn’t cut any! lol. (I’ve been waffling).

  10. Eva says:

My problem with Saoirse’s dress is the level of craftmanship. You look at Brie Larson’s Celine or Mindy Kaling’s D&G dress and you understand why these dresses cost thousands and thousands of dollars. Just impeccable craftmanship and luxurious materials.

Whereas Saoirse’s dress looks like I made it from leftover fabrics in my mom’s garage. But it still probably cost a fortune. Looks bad for Gucci.

  11. Ellie says:

She reminds me of a young Madonna here. Very Borderline years.

  12. Ann says:

Why the periwinkle with black and cream?!!! Why not a black skirt?! Seems like a no brainer. Maybe they ran out of black fabric to match? Seems like 2 different dresses mashed together.

  13. minx says:

    Salma’s dress is a snooze.

  14. ChillyWilly says:

I like Saoirse ‘s dress from the back and I like the bodice and even the light blue skirt, but that ruffled peplum in the front is no good.
    Salma looks gorgeous.

  15. manda says:

No joke, my curtains (which were bought at an old lady’s estate sale) are the exact same color and pattern (so, I guess that means they’re the same material?) as the skirt on Saoirse’s gucci gress. That is hilarious to me

  16. Trillian says:

My daughter recently cut her own bangs in kindergarten. She should do Saoise’s too, because they look a whole sight worse.

  17. Sass says:

Look, I’m just gonna say it.

There’s a new clique in town headed up by Greta and they all dress like hot garbage on purpose. I truly believe that. The uglier it is the cooler you are.

    I hate it.

  18. Malificent says:

Now I know what an upper flermin looks like….

  19. tealily says:

Salma’s dress wasn’t the interesting choice, but I do think she looks lovely. She wasn’t a nominee… I think it’s appropriate and actually looks pretty comfortable.

  20. Dasha says:

Lol please, much more worthy films were snubbed over Little Women. GretaGerwig is painfully overrated & wouldn’t even be this far in the game if she hadn’t hooked up w/Noah Baumbach. She is the best example of filmmaker success w/o doing the work to get there.

There were M A N Y deserving-but-snubbedfilms made by women(ESP WOC!) this year – and Little [White] Women was not one of them.

  21. Elizabeth says:

If I were making a movie about the Greek gods, I’d cast Salma as Aphrodite.

  22. AppleTartin says:

I say this with zero irony, but I had curtains the same as the bottom half of Saoirse’s dress.

  23. Soupie says:

Hate the unnecessary strap on Salma’s dress. Otherwise, I like it.

  24. Nan says:

Nothing but love to Saoirse’s dress. Not playing safe in the least. Great choice.

  25. Minnie says:

I have to agree, Saoirse has been showing some awful looks this awards season that seem at odds with her former style (I still remember how great she looked in that green Calvin Klein in the Oscars 2016, and even last years somewhat boring pink gown was better). She seems to be giving some message but I don’t think it’s about LW being snubbed because even at the premiere last year she had some old lady attire. The bangs don’t bother me that much, but I don’t like her makeup.

  26. Victoria says:

I read that the top of Saoirse’s Oscars dress was a re-design of her BAFTA dress from last weekend!

  27. Gabby says:

Saoirse looks like my bffs and I in 8th grade did her makeup and hair at our slumber party. The dress is pretty from the back, but the front is overwhelmingly hideous.
Salma looks per usual. I don’t like the bun, hate whatever that thing in her hair is, I thought at first she had on a tiara. Her dress would be pretty without that strap.

  28. Veronica says:

I don’t hate it conceptually, but it’s too busy in the front. Had they left the peplum off and just done the ruffle in the back, it would’ve been fine. Shame because that’s a gorgeous periwinkle shade contrasted with the black and cream.

  29. Jessica says:

Salma’s dress kinda looks like my 1990s prom dress from some cheap mall store. It looks cheap.

  30. Valerie says:

I actually kind of liked it? It looks like something you’d pull from the fabrics in an 80s bathroom, but it works.
