Demi Lovato’s massive engagement ring is worth $2-$5 million

DL_Ring_1

As we know by now, Demi Lovato and her boyfriend of four months, Max Elrich, got engaged in a very picturesque beach setting – and by picturesque, I mean perfectly curated, framed and lighted. Max presented Demi with a huge emerald-cut diamond set with proportionally large side diamonds. Thanks to TMZ, we now know that this baby set “Max” back between $2.5M-$5M and that the price tag is supposedly because of the cut:

Now TMZ is reporting that the ring is worth anywhere from $2.5 to $5 million, all because it’s a “special cut” from super fancy celebrity jeweler Peter Marco. Ooo, ahhhh, a Marco original! TMZ’s sources say the rock weighs somewhere between 10-20 carats, and is “an emerald cut that was handset in platinum, and flanked on all sides by smaller (only relatively) trapezoid-shaped diamonds designs.”

Sources say Max wanted the ring’s design to be “unique”, and worked closely with Peter Marco to pair the big elongated stone with the perfect side stones, until it was “just right”. Well, the finished product certainly puts the “extra” in extravagant.

The ring is massive and the clarity on those diamonds is gorgeous. I won’t lie, the minute I saw this I started scouring my fake jewelry sites for a faux-cocktail version. I love dramatic, “that can’t be real” bling. I found a few CZ look-alikes, but they’re $150 and that’s way over my flashy jewelry budget. So, as you can imagine, I would never consider putting a $5M version of this ring on my finger. I have to believe any ring with that price tag just feels heavier. At first, I balked at the idea that Max had anything to do with designing this ring but honestly, I know a lot of men who would come up with a completely standard design (“but make it bigger!”) and call it their own inspired vision.

Demi looks thrilled with it so clearly it’s her style. If this is the ring she wanted then Max got it all right, and that’s a good way to kick off a betrothal. That price, though. Paris Hilton’s 20 carat emerald cut diamond engagement ring cost $2M, so every cent over that is the designer’s ego tax he tacked on. It’s an absurd amount of money, sure but I also think these poor guys got ripped off. I hope it maintains its inflated value if this is an investment piece. As I said, I love the drama of the ring and would love an affordable knockoff in my collection. But tastes change over time and sometimes I wonder if these couples consider that when they go all in for these huge pieces. And I hate to be cynical but something this distinctive will set the paparazzi off if she’s spotted without it. The headlines will be: Demi spotted without her Lake Michigan sized diamond – trouble in paradise? Still, she’s happy so I’m happy for her. Plus, she’ll never have to worry about forgetting her compact, she can just use her diamond to check her teeth for leftover kale!

(ps – Demi was really cute in Eurovision)

Its certainly big, but at a certain point it is too big and pricey for every day wear.

  2. HerkermaHermolker says:

It may be “worth” 5 mil, but that’s not what “he” paid.

    • Kiera says:

Agree. I bet they got it at cost in return for publicity. Think Astrid getting the earrings in Crazy Rich Asians.

    • Flamingo says:

He is a bit part actor with not much on his filmography, so I’d go ahead and say that she bought the ring herself. No shame in that, I say get what you like as far as engagement rings go, but there’s no reason to pass the engagement off as a big surprise.
Also, that price is crazy inflated. Maybe for an antique Harry Winston, Cartier, or VCA with all of its paperwork and original bill of sale from 1955 or if it belonged to Liz Taylor , but any good bench jeweler could plop a giant diamond into that setting. I’d say real price is 400-500k.

  3. OSTONE says:

It’s way too big. When it’s that big it just doesn’t look good anymore in my opinion. Regardless I am glad she is very happy!

    • LadyMTL says:

I agree, it’s way too big. I like the style of it / the cut, but it looks fake because it’s so huge (IMHO.) Never mind that I’d be afraid to wear it for fear of losing it, hahaha.

  4. Justme says:

Did anyone else see the tweets about him being obsessed with Selena? He tweeted he would marry her less than two years ago and he’s “allegedly” still in contact with Selena fansites.
Also super sketch that he dedicated the same song to his ex-fiancee that he dedicated to Demi.

I know little about this guy, but everything I have read so far screams run away, Demi.

    • Angel says:

He also had tons of tweets about Demi. About how he wanted to marry her. Funny people forget about that. Anyway super happy for her, she deserve happiness after everything she’s been through.

  5. manda says:

My ring was only a few thousand and I have incredible anxiety about losing it. But, I am a person who takes rings off. I also lose earrings!

  6. Lori says:

I like 1stdibs for bling gazing. I could stare at engagement rings for hours. No idea why.
That site does give a pretty good estimate of value and so often these celebrity rings seems to have very inflated prices. Kinda curious where this “Max” came up with 2-5 million for the ring.

    • Lula says:

I got my wedding ring from 1st dibs. I wanted that ring, rather than the engagement ring, to be the special one. It was from the 20s and has two snakes and I love it so much. I love vintage jewelry.

  7. Lisa says:

I like the ring but he obviously did not pay for it.

  8. Girl_ninja says:

She bought her own ring then right? He’s a young soap opera actor and can’t imagine that he has that cash for a ring.

  9. Willa says:

Anybody else see, House horror movie hand? The red nail polish???

  10. Chelly says:

It’s so gaudy. Idk…I like practical but then again I dont have millions to blow on jewlery. Maybe my taste would be different if I did but somehow, for my engagement ring, I would think I’d want something I could actually wear.

  11. taylor says:

Wasn’t Kim K’s massive ring the item of interest when she was robbed at gunpoint? Never mind that it’s ugly and entirely too expensive (Demi does well, but I didn’t think this well), it’d be a danger to wear on a daily basis.

  12. Joanna says:

That ring is absolutely stunning! I would imagine she will wear a smaller one for day to day wear and save the expensive one for big events.

  13. Mrs. Peel says:

It only works if you’re wearing a crazy beautiful caftan and turban like Elizabeth Taylor.

    • ChillyWilly says:

I would say it only works if you actually are Liz Taylor and Demi definitely ain’t Liz.

  14. Case says:

    It’s a hideous, gaudy ring.

    • Jules says:

Yes, so show-offy and trying to convince us of something.

      • Hello Kitty says:

        could not agree more.

i have a nearly perfect round 2.2 solitaire (waited ten years for proposal while hubby finished residency so it had better have been good) and it sometimes feels a little too much. cannot imagine her monstrosity on my hand.

  15. Anna says:

I have sausage fingers as well and I make sure to stay away from long nails: it makes my hand look like a middle age chubby lady hand.. but I see her point. On the very rare occasions I wear a ring I always go with huge ones: it make my haNd look like it’s normal and overpowered by the ring not the other way around. With dainty small rings I look like my hand it’s even fatter and shorter. Still I don’t like the version she/they chose.

  16. angie says:

She absolutely paid for it, no way he could afford it. It’s so big and tacky…

  17. MVJ says:

OMG, big gaudy, expensive ring with press-on nails.

  18. JustBitchy says:

It is heavy. I have a 4 carat round brilliant in platinum-simple setting and it’s heavy. I can’t imagine what 10-20 carats feels like. The quality is impeccable-wonder if the artist got the stone at one of the recent Christie’s or Sotheby’s auctions. FWIW I would have done large triangle daimonds on the sides not the trapaezoid. Say 10 carat center and 6 carat triangles on each side – now you are talking PS I subscribe to every auction publication and watch them live. My passion.

  19. Lwt00 says:

My engagement ring (which I designed) is the exact same – emerald cut center, trapezoid sides- only smaller. 0.75 carat center and 0.25 side stones. I still adore it and it gets all the compliments 🙂

  20. lucy2 says:

I LOVE the design (emerald cut with baguettes on the sides is my favorite style, always looks sort of art deco) but I think hers is too big.
But if she’s happy with it, great.

  21. Juxtapoze says:

I’ve never seen a celebrity wedding ring I like better than the nice rings at my local jewelry stores. Imho – better design goes into maximizing the esthetic of a more budget conscious ring. I love the little details and small accents. Celebrity rings usually only center on a massive diamond, which is kind of boring and gauche.

  22. Anonymous says:

I still think she and Nick Jonas suck after how they treated Olivia Culpo.

  23. Minorbird says:

I only like gaudy on two folks and its The late Liz Taylor and now Jennifer Lopez.
I think opulent living when I see pics of them in jewelry.

There is a certain lifestyle I have attached to wearers of that kind of jewelry.
I know she loves it, she looks happy.

  24. Y says:

Didn’t they just start dating? Geez…hold up a min. I believe in true love and all, but I’m getting disaster vibes here.

  25. NotSoSocialButterfly says:

Huh. I didn’t know she had that much money.

  26. H says:

It’s too big and ugly. Not a fan. Isn’t he on a soap opera? Nothing wrong with that, but they don’t make enough to purchase a $2M ring.

  27. Lex says:

No human should walk around with 2 million plus on their body! That’s a sure-fire target for thieves, no?

  28. K says:

It’s ridiculous for any one object to cost this much – diamonds are just some of the shiny objects out of the many lovely, shiny objects in the world, “valued” at whatever number someone pulls out of thin air. I could make a ring out of tin foil and tell you it’s worth $100, $1,000 or $10,000 (to me), and some idiot might even agree.

The focus of an engagement should be on building a healthy, happy partnership/melding of their families, not parading around a heavy, tacky ring that she’ll get sick of wearing or not even be safe wearing sometimes. I mean, sure, they look cute together, but this makes me want to barf with millions of us (like myself) broke and suffering in the world to see rich people throwing around money like it’s nothing.

  29. L4frimaire says:

They’ve only been a couple for four months? We’re they friends before? I’m not a fan of these huge Elizabeth Taylor style diamonds that cost as much as really good real estate. They look a bit ridiculous, but congratulations to the couple.

  30. CherryL says:

Getting engaged after four months with a borrowed ring screams ‘I’m not okay’.
