Prince William & Kate went on another ‘staycation’ holiday in the Isles of Scilly

Britain's Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge speak to people who found work through a job centre, at the London Bridge Jobcentre, in London

Note: This story came out before we knew about William’s coronavirus. This also seems like it was leaked from his office.

It was just two weeks ago when the Netherlands’ King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima had to return home after one day of vacationing in Greece. Europe is experiencing a full-blown second wave of the coronavirus, and European countries are initiating or contemplating new lockdown measures. In Willem-Alexander and Maxima’s case, they traveled to Greece and had to return home after one day because of the outcry from the Dutch people and Dutch politicians, all of whom were already adhering to new lockdown and travel restrictions. Britain is in much the same boat – while the UK’s corona numbers have been consistently bad (not America-bad, but bad for Europe), there’s been a lot of hand-wringing about the what, where and how of additional lockdown procedures. So instead of trying to figure out if he could manage to take his family on an extravagant ski holiday, Prince William apparently decided on another “staycation” holiday. William and Kate took the kids to the Isles of Scilly, again, like they did this summer.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge went on a family holiday to a modest stone cottage in the Isles of Scilly. William and Kate took George, seven, Charlotte, five, and Louis, two, away to a four-bedroom home on the islands 25 miles off Cornwall for a quiet ‘staycation’, The Sun reported. The weather was cloudy and temperatures remained at a glum 14C, but the Cambridges very much enjoyed the trip, according to locals.

It is the family’s second family staycation of 2020, following an earlier trip, also to the Scillies – where the couple were seen cycling and greeting residents in July.

A holidaymaker who saw the royals last week said: ‘We hardly noticed at first as they seemed a normal family on holiday intent on keeping themselves to themselves. The place where they were staying was quite modest and certainly not hugely luxurious. We couldn’t help thinking what the weather might be like in California — but it’s much better to be holidaying here in Britain.’

The isles have a population of 2,153, spread across just five of the 140 islands – a perfect getaway for those seeking isolated walks, cycling routes, quiet pubs and beaches. Prince Charles owns much of the land and one third of the homes, through the Duchy of Cornwall.

[From The Daily Mail]

First all, the “holidaymaker” was just someone inside Kensington Palace’s communications office. They couldn’t help but pathetically attempt to “swipe” at Prince Harry – “We couldn’t help thinking what the weather might be like in California — but it’s much better to be holidaying here in Britain.” Ah, yes. Harry is simply “on holiday” in California, I guess. It’s not that Harry moved to California with his wife and child because of his brother’s repugnant smear campaign against him. But now William gets to play The Good Brother Who Stayed.

Also: I absolutely do not believe that “the place where they were staying was quite modest and certainly not hugely luxurious.” Palace peeps always described William’s home in Wales (when he was in the RAF) as a “modest cottage,” and then when the photos came out years later, it turned out to be a nice-sized coastal home, practically a mini-mansion. This is probably just another Middle Class Bill shenanigan, just like the stunt queenery of the budget flight to Scotland.

Can any of you imagine what it must be like to spend 2/3 of the year on holiday, to count a Zoom bingo call as work, and to shamelessly milk the taxpayer for all we’re worth (just imagine the cost of security for the little middle class staycation)? Seriously? Can anyone truly justify this?

    • CuriousCole says:

Because of Willnot and Cannot articles like this, I have indeed considered what a hypothetical life as one nonstop holiday would be like. I would love two or three regular holidays a year, but I have not devoted years of my life to earning advanced degrees to waste it by not working as they do. I would go mad if I didn’t have something of substance in my routine.

    • RoyalBlue says:

It’s obscene that the public pays for this life of luxury. I wonder, why can’t kings be poor? Why do they have to lord it over the public with the opulence and grandeur. If I made the rules, I would insist that kings lived simpler lives. The heirs would hold regular jobs until they were called up to rule. It can’t be justified in any way or fashion.

      • Andrew’s Nemesis says:

@RoyalBlue Alas, you’re speaking of a Just Ruler, found in Aristotle and al-Farabi: those who rule out of pure goodness, integrity and modesty. A Just Ruler would never treat taxpayer money like a piggybank…

      • Nic919 says:

Kings gathered money because they used to actually have to defend their territory themselves. They haven’t had to do this in centuries and this grift has been ongoing for a long time.

    • Olenna says:

There is no justification. These people and their fans are full of sht and malicious hypocrisy.

    • KW says:

      top CEOs can, apparently.

  2. (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

Well, poor little lambkins NEED a vacation!! It’s HARD to do one Zoom call a week!! VERY hard! And all that work, just looking for new clothes on line?? Poor little sausage must’ve worn herself ragged! And c’mon… we all need a change of scenery…who doesn’t get tired looking over acres and acres of our own property, or being waited on hand and foot!! IT. IS. EXHAAAAAAUSSTING!

While a good portion of “his subjects” worry how they’ll pay the rent or put food on their tables, he is carefree enough to go on a “staycation”. A$$es!

Same for ALL of them! Petty Betty MUST move between castles or HER Christmas is ruined? FEH! Put them on a damned salary, only so much per “engagement” and walking a tarmac, greeting a dignitary and going to a consulate don’t equal 3 tasks anymore. Or better yet, retire the lot of ‘em and be done with it!

    • Becks1 says:

The Top CEO deserves a vacation, goddamnit!!!!! Wont someone think of the poor overworked poodle?!?!?!

  3. Maliksmama says:

All those vacays!? How do Brits tolerate that bull? Do any of the other members of the BRF vacay like W&K?

    • Becks1 says:

The other members of the royal family are a lot more subtle about their holidays, and Will and Kate really don’t have direct peers at this point. Like, the Queen goes to Balmoral and Sandringham, but she’s not really going on vacations to tropical beaches at this point in time (I don’t know if she ever did that, I’m just saying she doesn’t now.) And same with Charles – his “Vacations” at this point seem to be mostly to other properties he has in the UK. Or I think when there are tours, Charles may add a vacation to the beginning or end ( like when he went to Cuba last year I think.) But if he’s regularly going on jaunts to the Greek isles or whatever, he keeps it under wraps.

You cant really compare what the York princesses or Zara or Peter do bc they aren’t working royals.

I think part of the problem is that the Cambridges think this kind of leak makes them look and “normal” – like the story from last year of Kate with the kids at the pool at a Norfolk hotel and spa – and it just ends up making them look privileged bc they aren’t worried about their jobs or getting sick.

    • notasugarhere says:

The other working royals who do go on big foreign vacations are the Wessexes. They take a private jet to Switzerland for a skiing break at least once a season.

  4. Harla says:

It’s hysterical that the RRs can’t sell one article about the Cambridge’s without mentioning the Sussex’s in one form or another. Could it be that the Royal Pigeon Couple simply can’t hold anyone’s attention all on their own?

  5. ABritGuest says:

Yes I’m sure a ‘holidaymaker’ was comparing the weather in California compared to Britain eyeroll lol.

Hope they had a nice time

  6. Valiantly Varnished says:

WTF did they need a holiday for?? A holiday from WHAT?? And to go on a holiday while your country goes back into lockdown…ON TOP of the news that he had the Rona in April and kept it a secret?? Willbore is not very good at this optics game when he doesn’t have his little brother to throw under the bus as a distraction.

  7. tee says:

“certainly not hugely luxurious” lol their reporting is always so heavy handed

    • Golly Gee says:

Yes. The words “not hugely”. Is it somewhat luxurious, fairly luxurious, or quite luxurious, but not hugely luxurious?

    • Amy Too says:

4 bedrooms is bigger than my real house. I would love to live in a “modest” 4 bedroom stone cottage. Instead I have 2 bedrooms, 3 if you count the small room we use as an office, and aluminum siding from the 70s.

      • Nic919 says:

It’s modest compared to their usual mansions I guess. Practically roughing it.

      • notasugarhere says:

They still had four staff at that ‘cottage’ in Wales, which was located on the private estate of one of the wealthiest men in the UK.

  8. Mac says:

I’m surprised they went to Scilly again. Charles’ house there isn’t particularly nice.

  9. heygingersnaps says:

Maybe they can do us a favour the next time they go to the Isles of Scilly and go holiday at Samson Island. One can hope.

    • Sarah says:

I googled to see if I’m missing something here and can only find that it’s uninhabited. Let’s be honest, even if they did that we’d have a quote from a passing seagull about what a normal family they are.

  10. equality says:

Charles owns a house on Scilly. If they were staying there, why would someone think they were regular vacationers?

    • Mac says:

Charles rents the house to tourist. It’s actually pretty cheap.

      • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

Charles “rents out” the house? You mean, HE’S MAKING MONEY UNDER HIS ROYAL STATUS????? *GASP* *CHOKE* *SPLUTTER*. WHERE ARE MY SMELLING SALTS??! I FEEL FAINT!!! WHERE’S MY COUCH????

I thought Royals couldn’t “make money”?? Or does he donate it? Does Anne donate the money she makes from her horses/horseshows?? Oh, wait…I forgot (SILLY, silly me!!). It’s only if Duking/Duchessing while BLACK when you can’t make money with your royal title intact!

    • notasugarhere says:

Charles Windsor does not personally own the Duchy of Cornwall. If the house was purchased with Duchy money, Charles doesn’t own it. The Duchy owns it. Article doesn’t state that W&K stayed in that house. It sounds like they cost the taxpayers even more money, by renting a different place instead of staying at the house already secured for Charles.

  11. Digital Unicorn says:

Hmmm, I wonder if he went on this ‘staycation’ on Daddy’s land to recover from his COVD-19 bout, the one where he was apparently very ill. If he struggled to breath he would and should have been hospitalised – am not saying he didn’t have it but i would question how sick he was.

I’ll bet KP authorised this leak and now that its blown up in their faces they will now come out and say his symptoms were mild.

What is coming that these 2 leaks are a distraction from – another affair story, mismanagement of the royal foundation funds or maybe more about how he leaked all that crap about the Sussex’s. He’s trying to bury something,

  12. Kalana says:

I think Dan Wooten’s article about William secretly having Covid is going to get far more clicks than this pathetic attempt to seem down to earth and relatable. At least release a picture of the family.

  13. Noodle says:

To the holidaymaker who wondered: the weather in California is quite nice this time of year, thanks for asking. Now go suck on it.

  14. Züri says:

The British press/ RF doesn’t seem to understand what a “staycation” entails. You stay at your home and do things in the close vicinity (when you’re not in the midst of a pandemic). You don’t travel to another part of the country and stay in a property that isn’t yours.

    • Agirlandherdog says:

Thanks. I was just about to pose this question to other commentors. I have always been of the belief that for a staycation you STAY home and just do things locally.

    • Becks1 says:

Last time they went there UK posters here and on twitter said that a “staycation” in the UK means you stay within the UK, not that you stay home. But in the US it definitely means what you said.

      • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

But didn’t ol’ BJ and his merry band say that you *weren’t* supposed to travel? Didn’t one of those guys, Dominick something catch heat for defiantly going something like 200mi. *back and forth from London* WHEN CONTAGIOUS to see his mother, or take his son somewhere, or something like that??

      • Becks1 says:

I’m not sure what the current travel restrictions are, I know over the summer you were allowed to travel within the UK, at least I think so.

      • Digital Unicorn says:

@becks1, yes during the summer you were allowed to travel within the UK, the gov actively encouraged it. But England (not the entire UK) is going into another full lockdown from Friday for a month with speculation it will be extended – so if these 2 nitwits go on anymore ‘staycations’ from Friday onwards they are breaking lockdown and will be liable for a large fine.

    • Dalloway says:

In the UK, typically Brits travel to Europe. Especially Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy, for nice weather, so definitely Brits think staying within its own borders is a staycation.

England is going into lockdown on Thursday, and there’s been free movement especially in the Southeast (where I live) and Southwest (Cornwall). Wales is currently in lockdown and many Northern cities are in a higher tier with more restrictions than the south. Last week was half-term break from school, so honestly most of my colleagues were on vacation last week, so this fits in with the normal, middle-class image they’re going for. It’s still too much, my colleagues actually work hard.

  15. Elizabeth Regina says:

So the do nothings found the energy for another vacation. How marvellous!

  16. Dandun says:

Im Irish and over here and in Britain a staycation means a holiday within your own country so it has a different meaning than in America. Most people here go on a holiday abroad every year so that would normally be a lot more common than a staycation.

  17. MsIam says:

Haven’t there been a lot of protests about the lockdown and other restrictions in the U.K. recently? Hugo on YT has been covering them. Maybe they leaked his corona “illness” to distract from the potential blowback from people about them traveling while everyone else is restricted.

  18. Elizabeth Phillips says:

Isn’t a staycation when you stay at home?

  19. molly says:

Yeah, cloudy, damp, windy, and 57 degrees sounds soooooo much more pleasant than sunny southern California. I love vacationing in “glum” places!

    • Dalloway says:

Last week was truly a miserable week here! It rained and was dark by 3:30pm because there was no sun. I would have stayed in Norfolk, but you can’t predict the weather!

  20. Seraphina says:

Meanwhile we have people juggling kids, schooling at home, job loss and some having depression and anxiety without knowing how they will fair. But we have this FFBRF vacationing during a pandemic because doing what they do is so taxing. THIS is why Kate caught so hard to get the title. THIS is a perk of being married to Wills

  21. Sofia says:

I don’t even understand why these two take as much vacations as they do. I’m sure the other royals all take lots of holidays too even with the amount of numbers that they do but the Cambridges numbers are low even compared to them.

  22. Lemons says:

I actually didn’t make the California connection until Kaiser pointed it out. These people are nuts.

  23. Amy Bee says:

Charles doesn’t do modest so I’m sure it’s a mini mansion. The holidaymaker does sound like a KP courtier though. It seems like KP has a contract with the sun to report on their vacations as they always get scoop on where went on vacation.

    • notasugarhere says:

It doesn’t state they stayed in Charles’s house though. It sounds more like they cost extra money selecting a for-rent holiday home instead of staying in Charles’s already-secured place.

  24. L4frimaire says:

These people are such amateurs. Always trying to deflect that their idle life is a vacation interrupted by “ work” and PR spin. All this BS just to take a swipe at Harry, who is living and working in California, not vacationing. Also, these ignorant dolts they can look up the damn forecast in California, which has different climates and is much bigger then the UK, not to mention a constant flare up of wildfires which has devastated many communities. Every time William scratches his bald head, they need to mention the Sussexes and their luxurious mansion in California. The jokes write themselves 🙄.

  25. Courtney B says:

They could even zoom from there if they really wanted. It’s a blip of time. The queen works on the red boxes ever day except Christmas and Easter. He could spend 30-60 minutes for cripe’s sake.

  26. Carolind says:

What about the fact William had Covid19 in April?

  27. yinyang says:

So this is why they worked two days in a row that week. Honestly I’m so tired of them, when is the UK going to kick them to the curb?
