Queen Elizabeth is ‘delighted’ that granddaughter Zara Tindall is pregnant again

Zara and Mike Tindall leave with Britain's Queen Elizabeth after they attended the Patron's Lunch on the Mall, an event to mark the queen's 90th birthday, in London

I know some people are convinced that Zara Phillips-Tindall is trash because she made faces at Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding, but whatever. I honestly don’t believe Harry ever held any kind of grudge against Zara. Harry and William both treated Zara like she was their big sister, and I would even argue that Zara’s independent yet royal-adjacent life is probably what Harry is aiming for with his move out of the UK. Anyway, this week Zara and Mike announced that they are expecting their third child. Zara has had two painful miscarriages in the past, which is why the Queen decided to let it be known that she’s particularly “delighted” with Zara’s pregnancy:

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh are “delighted” to be expecting another great-grandchild, following the news that Zara Tindall is pregnant. Palace aides said the monarch and Prince Philip are thrilled that their granddaughter Zara, Princess Anne’s daughter, and her husband Mike Tindall are expecting their third baby. In a break with tradition the announcement came directly from former England rugby captain Mike on his podcast The Good The Bad and The Rugby. Tindall happily told his co-hosts Alex Payne and James Haskell, “It’s been a good week for me, had a little scan last week—third Tindall on its way.”. With two daughters already, six-year-old Mia and two-year-old Lena, Tindall said he was hoping for a boy: “I’ll love it whether a boy or a girl – but please be a boy.”

The Queen, who is close to Zara, is said to be particularly happy about the news after Zara and Mike suffered two miscarriages while trying for their second baby. Zara has previously said the hardest part about her first miscarriage, which happened late into the pregnancy, was having to tell the world, because news of the pregnancy had been made public. In a rare interview she said: “In our case, it was something that was really rare; it was nature saying, ‘This one’s not right,’” she said in a 2018 interview. The couple endured another miscarriage before going on to have baby Lena in 2018. The family lives a low key life close on Princess Anne’s Gatcombe estate, where they love to ride and walk in the Gloucestershire countryside.

Princess Anne told Vanity Fair earlier this year how one of the joys of being a grandmother was teaching her grandchildren to ride. Equestrian Zara continued riding during both of her pregnancies and even competed when she was expecting. Like her mother, Zara rides out most mornings.

Tindall revealed that they only told their two girls, who are desperate for another sibling, that they are expecting a third baby after their three month scan. ”Lena’s growing up – she’s two-and-a-half now – she wants something younger to play with and dress up!” he said on the podcast. While he wouldn’t give away the due date, Mike joked that they might call their baby Covi or Covina, in a nod to the pandemic.

Many have pointed out that the Queen letting it be known that she’s delighted about Zara’s pregnancy is just the kind of personal, grandmotherly touch which was sorely lacking in the palace’s “it’s personal” response to Harry and Meghan’s news of their miscarriage. I’m not defending the Queen here, because I do think she’s petty, out-of-touch and awful, but I would imagine that if and when Meghan and Harry announce any happy news, the Queen’s “delight” will probably be recorded. The palace’s response to the Sussexes’ miscarriage news came across as so impersonal and cold because it was SAD news, is what I’m saying. Plus, yes, Zara is the Queen’s favorite grandchild. So there’s that too.

They really need to work on their vocabulary, they use ‘delighted’ for everything, it’s become a bit boring now. But besides that, congrats to Zara and Mike! both seem very likable, something you can’t say about all the family members.

Zara is a known bitch, sorry. She looked like someone had waved a turd under her nose when Bishop Curry was preaching at Meghan’s wedding. She was awful. Her husband seems likeable though. I can’t help thinking this “the queen is delighted” is a dig against Meghan. *Beep* this whole family.

      • Poppy says:

Having met Zara and her branch of the family, through eventing, i can say she is not a known bitch, quite the opposite actually. We all think very highly of her.

      • kelleybelle says:

@ Poppy, do check out YouTube footage of her reaction to Bishop Curry’s sermon. It was profoundly snooty and disdainful.

      • Poppy says:

@kelleybelle oh i’ve seen the video. Everyone was rolling their eyes. It was over the top and out of place. I don’t know anyone who thought it was a good idea, poc(like myself) included. Also she was heavily pregnant at the time and most likely did not want to be there.

      • Becks1 says:

Rolling your eyes (as the royals were doing, not just Zara) in the middle of a church service being broadcast around the world is never a good look.

Maybe it is a cultural thing, bc most Americans I talk to (and in my own American opinion) found the sermon moving and uplifting. but regardless of how “over the top” it may have been for the Brits – have some manners.

Now that said, we are here for any tea you have on the royals.

Omg, I was thinking the same thing a few weeks ago about “delighted” and “delightful.” I was like British ppl used that word oddly and often. I’d use delightful to describe watching my nieces and nephews chasing butterflies. It’s a very light hearted word to me. They’ll use it to describe something that’s much more emotional. If they hear a speech that’s moved them to immediately get up and change the world for the better. It just feels odd to me.

    • Lizzythe2 says:

They can use any words they like. It’s a different country. Every country has their own words. I’m sure everyone has been bitchy at times. I’m sure Meghan has been called that, the Queen, Diana, the Queen Mother. All women have their moments. As far a dig by the Queen to Meghan who just lost a child, please stop. Ridiculous. And I can see people coming to my church (it is more lively) and making the same face Zara made because they’ve not seen anything like it. But I wouldn’t call any visitor who came to my church a bitch because they made a face. They just don’t know why the preacher is reacting in that manner because they have not experienced the Holy Spirit in the manner the the preacher or singers have. Or any other member of my church for that matter. Churches who are Charismatic/Pentecostal tend to be seen by many other Christians churches as odd.

LOL, yeah because she spends so much time with the great-grandchildren she already has 🙄

I absolutely think that Zara and Peter’s lives were/are what Harry is trying to emulate – still a part of the family, still attend major events, but free to make his own money. time will tell about the “major events,” like Trooping or future Christmases, but I do think Harry looked at Zara and Peter and thought, “their lives are much better than mine.” Money, royal perks, but a lot less media attention and pressure and more freedom. And that’s definitely what he wanted for Archie.

Anyway it is another little royal baby boom isn’t it, between Zara, Eugenie, and Pippa, wonder if Kate will have another?

    • Maria says:

I think Kate is finished but I bet Bea is next.

    • Lucky Charm says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if Megan is included in that mix, too. If she’s not already pregnant my guess is she will be soon. I know she miscarried in July, but it’s not unusual for a woman to get pregnant again within a few months.

  4. Cryptkeeper says:

Zara is really a favourite of the Queen. Some people believed it was Harry but I think it was always Zara.
The Queen always has a huge smile when photographed with Zara.
Zara has much in common with the Queen in terms of horses.
I wish the Queen didn’t show so much favouritism, it only adds to the family dysfunction.
In any event, best wishes to Zara and Mike Tindall.

    • Becks1 says:

I’ve always thought its Peter and Zara, which kind of makes sense as they were the first and I do think the queen is “close” to Anne (as close as she is to any of her kids I guess?)

    • Sofia says:

I feel like the Queen’s favourite grandchild is something that changes every other day. Some will say Harry, then it’ll be Peter, then Beatrice and then Zara.

As for the Queen’s favourite, it’s widely accepted to be Sophie, not Anne. And Andrew obvs

    • Jay says:

To be fair, I get the impression that the queen loves horses generally more than any of her children or grandchildren specifically 😊.

  5. Steph says:

All of you in the know, please explain this to me: why is it ok for Mike Tindall, Edo, and Brooksbanks to all have careers and private financial investments but not Meghan? They are all married into the same generation.

    • Melissa says:

@Steph because none of them are guilty of Duchessing While Black.

    • Vivi says:

Because they don’t carry out work on behalf of the queen. Nor are they taking moving from the sovereign like harry and meghan do. That is why they are allowed to carry out on working.

      • Becks1 says:

Well, H&M are no longer receiving money from the SG and are no longer carrying out duties on behalf of the queen. But we still have the daily ranting about their work.

    • Kkat says:

      Because they are white men

    • Daphne says:

Because none of their wives are working royals. If Harry had stepped back from life as a working royal before his wedding, Meghan could have kept doing what she was doing. But they would not have received the Duke and Duchess titles. Harry and Meghan wanted to keep working as royals to an extent (representing in the commonwealth etc) but at the same time make commercial deals. The current solution is more clear cut and allows Harry and Meghan more freedom, while sparing the BRF questions over every deal Harry makes. I do think it is the cleaner solution. Though a big loss for the royal family as they lost their super stars.

  6. Sofia says:

Is this really worthy of an article by VF? Grandma delighted by granddaughter’s pregnancy isn’t exactly ground-breaking or special

  7. Caitlin Turner says:

Lol so Zara’s husband has a podcast 👀👀👀👀👀👀👀 one that he made a personal announcement on…hope that comes up when everyone is deciding to shit all over Harry and meg for their Spotify deal

  8. molly says:

I adore Mike and Zara, and I’m thrilled they’re pregnant, but I REALLY hope this is the boy for the sake of the kid. Nothing like having your dad on the record as hoping you’d be something you’re not.

    • SK2 says:

Ugh at privileged people having more than two kids and double ugh at gender favouritism … it’s really pathetic to “want a boy” because they already have two girls. Children are children and they enrich your life regardless of their biological sex

  9. Lizzythe2 says:

Congrats to the family! I’m sure Mike will be happy with whatever they have as long as it’s healthy but I’m pretty sure he would rather not be the only male in the family. In my family females outnumber the males.
