Prince William is ‘thrilled’ that George & Charlotte are learning to ride horses

The Cambridge Family attend a special Christmas Pantomime performance at London's Palladium Theatre

I can’t figure out if the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s PR offensive is actually having the desired effect. Yes, we were clowning on William being declared the “sexiest bald man” and yes, we were astonished by Kate’s insistence on exploiting a murder victim. But how are those moves playing with Will & Kate’s political “base” of Brexiters and older, white British people? Is it landing? It doesn’t feel like it’s landing. Those older white people love the Queen, of course. But it feels like William, Kate and Charles all know that their sh-t isn’t really landing. Which is why Will & Kate are trying something else: look, a story about their children!

Prince George and Princess Charlotte are taking part in a longstanding royal family tradition: horseback riding! The royal siblings have been honing their riding skills over the past year, PEOPLE has learned.

Prince William is reportedly “thrilled” that his kids have taken an interest in learning to ride horses, according to The Times in the U.K.

George, 7, has reportedly been taking lessons since he was 4 years old, while Charlotte, 5, has always been fascinated by horses. While attending an event to meet and honor British Olympians at Buckingham Palace in October 2016, Kate revealed that Charlotte, then 1 year old, had developed a love of horses — just like her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth.

Kate “emphasized that Charlotte has this passion about horses and although she doesn’t echo it, she’ll do her best to champion and encourage it,” Paralympic Equestrian Natasha Baker said at the time.

[From People]

Between the brothers, it was generally established that Prince Harry was a better polo player and he was more natural on a horse. William only seems to enjoy horses for playing polo, but I don’t think we’ve ever heard anything about William going for a ride out in the country. He’s usually too busy trimming rose bushes, you know? Meanwhile, the Queen, the Duke of York and Princess Anne all ride regularly, for pleasure. Still, it’s established that the Cambridges are around horses and are deeply embedded in horse culture. It’s not surprising that George and Charlotte are being encouraged to ride, nor is it surprising that a rich little girl loves horses. Gee, with all of this talk about the Cambridge children and horses, I almost forgot that William remarked on what color skin Harry and Meghan’s children would have.

When all else fails, trot out the kiddies. That’s how you know their PR didn’t land, otherwise they wouldn’t need to do this. The Other Brother and ofWilliam use every single person in their orbit, including their kids and that’s a shame.

    • Elizabeth Regina says:

Predictable. If all else fails wheel out the poor kiddies.

    • Becks1 says:

Bingo. If we want to know how something is “landing” see if they bring out the kiddos.

Ex: Pandemic Express didnt go over well, kids went to a play.

    • Lady D says:

They have been pushing this ‘learning to ride so they can ride with granny over the summer’ storyline for 4-5 days now. I don’t understand why they won’t let it go. I thought that the older two were already riding? I was sure I had read a story about Charlotte on horseback at one point.

    • MashedPeas says:

Not just rich little girls. All kinds of little girls love horses. The difference is, rich little girls can expect to own one. For royal girls there’s no difference between wanting a plastic bead bracelet kit, a hairband, or a horse.

  2. VS says:

the rf is a just a show in the uk…………..there is almost no reporting on their “WORK”; everything is about themselves or just bs

    • Noki says:

That is why the general reaction when Harry got his ‘first job’ was people questioning if he was capable or even had the most basic of skills. I think they need to dial down the pomp and ribbon cutting and show some actual substantial work and results of their charities. Do they offer annual reports on how their patronages are fairing ?

  3. Cecilia says:

I mean its a nice thing for the kids to do especially in this pandemic.

I personally think that anything will land with their conservative brexit base but then again they weren’t the ones that needed convincing in the first place. I read a comment on here yesterday that it must be working or they wouldn’t keep doing it (this pr i mean)

    • Jenn says:

This story was cobbled together from old information. Unless William is leaking this is just a PR speculation.

  4. Yoyo says:

After that dragging of Willileaks over the weekend, even the Dodo bird knew a story about the kids was going to be dropped.
Hydrate, drive safe, let’s not forget crocodile.
Yeah, Harry is a better athlete, person, genuine, hard working, (man holding down 3 jobs) reliable, the only thing Willileaks cornered the market on is his anger, vindictiveness, dishonesty, jealousy, thin skin, lying, cheating and yellow teeth.

  5. Noki says:

What does William actually do for fun. What does he enjoy, not the things he pretends to enjoy..i really want to know if he had a choice what gets his fire burning.

    • Snuffles says:

Football/Soccer. Hunting….that’s all I got. And Kate enjoys photography.

Honestly, if you really stop to think about it, we don’t really know much that is true. 99% of what they show us is a facade.

      • Pétulia says:

Yes, that’s true and it’s why people don’t have genuine love and respect for them. They simply don’t know them. They spend years hiding after their marriage only to come out when Meghan appeared.

      • Becks1 says:

This is something I’ve often thought. What do they like? What do they enjoy? What are their passions?

For Kate, I have: photography (or at least we’re told that’s her thing), tennis, making curry sometimes?

For William, I have: soccer/football, going on hunts the day after Christmas.

Even something like polo – does William really love that and enjoy it, or is it just something he does because he thinks its what he should do as a royal?

We dont need to know everything about them. But with Meghan, we know she loves to cook and bake, we know she loves avocado toast and french fries, we know she loves animals and loves to rescue them, we know she’s passionate about women’s rights. NOW, part of that is because she lived a very visible life on social media before getting married, but Kate didnt get married until she was 29, and we still saw no sign of her interests and passions besides going on vacations.

They’re almost like this black holes where there is just nothing there. I know that for some, that is part of their appeal, so that other people can kind of put their own personalities onto them, if that makes sense. But it also just makes them very boring and flat and hard to connect with.

      • Chaine says:

Kate is a “photographer” to the extent she has completed Brooklyn Beckham Photographer Correspondence School Course #1: “ensure the subject sits still and smiles before snapping their picture”

      • tcbc says:

I think Kate enjoys shopping and working out. I know women who consider either or both their main hobbies (I WISH I could say I loved working out.)

    • Mila says:

Honestly honestly think he’s one of those toxic masculine men that don’t believe men are supposed to have ‘fun’ lol, or women for that matter.

    • Kalana says:

William likes motorcycles, hunting, polo, I think he has a car collection, scuba diving, and he probably spends time just being a posh layabout eating cheese on toast and playing video games or watching tv.

Kate likes makeup tutorials, coloring books, cooking, exercising, and tennis.

      • Emily_C says:

I doubt he plays video games. Those require work and thought. You can lose, even if you can reload immediately. He seems more the type to watch sports, drink way too much, cheat on his wife, and that’s it. One of those guys who hangs around jocks if they’ll let him (he’s rich so they’ll let him) rather than being one.

    • Cessily says:

From what little I have read it sounds like he drinks with his lads and watches sports.

  6. Harper says:

My, how interesting. George has been riding for three years and it is just now revealed. Fiercely private William is “thrilled” that this article is being printed instead of anything about how he questioned Harry about how dark his child’s skin would be.

  7. MangoAngelesque says:

But what colour horses do they like to ride?

    • JT says:

Omg. Pleas tell me they aren’t paper bag testing the horses.

    • BothSidesNow says:

@ MangoAngelesque, that was brilliant!! Yes!!! And when all else fails, let’s bring out our privileged children as a cover for the lack of work that we do and the vile racist POS that we actually are because we are truly vile, lazy, racist and ill-equipped to be actually considered to be competent in what our actually titles afford us.

  8. Louise177 says:

How is this a story when right in the article it says they’ve been riding for a few years? This is weird.

  9. Amy Bee says:

I mean there’s nothing to leak about Harry and Meghan and KP can’t brief against the Sussexes in the press so here’s a story about the children learning to ride.

    • Cecilia says:

At some point people are going to get uninterested in the kids and the queen will pass at some point. What will the cambs do then, besides throwing charles under the bus?

      • Becks1 says:

come now cecilia, you’re forgetting that most time-honored of Windsor traditions – throwing your own children under the bus. In a few years, when the queen has passed and the Cambs cant use their kids as distractions because they’re young and cute, they’ll use their teenage and college years as distractions from their own issues.

      • Cecilia says:

@Becks1 george charlotte and louis are going to grow up holding a grudge against their parents and i fear that their teenage years are going to be very ugly. I wouldn’t even be surprised if charlotte and louis end up doing a prince harry. Before george even gets married and has kids of his own.

      • Mila says:

@becks oh 100 percent I can’t see a future with William doesn’t try and throw one of his children under the bus. Or publicly concoct some sort of rebellious child noble father image onto them. Remember in that article Kate said that the Sussex is leaving has ‘thrown her children under the bus.’ If the bus didn’t exist there be nothing for anyone to be under in place of anyone. And the article heavily on plied that it was the Sussex children who are meant to be placed under the it instead. They know the bus is waiting.

      • Mila says:

@cecillia Charlotte even now definitely seems like a sort of child that will run away to her aunts house. I fear Louis will be the disappointment or pr ‘crafted’ into the disappointment of his father to look down on. I don’t see George turning out like anything other than exactly like his father.

      • Carolind says:

Mila, you are aware that George is a 7 year old child? You have nothing, absolutely nothing, to judge him on. You should be ashamed of yourself and so should all the rest on here who have a go at him.

      • Becks1 says:

We’re not judging George. We’re judging his parents and the Windsor family, which does not have a good track record of turning out well adjusted heirs to the throne.

      • Emily_C says:

Charlotte’s going to be the main one thrown under the bus, because the misogyny in this family and in the coverage of them is off the charts. She’s got her aunt and uncle in the states to run to now though. I hope just that is going to make a difference for all the kids.

  10. mybitchcarole says:

Lol its lot to unpack here . First during canada tour prince george was not keen on penny and he asled his dad to take him away from it. Suddenly developed love for horse ?? It’s possible ok. But it’s too late to royal standard. I have seen william riding pony when he was under 3 and frequently harry too. Anyways queen doesnt like cambridges at all. This is pr points for older generation that they will carryroyal traditional unlike Sussex.

I hear many rumors on twitter and other SM that Kate is having an affair with a man. And william knows this and slowly testing the water to see the public reaction. A birdie told that he is working with some people to clear is name. I think he is preparing for his royal marraige exist if not this year but definitely after queen died. That’s why Kate was rarely mention in William pr but Kate and carole constantly included william. Kate is desperate for another baby to save her image . If they have the fourth kid it not be William’s. Because William’s giving fourth kid means emotional tie to Kate and he doesnt even want louis.

Also on other hand pippa and james mattews marraige is on rock too. It seems lady from his past to paying attention.

My question does pippa use surrogate for her second child. In this article she is seven months pregnant because she gave birth to her daughter on march2021.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-9055527/Pippa-Middleton-seen-time-pregnancy-reports.html

I always though during seven months woman will have huge baby bump . Am I wrong . Anyone clarify me. Thanks

    • lanne says:

We saw how awful bump watch was for Meghan–let’s not go there, okay? Let’s stop policing women’s bodies, period. If Pippa did use a surrogate, that’s her right to do so. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. Every woman carries differently, and it’s none of our business anyway. We’re NOT the British media at Celebitchy.

      • mybitchcarole says:

Dont take the wrong way . I’m just curious that’s it. It’s ok to use surrogate.

    • Mila says:

They just wanted to include a link to the Queen in there somehow LOL.

    • Mila says:

Depends some women pop earlier some women pop extremely late and I just never that big, it’s more about where the baby sits.

    • Mila says:

Yes, I honestly don’t think she likes Kate, she has never taken a key eye to her. I think she finds Kate a bit desperate of a step wife and kind of dumb. I think that’s what she liked about Meghan similar to what she liked about the Obama’s.
Meghan didn’t/doesn’t see anything overtly ‘special’ about the Queen apart from being a grandmother/great grandmother. She didn’t treat her in a too ‘grandly’, and in a too wannabe/grovelling way that I think Kate might.

      • tcbc says:

I guess, maybe? But when people fantasize about the queen thinking anyone, even Kate, is dumb, it makes me laugh. Elizabeth has no formal education, and has never done nor said anything which would indicate any kind of intellect. I know people who don’t go to university can also be very smart, but even those people should not be head of a modern state in any capacity, IMO.

And yes, Kate seems lazy, but it’s not like Elizabeth’s “work” is particularly arduous, either intellectually or physically. That makes Kate’s laziness even worse, but it doesn’t make Elizabeth a hard worker, like many like to claim.

And…to be honest, maybe part of me thinks Kate got a look at what Elizabeth actually does and correctly clocked it as meaningless busywork and decided to see if she could get away with not doing it, both because she is lazy and because she knows it’s pointless.

      • Nic919 says:

The Queen likes Sophie because Sophie made an effort to like what the Queen likes, which includes horses. Kate has done nothing to show interests that are similar to the Queen. So the Queen won’t be bothered with her but will tolerate that she has children to extend the line. Besides Kate is generally quite dim so I doubt the Queen has much to say to her beyond polite small talk.

No one expects the Queen to launch into a dissertation on Diderot, but Kate says actual things like “can you taste the smell by smelling it”? whereas the Queen can do small talk as she has done by meeting thousands of people over the years.

Kate has simply been lazy and what some may call “meaningless busywork” others might call building support through the everyday people who are the ones who can kick you out of your position. It might not be work, but it is networking of a sort and the less people feel a personal connection to the monarch, the less they will want to support their ridiculous lifestyle.

One of the main reasons why this Oprah interview is harming Kate is because no one really knows who she is and therefore saying she’s backstabbed Meghan is plausible because Kate has been a cipher for years.

      • Keri says:

Who can forget Kate the art history major asking if they still made faberge eggs? It’s no wonder Meghan ran circles around her and the rest of them. And for all the times the UK media has questioned Harry’s intelligence, he was smart enough to get out before William becomes king and is supporting himself and is succeeding beyond expectations. How many of those royal lazy asses have the guts to walk away?

Poor Louis and Charlotte, but especially Charlotte. The misogyny and spare dynamic within that cold corrupt family will work to destroy them as history will repeat if they don’t get out. I’m rooting for them to get a good education and learn from the California branch of the family. They deserve better than to be fed to the press to prop up George. We all know this is their future.

  11. Izzy says:

They really are trying every trick they can think of to try and distract from the racism and the new charges against Maxwell.

    • Chica says:

But where will they go next? More stories about Eugenie’s baby? Or Zara? Problem is Cams and Charles don’t like focus on others, everyone else is a mess ( Andrew, Anne’s son) ..Meanwhile the Sussexes are out of sight with not a leak in sight. Who woulda thought this would go sideways so quickly?

      • Liz version 700 says:

There were already stories being dropped that Eugenie’s marriage is in trouble. Pickings are getting slim.

  12. P says:

Meh, pretty standard for rich kids.

    • Millenial says:

I’m glad you mentioned rich, because this is a bit out of touch. Where I live horse riding lessons are $45/hour for kids. It gets even worse when. you start leasing/renting horses and stables.

Like, good for their kids, they can afford the sport. But it’s not economically feasible to 85-90% of the population (in either Britain or the U.S.).

      • Becks1 says:

They can “afford” it because I’m sure they are trotting off to Sandringham and using the Queen’s horses, her staff, etc.

When you look at it that way its even more out of touch.

      • Ann says:

Horse back riding is a very expensive hobby, particularly if you end up owning horses. A friend of ours moved to the country so his wife could keep horses, and it cost him a bloody fortune. She finally gave it up.

    • Lightpurple says:

Especially standard for rich kids whose great grandmother loves and breeds horses that have competed and medaled at the Olympics and whose great aunt and second cousin are equestrians who have competed at and medaled at the Olympics.

  13. Pétulia says:

It land but not in the way they want to. William want that genuine love and respect people have for Harry and he isn’t getting it same with Kate and Meghan.
All they have is love by default or worse indifference.

    • Mila says:

I don’t think you’ll ever have it. People only tolerate and pretend to like him to try and spite Harry but they don’t truly. I think they think if they uplift William falsely okay carry jealous and want to run back or something.

  14. Becks1 says:

Royal children are learning how to ride horses?????? I cant believe it, this has never happened before!!!! I am shocked I tell you!!

(yeah I dont think their PR is working if this is the story they are “trotting” out lol)

    • Topaz says:

LOL , totally shocking news. Should be on BBC tonight.
But it feels like they are arguing point by point the interview. Harry did mention he is taking Archie on bike rides, something he wasn’t allowed to do. So here we are being told about horses.

  15. lanne says:

Standard for rich kids, yes, but it also emphasizes how absurdly narrow the conditions are for those kids to gain approval. They MUST engage ONLY in officially acceptable rich kid activities, must only socialize with approved, socially-proper kids, must look a certain way (for Charlotte, it means she must be stick thin), have certain tastes, and even think certain thoughts. If they deviate one inch from these social standards, Prince Harry’s example shows us that they will be Cast.Out. Prince William once said that he would be okay with his kids coming out as LGBTQ. That is completely untrue. George would likely be sent to whatever rich kids call conversion camp to “straighten him out” he’s the heir after all. The proof of William’s lie is, once again, Harry. Harry married a biracial woman and they tried to drive her out of the family in disgrace. In the British RF, you do what is expected of you, or you are not loved, valued, appreciated, or respected. That’s the lesson we can all take from the story of Harry and Meghan.

Those poor Cambridge kids. I feel for all three of them. For their sake, they better toe the family line. I wouldn’t wish their upbringing on anyone. No wealth or privilege is worth this toxicity.

  16. Over it says:

Nailed it Kaiser as usual, the kiddos love horses, let’s forget william is a racist,

  17. Midge says:

A far more interesting story for me would be a report on how much help Kate and Bill have. How many nannies, cooks, grounds and housekeepers?Does Kate kelp the kids bathe? Has Bill ever read a story to the kids before bed? They parade the kids around, make fake cards to Granny Diana and talk about them riding horses like the Queen, they use them as props but what’s goin on behind the scenes? My guess is Bill has very limited interaction with the kids and that Kate has help with a capital H.

    • Mila says:

i’m quite sure they have to nannies. The primary nanny nanny Maria and then an assistant nanny and two cooks and obviously lots of groundskeepers. Meanwhile with the kids, I think William tries but he has a very short temper and is unable to relate to Charlotte like one of those old fashion fathers.

      • Bess says:

I agree. Normal Bill doesn’t seem to have the same relationship with Charlotte as he does with the two boys

      • Tessa says:

although Charlotte is younger than George, William holds HIS hand but lets Charlotte trail after them (in those flybe jet photos) and she is kept all the way on the other side from the family in that Group Photo of Charles family.

      • Carolind says:

Maybe Charlotte doesn’t want to hold William’s hand. There was quite a recent clip on TV or somewhere of them walking somewhere and it shows either William holding her hand and then her shrugging him off or William trying to take her hand and Charlotte not letting him.

    • Becks1 says:

Its interesting because it is something that is so covered up, because it destroys the image of the Cambridges being “hands on” and “normal,” and its funny to me because I think generally speaking, people wouldnt judge them for having lots of help, and most people probably assume the royals have tons of help.

My guess is there are at least two nannies, cooks (maybe one that is primarily for the kids and one for will and kate), there’s a housekeeper, probably a few other household staff for the cleaning etc, groundskeepers, and then of course the RPOs.

We know that a few years ago they had a housekeeper and groundskeeper who left after a few months because the Cambridges were so demanding and went back to their old jobs working for the queen at Sandringham lol.

  18. Merricat says:

Ponies, puppies, whatever–it’s a cheap parlor trick.

  19. Gillysirl says:

It must be killing William and Kate that the Sussexes rarely release any personal info, aren’t on social media, and still dominate the headlines. All these little promos the Cambridges are releasing just slide away.
And to think that they are the ones who started it all – leaking stories about Megan – and now they can’t control it. The tabloids have found the scent of money in Megan and Harry articles and the Cambridges can’t do a thing to come out on top.
    But they’re going to try!

  20. Mila says:

Lord, they are so desperate they always have to link it back to the Queen somehow, snooze, she’s their only show pony to get sympathy zzzZZ. And honestly I don’t know how it’s landing with Brexit is I don’t think they care either way they like the racism so it didn’t affect them. I think the only thing that affected them was the fact that other people are getting disillusioned with the monarchy. And I think William doesn’t have any hobbies his only hobby is anger and playing in rosebushes.

  21. Ennn says:

You’d think William would have drawn the line with the kids given how he felt about being used by his parents for PR…

    • Chrissy says:

No kidding. Yet again, it shows how shameless he is in that he doesn’t respect the kids’ privacy as well as showing how much of a hypocrite he is. He’s vile.

    • NotSoSimpleTaylor says:

Affairs can’t stay hidden without dangling something else out the window. It’s so pathetic, we had this story last spring too.

  22. NotSoSimpleTaylor says:

This is the kind of update a person gives when they have no legitimate clue what is going on with their kids. William has no clue. I doubt he even remembers releasing this story to the press 3x already. I think William holes himself up at Amner Hall while Kate oversees the kids being raised by Nanny Maria (while not doing any of the heavy lifting herself).

    • Saucy&Sassy says:

NotSoSimpleTaylor, I think W is hanging out at Sandringham, and not living at Anmer Hall with K and kids. It would be interesting to know how much time Keen spends with the kids, because she just doesn’t come across as a warm and fuzzy person. I really think the Nanny is raising the kids. Which is probably the best you can say for them. And, let’s not forget Ma Middleton’s infuence.

  23. Tessa says:

Soon there will be reports of George and Charlotte going on hunting trips. George already watched William shoot birds.

    • NotSoSimpleTaylor says:

That bothers me so much. We wonder why William is so messed up and I think learning to hunt at an early age plays a part. I hope Kate keeps George from hunting but I doubt it.

  24. Lemons says:

This isn’t an update considering they’ve been riding for one year now. What’s sad is that we never really hear about Louis and what he is up to. Do the Cambridge’s even remember they have a third child when crafting their “leaks” and press releases?

  25. Lizzie says:

Bill is thrilled huh? Because he was hoping to share that hobby with them, No. Because he is happy they are enjoying a new skill, No. Because their royal horse riding genes are coming through, Bingo.

  26. Cottage Cat says:

I still don’t get how people demonise Meghan yet have no problem wheeling out Kate’s common wife-beating, drugged-up, uncle.

  27. booboocita says:

Is it just me, or does poor Louis look a bit terrified in the header photos? There are PwBT and Ofwilliam with rictus grins, George with a semi-smile, Charlotte looking like she’s over all the public walking hoopla, and Louis with the scared side-eye. I don’t remember how old George was when the Terrible Two started trotting him out for photo ops, but I’m thinking Louis is a bit too young for the public walk. And if he’s not too young, it doesn’t look like he’s taking to it, anyways.
