Catherine Zeta-Jones is doing a guest arc as a doctor on Kaiser’s favorite hate-watch show, Prodigal Son. She did an interview with The Today Show from home to promote that and her side businesses. I have such a renewed appreciation of Catherine after watching her hour-long sales pitch for Casa Zeta-Jones makeup. The woman is haughty as hell as she owns it. Catherine and Michael Douglas have been married 22 years and have two children together, Dylan, 20, and Carys, who turns 18 next week. Catherine talked about them a lot on The Today Show and you could tell how much she adores and appreciates them. It was weird to me that she called herself an empty nester though when she still has a daughter at home! I guess Carys isn’t around much. Here’s some of what she said on The Today Show.
She has a connection to Michael Sheen
I wanted to work with [him] since I was very young. We were brought up in the same hometown and never met. We have mutual friends. To be able to do this with him was something that has been really great.On her long marriage to Michael Douglas
I can’t believe I’ve been married 20 years. I can’t believe I have a son in college and my daughter goes to college next year. We’re kind of empty nesters. He has a great gene pool that I joke to him constantly [about]. ‘I love you, but your genes are too good buddy, I don’t know what to say.’On if her kids want to join the business
The journey I’ve had as an actor has been extraordinary. I can only encourage them to do what they love. They’re both extremely bright and they’re both studying history and politics. They get all their brains from me. That said, Michael and I would be the first parents to say ‘no, maybe you should get another career,’ but we’ve seen how passionate they are about the craft. They know what celebrity is, they know the goods and bads, but they’re passionate about acting as a craft. They’ve done every theater camp… and held their own very well. I’m very excited to see whatever journey they’re happy to go on.

My son is also going to college next year, but he still lives with me. There’s no way I would call myself an empty nester while he’s still here. However I’m not looking forward to him leaving. I think that Catherine meant Carys is going to college later this year, since she’s turning 18 soon, but I could be wrong about the timeline. Catherine was trying to make Carys happen as a model a few years ago, and it was kind of disturbing. She was only 15 when they first started posing for magazine covers. I’m glad that not much came of that and that Carys is planning on college.
People are talking about this IG video Catherine did where she strutting in her huge walk-in closet. I’m kind of bummed that it’s not an open closet and that she’s only wearing two different outfits. She could dial it up a notch!

That’s great their kids are going to college and studying various things. I too thought she was going to push the daughter into the spotlight, but it sounds like they’re taking it slow and they’re getting an education and some experiences first.
I’m so happy these kids went to college, especially Carys. I remember CZJ trying to make that happen so hard. They are both regular looking (not bad, just regular) with regular talents and thankfully regular plans.
Does she still work in movies ?
I was having this conversation with a friend of mine this morning. For both of us, our youngest child is now a high school junior. We have about 18 months left with them at home full time (and for the last year, it has truly been full-time). In a lot ways, we are looking forward to the kids leaving home and venturing out on their own – no more getting up at the crack of dawn on a Saturday morning to drive to a swim meet or hockey tournament in another state!!! In other ways, we don’t have much time left with them – they will not be at the dinner table even the two or three days a week we get now. We are trying to make the most of what we have, before the nest empties for good.
I think CZJ is seeing the same writing on the wall that we are.
