Prince Charles ‘would fall in line’ over the DoE title if the Queen had a word

Official Pictures Of The Queen And The Prince of Wales

To me, it’s perfectly clear that Prince Charles has waited twenty years to punish his youngest brother by denying Prince Edward the “Duke of Edinburgh” title. Not only does Charles want to punish Edward, he wants Edward to know that he was the one who stuck the knife in Edward’s back. Charles wants the world to know! That’s why Charles is actively briefing against Edward to the Times and Daily Mail. Charles doesn’t care that he looks jealous, small, petty and petulant. Charles is getting his revenge and he’s letting it be known that this is what we should expect from his reign. And even the Queen can’t do anything about it:

The Queen and Prince Philip wanted their youngest son Prince Edward to be bestowed the title of Duke of Edinburgh once Prince Charles becomes king. They reportedly assured him ahead of his marriage to Sophie Rhys-Jones in 1999. Prince Charles inherited the title in April after his father’s death, and once he succeeds Her Majesty the title will automatically revert back to the crown.

Doubts have emerged in recent days about the Earl of Wessex being granted the title once Charles becomes king, with one expert suggesting the Queen may need to “have a word” with her eldest to ensure her and Philip’s will is respected.

Royal commentator Richard Kay was reported to have said: “My feeling is that if the Queen were to have a word in her son’s ear, then Charles would fall into line and Edward will get the title. He’s doing so much of the monarchical duties, he’s the head of the family effectively now, all the problems with Prince Harry, Prince Andrew uncertainty over his scandal. You’d have thought this wouldn’t have mattered but these things matter to the royals – they take these titles incredibly seriously.”

[From The News International]

Her Maj can talk at Charles all she wants, I don’t see him budging. It’s not up to her anyway, just like it wasn’t up to Philip either. There is also a “legitimate” or less petty reason for Charles to deny the DoE title to Edward: Charles genuinely wants to start limiting these kinds of titles to family members in an effort to “streamline” the monarchy. If Edward gets DoE, then his son James will inherit it and on and on. Meanwhile, Dickie Arbiter has a theory!

Now former Buckingham Palace press officer Dickie Arbiter has weighed in on the row. And he said Charles is simply waiting, and has no plans to defy his parents’ specific wishes.

“That Prince Edward will become The Duke of Edinburgh in the next reign was his father’s and is his mother’s wishes and Prince Charles won’t go against those,” he said. “It won’t happen immediately, but by 2029, when Edward turns 65, it will. Time for speculation, without substance, to cease.’

[From The Sun]

Lol, these people are really overestimating how Charles feels about his mother and father’s wishes. Again, the Queen can be as disappointed as she wants, but it’s still Charles’ title now. If the Queen is so mad, then she could give Edward a different ducal title – that’s in her authority. But if we’re hanging around for eight years for Charles to then decide to give Edward the DoE title… no, that’s not happening.

Lol, Dickie Arbiter, speaking from Balhalm Donkey Sanctuary, asking for “speculation without substance to cease.”

Where’s Vickie Arbiter to back him up?

    • Becks1 says:

Also remember he’s the one who insisted that Meghan and Harry were a brief fling, nothing more.

    • Nomegusta says:

      ‘Vickie Arbiter, L-I-A-R, Vickie Arbiter’

    • BabsORIG says:

i honestly don’t believe this is Charles leaking to the DM or Times or any of these other tabloids. I believe this is a co-ordinated campaign between KP and the Wessexes to apply pressure on Charles. I believe Charles maybe said something in regards to cutting the Wessexes off despite his “streamlined” team being short due to the Sussexes being gone. I think that got someone suspicious that he doesn’t plan to give Edward the title; so the Wessexes panicked and went on their Phillip mourning thing to show Charles that they can become an even bigger thorn in his backside if he cuts them off and even denies them the title. I think William is taken their side and i think they’re all pressuring Charles through the tabloids because there’s no reason why this title is being discussed at this time since the queen is still alive. i mean, it couldn’t have happened to a more deserving person since Charles is the king of pressurizing others but still…..

      • Liz says:

        @babsorig 100% agree.

      • Couch potato says:

Yeah, I think you’re right BabsORIG. The Wessexes are worried about their future and it wouldn’t surprise me if TOB in his crazy mind think he can pressure his father into skipping one generation. He’s probably seen the movie with that plot, and thinks this can be real. To hell with the extra taxes and what not.

      • Sid says:

I hope in this one instance Charles goes YOLO and does not give Edward the DoE title.

  2. Oy_Hey says:

Charles is ret to go on being the most unpopular king ever. Public feud with brother – doesn’t care. Going against his beloved Mum’s expressed wishes – doesn’t care. Elevating that mess Camilia to Queen Consort pissing off Kate and William – doesn’t care.

He’s been the FFK for decades and now that its finally happening he’s not letting that power go.

    • HeatherC says:

Kate should be happy that Camilla will be queen consort. Because if she is princess consort then it’s precedent to title Kate princess consort if PWT really wanted to be as petty as his dad.

      • Lori says:

I appreciate this comment Heather because its something I truly dont understand. Why do the ladies who marry in get to be called Queen consort, but men are Prince consort? Doesnt seem fair or particularly feminist either. To me the married in person should get a lower rank and consort never really gets said. Getting called Princess Catherine would already be a promotion would it not? Getting called King or Queen should really only be for the actual Monarch.

      • Mac says:

Philip was not born in the UK so he couldn’t take the title of king consort. Camilla will be queen consort. The silliness about princess consort was to appease everyone who hated Camilla when they got married. Kate will be upgraded to princess when William is invested as the prince of Wales.

      • Becks1 says:

@Lori – I think its because a king outranks a queen, so you can’t have a king consort, not really. I remember reading that years ago about why Philip was consort and not king, but someone with a better understanding of history can correct me (and I”m sure they will lol.)

      • lanne says:

It’s not about where Philip was born. There is simply no such thing as a King Consort. King outranks queen, so a spouse of a Queen Regnant cannot have a title that would place him above his spouse. Historically, the UK has been very suspicious of foreign born spouses of Queen regnants. They don’t want foreign born kings with supreme authority. It was one of the reasons why Mary 1 was so unpopular: her marriage to Philip of Spain threatened to make England a vassal state of Spain. Her sister Elizabeth 1 resisted marriage because she feared a spouse would have authority over her, and a foreign spouse would have made her already precarious position even more unstable. Victoria’s German husband Albert was named Prince consort to avoid the problem, so precedent was set for Phillip. Queen consort is acceptable because Queen is a lower rank than King. Even so, I don’t believe that making Camilla Princess Consort sets a precedent for Kate. Camilla is a second wife, while Kate is a 1st wife. For that reason alone, Kate will be Queen consort regardless of Camilla, and if the Cambridges ever do divorce, then any second wife of William would likely be one a princess consort if that’s what happens with Camilla. It’s what she has stated she wants—princess consort. Charles wants Queen.

      • AD says:

@ Lanne you seem to understand how this works maybe you can explain this. Will the Wessexes get more money if he get the title. I am not sure what the fuss is about really. It’s just a title for goodness sake! Nobody died.

      • Becks1 says:

@AD – nope, no money attached to the title. Just the title. But for these people, that means a lot.

    • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

Exactly. He’s getting close enough to “smell the blood in the water” so to speak, and the Petty Prince of Tampons has no shits left to give. He *knows* he’s pretty much controlling the joystick now, and he is going to make them ALL pay for ANY slight, real or imagined, to him and his Tipsy Tampon holder. He will really only have an “effective” reign for about 20-25 yrs if he’s VERY lucky, and he’s going to make up for all the decades of being the “Waity” One.

Oh man, can you IMAGINE the hissy-pissy fights that will be going on between him and TOBB over the next 20 yrs IF the monarchy doesn’t flame and burn??? Time to buy stock in popcorn and wine!

      • Snuffles says:

I know we joke that the Queen wants to be the last monarch. But the way Charles and William be acting a fool, and seeing that she seems to be in cahoots with Harry lately, I wouldn’t be surprised if she just told Harry to go ahead and burn it all down.

Don’t be surprised if Charles and William are taken out of the will when her personal fortune is dispersed.

    • GRUEY says:

@oh hey. He also know that the Monarchy won’t end in his lifetime so he can do whatever the fuck he wants. If he further damages the brand, so be it. Honestly, why would he give a fuck if Harry outs him and Camilla as active Klan members and describes how he took a wee on Diana’s grave? He’s going to be King and then die. So yeah, honestly I’m enjoying this little preview of his reign of petty vindictiveness because I do think that it will damage the Monarchy even further.

    • Lizzie says:

I don’t think anyone needs to elevate Camilla to QC, that will be her title automatically. Just like she is POW now.
I don’t know if there has ever been a divorced QC ?

      • Saucy&Sassy says:

Lizzie, does that matter now? I just don’t think that being divorced will be as a deciding factor. Too many royals have been divorced, so it seems foolish to go there.

  3. Becks1 says:

This is getting messy. If charles did intend to give it to Edward the way his parents intended, then why is this story even out there about Charles maybe wanting to use the title himself or maybe withholding it? Even using it for Louis doesn’t make sense, Louis is going to be the second son of a monarch, the closet he’ll be is third in line to the throne, and maybe even farther if George and/or Charlotte have children by that point (let’s say William becomes king in 25 years, that puts George at 33, and its not unlikely he has children by then.) and so then any children of Louis presumably will be pretty far down the line, so then you’re in the same position as Edward now, where someone who is pretty far down line inherits the title.

    • Mac says:

I tend to think Charles and William made a deal. Camilla gets queen consort and George gets duke of Edinburgh.

      • Becks1 says:

I think DoE makes more sense for George than for Louis, since i think William would want him to have an “important” title, but that’s only as long as Charles is king. When William becomes king, George becomes Duke of Cornwall, and further down the road he’ll be Prince of Wales (presumably), so the DoE title is just going to be kind of extra. but maybe that’s part of the plan?

      • Red Snapper says:

I think this story is a shiny object designed to distract from the Cambridge marriage. If the Queen wants Edward to have the title, he will.

      • MsIam says:

That’s my thought too, that they want the DofE title for George and then Louis could get the Cambridge title when he marries. It would make more sense than giving the Edinburgh title to Louis.

    • Kalana says:

They could save it for Charlotte’s future husband as well. I could see them not wanting her kids to go without titles. Or even figure out a way to change the rules so the title went to Charlotte.

      • Sofia says:

They’ll most likely offer Charlotte’s husband an Earldom and not a Dukedom. They did the same for Antony Armstrong Jones and Mark Philips and both married the daughters of a monarch.

      • Becks1 says:

That’s an interesting idea about giving it to Charlotte’s husband, and whether they would give him a title. Anne’s husband did not get a title and neither did either of York princesses. But William may feel differently if he’s king when Charlotte gets married.

      • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

Becks, Anne’s husband was *offered* a title, but turned it down. That’s why Peter and Zara do not have titles. I’m not sure if Anne’s 2nd husband was offered one; I don’t think so (no kids to consider).

I could’ve sworn I heard talk about Jack, but I think Charles put the kibosh on that, because of his “slimmed down monarchy”, and of course, mostly because he knew it’d stick it to Pedo where it’d bother him the most.

      • Wadsworth the Butler says:

Charlotte’s husband would only receive a Dukedom in the unlikely event that she ascends to the throne. Margaret’s husband was not offered one, nor was Anne’s.

      • Becks1 says:

@TheOG – right, he was offered but turned it down, so that set a precedent IMO for other royal women, especially as Anne was the daughter of the monarch at the time (and her children are the oldest grandchildren.)

There were rumors about Jack getting a title but personally I just thought that came from Andrew. I think if Andrew had pushed, the Queen would have given him one but I think Charles shut down that talk fast.

      • CourtneyB says:

@wadsworth Margaret’s husband was not only offered one, he took it and became the Earl Snowden. Mark Phillips and Anne declined so they could have a more normal life. The next set of princesses were Beatrice and Eugene and there was no offer. But they weren’t a monarch’s daughter unlike Margaret and Anne either.

      • NotSoSimpleTaylor says:

I think there will be a push for Charlotte and Jacques to marry. Albert wants it baaaad.

      • Kalana says:

A Grimaldi would never be allowed near the BRF. And aren’t the Grimaldis Catholic? Charlotte will probably marry some posh Hooray Henry and live on an estate that her parents gift her or a property on one of the royal estates. Jacques will marry like his Casiraghi cousins.

Also Kate and William do love their children. Seeing Charlene’s unhappiness these last ten years, who would want their kid to marry into Albert’s family?

      • Maria says:

The Grimaldis probably aren’t an option but the royals can marry Catholics now – it’s just that the British monarch cannot be Catholic themselves.

    • Becks1 says:

Damn it sorry I just should have said troll lol.

  4. Mac says:

This family is so petty, Although it seems weird to me that Edward is desperate for a title that is literally just a title. No power, land, or wealth come with it. Is it just snobbishness?

    • Jais says:

They are really petty! Even Kay says you’d think these things don’t matter but the royals take these titles very seriously. Like I can almost see his eye roll in those words lol.
What I think is interesting is they say the Queen could have a word about this with Charles. These petty articles have been in the news for a week and still going and she hasn’t said a word to him yet. Honestly wonder if the queen is just over this petty bullsh*t and no longer cares what these fools do.

  5. Ariel says:

Besides the Queen and Phillip’s terrible parenting of their spoiled children, and all of the AARP “children” being awful in their own special ways, is there a specific reason Charles wants to punish Edward?
Or is it just general royal sibling sniping stuff?

    • Mac says:

IIRC, Edward’s production company was filming William at St. Andrews without his consent and in violation of the privacy agreement with the press. And then there is Sophie getting caught trading on her title and gossiping about the BRF.

      • Amy Bee says:

@Mac: According to the BBC documentary “Reinventing the Royals” Edward’s film company didn’t film William at St Andrew’s. The story was planted in the press to force Edward to give up his career.

      • Mac says:

Oh! I didn’t know that. These people are the worst!

      • Agreatreckoning says:

Sophie gossiping and trading on her title would be problematic. We don’t really know what Charles wants to do and won’t know until he’s in a position to do something. The Guardian has this story from 2002 about Edward & his Ardent Productions company.

For some reason, this part made me giggle and was a little surprising.

” There were even signs that the company’s output in general might be becoming more substantial: in 2000 a grainy, extremely unexpected Ardent documentary on sex and the disabled called Forbidden Pleasures was broadcast to some acclaim on Channel 4.”

  6. Amy Bee says:

Kaiser is spot on. The decision has been made and there’s nothing the Queen can do about. The title is Charles’s to do what he likes and he will not give it to Edward.

    • Over it says:

Exactly, plus the children with a half black mama aren’t getting a title, so who gives a flying f if Eddie doesn’t get one?

    • anance says:

They are trying to blame the Queen. “If she would only tell Charles to give DoE to Edward, everything would be fine.”

We know that’s not true. It’s just spin to move the narrative over to the Queen who is probably thinking of shortening her skirts, getting a new hair style, and adding veneers.

Really, it’s obvious what she’s into now. Wouldn’t be surprised if a platonic companion shows soon.

      • Christine says:

anance, I am waiting for her to show up in something that does not resemble an Easter egg color. I feel like this is exactly her level of push back.

  7. Lizzie says:

Earlier I read a comment that Charles could put DoE in abeyance and reserve for the next husband of a monarch. I think this would be the best solution and a nice tribute to his father.
Also, why would anyone care if Edward in his 150 room mansion Bagshot Park gets a title upgrade? The Earl of Entitlement has been given a very cushy life, he can continue working for the queen and Charles as an Earl.
Also I would love to know what Charles has been mad about, was is when Sophie shot her mouth off to a reporter pretending to be a customer of her business?

    • Mika says:

Ok but… if they put the title in abeyance, who is going to give out the Duke of Edinburgh award to students in the Commonwealth? Unless they’re getting rid of the Duke of Ed in schools? Is that a good look for the continued relevance of the monarchy?

    • aftershocks says:

      @Lizzie said:
“Earlier I read a comment that Charles could put DoE in abeyance and reserve for the next husband of a monarch. I think this would be the best solution and a nice tribute to his father.”

Such a scenario will take a long time to occur, as the next two heirs after Charles are male. The soonest opportunity for the husband of a female monarch to receive the DoE title would be if George’s oldest child is female. And even then, the monarchy might not be in existence by that point.

The best tribute Charles could give to his father would be to honor Philip’s expressed wishes for the DoE title to be given to Edward once Charles takes the throne. This is the option desired by QE-II and Philip, despite the title ultimately falling further away from the crown and HRH status, as it gets passed down Edward’s line of male descendants.

  8. Snuffles says:

And yet they keep saying Harry is the one holding long term petty grudges that he can’t let go of.

  9. Amy Bee says:

@Fen: I’m definitely not upset about it. Archie and Lili are going to grow up as Americans so the call for titles is now moot.

    • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

No, no!! According to Joey Tribiani: “Yeah, it’s like a cow’s opinion, you know, it just doesn’t matter. It’s “moo”.” 😄

  10. Lila says:

No, not really because the situations are not the same. If Charles wanted to change a hundred year old convention to keep his brother from receiving a title he’s entitled to, then that would be what’s happening to Harry’s kids. The Queen never kept Edward from getting a Dukedom. He’s the one who wanted to be Earl of Wessex.

When it came to Archie, the family said he would not be a prince and they also wanted to keep him from being one when Charles becomes King.

  11. Chaine says:

Beyond all the other stupidity of this whole brotherly feud, it sucks that Edward will pass whatever titles on to his son, rather than his firstborn child who happens to be a daughter. It’s just gross.

    • Jais says:

      Agree. It’s gross.

    • Christine says:

How is this possible? Did Elizabeth’s proclamation that firstborn daughters can inherit the monarchy (after George was born, rendering it moot) not extend to the lesser titles?

      • Amanda says:

That’s correct, it primarily affected Charlotte, in the order of succession to the throne. Nothing has changed with regard to male primogeniture otherwise.

      • aftershocks says:

No, @Christine, the Queen did not make any proclamation regarding females being able to inherit the throne! That has always been possible, as long as there were no males available to inherit in precedence to females.

The LP the Queen signed prior to George’s birth involved ensuring the first born, whether male or female, would be first in line to the throne. Previously, if the first born was a girl, she would be skipped over if any younger siblings were male.

In addition, the 2013 LP signed by the Queen ensured that all of William’s kids would be HRH Prince/ Princess at birth. If this LP had not been created and signed, Charlotte and Louis would be known as Lady and Lord, until Charles became king, at which point they would gain HRH Prince/ Princess style and title.

      • aftershocks says:

Oh @Christine, please excuse my previous reply as I misread your comment. We said the same thing. I only elaborated a bit further. Sorry.

  12. Pinellas Pixie says:

What is upsetting about Harry’s children not getting titles is the fact that Charles is trying to change the rules to make sure that doesn’t happen. If it were already the rule that his children did not have that birthright, it wouldn’t be a big deal. For Charles to say that it would be changed so that Archie and Lili do not get what is rightfully theirs is upsetting to any fair-minded person, yes.

    • Lizzie says:

As I understand it there is a bit of a catch 22 here, As things stand Archie and LIli will become HRH’s the minute Charles becomes king – as grandchildren (in the male line) of a monarch. Charles can only change how this is done (letters of patent?) after he becomes king.
If all of this is accurate then Charles would need to convince the queen to make changes so they are in effect when she dies/he becomes king.

      • Feeshalori says:

Yes, the queen has to issue that LP if Charles has no intention of the children becoming prince/princess the minute he ascends the throne. Otherwise he has to issue his own LP to revoke those titles, making him the petty one. My money is on the queen doing nothing and dumping this in Charles’ lap after she ascends to that great jewel vault in the sky.

      • Lizzie says:

You are always safe putting money on the queen doing nothing :)

    • Sid says:

I am willing to bet money that Archie and Lili will be HRH Prince and HRH Princess when the time comes. Once Meghan revealed the BRF’s racist intention to deny any Sussex children their birthright, it became a third rail that Charles will not want to touch. Try explaining to the mostly-POC Commonwealth why you are changing the rules only now that there are royal children with a Black grandmother.

  13. Over it says:

Archie and lili the biracial grandchildren are being denied theirs, so I really don’t care if Eddie the gentle doesn’t get his, I stand with Charles on this pettiness. I fact why don’t we give them the titles of Edward and sophie the duke and duchess of chocolate

  14. Rapunzel says:

This… seems like Charles plans to not give Ed the title and he’s blaming his mom. So not only is he taking back Phil’s wedding gift to Eddie, but also throwing his mom under the bus about it? When Phil’s body is barely cold?

    Stay classy, tampon boy.

  15. Aurora says:

I’m curious. What did Edward do to Charles to cause Charles to seek revenge?

    • Jennifer says:

Existed? Charles doesn’t like too many people and not too many people like him.

Also supposedly everyone else but him got treated better by daddy-o than Charles did.

    • Maria says:

      Edward was Philip’s favorite.

      • Ariel says:

Anne was Phillip’s favorite they say. But Charles seems to have definitely been both of his parents least favorite, which stinks for any kid.

      • Maria says:

The Crown says that about Anne but it’s untrue. Philip was present at Edward’s birth and he always supported Edward more than his other children. He was disappointed when Edward wanted to drop out of the Royal Marines but ultimately backed his decision (that would have never happened with Charles). Edward’s portrait was the only one of his children in Philip’s private study.
Philip and Anne got on well but Philip treated her almost the same as Charles. She was just tougher and gave it back to him so he respected that.

    • Christine says:

As far as I can tell, none of the Queen’s children are particularly fond of each other, they tolerate each other, to degrees.

  16. Abena Asantewaa says:

This is a very disloyal family, with contrived lives, they really hate each other. Thank God Harry left

  17. Likeyoucare says:

    Well good job charles.
Stop giving title to your siblings or relatives, take back from andrew too.
After the queen die, write your own letter pattern that only george will be given a title. Take back the princess and prince title from louise and charlote too.
Tell your grandchildren that after 18 years old they need to support themselves and their protection will be revoke.
    Be fair charles.

  18. GR says:

Does anyone know why Chas seems to be so angry at Ed?

  19. Lady Digby says:

Supposedly Queen loves Andrew the best whilst Philip favoured Edward.

  20. RoyalBlue says:

what’s the source of discontent between charles and edward.

  21. Julia K says:

The Duke of E title is not about passing it to Edward. It is about James who will inherit the title from his father. There are those who do not want Edwards’ boy to be a duke.

  22. lee says:

A streamlined monarchy. Give me a break. Europe is full of penniless nobles with grand titles. Its not like the Queens first cousins who have Prince titles are taking away the spotlight from the Queen or breaking her with the bank. Charles can easily give the Wessex family the title and restrict the funds. Its all about control and keeping people in line.

    • Christine says:

Thank Christ someone said this. Seriously, they are talking in tones that suggest they are inches from the poor house, while complaining constantly that Harry and Meghan left, leaving a gaping hole in the workforce. Poor, poor Wills and Chuck, whoever will come to their aide?? I’m on pins and needles.

Yes, you have a gaping hole, but that’s because the royals treat each other like garbage, it’s got nothing to do with your titles.

  23. SueBarbri says:

I think all this talk of titles (Camilla as Queen vs. Princess Consort/ D of E) and who is going to be where on the balcony seems trite to all of us, but it must be a huge deal inside the palace. I think the RF rarely see each other, but when they do there must be all sorts of posturing and anger between the family members about places and curtseying and titles and all of this. It’s basically all they have.

    • Lizzie says:

Their sense of entitlement know no bounds regardless if the country is still in the midst of a pandemic. They should hang their heads in shame.

      • SueBarbri says:

Exactly. And now, there’s a new article up on the DM all about how Louise will be entitled to be styled as a princess when she turns 18. There’s an incredible video of the poor teenager and her mother “walking down a high street” and it’s clear that it’s all staged. Horribly awkward. What are they trying to do? They are pushing this poor, sheltered girl out in front of the cameras, and she looks terrified. This is the same old desperate playbook Fergie and Andrew used for the York girls, but B&E at least seemed to want the attention. Shame on Sophie.

  24. Kalana says:

So Charles disrespecting Philip’s wishes is not going to negatively affect the Queen, but Harry and Meghan doing anything at all is the real trouble?
