Britney Spears responds to sister Jamie Lynn: ‘She wants to sell a book at my expense’

Jamie Lynn Spears has been promoting her new memoir, which is called Things I Should Have Said. It was originally titled I Must Confess: Family, Fame, and Figuring it Out, but she changed it after backlash for using a line from her sister Britney’s lyrics. Jamie Lynn has seemed unprepared to answer questions about Britney’s forced conservatorship and comes across as defensive. In an interview with Good Morning America, Jamie Lynn claimed that she tried to help Britney, but that Britney didn’t take the steps to end the conservatorship after she reached out. Britney has previously stated that Jamie Lynn did not try to help her and that she sees her sister as complicit. Following her sister’s GMA interview, Britney released a long statement on Twitter putting Jamie Lynn on blast. She used a lot of emojis and it reads like a friend texting her thoughts. Here’s some of what she wrote [via Huffington Post] and you can see the statement below. Unfortunately Britney is sick with a high fever, but is feeling a little better with some Aleve.

Britney Spears slammed Jamie Lynn Spears in a lengthy Twitter statement Thursday, accusing her younger sister of trying to sell a book at her expense.

The pop star said she watched Jamie Lynn’s “Good Morning America” interview and was bothered by the comment that her behavior was out of control.

“[Jamie Lynn] was never around me much 15 years ago at that time,” Britney said. “So why are they even talking about that unless she wants to sell a book at my expense?”

Addressing an alleged rift between the sisters, Jamie Lynn told the talk show that she had “only ever loved and supported” Britney, “so I don’t know why we’re in this position right now.”

She was apparently referring to Britney’s unhappy reaction after Jamie Lynn performed a medley of remixed Britney songs at the 2017 Radio Disney Awards.

“I know it may sound like a silly thing to most people but I wrote a lot of my songs and my sister was the baby,” Britney said in her statement. “She never had to work for anything. Everything was always given to her!!!!”

[From Huffington Post]

I hope Britney is ok and that she feels better soon! If she has covid she’ll hopefully be fine. We know she’s vaccinated because she posted photos to Instagram.

As for Jamie Lynn, she’s always seemed like a little brat when it comes to her sister. From performing her sisters’ songs to bragging that she stays at the Ritz instead of her sister’s condo in Florida, she just seems rude. I understand that her family is massively dysfunctional and that she was just a teen mom when her sister was put under a conservatorship. She’s 30 now and a grown woman. At the very least she should have more diplomatic answers to these questions about her sister. Jamie Lynn sounded like she was blaming Britney for the conservatorship. At least Britney is out of it now and can respond to her family, but she’s lost so much over the years. I hope she sues the crap out of her father.

Her book has already leaked on reddit. So good luck with those sales. From what I gleamed from comments (i’m not downloading that BS of a book) its just a lot of Britney is erratic with no real reasons or explanations. And Britney said she looked like a grandma in a dress. Oh boo hoo.

She’s profiting off her sister even if she is a minor part of the book. Since the only reason people will buy it is for Britney tea. JLS you are not relevant just accept it.

    • Margo Smith says:

Jamie lynn probably did look like a grandma though….

      • petee says:

I remember her as the little girl that yelled at the press to leave her sister alone. She was super protective of Britney as a child.

    • why says:

definitely not as minor as she claimed. her book mention britney a total of 280 times when that book is only 240 pages.
      lmao
and that’s not including ‘my sister’

  2. Bettyrose says:

Jamie Lynn cashing checks at bank of Britney, just like the rest of ‘em.

  3. Margo Smith says:

I never liked Jamie Lynn. I always thought that she got pregnant at 16 so she could be “famous” like Britney. I’d be furious with my sister if she kept going to the press and was trying to sell a damn book that’s likely 90% about me.

    • Arizona says:

She was headlining a show on Nickelodeon when she got pregnant, after being on All That. because she got pregnant, her show got cancelled and she basically hasn’t had a career since.

she certainly got her opportunities because of Britney and has been clutching to Britney’s coattails since, but she didn’t get pregnant to be famous like Britney – she was already becoming famous, and getting pregnant derailed it. turns out they didn’t want a pregnant teen headlining their teen show.

      • Roo says:

I read somewhere that it was an adult at the studio that impregnated her, someone who is known to have sexually assaulted other children working at the studio. If that is true, Jamie Lynn has her own trauma to deal with. Those parents did a terrible job protecting their kids.

      • Lumpy says:

Rumors say it’s Dan Scheinder. If you want to make yourself sick, do a deep dive in to all the rumors about him. The fact that no one has come forward about him is disturbing

      • Thank you @lumpy for bringing up Dan Schenider. When the hell is that man’s me too moment going to come? And how about Brian Freaking Singer? There are still so many stories in Hollywood that are sneaking around in the half light. I wish someone would shine a full klieg light on it all. C’mon Ronan Farrow!

      • Erin says:

That sounds horrific and I wouldn’t doubt if JL had been abused working for someone that sounds like a complete garbage POS human. It’s depressing to continue to read about men in the industry like this, they all sound a like and why do they have so many covering for them and keep getting jobs?! I hate it. Anyway, have you seen her daughter Maddie though? She looks just like her dad Casey, I remember thinking that years ago even.

  4. superashes says:

Here is the video of the performance:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3Mz-Sj0Lh8

Me personally, I think Britney seemed excited at first, but then her expression sort of changes to forced smiling after she stands up, but maybe it is just me. The hug between her and JL at the end was massively awkward.

Almost like she wanted to cheer, and then it sort of dawned on her after the first rush of excitement that this was a betrayal, but then realizing the cameras were on. Or alternatively, she was excited, then Jamie Lynn started to actually sing, and then she was like “ooh this performance is really not that great”.

    • Digital Unicorn says:

OMG that was AWFUL – JL is a really bad performer and this was an overall bad performance. Brit looked horrified and it also looked like she knew NOTHING about this and was put in a position where she was expected to jump up and down and cheer for JL.

The fact that Brit seemed happier to greet the other performers over JL says a lot. It was clearly a performance aimed at promoting JL and NOT about Britney. I’d be pissed as well.

      • BothSidesNow says:

Yes! Britney is certainly more loving to all of the performers except JL!!

JL is solely using her sister to sell books. If Britney was still under conservatorship, JL would have waited to release her book.

As for JL, as I mentioned the other day, I have NO idea why she has written a book except to monetize from her sister. Without Britney, JL would have not have had a career in performing. JL’s book is not relevant to or for anyone but herself.

    • Tessa says:

This is what the big deal is all about? How is this a betrayal? Because she performed 30 seconds of 1 song? This seems like a reach…

      • Kitten says:

I mean, she explains it on Twitter but seriously, it’s not hard to understand. She clearly has a strained relationship with JL, likely because Brit was always the work horse who was made to absorb all the pressure and stress while JL rode her sister’s fame to relative success, while being insulated from the worst criticisms and unending expectations that Brit endured.

So yeah given that, you can see why Brit’s little sister putting on a performance that’s akin to a Vegas Britney impersonator using a disco version of Britney’s original song would be insulting at best and deeply hurtful at worst. I’m sure that performance just reminded Britney of the shitty, dysfunctional dynamic that has always existed in their family.

      • HeyJude says:

        Hi Lynne or Jamie!

No, the betrayal was more about taking money from Britney’s estate while she was actively being held captive by her father via the conservatorship. And being a grown ass woman but not recognizing the conservatorship was wrong and being used for abuse, and not then sounding the alarm by speaking out to help her sister or trying to aid in the effort to end that abusive arrangement. All while Jamie Lynn used Britney’s money and properties happily.

THAT’s the betrayal, dear. Actually not just betrayal, that’s textbook abuse. Emotional and financial abuse.

Jamie Lynn can now have fun joining Papa Joe Jackson Spears at the trailer park while Britney lives happily ever after in a big mansion in Calabasas and cashes her millions in residuals for herself.

  5. Merricat says:

I guess being cut off from the lavish lifestyle that Britney funded is cutting into J.L.’s stays at the Ritz. Maybe she should downgrade to Holiday Inn.

    • BothSidesNow says:

@ Merricat, you are always spot on in wording the exact sentiment!!

Maybe you should have lived within your own income JL, instead of your sister that you have mooched off of your entire life. I am certain that the Holiday Inn has a lovely breakfast spread in the lobby!!

  6. JayNay says:

ugh this is so sad… seems to me that both Britney and Jamie Lynn suffered mistreatment from their parents. It’s possible that Jamie is both a victim of that dysfunktional dymanic and, at the same time, did very little to help her sister later on. That conversatorship was just pure abuse and I’m so glad Britney is free from it now.

    • STRIPE says:

Yes this. Also JL was **allegedly** impregnated by an adult at her tv show when she was 16. She was becoming a 17 year old, rape victim mother when all this went down – I think people are potentially underestimating how much she was dealing with on her own at the time and in the years after.

Could she have done more in her late 20s? Of course. But, idk….it just seems to me that she is not the most deserving of this anger given everything we know about her family dynamics.

That being said, who knows if B would be lashing out at all had JL not been on this book tour talking about it all? And further, Britney is finally able to release her emotions and express herself after all this abuse, so it’s reasonable to expect some shrapnel to hit people in the periphery.

Like you say, it’s a sad situation all around.

      • Tourmaline says:

Can people stop with the claiming that Jamie Lynn’s daughter’s father is not Casey? Please take a quick look at a picture of Maddie and Casey side by side. There is a STRONG resemblance. There’s enough to snark on re Jamie Lynn, without this bizarre conspiracy theory.

      • Otaku fairy says:

@Tourmaline: This. That rumor about the daughter is so far nothing but an internet conspiracy theory. Unless and until Jamie Lynn says otherwise, I believe her about the father of her child. Just the fact that that rumor has followed her for years, and may continue to follow her for the rest of her life can be traumatic in and of itself, even if Dan Schneider hasn’t done anything to her.
Either way, this whole situation is…a lot. I’m concerned about both sisters for different reasons at this point.

  7. Lizzie Bathory says:

Britney was the talent & cash cow for that whole family for years & was then deprived of her liberty so they could continue to control her (& profit from doing so). Jamie Lynn was young when all that started, but she seems to have internalized the family dynamic that Britney was there to be exploited for the benefit of the family. And I don’t think Jamie Lynn is used to Britney being able to use her own voice publicly. Britney isn’t perfect, but I get the sense that she’s learned hard lessons her sister hasn’t.

  8. Mich says:

The utter gall of saying it was Britney’s fault for not ending the conservatorship.

    • BothSidesNow says:

Yes, when her own parents were the ones profiting from Britney as well as JL was!! She couldn’t lose her windfall OR have the balls to stand up to her parents!!!

  9. Cat C says:

She’s right, JL has gotten everything off of her hard work, including her show. I’d be pissed, too. I hope she sues the whole damn family and wins. What a tragedy.

    • Digital Unicorn says:

I think that JL might lose her part on that show, which wasn’t very big to begin with, esp if the backlash gets bigger.

JL should have just kept her mouth shut but no, being the coat tail grifter she is she saw an opportunity to play the victim in the hopes that it will help whatever she calls a career.

      • BothSidesNow says:

Yes!!! Why is she using her sister again? She’s a grown ass woman so she should be standing on her own two feet with regards to her income. Stop living OFF a of your sister and get a job, FFS!! Just like the rest of us JL!!!

      • Jan90067 says:

I tried watching that Netflix show, “Sweet Magnolias”, and even though JL doesn’t have a big part, she is enough to ruin it every time she has screen time. We’re talking about having to *improve* to get to *bad*. The rest of the cast is pretty talented; man she just sucks the life out of the scenes.

I hope Brit can attach any and all monies made from this book when she sues them all to get her money back. Sadly, that’s all she can get from them at this point; she’ll never get back those 13 yrs. Did she need help? Of course. Does she *still* need people looking out for her? Seems like she always will. I just hope there will be legal measures put in place so this never happens to her again.

  10. Kaye says:

Who knew Jamie Lynn has shoulders like a linebacker? She needs to rethink her outfits for book tour.

    • Digital Unicorn says:

I read on the post yesterday that the suit was Lou Taylors – it looks too big for JL.

  11. Hmm says:

I’m so split on this. On the one hand Britney has clearly been severely mistreated by her family to a degree that is almost criminal, on the other hand, it is clear from her posts that she is still quite mentally ill (definitely not enough to be under a conservatorship, but enough to not be 100% in her right mind, which may make her commentary a bit unreliable).

    • aggie says:

People with mental illness (a large portion of the population) are entirely capable of seeing when they are being mistreated or exploited. What exactly is questionable about what Britney is saying?

    • STRIPE says:

I understand what you mean about her social media posts but by my understanding, Britney was never the smartest or most articulate person in the world – combine that with the emotional energy of someone who hadn’t been able to exercise any freedom in almost 15 years? That, to me, could explain the posts just as easily as mania.

      • Rose says:

There’s also a valid question to be asked given what we’ve seen to date about who is posting when. If there’s anything the Duchess of Sussex, Angelina Jolie and Britney have taught me it’s ask who benefits from this narrative and can you be sure of the speaker.

  12. WithTheAmerican says:

JL needs a lot of therapy. She would be no one without her sister and I’m sorry, but as an artist if your own sister steals your work to embiggen themselves, that is a betrayal.

JL is high on her own supply. Hope her “book” tanks.

  13. Meime says:

I have such a hard time criticizing JL because she was a victim of their parents also and has dealt with a lot of trauma in her own life, and it’s possible that her trauma response was fawning and overly trying to be please her parents by being the “easier” one. She has admitted they tried to force her into an abortion that she did not want. She got pregnant at 16, which can be traumatic in itself, and if the rumors of who got her pregnant are true, well…. I’m not saying Britney should forgive her or have her in her life, but as an outsider I just can’t bring myself to hate on JL.

    • STRIPE says:

I’m glad you said so because I tend to agree. Obviously we don’t know the whole story but I just find it hard to believe that JL truly is such a big-bad in Britney’s life. Maybe she could have done more to help and B is lashing out because of that?

Also, and I say this from first hand family experience, when a member of your family is mentally unwell it cascades into the rest of the family. JL no doubt has been through some stuff because of B’s illness. And, again in my personal experience, the person suffering mental illness is not always a reliable narrator of their experience when they are unwell or in the time leading up to or following an episode. Whether it because of literal delusions or trying to downplay the impact that their episode had…

I just see B lashing out a lot right now, which I totally understand of course – but I am taking some of it with a grain of salt.

      • NightOwl says:

@Stripe not sure it has ever been “proven” that Britney had any mental illness. It has often been asserted by her family that she was unwell as a reason for the conservatorship and hasn’t that been proven to be iffy at best at this point? The narrative has stuck unfortunately.

      • STRIPE says:

@nightowl that is a really fantastic point. I’m not sure she has ever said “I am bipolar” or whatever diagnosis she has (or to your point, doesn’t have!)

I will say that what I saw in her was someone who was having a manic episodes. I’m no doctor but I have a family member who is bipolar so I can identify mania at a bare minimum.

To be clear I don’t think that anything she did necessitated a conservatorship regardless- but I saw mental health issues so I believe she does have some.

      • Karisma says:

        @stripe
I agree. I find people incredible harsh with JL and I don’t even like the girl. From what I can see it’s clear britney still got issues I wish her the best but I think she needs the time to heal and far away from social media will be the best way to do it

      • KFG says:

Brit is mad bc JL is continuing to use her name to make money. Brittany shouldn’t have had a conservatorship that was basically a legal guardianship removing all of her autonomy. She has bipolar, big whoop, it’s a very manageable disorder. Brits family exploited her and stole her money and made it impossible for her to really see her children or live. JL participated in that bc she definitely couldn’t support herself without Brits money. She’s cut off and needs to sell this book to try to pay for her life. Brit has every right to be pissed and to call JL out.

      • Serena says:

If JL had just kept her mouth shout, or better said something supportive to her sister instead of being snarky and plainly rude, people wouldn’t be so harsh.

And honestly, we don’t know if Britney suffers from ANY mental illness and I’m sick of people saying she is based on her ig posts. She’s free after 13years, let the woman live and post whatever she wants without judging.

    • goofpuff says:

I think we’d be alot less harsh if JL would be alot less of a jerk. She is still trying to profit off her sister. She doesn’t get a pass on continually abusing her sister.

  14. lucy2 says:

    No lies detected from Britney.

  15. Bobbie says:

I don’t blame Britney for calling her family out. I went through a depression during the pandemic and my family was noticeably MIA. And they knew I wasn’t doing well. She needed emotional support they couldn’t or wouldn’t provide.

  16. Me says:

I’m here for scorched earth Britney

  17. Ashton says:

If she truly cared about her sister she would stop talking about her and stop trying to make money off her sister’s name. That whole family used and abused Britney. They liked her locked up with no say in anything, they wanted the public to think she’s crazy, that way they could spend her money. Every one of them were living the easy life living off of Britney. I don’t believe her poor me act at all.

  18. Mimi says:

She’s only doing this cause the gravy train is ever so minus we’ll do a interview and write a book for profit! Cause these charities don’t want the $$! JL is so horrible for doing this. She hasn’t had to work for shit in her life she’s just lucky she’s Britney’s lil sis and has had everything handed to her. Please no one purchase this “book” you’d just be supporting #trash

  19. jferber says:

Poor Britney. I can see the hurt and anger in her face. Her whole family betrayed her and disabled her to get all her material possessions. So sickening. I think she needs to get back everything stolen that is tangible and cut ties with her mother, father and sister (if she hasn’t already done so.

  20. blunt talker says:

These two sisters need to stay out of the public orbit with their feud-go to court to settle all greivances-neither are perfect people—I think more revalations will come out that won’t be pretty for either of them-there are a lot of people in the background waiting to cash in and they are not Britney’s blood family-they all need to talk like grown-ups and make their positions very clear instead of using the public forum.

  21. Yep says:

The dad stepped in in 2008 or whatever it was because Britney was clearly a danger to herself (see news stories from back then) and perhaps even to her boys. He did a good job for a while, esp with getting her finances back in the black, and then perhaps it became a very convenient thing for everyone in the family to leech off. Everyone in the system involved in her “care” would have had an interest in her conservatorship continuing, rather than switching up the status quo and finding alternatives to drugging her, etc. There’s no doubt something had to be done in 2008 and she was super vulnerable to predators like that Sam Lufti for a while, even a few years after the C’ship started.
Judging from her IG, I think she should still continue getting professional help mentally but that’s miles away from saying the conservatorship shouldn’t have been lifted. It went on for too long and was too convenient for everyone involved.
As for this, Britney is right to slap back in public as her sister went there first. Just stop airing your dirty laundry. If she were acting in Britney’s best interests, she’d decline to write or speak about her publicly.

    • albalilium says:

That’s what i think. She clearly needs professional help and needs to surround herself with people that will support her in doing so. I don’t think this guy she is with has her best interest in mind, more his interest. And i don’t think it will end good for her if he ever leaves her or uses her for money.

      • Yep says:

I also think her current bf/fiance is motivated by self-interest. I just hope Britney gets healthy mentally eventually. She has to want it and has to do the work to get there; no one else can do it for her. Judging from her social media and from what I’ve read, she seems to have bipolar, dissociative (multiple personality), and histronic personality disorders. She is hypersexual, addicted to having a boyfriend, and very childish. Can’t imagine what it’s like to grow up in front of the world and have people objectifying you like that when you’re 14 or whatever she was. Some credit has to go to her dad for making sure her sons and Britney are financially secure for life anyway.

  22. jwoolman says:

Britney’s behavior was not consistent with “just bipolar” and her statements today raise many red flags for me. I remember the behavior that led to the conservatorship in the first place quite well. Her diagnosis must be far more complicated that “just bipolar” and if my suspicions are correct, not so easily treated with drug therapy.

There may have been issues with the conservatorship especially if it was not properly monitored by the court (originally a lot of safeguards were built in). Anyway, it always makes sense to reassess especially with someone so relatively young. And I can also see that her dad has changed over the years and so it would be best to shift away from him.

Whatever, it was a matter for the court to decide because she definitely was in sad shape originally. No need to rewrite history and say it wasn’t so bad. When children’s safety is involved (and it definitely was), it’s different than when someone is just by themselves. The situation is different now, her kids are old enough to deal with any problems of that sort if they arise. They have phones and know who to call…

No matter how you feel about Jamie Lynn, she is simply too young to have had much involvement in the conservatorship. She is at least 9 years younger than Britney. She was pregnant at 16 and dealing with the pregnancy and then its aftermath for her life. She was a teenager and a teen mom when the conservatorship started. I saw no indication that Jamie Lynn was in any position to do much of anything for much of the conservatorship. She had her own problems to deal with.

I always thought it was sad that Jamie Lynn’s mother pushed her into acting and singing, going too far with Jamie Lynn’s obvious admiration of her sister. I always thought Jamie Lynn was pretty bad at the things she was pushed into (and not really enjoying them so much, she wasn’t self-driven like the teenage Britney). Jamie Lynn just didn’t have her sister’s talent and was getting jobs as a child because of her name and considerable physical resemblance to Britney. The poor girl was even bad at commercials. I can’t judge her singing now because I haven’t kept up with her. But I do wish she had traveled a different path based on her own strengths rather than trying to be like her sister.

I also can’t understand having a glass of wine as a symbol of “freedom”. My brother was bipolar and alcohol was advised against because of meds he was taking. Another person in my family with a different disorder had to go teetotaler for the same reason – alcohol conflicted with meds. This is not uncommon and the same situation could easily be true for Britney. She is interpreting every restriction as a sign of oppression and exploitation, which to me is worrisome. She sounds so much like a teenager herself now.

    • Saucy&Sassy says:

Jwoolman, hmmm..you know, if someone took over control of my entire life for 13 years at such a young age, I wonder how much I would mature during that time? I suspect there would be arrested development, but I’m not a psychologist/psychiatrist who has evaluated her so my thoughts really don’t mean much. I think we all need to remember that this is a woman who truly is free after many years of what I think of as captivity. I think it’s a good sign that she’s getting her feelings out in the open. I hope she has supportive people around her. I do not count her sister as one of them. JL has been free to live her life and mature. Why doesn’t anyone mention the fact that she has issues she needs to address so that she’ll stop using her sister to make money.

  23. Karisma says:

    @jwoolman +1000

  24. Milktoast says:

Weird to see so much empathy for JL. She literally tried to move her nephews estate funds to her own account. All these people are horrible.

  25. jenn says:

It’s not so much what Jamie Lynn did or didn’t do then, it’s about what she’s doing now! As a grown woman with free will, who chooses to use her unencumbered freedom to hurt Britney and knowingly trigger her to a painful past. Jamie Lynn isn’t responsible for that past, but she could be a better sister and support system today by not trying to sell books and submit Britney to traumatic memories for a quick and dirty dollar.
