Marvel stars share pro vaccine messages following Evangeline Lilly’s idiocy

Way back in Phase One of Marvel’s Avengers, my daughter declared The Wasp was her Avenger. She had no interest in the movies, she’s just always been into bees. Now, though, she’s getting into the movies and we’re re-watching all of them with her in order they came out. Hand to God we watched Ant Man on Wednesday last week. Finally – The Wasp! And Evangeline Lilly shoots her mouth off about proudly supporting Robert Kennedy, Jr. at his Anti-Vaccination rally the next day. *shakes head* This b*tch. Fortunately, as anyone who’s watched Ant Man knows, the best part of the movie are the supporting characters. David Dastmalchian, who played Kurt, had something to say about his leading lady. As did Marvel newcomer and Shang-Chi himself, Simu Liu. Without mentioning Evangeline by name, both men tweeted they were disappointed that people with huge platforms would use them to spread erroneous information.

Marvel stars Simu Liu and David Dastmalchian have both seemingly spoken out against Ant-Man actress Evangeline Lilly following her recent comments about her attendance at an anti-vaccine mandate rally in Washington, D.C.

Dastmalchian, who plays Kurt in the Ant-Man films, tweeted, “It’s so unfortunate when people with a large platform use that platform to share irresponsible things.” He did not mention Lilly by name.

Neither did Liu, who portrays the titular role in the 2021 Marvel film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, when he tweeted about the coronavirus pandemic on the day Lilly shared her post.

“I lost my grandparents to COVID last year. They were still waiting for their vaccines,” the actor tweeted. “I’m fortunate to have been double-vaccinated and boosted when I got COVID 2 weeks ago. Felt like a cold.”

He also urged the media to stop “spotlighting opinions that are not rooted in facts or science.”

[From E!]

Good for them! All those bros who came out for Chris Pratt when he got his feelings hurt need to look at how they are using their voices right now. I understand there may be some Marvel code or request to tamp down criticism, but if anyone goes back and reads what Evangeline wrote, she’s spreading misinformation in her statement. It’s not a different opinion, it was incorrect and Marvel, Disney, etc. should be concerned about that. Plus she’s thumbing her nose at them because Letitia Wright was welcomed back on set after her stance on vaccinations. Evangeline is vaccinated. Since she’s met the studio requirement, she thinks she’s free to go out and poison the rest of the world. Evangeline is pro-pandemic, a term I intend to start using when appropriate, because I refuse to make these people martyrs to their misguided anti-vaxx causes. They are doing nothing but actively working to prolong the pandemic.

But thank goodness Simu and David have enough backbone to say something. I’m not bothered they didn’t mention Evangeline by name. We know who prompted their comments. I understand where Simu is coming from by saying we shouldn’t spotlight these opinions but in this case, Evangeline posted this to her own IG. She has 2.2M followers. As David pointed out, that’s a big platform for a bunch of garbage information. I’m glad the media blasted her.

And don’t worry, we’ve already told my daughter that Janet is the one true Wasp, End of.

    I’m adopting “pro-pandemic” for discussing anti-vax/anti-mask BS.

  2. alwaysannarun says:

My friend and I just pulled out of a race relay today because the rest of the runners on our team are unvaccinated by choice. Yes we are vaccinated but we don’t support those that are pro-pandemic (also using that now!). It’s frustrating that we have to miss out on fun activities because people ruin it for everyone else.

    • BothSidesNow says:

That is what angers me the most. While their refusal to be vaccinated due to their own selfishness and ignorance, the pro-pandemic idiots are the ones that will continue to keep the coronavirus active as it continues to mutate into other forms, like this newest mutation which is more transmittable than the Omicron. As those of us who are responsible adults and wish to bring an end to the pandemic, we have these idiots decrying their free-dumbs are being trampled upon.

Until public facilities start denying access to pro-pandemic group, whether it’s a theater or restaurants, we will never be free to live OUR lives due to a menacing bunch of fools.

Thanks @ Hecate for the fabulous label for these douchebags!!!

  3. LightPurple says:

Janet is the one true Wasp. More Michelle Pfeiffer!

  4. North of Boston says:

Glad some of the Marvel cast are pushing back. Not that people are responsible for their costars’ behavior, but if you’ve got a platform and can use it to combat toxic disinformation, that’s a good thing.

So sad that some of the highly visible actors portraying remaining key female roles in the MCU are pro-pandemic dolts.

  5. FF says:

Disney need to start putting a social media clause into their contracts. They clearly need one.

Social media sites should also start doling out serious suspensions for this kind of misinformation infraction. The problem of misinformation will only grow over time, they need to figure out how to effectively combat it. Trump pretty much put a spotlight on that point.

I’m also pretty sure they can’t fire someone for one erroneous Twitter thread if they’ve not repeated it (Wright). Now if she went full Gina Carano that’s a different thing.

    • BothSidesNow says:

@ FF, Disney should absolutely place a clause in their contracts for spreading misinformation. As for this Twit thinking that she is some type of warrior for those who are being “punished” for NOT being responsible adults, and their children as well, should have to face consequences for their lies. You are not a responsible individual if you are using your SM to flout misinformation that is detrimental to the public.

As for Liu, this must be particular painful due to the fact that he lost both of his grandparents. To see this Twit to spout lies and misinformation must be hurtful. Liu has experienced the same heart break and pain of losing loved ones that were unable to be vaccinated during the period before the vaccines were available.

I am thankful that both Liu and Dastmalchian have spoken up.

  6. FHMom says:

Anti vax but will inject her face with sh*t? Sounds about right for this dumb ass.

  7. Songs (Or It Didn't Happen) says:

Y’all know I am pretty big in to the MCU. There have been some heated comments, made by me, defending it on this very blog. So, I say this as someone who has seen most of the films, spread the gospel of Marvel, and laid out cash on these franchises: Evangeline thinks she’s Letitia and she ain’t. Shuri, Letitia’s character, is hugely beloved by the fans and attached to a franchise that suffered the devastating loss of its lead. Hope, Evangeline’s character, is just ….. there. Nobody is watching an Ant-Man movie for more Hope, unless they’re already an EL fan. She is utterly expendable.

Evangeline is gonna tweet her way out of a job, right out of hire-ability. She and Gina Carano can go make sh–ty Christmas movies together.

    • Songs (Or It Didn't Happen) says:

Also, Simu Liu is such an asset for Marvel and I hope they realize how lucky they are to have him.

    • teecee says:

Shuri’s only been in one film so far so if they straight up fired her (like they should) and just beefed up Lupita and Winston’s parts, most fans wouldn’t care. The ones that did would make noise for about 20 seconds and then shove the next brain dead Marvel movie down their gullets. Marvel fans are fans of the brand more than the individual people who make the product. (Unlike the Snyderverse people, who follow him more than DC. They also use him as an avatar for supporting every terrible thing in the world although he himself seems fine, just bad at writing and kinda stupid.)

      • North of Boston says:

Aside from your unnecessarily dismissive comments about people who enjoy watching Marvel movies, and how they consume them, your statement about LW’s appearances is incorrect.

Shuri has appeared in several MCU films.
The character is a brilliant scientist, who had tons of potential for interesting stories going forward, held a special place, particularly given the loss of CB. Shuri will be missed if written out due to the actress putting coworkers at risk with her behavior, spreading disinformation, etc. ( EL’s has fans, but not to the same extent. )

That being said, LW has behaved like a pro-pandemic moron, and no one character or actor is safe in the MCU, particularly with the multiverse opened up. And I won’t have an issue if Fiege and company dropped both LW and EL if they are out there spreading dangerous anti-science disinformation… people are free to think whatever they want, but if you’re using your platform to endanger other people through your actions, and spreading lies that could cost people their health and lives, there may just be some consequences.

      • Songs (Or it Didn't Happen) says:

North of Boston, thank you. You made my point more eloquently than I did. LW as Shuri would be missed but if she wants to play stupid games, she’s gonna win stupid prizes. On the other hand, “Hope who?”

  8. Sal says:

I only know Evangeline Lilly as the worst thing about Lost.

And by the end, there was a lot to despise about that show, so that’s saying something.

  9. Ari says:

Being anti vaxx is defacto eugenics. And since I come from the same shit province as Lilly, it doesn’t surprise me she also supported the trucker convoy protesting vaccines across Canada. A convoy with the Proud Boys boldly attending. News flash: if you’re movement has Nazis in it, there is something wrong with your movement.

  10. Christine says:

Hope she enjoys that paycheck while it lasts. Her character can easily be written out of the MCU and she’s going to have a real tough time when any casting announcement for future projects gets pushback. I can’t believe these publicists aren’t telling their clients to shut tf up.

  11. Celina says:

I’m a bit partial to plague-enthusiast but pro-pandemic works too.

  12. Celina says:

I’m so saddened that Simu Liu lost his grandparents. It’s infuriating that people brush off the deaths of the elderly and disabled as no big deal.

  13. Luna17 says:

So both Evangeline and Letitia are vaxxed to work on these movies (let’s be real, they aren’t gonna miss out on millions over a shot ) yet continue to spread lies to the masses and the anti vax masses don’t realize they are being played. Wealthy, vaxed movie stars are not the anti vax hero’s this movement thinks they are. It’s really amazing how gullible and sad anti vaxxers are to not see they are not the same as millionaire actors. I just can’t grasp how so many can’t see they are just pawns to make these wealthy people feel important.

    • Anne says:

Fox News is doing the same thing. Rich vaxxed morons like Tucker Carlson and the rest of them push anti vaccine misinformation on their gullible base meanwhile they stay safe.

  14. Margot says:

Super impressed by Simu. He’s a Canadian to be proud of. Evangeline, on the other hand, not so much.

  15. jferber says:

    2. Simu Liu is hot as hell and more importantly, 1. Yes, pro-pandemic is the best new phrase about these people yet. I hope it will catch on. God, make it so.
