A Kenyan tribe requested an apology for British colonialism from Prince William

Prince William “loves” Kenya. He loves parts of Kenya, like Jecca Craig’s family estate and some of the British conservation sites. He notably does not love Kenyans. He thinks they are having too many babies, and he just wishes Africans, on the whole, would stop reproducing. The Kenyan Talai clan never got William’s memo that he does not care for Africans. The Talai clan has made a direct plea to William, asking him to apologize for centuries of British colonialism in Kenya. They also want him to recognize the human rights violations committed against the Talai community.

A group of more than 100,000 Kenyans from the Talai clan has written to Prince William to seek an apology, and his support for reparations for human rights abuses they say they suffered during the British colonial settlement. The letter, a copy of which the BBC has seen, says the British government has declined to engage with the clan’s representatives and they’re therefore reaching out to the prince “because Kenya is special to him”. A request for comment has been sent to both the Royal Family and the British Foreign Office.

The Talai say the British government has declined to recognise the suffering of its members during the colonial era. A UN inquiry determined last year that gross human rights violations were committed particularly against the clan, including unlawful killing, sexual violence, torture, and arbitrary detention and displacement.

Five UN Special Rapporteurs then wrote to the British government regarding public apologies, reparations and remedy. In response, the UK said it had already issued a public apology and settlement in 2013 of claims made by Kenyans who lived through the emergency period and the Mau Mau insurgency, from 1952 to 1963 when Kenya gained independence. The Talai however insist that the case the British government referred to in its response is a separate case.

“Despite our immense suffering under British rule, the British Government has refused to acknowledge this fact or meet any of us, let alone apologise,” the group says. So they’ve turned to Prince William for help because of his personal connection to the country. “You proposed to your wife there and when your Grandmother became Queen, she was visiting Kenya – which at the time was one of the colonies.”

“We inherited the pain, you inherited the profit,” reads their letter to the prince. “Many of our group are very elderly so the urgency of this is paramount. We cannot let another victim of this time pass away still longing for their dignity to be restored.”

The clan says its members were forcefully evicted from fertile land in the highlands of the Rift Valley to pave the way for tea plantations, some of which still exist and are owned by UK-based multinationals. The Talai held a leadership role among the Kipsigis ethnic group in Kenya and led the resistance against European settlement. To quash it, every member of the Talai clan was forcefully moved to detention in a tse-tse fly and mosquito infested valley near present day Lake Victoria. The conditions there are recorded to have been so harsh that many of them died and women suffered miscarriages. They also lost their livestock in large numbers.

During the Cambridges’ Flop Tour, there were conversations from right-wing British figures, arguing that the royals can’t be expected to apologize for reprehensible colonialist acts committed several generations ago. Like, colonialism is a thing of the past and how dare anyone act as if the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are responsible for it. Nevermind that the Windsors have always benefited from their ancestors’ colonialism, and that they still wear those jewels and collect interest on their hundreds of millions of pounds and decorate their castles with the ivory they stole. This is a reminder that there are still people living who have been screwed over politically, financially, medically and racially by recent colonialism. This sh-t wasn’t just happening in the 18th and 19th centuries. This tribe has been living through it in real time. And no, William doesn’t give a sh-t. He hasn’t said anything.

Good for them. Time for a reckoning. Take back what’s rightfully yours, including generational wealth that was stolen. I’m with them.

    • CocofromCanada says:

Good! Keep it up they deserve this. It’s time.

    • Rose+Fox says:

You know this is the one time where if he opened his mouth and apologised, meaningfully, and agreed to learn he’d do tremendous rehab to the whole BRF image. But he’s too haughty for that and I’m sure he’s incandescent at the audacity so hello missed opportunity number 9999999

    • kirk says:

Billy may not have authorization to speak about it since he’s not sovereign. Sounded like Charles & QEII had substantive sit-down over what to say to Barbados.

Generational wealth seems to be major sticking point in talking to white people. They don’t ever want to admit that they didn’t rightfully acquire advantages.

  2. C says:

He’ll send a private response stating “I actually only like Kenya because of Jecca Craig.”

  3. Colby says:

Let me take a swing at what he’ll say, if anything: “I’m sorry you feel that way”

I don’t think the Carribbean countries or Kenya will get satisfaction from dealing with PW or anyone in the RF. They need to start forming and using their own governments to take back ownership of their lands.

    • SunnyW says:

I enjoy your comments so I don’t think you meant this how it came out, but their (our) governments are already formed…

      • equality says:

Some of the Carribbean countries’ governments are still formed around having a monarchy so they are going to have to make some changes if they want to drop the monarch. I just don’t think they are going to get anything out of the RF, not even a sincere apology. It would be nice to see these countries, at the least, get paid for lands taken from them or, better yet, being able to reclaim ownership of at least some.

The fact that BBC actually posted this article is what’s surprising. I expected it from the independent but not from them.
I hope more nations join in on sending these letters to Prince William and keep applying the pressure until the family is forced into some kind of change.

For now they’ll just keep ignoring it as much as they can but if this means less royal tours (so they can keep ignoring the problems) it will be a bonus for us all.

  6. MicMac says:

Ireland, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Kenya, South Africa, Jamaica, China. We could make a list all day of countries or regions Britain pillaged and have never been called on the carpet for. William doesn’t care.

    • Snuffles says:

Wouldn’t it be lovely, that upon the Queen’s death, she ordered all of the stolen jewels, art and artifacts in her collection be returned to their country of origin. William can’t be trusted to be the custodian of such priceless artifacts. He’s probably end up pawning them for cash.

She should use all of her stashed away billions to pay reparations. And return all of those royal properties back to the local governments so they can be put to better, commercial use instead of housing her lazy, shiftless family.

      • equality says:

She doesn’t actually own most of the stuff. It supposedly is owned by the British public and she only gets use and control of it as monarch.

    • Don’t forget Sri Lanka, old Ceylon. The biggest sapphire in the queen’s staff belongs to them.

  7. Noki says:

William has been looking more ragey than usual. I dont think he cares ,he is just mad that for the first time he has gotten relentless bad press. He cant even hide his jaw clenching in public.

  8. Nina says:

Why would he need to apologize? They are, after all, very much not a racist family.

    Lol

  9. Dee Kay says:

Britain f–ked up the Middle East with colonialism leading to endless wars and has not taken one whit of responsibility for creating conditions of permanent crisis there, like a spoiled brat who makes a gigantic mess then refuses to clean it up. Britain in general remains wilfully ignorant about the harms it has done to other places and people in order to enrich itself. (BTW same for all other colonizers, including the US — but the British Empire is notable for its size and duration and therefore its extreme harmfulness).

    • SenseOfTheAbsurd says:

Britain will fight all the way against taking any responsibility. When they left Kenya as a colony, well within living memory, crates and crates of documents were dumped overboard into the ocean, to destroy evidence of genocide and crimes against the local population.

  10. ChillinginDC says:

I will forever love that my predictions about that tour bringing about the start of the end of the British Monarchy was right on. These people need better PR, they need better people to handle their events, and they need someone to say that you showing up once a month to do something is very much showing the world that you are not necessary as an institution. It drives me crazy these people don’t fund organizations or are out doing multiple events a week.

  11. BeanieBean says:

I read of this last night. They’re not going to get an apology, not from this dope. What’s happened to these people from the inception of British rule has been horrifying, and there will be no acknowledgement, no apology, no reparations from the BRF.

  12. Over it says:

William when this letter is bought to his attention.
Why can’t these black peoples ever be content that I am their future king? Have I not graced them with my presence? Have I not said that they are having too many children.have I not said I am bored with racism. Have I not said that we are very much not a racist family? Have I not said that all I can offer is a smile? This is all that bloody black woman my weak brother married fault.
Damm these black peoples, damm them to hell, they are making it nearly impossible for me to go visit my jecca and hunt. He then gets up and throws something at someone or a wall.
You know what I love about the Kenyan tribe writing to William the incandescent? He wanted the spotlight, wanted to act like he is next in line, bet when his racist raging ass woke up he didn’t see all this retribution for what his family did and what he continues to profit from coming to his doorstep.

    • Lady D says:

Plus, choosing William to write to gives them 30-40 more years to request reparations from his family. I doubt this is the last he hears of this.

  13. Miranda says:

I still can’t believe my eyes every time I read about that “too many babies” comment. I mean, I know he’s a racist, but most racists of his stature at least TRY to be subtle about it.

And no, he doesn’t give a shit about these people. And it’s important to note that this isn’t “just” a matter of righting past wrongs or reparations. In Kenya and elsewhere in Africa, the creation of national parks and conservancies and the like has long been at the urging of their former colonial overlords. William is emblematic of this type of patron: rich white people who want their playgrounds to remain pristine. What is frequently, tragically overlooked in these conservation efforts is the fate of people, especially tribal peoples, who depend on these lands for their material, cultural, and linguistic survival. There are likely over 10 MILLION “conservation refugees” throughout Africa. The issues that the Talai are calling attention to shouldn’t be spoken of in past tense.

  14. Feeshalori says:

Kenya is basically telling William to put his money where his mouth is. If you love our country so much, apologize for your country’s colonialism and don’t treat ours like your personal playground.
