Boris Johnson is ‘giving up the best job in the world… But them’s the breaks’

I’m a little bit cloudy on the recent history of Tory politics in the UK, but wasn’t Boris Johnson one of the main Tory power-brokers to oust Theresa May in 2019? Wasn’t there some kind of behind-the-scenes power play and BoJo was like “we’ll force May out and then I’ll be prime minister”? I seem to remember something like that. Back in 2019, May had to step out of 10 Downing Street and give a sad little press conference/announcement at the podium about how she was stepping down. Three years later, Boris is in the exact same position. We heard early this morning that BoJo would resign… in October. The announcement was made by Boris today.

“I want to tell you how sorry I am to be giving up the best job in the world… But them’s the breaks.” Translated: I was prepared to cling to power with my last dying breath until they dragged me kicking and screaming out of Downing Street but then I thought about how much money I can make in the private sector.

Up until this week, I actually thought Boris would survive? I know he’s not made of teflon, but it just seemed like the Tories had such a strangle-hold on British politics that Boris would inevitably be protected, and he would limp along indefinitely, losing some of his power but remaining prime minister. I think what’s happening internally within the Conservative Party is fascinating too – they’ve been in power for what? Twelve years, because David Cameron came into office in 2010. Twelve years is a long time for one party to have control.

A few more notes… the Tories are apparently very concerned that BoJo will burn it all down in this three-month transition period. Former prime minister John Major is telling his party to get Boris the f–k out of Downing Street NOW. Also: Boris apparently has to see the Queen in person and tender his resignation? I guess that’s because the prime minister needs the Queen’s permission to form a government, so the PM needs her permission to dismantle it too.

Yeah, well, he was the absolute worst at that best job, so them’s the breaks…

My gawd!! You would have thought it was a campaign speech and NOT a resignation speech….

BoZo couldn’t shut his MF mouth but express ALL of these “greatest” accomplishments during his tenure. From rolling out the vaccines to be the biggest, staunchest supporter to Ukraine and President Zelensky.

BoZo, you f-upped big time!! Deal with it and move on…..

I really, really despise this man and the tories! They have taken this country to the gutters, fuelled and emboldened racists whilst gutting public services and profiting from them, if not directly via their mates. He needs to go immediately, if this was any normal workplace he’ll be sack, effective immediately. Someone on twitter said boris johnson was one of the primary mp’s who push david cameron and theresa may out and now he himself is the cause of having to resign as Prime Minister, so we’ve gone full circle. Enough of the tories!!!!

  3. MaryContrary says:

Is he hoping everyone will forget by October and he can just stick around?!

  4. Nev says:

Look at Boris with the hip hop slang!!!!!

  5. Jessie Quinton says:

He cannot be allowed to stay. In a just world, there would be a General Election and he and the rest of them would lose their seats en masse.

And it definitely should not be that he gets to stay there and hand off power to ANOTHER Tory.

Someone on Twitter compared searching for an adequate Tory PM to searching for a PortaPotty at Glastonbury, and I think that’s the best description of this situation.

    • The Hench says:

I think it should be compared to the difficulty of not finding either a portopotty or MP that’s not full of sh*t.

  6. Amy Bee says:

People on Twitter are saying Boris not leaving immediately means that he will try his utmost to remain in office. I believe that too.

    • Genevieve says:

And he’ll do his utmost to return to office. He’s probably looking at this as a temporary setback. The arrogant *badword*

  7. Sarah says:

He hasn’t resigned. Theory is he will try to put in more policy changes in 3 months that he hopes will be popular after which he will call an election and hope to win. Rogue PM. Trump would be proud 🤦🏻‍♀️

  8. Roseberry says:

We’re not celebrating too much yet. 1st he’s got to actually go, 2nd the long list of possible replacements include an almost as bad number of liars, cheats, racists, classists, brextieers, millionaires, evil witches and blonds dumber than Boris (Nadine Dorries!)

    • Mei says:

It’s a bingo card of the absolute worst remaining people in the Conservatives that will put themselves forward for this. Did you see that Liz Truss has f*cked off from the G20 foreign minister’s meeting that’s going on in Indonesia to come back and canvass support for her leadership bid? It’s completely about self-interest for these people, nothing more.

  9. BUBS says:

Ehm, I don’t know…at no point did he actually expressly say he was “resigning”. Good luck, Britain…

  10. mich says:

Is Simon Case headed back to BRF? How many will get jobs?

  11. jferber says:

He should go now, not October, by which time he could have changed his mind and made back room deals, etc., to stay in office. GO NOW! Don’t give him time to re-group. One nice thing: his hair has calmed down. At least his hair has accepted the inevitable loss of power.

    • SnoodleDumpling says:

Oh geez, he really must be panicking if he hasn’t given his hair it’s customary ruffle before he got in front of the cameras.

  12. Mei says:

He has ruined everything for this country and put a stake through our democracy since he first pledged support for Brexit and stepped into Downing Street. I heard a very apt analogy on the radio today – The flames are out and the arsonist has been removed, but the house is a burnt out wreck and we don’t know how, when or if it can be repaired. It’s just gut-wrenching to be honest. He has presided over the most divisive, repulsive and dangerous time in British politics and we can never forgive him or anyone who helped him do it (the rest of the Tory party, the right-wing gutter press and media (DM, Telegraph, Express, GB news etc.), and whoever else).

  13. SarahCS says:

Of course he is still plotting! It’s all about his and the country is caught in the crossfire.

I’ve not read any of the full coverage yet today, did Carrie really wheel out their kid for this photo-op? Definitely seems more like a campaign than a resignation if that’s the case.

  14. Nicole says:

Can the Brits enlighten me? How have the Torys been able to maintain power for so long. They have been having PM issues for the last 3 administrations. Is there a way to get them out? Do you want them out?

    • Em says:

Because the Tories (the Conservatives) won a majority in the last election, the only way to get rid of them is by voting, in the next election which I believe is 2024. However, the new PM that the party nominates, expected to come in October, can call a general election if they feel they need a mandate “from the people”. In reality, this could happen only if the Tories are doing better in the polls by then.

    • Digital Unicorn says:

Because we don’t have a strong enough opposition leader and party – there were many many issues with Corbyn and now with Starmer who were/are very weak leaders and Labour is just as bad as the Tories with their own sleaze and problems. But saying that if there is another Gen Election soon I think the populace would prefer Starmer over Blow Job or whoever replaces him. None of those being touted are particularly palatable to the UK populace – Priti Patel is pretty much universally hated. The others are seen as clowns and Johnson loyalists.

  15. Truthiness says:

It’s surprising to me that Boris has only been PM for 3 years, it felt like an eternity. We should be able to count them in dog years! I hope Britain recovers faster then it’s taking the U.S. to get over Trump. T left the U.S. such a raging tire fire that we’ll be feeling wretched far into the future.

  16. Saucy&Sassy says:

Perhaps TQ could visit him and accept his resignation. I wouldn’t wait for him to go to TQ. Is there any way at all that the Tory party can get him out now and not wait until October? I’ve said for the last two years at least that he is Trump’s cousin because he reminds me so much of Trump. I don’t understand how the UK works, but I think they need to get him out of office NOW. He’s too much like Trump. He will burn the place down and enjoy doing it.
