Tom Cruise, Nicole Scherzinger & Winnie the Pooh will ‘appear’ at the coronation

Buckingham Palace approached so many different British celebrities and musical acts to perform or appear at the coronation concert, and they all turned down the gig. Adele, Ed Sheeran and Elton John all said no, and Sheeran was even publicly bullied by the palace about it. What’s remarkable is that the palace then turned to American stars, and the Americans have decided to show up. It’s so bizarre – like, the British media endlessly cries about everything being “too American,” and now American entertainers are saving Charles’s ass. How much is Katy Perry getting paid for this gig? What is Lionel Richie getting out of it? Well, those aren’t the only (American) names. Tom Cruise will be there. So will Nicole Scherzinger (she’s American but lives in the UK). Will Nicole sing “Don’t Cha”? They’re also bringing poor Winnie the Pooh into this.

King Charles III’s coronation is set to be a memorable occasion – if only for the eclectic lineup that will be appearing at a concert thrown in the new monarch’s honor. The latest stars to be confirmed for the Coronation Concert, which will take place in the grounds of Windsor Castle the day after the historic ceremony, are “Top Gun” actor Tom Cruise, Pussycat Dolls frontwoman Nicole Scherzinger and tubby little cubby Winnie the Pooh.

For the coronation, which will honor King Charles’ ascension to the throne following the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth last year, Cruise and Pooh will appear alongside “Dynasty” star Joan Collins, singer Tom Jones, adventurer Bear Grylls and dancer Oti Mabuse in a series of pre-recorded VTs in which they will reveal “little-known facts about the King.”

Also newly confirmed for the concert are Paloma Faith, Tiwa Savage, Steve Winwood, Olly Murs and club DJ Pete Tong, who will play his Ibiza classics. The concert will also feature world-renowned pianist Lang Lang as well as recent “The Piano” winner Lucy. Bollywood star Sonam Kapoor will also appear on stage to deliver a spoken word performance to introduce the Commonwealth virtual choir.

They will join artists including Katy Perry and Lionel Richie, who were announced earlier this month. “Downton Abbey” star Hugh Bonneville will host the proceedings, which are being produced by BBC Studios.

[From Variety]

There does seem to be a palpable sense of relief that at least the palace managed to book some celebrities, although this is not really a glittering or electric lineup of musical acts and A-listers. I guess even Tom Cruise turned down a live appearance – it sounds like he just filmed something which will be shown at the concert, same with Pooh and Bear Grylls. Like, I think the actual coronation ceremony is going to be full of crappy optics, but the absolute shambles of the chubbly concert should not be underestimated.

  1. Lorelei says:

That’s quite the star-studded lineup, Chuck! (giggles to self)

  2. Amy Bee says:

This concert sounds terrible and I didn’t know Tom Cruise wasn’t showing up in person.

  3. Eurydice says:

“Eclectic” as in “a grab bag of hodge-podge.”

  4. Haylie says:

Fellow deadbeat dad and controlling husband Tom Cruise. And a stuffed bear, which is a creepy thing when you recall Groomer Pedo Andy and his love of stuffed bears.

And a singer who got caught cheating on his wife in a very ugly public way (Lionel Richie)

    Quite the lineup.

    • Truthiness says:

There’s a rumor that the UK govt had been very harsh on Scientology and that Cruise won an improved standing in return for his support of the royal family. Besides, royal classism dovetails nicely with his own “better than thou” beliefs. They’re all legends in their own mind.

  5. Chantal says:

Noooo, not Winnie the Pooh! Lionel Richie had better sing Zoom in order to redeem himself. No comment about the mean and disrespectful Katy Perry…

    • Jan says:

Did you know she was booed by the audience last week on American Idol?

      • Rackel says:

@jan. I wrote this a few days ago but it sounds like Katy perry NEEDS the coronation. Katy always need press but now she needs some goodwill. Although with the royals bullying people….. I don’t know.

    • Christine says:

I wonder what Paddington had to do to get out of this shit show? He’s usually the go-to bear they pull out for royalty.

Chuck probably didn’t want to compete with his mother’s memory and a marmalade sandwich in her purse, so it’s Pooh to the rescue.

I cannot stress how funny I am finding every single bit of this.

  6. Otterton says:

What an absolutely weird ass mix of “celebrities” for this concert. Also I honestly thought Joan Collins was dead, so good to hear she’s still going! 😂

    • Mar says:

I actually think Joan will save the event lol

    • Brassy Rebel says:

She’s in keeping with the theme of celebrating the eighties. She can bring those Dynasty vibes.

    • Jan says:

Nasty people like Joan don’t die, they just waste away, she is cowmilla’s best friend.

      • AC says:

For the BRF and the BM and some of the British public who literally can be very condescending to Americans they turn to Americans to save their a$$es lol.. some of their comments they say about Americans whether on Twitter or YouTube comments is too much of envy. Their hypocrisy is super lame .
No matter one’s opinions on Tom Cruise, love him or hate him , he is the biggest movie star in the world. Labeling him that he’ll be attending the coronation is just free advertising that this is a VIP event. Also agree about Winnie the Pooh, he’s more associated to Disney now than anything. Even Winnie the Pooh and Christopher on Disney cartoons speak with an American accent. Paddington Bear would have been more appropriate for the Coronation (insert rolling eyes here).

  7. MSTJ says:

Winnie the Pooh!? Surprised it’s not Paddington bear like QEII had for the Jubbly. Did the palace approach Disney to put together a short film for them? If so, I wonder how much they paid?

At any rate I guess Charles does still have an affinity for the teddy bear. I wonder if he’ll display his well-worn oft-mended childhood bear (mentioned in Spare) as a coronation attraction as he continues to showcase himself to the nation.

I wonder why him and Andrew seem so taken with teddy bears beyond their childhood. Strange.

    • SarahCS says:

They clearly want to ruin yet another beloved childhood character.

The people of the UK don’t much care for the royals anymore so they’re trying to be popular by association.

  8. Brassy Rebel says:

Seriously, Winnie the Pooh? To complement Bear Grylls I guess. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  9. girl_ninja says:

Maybe Tom will convert Peg and Buttons to Scientology?

  10. LadyE says:

Dying of laughter at this lineup! OMG please please put the cameras on the Royals while the club dj is performing his hits!!

  11. Mary Pester says:

OMG I’m getting shades of Mr Bean and his teddy, please, please for those of you who don’t know Mr bean, look it up with his teddy 😂😂😂and nooooo just look at those stars, Tom Cruise is all fan boy on Kate, and Joan Collins can compare botox treatments with her, yep, REALLY underwhelming

  12. tamsin says:

The inspiration for Winnie the Pooh was a Canadian bear, but the Pooh books are British. Disney just owns the rights to the character. Paddington is associated with the Queen now, so lucky for Charles there’s Pooh, another teddy bear. Disney created an adorable little film in honour of Archie’s birth, so maybe they will do the same for Charles’s coronation. The film for Archie was a gift. And Disney did use Charles’s name in relation to the perpetuities announcement recently. Maybe it’s an exchange of services- who knows. Anyway, Pooh is a late announcement.

  13. Jan says:

Disney did a short cartoon of Winnie the Pooh delivering a book for Archie’s birth, and now desperate granddad not satisfied that he is having the ConAnation on Archie’s birthday, he is pulling out Winnie the Pooh.
All the BRF does is copy everything M & H does, hugging peasants, and sharing pizzas with them, how long is it going to last?
Now if someone would give The Princess of Wails an award for the 5 questions, it would be the cherry on top.

    • Rackel says:

I just wrote about Winnies commonwealth ties but you are probably at least half right. Archie put Winnie on the radar. Hahaha.

I’m choosing to look at this as a tribute. A shared day of nice memories. And not Charles trying to link Camilla with di through Archie.
      This is crazy.

  14. Rackel says:

People got offended on kates behalf when others said she had no friends. Yet, her is an example. Kate knows movie stars are tiny. She couldve wore flats or a slight heel in order to play along. Instead she wore tall heels and didn’t get a di and Travolta moment.

Winnie the pooh. I thought of him when Elizabeth was hanging out with Paddington. Winnie was a real bear and had ties to England and Canada. He is a star and chuck is lucky to get him.

  15. Nicegirl says:

Was I the only one who read the post thinking the title had to be a joke? 😂 Take care at the concert there Pooh Bear. We hear it may be a very blustery day.

  16. J. Ferber says:

I think either Tom Cruise or Winnie the Pooh would be fitting second husbands for Kate.

  17. RiaH says:

I’m upset because I read Andrea Bocelli will be performing.

  18. EasternViolet says:

Is anyone picturing this concert? The pouring rain, monarchists in plastic capes, mud like Woodstock 99, A sad fairground crowd. Chances are they won’t be able to give away tickets.

  19. Blithe says:

My first thought when I read the heading was: OMG! Paddington Bear turned them down! So they had to try for Pooh. Lol. Paddington Bear and the Real Queen seemed to have a lovely relationship. There’s no way that he would shill for Charles and his alcoholic prune!

I will now devote way too much time to wondering what fictional characters and/or stuffed toys might best represent this coronation. Maybe Eeyore?

    • Roo says:

Oh, poor Eeyore. Let’s not do that to him. I hear that mean, giant babydoll from Toy Story is available; she hasn’t had many gigs lately. 😂

  20. Pocket Litter says:

WTF? Shame on you, Steve Winwood! SMH.
