Doja Cat calls her last two albums ‘cash-grabs and yall fell for it’

Doja Cat talks a lot and it’s gotten her in trouble from time to time. I thought she’d started to lay low because I hadn’t heard about one of her little controversies in a while. She dressed up as a cat at the Met Gala and I like cats. But, Doja is at it again and this time she’s roasting… herself? She went on Twitter and called her last two albums “cash-grabs” and “mediocre pop.” Um, I could have told you that, but it’s weird that she’s saying it herself.

Doja Cat is throwing her old music under the bus. In a recent Twitter post, the multihyphenate rapper, singer, and musician told fans that her platinum albums, 2019’s Hot Pink and 2021’s Planet Her, were “cash grabs.”

“planet her and hot pink were cash-grabs and yall fell for it,” Doja Cat tweeted. “now i can go disappear somewhere and touch grass with my loved ones on an island while yall weep for mediocre pop.”

The announcement was seemingly in support of building hype for her next album, which she says is not called “hEllMoUth,” which should please the case-sensitive segment of her fanbase. “its not called hEllMoUth either its called “First of All” and yes I’m announcing the album title right now.”

Doja’s recent tweets have signaled some unease with her current place in the pop-culture landscape. “My comment section on IG used to be only positivity because I was doing what everyone wanted me to do and I love that I can see through all the bullshit now,” she tweeted. “It’s nice. Much love to everybody else thats been down since day one I appreciate it.”

When asked what changed, Doja responded that “after coachella” she felt burned out on “doing a bunch of shit” she didn’t believe in. She lamented not producing “anything personal” and instead was “cranking out digestible pop hits for children on twitter to get into fights about.” Of course, at least some of these songs were produced by Dr. Luke, who worked on the two albums and earned him his first no. 1 hit since the Ke$ha allegations stalled his career in the process. Doja expressed regret over their collaborations in a 2021 Rolling Stone profile, saying she hadn’t “worked with him in a very long time,” and accused him of taking credit for her work.

Of course, it’s sometimes hard to tell with the meme music maker. Fluent in all forms of digital irony, Doja Cat has, in the past, trolled fans, announcing retirement plans last year that never came to fruition. All that’s to say, don’t be surprised if this all changes very soon or is never mentioned again.

The article speculates that Doja talking about her past albums like that was in service of promoting her new album, which she mentioned in the same breath. Interesting marketing technique. I actually didn’t even realize she had two albums since she still seems new to me. She did churn them out pretty quickly, in 2019 and 2021. Artists usually talk about how they’ve grown from their previous work instead of flat out roasting it. Or if they do discredit their previous work, they don’t tell fans that it was a money grab and “they fell for it.” The gloating is a bit much, but I did chuckle at “touch grass” because Doja is so online that she needs to do so. Anyway, Doja announced that the new album is not called “hEllMoUth,” it’s called “First of All,” which is good because the former would have been annoying to type and the only Hellmouth I recognize is in Sunnydale.

Artists sometimes don’t like their beginning work because they wanna make it and follow advice that is nothing like them artistically. I remember loving Pink’s 1st album which sounded so much different from the sound she is known for today, even she said she didn’t like it, of course there’s evolution but and the style/vibe we know her for, even for then, it was clash. Good for artists that wanna be themselves

  2. Eurydice says:

Ok, I guess. Maybe she’ll feel more fulfilled if her next album makes no money and her IG is full of negativity.

  3. shanaynay says:

No shade. I must be so out of the loop, that I cannot name any of her songs. Can someone help me out? I’m sure I might have heard one of them, but maybe didn’t realize it was her. : – ) thanks!

Say So (with a Nicki Minaj verse that goes “he ain’t never seen it in a dress like this”) and Kiss Me More with SZA.

But I guess according to Doja those songs are so stupid I’m just ridiculous for “falling for it” and enjoying them. I love it when artists I like make fun of me for liking them.

      • shanaynay says:

        LOL!!

Thank you. I don’t believe I’ve heard it. AT work we have 102.7 on 24/7. When I’m home I barely turn on the radio.

Seriously! If she didn’t like the work a simple my next album I’ve decided to explore a different side artistically would’ve been fine. Making her fans seem like losers for liking what was in fact good music is so weird. It gives pickle energy…like she’s trying to hang out with the rockers (or rappers, not sure what the new sound will be). Either way, I try to root for her but she makes it very difficult best of luck on her future endeavors.

      • Jurnee says:

Bro, that was not Nicki Minaj in say so. That was legit doja. She just changed her voice.

I truly dislike this woman. She’s overrated and her music isn’t that all that. To me, she is an example of if an online troll became famous. Not to mention her problematic online past.

    • Normades says:

Same. She’s said so much sketchy stuff and they’re still trying to make her happen. I can’t believe she’s a “fashion girl” now.

  5. Jm says:

I am worried about her mental health. She seems more like she’s spiraling than truth telling to me lately

Also, of course Dr Luke still has a career. Always failing upwards for men.

  6. Selene says:

Tiktok made her career; her first album hadn’t sold at all and makeup artists began to play “Candy” on their videos and that was her come-up, 2 or 3 years after its release. So that “it was intentional” attitude of hers is undeserved and incorrect.

The world is a burning hellscape. Every day, at least in America, we wake up to news about mass shootings, Ron F-ing DeSantis, women being stripped of their reproductive rights, racism from the police, racism from EveryWhere, the LGBTQ being demonized and endangered, senseless gun violence, senseless murder, climate change (literally, a burning hellscape), a shitty economy, rent skyrocketing, cost of living skyrocketing, culture wars and Fucking Donald Trump and we are told we need to be angry and scared ALL THE TIME because if we sleep on any of this it is just Going to Get Worse. So what the hell is wrong with a pop song that doesn’t have any deep meaning and is just fun to listen to? Can we not even have 4 minutes listening to a bop on a radio??

I’m sorry Doja doesn’t seem to realize or appreciate how important a few precious moments of mindless joy or relaxation can be.

It is not a good idea ( from a business perspective ) to alienate your user base.

    • ME says:

Not only her user base but she collaborated on those albums with other artists. What is she saying about THEIR music? I think she is talented. Her life story is pretty interesting. I think she should write about that. Also, I think she’d make a fantastic actress. I hope she gets a few roles in movies. I think that may be where her future is going.

  9. lionfire says:

I’m kinda stunned we are still talking about this racist trash bag without at lest mentioning the fact she’s a racist trash bag.

  10. Kathleen says:

Don’t forget the Hellmouth in Cleveland……..

  11. Chloeee says:

I want to like her. I like her music, she can sing, rap, and perform her ass off. When I was younger I had a knee jerk reaction to pop music that as I’ve gotten older I have softened and just enjoy a catchy song. I have quite a few of hers on my gym playlists. But again, girl, you’re entitled to your thoughts but…bummer. I thought it was good pop by someone with evident chops.

    • Michael says:

Same. I do like her music and she is super talented but I dislike her personally and it is getting worse. She seems really unstable frankly

  12. Lucía says:

I really like her music but her attitude is ALWAYS the worst.

  13. j.ferber says:

Very pretty woman. Basically, she’s trash talking. If she wants to make better music that she respects, then do that.

    • Jillybean says:

Interesting cause she’s apparently a big fan of Dresden dolls and Amanda Palmer so….
Don’t know her music but if she goes in AP direction! Should be very interesting and awesome 👏

  14. Veronica S. says:

Okay, so make a non-mediocre one then lol. Show us your best.
