President Biden & King Charles made up & they’re back to being friends

Here are more photos of President Joe Biden’s stop by Windsor Castle, all part of his whirlwind one-day visit to the UK. Pres. Biden is due at the NATO Summit in Lithuania this week and his staff tacked on this day-trip to the UK because British feathers have been significantly ruffled by Irish Joe and his refusal to engage with their shenanigans.

I’ll be fair to both President Biden and King Charles: they seem friendly and Charles was a gracious host. Thankfully, no pens were around, so Charles was able to keep a sense of regal dignity about him. The two men seemed to genuinely have some kind of friendship, and they were both laughing and even sort of affectionate. Biden seemed out of sorts with all of the pomp of the big royal greeting – why they make American presidents review the British troops, I still have no idea. Charles then welcomed Biden into the castle, into the hallway of photo-ops. This is the same hallway where QEII took photos with the Bidens. And Trump.

Interestingly, Queen Camilla was not around. Considering this whole trip was about business, Dr. Jill Biden wasn’t there, so I guess the palace was like “well, we don’t need Camilla to come out for this.” I think that’s fine – just keep it between the king and the president, one-on-one. Plus, I would imagine the White House wanted Biden to avoid Camilla, given the fact that she ran around, telling people that Biden farted in front of her. The official Biden White House policy is: she who smelt it, dealt it.

In addition to having tea with the king, Biden will discuss some green initiatives at the castle, and I would assume there are many ways the two men can find common ground. When Biden was visiting 10 Downing Street earlier in the day, he described the British-American relationship as “rock solid” and told the media that “It’s good to be back” in the UK.

PS… if you’re going to make Irish Joe do a photo-op in the bright sun, let him wear his aviator sunglasses.

One thing I noticed the discussions at Windsor was about climate change. During QEII’s time what was discussed between her and the visiting HoS was not part of a BP read out. It shows Charles is not in the loop for the Ukraine discussions. Charles was to be seen desperately as a world leader.

    • MrsBanjo says:

They probably know he’d leak like a sieve to the press if they did discuss Ukraine.

    • Nic919 says:

It’s probably also because an unelected head of state talking about war doesn’t play well in the general public.

  2. OMG. My head hurts from all the dizzying twist and turns. From how dare he not attend coronation to look they are are on good terms and having tea. All this in one short period of time. I’m glad Horsilla wasn’t there because who needs her mucking up the works.

    • Mary Pester says:

@susanCollins, yep maybe they are laughing as Charlie has said to Joe “camillas not here because you and I both know who caused the stink” 😂😂, and I don’t care what these two talked about as long as Charlie didn’t try twisting Joe’s arm about harry, because I wouldn’t put it past him

IIRC, in the early days of the Iraq war, the troop inspection felt relevant because we were active allies. And to some extent, we still are. Back then, my brother was in the Marines anti-terrorism unit and went through training from the Navy Seals with their British counterparts, and he said they (especially the Welsh and Scottish soldiers) were completely bananas. Like in their downtime, they would throw rocks at each other for fun. He was very impressed with the British Marines.

  4. Southern Fried says:

Chucky isn’t special, Joe gives no sh*tz about him but he does respect the British people as a whole.

    • FC says:

This was apparent when Biden chatted with the guardsman (gasp!) and Chuck not only tried to guide him away but also threw a look at the guard to stop engaging. They couldn’t be more different on how they view common folk.

  5. AnneL says:

I noted Biden putting a light hand on Chuck’s back. We all know he’s a touchy sort of guy, and it gets him into trouble. I do think he needs to rein it in sometimes, but I also believe he means well and is just a naturally warm person. But I’m mildly surprised that someone didn’t get outraged about it over there, LOL. I guess because he’s POTUS, he’s allowed to touch the Monarch?

Also, not me being petty because I note that Biden is taller and seems more stately than Charles and that makes me smile…..

    • Bee says:

They most certainly got outraged when Michelle Obama touched the queen!

      • Jayne says:

@Bee we know why they were *really* upset about Mrs. Obama…

      • Truthiness says:

Touching is exactly what jumped out to me too, Bee. A nation wept when Michelle touched the Queen.

Now that memoirs and aides’ interviews can reveal more, I find it striking that the Queen’s closest relationship with a US president was with Barack and they were a bit close. Once Michelle & the girls were vacationing quietly in the UK the Queen found out, asked them for tea and had the girls given a royal carriage tour of London.

    • Jan90067 says:

I’m pettier than you are I guess, because I noticed the cuff on the pants of the *usually* “Impeccably Dressed Prince” (now CRex), is half down! Looks sloppy. Can’t believe one of his “courtiers” didn’t notice it and fix it before photos.

I love the photo op hallway and can’t help but notice that the Queen made Trump, who notoriously hates dogs, stand next to a dog bowl but both times with Biden, there has been no dog bowl in sight. Elizabeth knew how to throw shade

    • PunkyMomma says:

Haha! Yes! The dog bowl. Such exquisitely unsubtle shade.

The photo op hallway always gives me high end flea market feels—absolutely claustrophobic—

  7. Jensa says:

This is just diplomacy really – both men are capable of being friendly when the occasion calls. It’s just regular meet-and-greet stuff for Joe. Charles is beside himself because Joe is a VVVIP, and there’s nothing Charles likes more than feeling he has the ears and attention of VVVIPs (I’ve never seen him happier than at that reception before the Queen’s funeral where all the leaders of the world were gathered – he was grinning like a Cheshire cat, I’m not sure he appreciated they were there to pay respects to his mother rather than to him).

    • Nic919 says:

Biden is also a very good retail politician and knows how to make people feel welcome. The media likes to trash him, but Biden has met Charles many times already and I doubt there were any issues between them personally as much as the right wing Uk spin pretended.

  8. Flowerlake says:

I am glad Camilla wasn’t there.

They look dignified now. She might have caused some issue. She is too chummy with shady media people to trust her. Pretty obvious England’s right wing doesn’t like Biden much to being too effective and not all about the rich.

  9. B says:

The best thing about having a grown up as President again is knowing that diplomacy is being done correctly and that there will be no embarrassment on the global stage. Watching how Trump behaved around other leaders was sooo embarrassing. While Biden’s visit is giving me Harry in and out of the corny vibes, I’m glad he went. He has a long history with the family and I doubt any trade deals will be discussed. This is just soft diplomacy and is to be expected. It really is a relief to have him as President.

  10. HeyKay says:

The DMail is all over this, declaring Biden too touchy/feely not following royal protocol, etc.

Charles and William really need to start either loosening up OR have the Team instruct the visiting world leaders Do Not Touch the Royals. Period.
    One or the other.

What ever happened to the diplomats training?
I miss the days when these politicians stood still for the formal photo and that was it.
Maybe I just miss the days when Cronkite did a 2 second info on the nightly news and every damn blink was not run 24/7/365 on SM.

Btw, William should insist that Kate stop grabbing him at public work events. Hands off the royal butt, in public Kate!

  11. Ameerah M says:

Joe couldn’t care less what these people think of him lol. He is there to do business and leave. Because he’s a professional.

  12. HeyKay says:

The photo in the hallway at WC makes me glad I don’t have to live in those dark, overly decorated with gold frames, photos of dead royalty everywhere spaces.

OTOH, get some use out of those stupid palaces for all the tax payer money that is spent on the upkeep.

I miss Barak & Michelle. They were so glamorous, well spoken, dignified, on and on. They represented the US with so much class! I had such hope when they were in office, I really thought they could get things going even tho the old guard was against them all day.
Biden has so much to work on after Trump. Pushy mountains to just get anything fixed.

  13. Em says:

Never seen chuckles so happy, I truly believe if Biden skipped this he would have actually cried.

The desperation him and his bald elder son have to be seen as important/ relevant rather than a well fattened puppet is so funny it’s almost comical.

Wishful thinking but I hope Biden told him he sucks for his treatment of Harry and his little family.

  14. Emme says:

Much as I LOVE Joe Biden I am increasingly concerned about how old he’s looking, shuffling along and trying to give the occasional skip to try and show he isn’t shuffling. The hand on Charles’s back looked to me more like a person steadying themself before a step than a casual tap. My heart is in my mouth every time Biden approaches a step or stairs in case it’s yet another fall. Add mixing up his words, forgetting the names of people he’s with, it all points to a man who should retire, not consider another term in office. Surely, in a land of so many millions America could find a decent, younger Democrat candidate to stand for President? I know we all desperately want to keep Trump or his right-wing ilk out, but come on America!

    • Saucy&Sassy says:

Emme, you are repeating the far right agenda here. Joe Biden will be great for another four years. I’m sure that there are many not only in the US, but worldwide who REALLY don’t want him re-elected. They want another extremely far right person as the US President so that they can get rid of as many rights as possible. They want another Nazi Germany here.

Joe Biden has gotten more done for this Country than you know. He invested in the US. That’s something the UK is not and have not done, unfortunately.

  15. Saucy&Sassy says:

Please. Great friends? This is what the President is supposed to do–it’s why taxpayers pay his salary. The UK government and bm wants the US to do a trade deal with the UK. When Biden was elected and before he took office he made it clear that he would be working with big blocks of countries–like the EU–and the UK would be towards the bottom of the list. The UK NEEDS the US. All of this snubbing KFC, etc., is part of that. I’m sure Biden did some business with the government, but KFC? That’s just for show. Biden didn’t spend 36 years as a US Senator, 8 years as Vice President and now his time as President without refining some amazing diplomacy skills.

    • Patricia says:

Well said, Saucy. Joe Biden has been a credit to the US for years. I’m hoping for a second term so we can keep a real leader, and an honorable man, in charge. The thought of Trump nauseates me.

  16. Jferber says:

President Biden is as good a glad-hander as any. He saw Charles for good wil and because the President is a kind and convivial man. Friends? I think not.

  17. BeanieBean says:

A couple of observations: Charles has quite a heel on his left shoe, seems higher than his right. The cuff on his right pant leg is down, somebody should have noticed that. And finally: Charles has already had the furniture rearranged & some artwork replaced. Wow! Wonder if the Queen is even cold yet when he started rearranging the furniture.

  18. jferber says:

Sorry, good will (a long, long day!)

  19. MsDoe says:

I’m actually quite shocked at how sloppy Charles looks all the time. Joe Biden looks crisp and well-tailored, and Charles looks droopy and wrinkly and his suits poorly fit. It’s unforgivable — the man reputedly has 4 valets, and wears Saville Row custom tailored clothing. I can imagine the cheeks of his tailor burning… What is wrong with Charles these days? Why does he look so shabby?? He’s a billionaire, you’d think he’d look better in his suits.
