Mel Gibson once was one of the biggest movie stars in the world, but then his racism, abuse, fundamentalism and antisemitism came to light, and his career has never been the same. He still pops up in weird moments, and Hollywood “welcomed” him back in 2016-17 when he directed Hacksaw Ridge and it got nominated for six Oscars, including Best Director for Gibson. Still one of the craziest things to happen, awards-season-wise, in the past decade. He’s also really MAGA these days, obviously. Anyway, following his bonkers, abusive relationship with Oksana Grigorieva, Mel ended up in a longterm romantic relationship with a much younger woman named Rosalind Ross. They got together when he was 60 and she was 25. They had a son together in early 2017. Well, now they’re over. They’ve been over for a year, apparently.
Mel Gibson and Rosalind Ross have separated after nine years together, PEOPLE confirms.
“Although it’s sad to end this chapter in our lives, we are blessed with a beautiful son and will continue to be the best parents possible,” Gibson and Ross tell PEOPLE in an exclusive joint statement.
The director-actor, 69, and screenwriter, 35, who quietly split about a year ago, will continue to co-parent their 8-year-old son Lars.
The pair met through mutual friends in 2014 and soon began dating. They welcomed Lars in 2017, just days before Gibson was nominated for a Best Director Academy Award for Hacksaw Ridge.
“What could be more exciting than listening to the nominations being announced while holding my newborn son,” Gibson said in a statement at the time.
I cannot imagine spending eight-plus years with Mel Gibson of all people. Not only spending eight years with him romantically, but having a child with him? Ugh. I’m glad Rosalind escaped, and I genuinely hope there’s no drama or horrific backstory for their split. Rosalind is only 35 – she has her whole life ahead of her.

I have a friend from grad school who is my age, 59 or maybe 60. He married last year and is about to have his first child. I knew his wife was quite a bit younger but I didn’t know how much younger until she popped up on my FB feed as “someone I might know.” She graduated from college in 2021. Holy cow! I thought she was maybe in her early 30s. Nope. She is younger than both my kids. I just can’t imagine being married to a man 30 years my senior.
I hope he treats her like a queen and their baby knows only love and happiness.
With that kind of an age gap…. It’s gonna take a miracle.

Mel Gibson was my moment of realization that holding liberal values (which I do) does not mean people who were my social models will stand on principles. In group relationships, personal and social connections will out. Hollywood is just a club and if you are in that is stronger than any sin (maybe excepting murder). I admired so many actors, would get so excited when they endorsed Dem candidates, thought their views on politics mattered. Misunderstood the messages of their roles and movies as being them personally. No more.
Given my age, Gibson’s “un-cancelling” was the moment for me. For others, I know it’s Polanski, Weinstein, Depp, probably now Pitt. Gibson’s anti-semitism wasn’t some small ooopsie, it was one of the most vile, deeply pure Soviet-style antisemitism that I really thought there was no way he’d be forgiven for. He was. The only reason he didn’t have a true “comeback” is just based on his failure to have more big hits. Had he done that, he’d be golden.
Anyway, just a personal reflection. Everyone has their line. For me, it was Gibson. And damn did I get let down.
He threatened to murder his long time partner and the mother of one of his other children. “Bury her in the rose garden” or some such.
I’m so glad Robin and his kids all got away from him. I can’t imagine the abuse they went through.
I remember my moment of – bro’s not ok. He was on Oprah and he kept compulsively pushing his face upwards. I thought maybe he was self conscious about his looks or something?
But it was so constant, so obsessive – my 12 year old self was like – I think he’s on drugs. Lots of drugs. I didn’t know what drugs did or how they affected people. But it was the first time I had clocked unusual behavior – his face pushing and his bizarre interview – as anything other than people just being people.
It is astounding how many of these right wing maga jerks do drugs. Everything from steriods to illegal street drugs. And that’s on top of the alcoholism most of them have.
He was always off around the edges. He was one of my celebrity crushes as a young’en. (I also adored Charlie Sheen and Johnny Depp, so clearly my judgment in male idols has always been bad). I remember as an US interview (before the glossy reformat) conducted with Mel around the time his Hamlet (may have the timing off) was released where he made off the wall statements about refusing to eat chicken breasts and thinking he wasn’t right. TPOTC was sick torture p@rn and should have turned people off. Instead it became a phenomenon among the Evangelical nutters. The combo of his odd “pranks”, his strange public comments, casual sexism, his clearly drugged out behavior, religious fanaticism, the antisemitic rant, calling the female police officer sugar @!@$ and the explosive corded rants against the mother of his child should have ended his career. White privilege is real and the fact that he is defended by so many in the industry is proof that money talks. Anyone else would have been permanently canceled after one of his f#ckups.
