Zendaya confronted her BET award hairstyle haters on Twitter

Here are some photos of Zendaya at the BET Awards. She wore a semi-sheer Nicolas Jebran shirt, no pants, and Roberto Cavalli shoes. No one really noticed her outfit though. People were busy freaking out about her pixie hairdo.

This is a wig. Zendaya loves to play with different styles and heavily experiment on the red carpet. Sometimes her wigs are a hit, and other times don’t really matter because they’re only temporary. You never know when Zendaya will go Diana Ross long, Jackie O. short, or somewhere in between. She’s also done dreadlocks, which was her most memorable look.

Twitter didn’t enjoy this pixie style. I won’t repeat any of the rude tweets, but Zendaya saw them and tweeted back to the haters.

Zendaya doesn’t care too much. She cares enough to post a few talk-back photos, but Z always carefully considers her responses on social media. She decided it was worth confronting Twitter on this point. Z’s also been on a non-shaming crusade on the topic of choosing not to wear makeup. She’s not anti-makeup or pro-makeup. Zendaya wants women to do whatever they please with their style and not worry about the shamers.

      • nic says:

And that maturity and rock’n feminism! Love her!

      • qwerty says:

I like this girl. Don’t really care about all these younger kids in entertainment but always have an eye on her, her style is great and generally speaking she seems cool.

    • JudyK says:

Agree that she’s beautiful, and I LOVE her hair.

She reminds me of someone I knew in high school and college, and I thought she was the most beautiful creature I ever saw…Melinda Madison, are you still around! 🙂

    • minx says:

YES, and I love her hair, her whole look.

    • LA Juice says:

+1 let the teenage girl play with fashion- she’s practically flawless in anything she does.

  2. MelissaManifesto says:

What exactly did they say about her hairstyle? Looks like a normal pixie cut, I don’t see the problem.

  3. Allie says:

She has the type of face to pull off any type of hair, really. Get it, Zendaya.

  4. Kitten says:

She is ROCKING that wig. Seriously, she’s a gorgeous young woman that could probably pull off any hairstyle.

  5. Bee says:

What exactly does Zendaya do? I only know about her from her being on the red carpet. Like why was she at the Oscars?

    • Bella says:

Zendaya is an actress and a singer.

    • JENNA says:

Idk. I listened to her song REPLAY and it’s just autotuned trash. She reminds me of Karrueche Tran.

    • nenou95 says:

She had a small part in taylor swift ‘s bad blood video!!! But more seriously she is a disney star and she sings too

    • AlmondJoy says:

She has her own show on Disney called K.C. Undercover and a few years ago she starred in another show on the same channel called Shake It Up. My students were obsessed with it.

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

She’s an actress, singer, and producer.

    • Josefa says:

She’s a Disney girl (aka sings, acts, etc). What separates her from all the others is she seems pretty mature and has a good head over her shoulders. Or, in other words, you won’t read headlines about her excesses in 5 more years.

  6. Bella says:

I honestly didn’t know who she was until after the whole Fashion Police fiasco, but I am a total fan now! I think Zendaya is amazing and shows class and grace beyond her years. She is also super gorgeous.

Zendaya can do no wrong in my book. I’m all about confident and smart young women. We need so much more of this in a world where the vapid waste of life that is Kylie Jenner is being viewed as some kind of idol for young girls.

    • lucy2 says:

Me too – I don’t follow all the Disney stars or whatever, but she impressed me with how she handled the whole Fashion Police thing. She seems very smart and confident, and a great role model for young fans.
I don’t love the wig, but she is gorgeous and makes it work. But really, who cares? It’s a wig for one night.

      • Bella says:

@lucy2 — I don’t follow Disney stars or anything like that either, but after the way she handled herself with the Fashion Police incident I looked into her and was amazed! I watched all of her Dancing With the Stars episodes and absolutely loved her. I don’t love the wig either, but I do love that she likes to play around and is confident and tries new things.

    • CityGirl says:

      Bella – ITA!!

She is a remarkable young adult and if our youth of today wants to emulate someone , I sure hope it is someone like Zendaya vs. some of the other young adults out there that we always seem to hear/talk about in a negative manner. We all know to whom I’m referring – I’m trying to be a responsible adult and not throw shade

  7. AlmondJoy says:

She’s such a gorgeous girl. Not sure why people freak out when certain celebs switch things up. It’s just hair! The cool thing about wearing wigs is thay you can have a completely different look for a night without cutting or changing the texture of your own hair.

  8. FingerBinger says:

I thought she was an actress. The only time people talk about her is when it’s something to do with hair.

  9. Samtha says:

She looks adorable with that hair. People are just rude for no damn reason.

I do feel like shouting, “Put on some pants!” though. Maybe that’s just my mom side coming out.

  10. Kloops says:

She’s wearing a sparkly blouse and no pants. The hair is fine. Half her outfit is missing.

    • Original T.C. says:

      +1

Yeah how can you miss that unattractive blouse with the missing pants and go straight to the wig? I give her props for experimenting on styles but that blouse is all types of fail and kind of trashy that I can’t believe her protective stage Dad didn’t nix it. She usually goes for classy sexy, trashy just doesn’t benefit her image unless she is trying to do the usual Disney kid shocking the public to be seen as an adult.

PS of course she cares what people are saying otherwise she wouldn’t have responded. We all care to a certain degree when criticized.

      • Livealot says:

Idk I’m kinda digging the shirt dress

      • CityGirl says:

Livealot – ME TOO!! IF I was her age I would totally rock that dress (shirt)
Who am I kidding? If I could afford to buy it I would totally rock that dress right now in my older middle age!!

  11. Lemon says:

That’s almost exactly my mom’s 30 years of hair! She was of the era where ladies cut their hair at 35 or 40, golden girl style. Now that I’m 40 I got warned that my hair is too long for my age! It’s just past my shoulders.

It’s always strange to see styles come and go. This looks very 80s/90s to me.

    • CityGirl says:

Lemon – I’m 50 and my hair hits my waist. I was told the same thing but I drive a convertible and long hair is easier to contain. Besides, who cares? That rule died before the No white after Labor Day thing you know?

  12. perplexed says:

Her hair doesn’t look bad to me.

  13. BengalCat2000 says:

    She’s freaking gorgeous.
OT, but I got on Twitter a few months ago and it kind of freaks me out. I can’t imagine what fame and social media would do to me. She always comes across as mature for her age. She’ll be fine. But I’m gonna have to delete my sh@t…. Ugh, I feel like a relic at 42!

  14. Juniper says:

This person seems to be famous for people’s reaction to her hair and nothing else. Of course she was going to respond. #doyoudoanythingelse

  15. claire says:

Her hair looks cute. The insults are dumb. But really, if you don’t care, then don’t actually care. Don’t respond. Ignore it. This type of response always annoys me…it shows you really do care.

  16. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

She’s one of the many girls I’m expecting great things from.

She’s informed, educated and willing to stand up for herself. I loved that she doesn’t let people reduce the issue to ‘it’s just a wig’. Even now I think it’s easier for people to behave ignorantly than just make small effort to be informed and she calls them out on that.

  17. nikzilla says:

    She looks adorable.

  18. Tacos and TV says:

I like it. It’s fun. Plus, it’s a wig people! who cares. People just love to be trolls.

  19. Lucy says:

Unless she ever proves not to be worthy of It, I will defend this girl to death.

  20. alicegrey12 says:

Love the hair. You go girl!

  21. Neelyo says:

Was there really such an outrage over it? Seriously, how big a deal was this or is she going to work the hairstyle controversy gimmick until she comes up with something else?

    • Josefa says:

You’d be surprised by how big social media is. Even low-tier celebs like Zendaya can get sizeable ammounts of hate. There’s 300 million twitter accounts, so, if only 0,3% of them actually care about Z and her hair (which is more than possible considering social media attracts mostly younger audiences), we’re still talking about a million people writing sh*t about her.

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Considering she spoke up as a young woman about racism and ignorance publicly in this country she’s also on a lot of destructive people’s radar.

Even you called it a gimmick that she might have received hate rather than just looking at some of the comments on her feed.

  22. Sasha says:

Stunning girl. She could shave her head and it wouldn’t matter. I imagine these are the same people who freak out any time a woman cuts her hair. It’s so boring to me. A lot of women look fantastic with short hair. People are just programmed to lose their shit any time a woman gives up perfectly curled beach hair.

  23. kri says:

This girl is so gorgeous!! So much talent and brains. If I had a daughter, I wouldn’t mind her idolizing Z. She rocks. I look for big things for her.

  24. jinglebellsmell says:

She could wear a blob of conditioner atop her head and still look amazing.

I’m not understanding why anyone trashed it? It’s a flawless pixie that looks amazing on her.

  25. I Choose Me says:

That wig looks great. She has a gorgeous face and legs for days. I really love her attitude and vibe.

  26. Tracy says:

The hair is def not her best look. But when you have THOSE legs, nothing else much matters.

  27. Kell says:

She is just ABSOLUTELY STUNNING. Love her!

  28. a.d. says:

as far as i’m concerned, this girl can rock anything. she has a gorgeous face & great body.. good fashion & there aren’t too many celebrity women i can think of who can quite literally pull off whatever hairstyle/wig they attempt.. a lot have tried & failed- (rihanna springs to mind)
