The Sussexes are considering buying a second home in LA, possibly

The Kardashian clan enjoy family dinner at Nobu but there is no sign of Khloe!

Just a few weeks ago, all hell broke loose on Easter weekend. The Times of London had an exclusive story about how the Kensington Palace and Buckingham Palace courtiers were scheming to figure out a way to exile the Sussexes within the next year. The idea behind it was largely structured around William’s desire to push the popular Sussexes out of public view. Exiling the Sussexes to Canada or Australia were not strong possibilities because the Sussexes would still get tons of press in those countries. So the scheme was to exile them to an African country. Within a day, the story shifted to “Harry and Meghan WANT to be exiled!” Then the Sussexes’ PR shut down all speculation and they were basically like “we’re not going to be exiled.” I bring this up because I really feel like there’s still a general vibe of “let’s get the Sussexes the hell out of England.” Which brings me to this story:

Meghan and Prince Harry want to find a family home in California after the birth of their baby, The Sun on Sunday can reveal. Friends of the former Hollywood actress claim she’ll look for a place near where she grew up in Los Angeles. The Duchess of Sussex wants it as a bolthole for her new family — and to be near mum Doria Ragland.

A source revealed: “Meghan definitely wants a place in Los Angeles — she loves the city, the lifestyle and climate. Ultimately, she is a California girl and can breathe easier there. Hollywood is in her DNA and I think it is where she has always wanted to keep a solid footing. Spending time there would also allow her some freedom and independence from both the Palace and the Press — and more control over her life and the people around her. She is a duchess in the UK, but could be a queen in LA.”

Our source added: “Meghan is very close to her mother and will want to be able to share quality time with her in her home town. She also has friends in LA with babies and will want to have that interaction and bring up her child in a less restrictive environment — similar to how she grew up.”

Any move for Meghan is not likely be immediately after the birth of the royal baby but when the family becomes more settled. Another source said: “They’re not looking to buy anywhere just yet as they’ve only just finished the renovations on Frogmore Cottage. But they’re definitely eyeing up a place in California.”

[From The Sun]

This is one of those stories where the British tabloids are just openly inviting criticism on Meghan, and they can get her coming and going. If the story is “Meghan doesn’t want to leave England,” then the interpretation is “this diva a–hole wants to steal focus constantly from the more important royals like William and Kate.” If Meghan wanted a second home in LA, the interpretation is “she’s so pathetic for wanting to be a QUEEN in LA, how uppity!” They’ve literally structured all arguments so that Meghan can never win. In any case, I’ve always thought that in the long term, Meghan and Doria would find a way to be closer to each other – it’s the single mother/only child thing. Either Doria will get a place in England, or the Sussexes will get a place in LA. I would put money on Doria being the one to get a place in England though.

The British tabs won’t even effing leave her alone to have the baby in peace and quiet. The lowly sixth in line must bring in an awful lot of clicks and ad dollars to be so constantly dragged in the tabs.

I read an interesting take on this situation on Lainey’s site. She wrote that perhaps this is all about the long game. That perhaps William is afraid Harry could possibly be voted in as the head of the Commonwealth instead of him. Assuming the Monarchy survives and Harry & Meg continue in their Commonwealth roles and do a great job, that possibility might exist.

    • Lucylee says:

Vote in Harry or someone besides William. I think they are going to start losing members a few years from now. The Queen made an appeal for them to elect Charles.

    • minny says:

Meghan just went into labor per Rhiannon Mills.

      • olive says:

look at that, the palace announcing she’s in labor, just as they said they would. conspiracy theorists who have been saying the baby is already have can have a seat.

  2. Div says:

No way will they buy a house in L.A.—they know it will look wasteful (and it is wasteful). Doria will visit Meghan and stay with the Sussexes imo.

    • BlueOrange says:

I’m not sure it would be wasteful but it would be pretty stupid. How can they be full time working Royals and spend any significant amount of time in LA?

      • bettyrose says:

Admittedly a second home in the Commonwealth would make more sense, but L.A. is a major city with plenty of opportunity to engage with international parties in soft diplomacy.

  3. lily says:

They won’t leave her alone will they…..

    • Kittycat says:

      They never leave her alone.

    • Susannah says:

This is one of those stories the tabs get from Meghan crazies. This is just a cover for the BRF Buying a home for Meghan in LA after the divorce from Harry. They also said Meghan wasn’t dating Harry, then they broke up and Meghan was stalking Harry, then she was making up the engagement, then Charles would have her thrown out of England, the wedding would never happen, Meghan isn’t pregnant with the baby she just had today, etc. they’re nuts but so many of the tabloid rumors start with those obsessed Meghan lunatics.

  4. Rhys says:

Doesn’t Doria still live in that small house she has had for many years in a sketchy area of Los Angeles? I saw pix of her coming out of it recently and read something about it being a not very nice neighborhood (meaning crime of course, but also one of those areas where poor, blacks and Latina can actually afford a roof over their head). Considering that her daughter had been successful (and if we believe some commenters here, a millionaires many times over) I respect her for living her life on her own terms.

    • IlsaLund says:

This sounds like tabloid rubbish. Doria lives in a middle to upper middle class neighborhood.

    • Toot says:

The neighborhood Doria lives in is considered the black “Beverly Hills”, so I think you’re confused with her area.

It’s called View Park Windsor Hills. Kind of ironic Meghan and Doria both live in a “Windsor” area.

    • Millenial says:

It’s not sketchy at all. It got labelled as sketchy because it’s a predominately black neighborhood. But then, I find lots of white people are shocked that there are rich black neighborhoods at all, because I guess white people don’t get out much or something.

    • Sassy says:

Too many dog whistles in one comment for me.

      • Kittycat says:

        Its getting more and common.

      • Olenna says:

“Dog-whistles” is correct. Typical subversive, disingenuous comment from this OP. She/he has been following Meghan long enough to know that what she wrote about Doria’s home is just BS.

      • Ader says:

Whooo Whee! This was one for the record books. Geez.

    • Lucylee says:

This description was lifted from Wikipedia and shows how little research RRs do before they write all of this crap about Duchess Meghan.

View Park−Windsor Hills is one of the wealthiest primarily African-American areas in the United States. The two neighborhoods are part of a band of neighborhoods, from Culver City’s Fox Hills district on the west to the Los Angeles neighborhood of Leimert Park on the east, that compose the single largest and one of the wealthiest, best-educated, and geographically contiguous historically black communities in the western United States. This corridor also includes Baldwin Hills and Ladera Heights neighborhoods. It was founded in the late 1930s.[2]

      • Rhys says:

That makes so much more sense. I know she is a social worker and cares about helping people, and community, but there’s no reason she would choose to continue to live in a bad neighborhood. It sounds like it would be a racist assumption – if you are black, you must be living in the slum.

    • ProfPlum says:

View Park is not a sketchy part of LA. It’s an historically AfAm neighborhood of lovely bungalows and great views. My friend bought a house there and asking was over a million—and it went for over asking. Hardly sketchy.

  5. Sparkly says:

It honestly sounds like someone’s trying to convince her. “You love the town and climate! You would be a QUEEN there! Your mom is there! FFS GTFO ALREADY!”

  6. Jessica says:

Yawn. LA is overpriced. I don’t ever think they will buy a house there.

  7. Caity says:

Ah yes of course they’ll be free from the pesky press in quiet old Los Angeles where there’s no paparazzi at all /s
This really was just another excuse to attack Meghan.
I agree the only possible option for Doria to H&M more is for Doria to be in England

  8. Ira says:

It sounds like a good plan for the sussex. The can go back and forth uk-us. Afterall America is probably a better place for them to work on their global humanitarian work. High profile figure like them of course doesn’t the leg works in humanitarian. I imagine they’re responsible for raising awareness, doing advocacy and looking for finding, so stationed in America will be better than one of the country in Africa.
Whatever William thought about this, is it matter? There’s always room for Harry and Meghan to do their job and I believe international community will appreciate it.

    • Rita says:

(I don’t think the original article is dragging them, but I’m American so don’t speak the Queen’s English.) I know even a small condo would be expensive, but something like that, as an American base, to visit family and see other friends. A “pied d’terre”?

  9. Seraphina says:

Who really cares if they buy a second home???? She’s AMERICAN. why should they have a second home here. It’s not like she the future Queen Consort or they are second or third or fourth in line to the throne

The British press is looking for anything to bail her. What if she were French or Swedish and they were looking at a second home, would it draw criticism???

  10. Hmmm says:

Ummm, I doubt they would buy in LA. There are other areas they could go to that would be much better for them 🙄 but don’t think they’ll be moving to America any time soon.

  11. Becks1 says:

I can see them buying a house in LA (or somewhere in the States). Not to live in permanently, but maybe spend a month there in the summer or over school breaks, not unlike how Charles and the Queen spend extensive time in Scotland.

Of course the logistics would be trickier, and more complicated, but I don’t think its outside the realm of possibility.

  12. BayTampaBay says:

This is NOT going to happen as living in the USA has tax implications depending on how long one stays.

  13. Guest says:

Doubt it but who could blame them.

I do think eventually they will leave England. Whether that be after Charles and the queen passes or not. I mean who wants to live under king willy? 🤢

  14. Tris says:

“Hollywood actress”. Ha! She was a Toronto actress.

  15. Chef Grace says:

They really want to get that uppity black woman out of the castle, eh?
Dangle a home in LA and off she will go!

  16. Bettyrose says:

The story is another hit piece on Meg, but even so I can totally see wanting to keep a foothold in L.A. Has she ever lived full time outside L.A.? Hasn’t she always spent some portion of the year there?

  17. Lisa says:

    Doubtful.

  18. ana says:

And who’s going to foot the bill if they do that? Maybe Harry can get an acting job to pay for his Hollywood mansion.

    • noway says:

Just from Diana alone he has a net worth of over 25 million dollars, and pretty sure Meghan had some money too from her acting career. Plus, I think Charles has some money too, which isn’t tied to British taxpayers. Granted LA is expensive, but not that expensive.

      • Bettyrose says:

You can definitely live like a bazillionaire in L.A., but even multi-millionaires have some options.

  19. Whataboutme says:

    Meghan has a boy!

  20. noway says:

The only thing I find wrong about this story is the insinuation they would be moving full time to LA cause Meghan is pushing this issue. She just hasn’t shown any sign she is pushing anything. However, it wouldn’t surprise me if they bought a second home in California. I mean even Princess Grace still had property in Pennsylvania when she was married to King Ranier. Queen Noor had her home in Fairfax, VA married to the King of Jordan. They were actually the spouses of working and ruling monarchs. The British Monarchy isn’t a ruling monarchy, just ceremonial, and Harry isn’t going to be King. She’s American, and what’s wrong with wanting to have a place here too. It’s the tone or maybe the way people are reading into the article, but I can’t find anything wrong with a natural US born California woman wanting to have a place in her state. The weather IS better than a lot of places, especially all of Great Britain, plus it’s her home. Granted she agreed to live in Britain, but we don’t know if it was meant forever or all the time. I mean Prince Albert of Monaco speaks English with an American accent. Do you know why? Aside from his mom being American, he spent a lot of summers in the US was actually a summer camp counselor in NH and went to college here. He didn’t give up his dual citizenship until he was 21. It’s not unheard of to spend a good portion of your time in the US if you are royalty, especially when you are half American.

I hope the Sussexes do buy a house in LA, and wouldn’t it be cool to see the polo baby as he gets older doing yoga with grandma on the beach and maybe learning to surf. I’d love that over the usual ski pictures we get from the royalty. They are cute pictures, but have something for us who love the sun over the snow. One of my favorite pictures of Harry and William was the amusement park pictures with Diana. Imagine the Sussexes at Disneyland. Seriously, this would be a win for us all. People need to ignore the snotty inuendo and bless the fact that if they move here even part time it would be a total win for all of us, and I really don’t see either Harry or Meghan deterred by the press. If they can handle the crap with her father and crazy half sister they can handle anything. If they decide to buy a house here and live here part time, it’s cause they want to not because they are forced to. I don’t buy that crap.

    • bettyrose says:

Yeah, but every story about Meg suggests she’s being pushy, so we can easily just ignore that piece of it. I personally love the idea, since I live in the same time zone as L.A. and will get to see real time images if they live part time out here.

      • noway says:

Not every story. There are quite a few positive stories about her. It’s just the British gossip press is mean to begin with and more mean to her. I think it’s a combination of many things racism being a part of it. So any growing pains by either established royals, courtiers or other staffers with Meghan’s style probably is being blown out of proportion. Honestly, it would be odd if she just joined the family, which for all purposes is a job, with different cultural and work ethics and didn’t have some issues. I mean I didn’t have a job working with my in-laws, but it wasn’t all rainbows and unicorns with them from the beginning either. I just didn’t have the British press critiquing everything, then making it as gossipy as they can to sell either. This story is a perfect example. What’s so weird about an American born woman who married into royalty wanting a base in her home country? Nothing, in fact most of us probably would want that. I still think maybe if it didn’t sell so well it would go away faster.

    • Jules says:

I’m with you up until certain points. What’s wrong with skiing? Do we want to Americanize them? Turn them into American style celebrities? They shouldn’t have to conform to us. That applies to all members of the royal family. They are royal and British. They enjoy warm weather sports too but they don’t need to become “Californians” or “American style celebrities” or “surf” because you or I want to see that.

Next we’re going to be asking them to give up horseback riding and Balmoral. Those are institutions that contribute to their established identity. If Meghan wants to live here she has valid reasons to do so, but I don’t like how we all want to impose things on her and Harry. Let’s defend/support them but not impose our ideals on them either nor on the rest of the Royal family.

  21. Lynne says:

I could see one of the commonwealth countries vs the US. But I don’t see it happening.

  22. Vanessa says:

when that story came out about Meghan and Harry being exiles to Africa the Sussexs let it been know through Their sources that they were not going anywhere . They both already stated numerous times that the u.k And commonwealth and their Charity’s are important to them this just a another hit piece on Meghan to try to ruined her and Harry day the day they became parents it’s ridiculous at point . Soon the British press would say Meghan and Harry are moving to the moon and people will getting all irrationally and claims Meghan think she too good to live on earth who does this former actress think she is .

  23. KellyRyan says:

    I hope so!
It is possible to remain anonymous in LA. Gated communities, private jets and transportation not open to scrutiny. Amal and George own a home in LA, and I see no evidence of paps.

    • noway says:

I don’t think I agree. There are far more paps in LA, and it’s not like Windsor isn’t gated. Plus, he’s Prince Harry, people are going to follow him anywhere. Keep in mind though no one saw her for the last month of her pregnancy, she’s able to have peace and quiet if she wants to there. I think they may have an LA home for summers or something cause it’s her home for most of her life. They may not do it right away, but it wouldn’t surprise me if she wanted to have a place there. I don’t see why some think it’s unreasonable, nor something they couldn’t personally afford without the British tax payers involvement. Why do they have to be in Great Britain 100% of the time. Not very fair in the marriage department. The delay in something like that would be the bad press she will get. She’s taking Harry away from his country.

      • Jules says:

Because she married into the British monarchy. I’m with the people who say Meghan has aright to visit LA and/or have a second home base here…especially down the line. But I disagree with those who ask why she should be in Great Britain 100% she married into a ceremonious, historical, diplomatic role, life and family. She was being asked to sacrifice a lot…possibly leading up to her citizenship. Why do we want to make Harry and this baby American. It’s one thing if they want to be here but it’s another for the public to want it and to turn them into American style celebrities when they are royals. I guess that’s what I’m trying to say.
