Schitt’s Creek had one of the most interesting television arcs, both on and off the screen. The Canadian show was a little sleeper hit that took four seasons to catch on and then took off like wildfire. Even though it was wildly popular in its fifth season, it was notably overlooked by the Emmy committee. The sixth and final season played out with even more viewers but this time, the Emmy committee buried them in nominations, 15 in total, four of which were awarded to the four Rose family members: Outstanding Leads for Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy and Supporting noms for Dan Levy and Annie Murphy. The show also got a Best Comedy Series nom. All of this is wonderful, except for the fact that the Emmy ceremony will be virtual this year, so none of them will get to ever walk the stage for this show. While speaking with Seth Meyer recently, Dan, always one to find a bright side, said a virtual awards ceremony the year they are finally recognized is probably the Schittiest storyline to date.

If I could write a Schitt’s Creek version of our team and the Emmy’s co-existing, it would have to involve some… way that we would never get there. So the fact that we have 15 nominations on a year that none of us will be able to attend feels very Schitt’s Creek, which is also such a lovely thing. I don’t know what’s happening, but we are all up in Canada right now, so I’m hoping that we’ll all just have a backyard barbecue at my dad’s house, have a few beers and hope for the best.On ending the show and how nice their fans are
We knew at season four that we had two more left. I always a fan of shows that start and finish really strong. I think we knew we had a two-season pickup, and five and six would be the last. It was a really nice way of building toward a conclusion that we had control over. Our fans have become such a lovely group of people. They’ve raised tens of thousands of dollars for charity. They’re just so supportive and my big concern was, when [said] that this would be our last season, I was expecting a kind of angry response from all of them. But the fans were so nice. They were like, ‘No, that’s too bad, and we’re very upset but how are you?’ I don’t know what we’ve done to deserve the kindness of these people.It is officially the most Canadian show of all time.

Honestly, framing it within the Schitt’s Creek world makes the virtual aspect much easier to swallow. I’m not sure how many wins the show will actually get, not that it doesn’t deserve them, but I just think the competition is strong this year. It would be a riot if whoever does win accepts in character. If they really are all in Eugene’s backyard, they could jump in on each other’s speeches. Eugene and Catherine are such institutions, it would be wonderful if they won but they really should be received by a theater full of people. Regardless, I’ll be happy with whatever. In Schitt’s case, it really is just an honor to be nominated. They were so small and unknown. To come out on top like they did without giving up creative control or copping to cheap headline-grabbing story arcs, is really life imitating art.
It’s important to point out that show wasn’t just recognized by the Television Academy this past week, Schitt’s Creek won Outstanding Comedy Series during the virtual GLAAD Media Awards, an award that means a lot to Dan for everything he’d hope to accomplish for LGBTQ representation on the show.

I’m Canadian and I’ve watched Schitt’s Creek since season 1, and I’m so happy it finally got the international attention it deserves! There are many great Canadian shows that never get the attention they deserve so this is pretty cool

I’m not Canadian, but I also loved it from the start (learned about it by accident the day the first episode aired). It’s how I learned I had the Pop channel.

@OriginalLala, are you thinking of any specifically? I’ve watched a few Canadian shows over the years, but I figure that for me to hear about them, they have to get a disproportionate amount of press, so I’m always open to suggestions for shows to keep an eye out for on streaming services.
Letterkenny is really good. A few seasons & specials. Super Canadian with their slang words etc. Anyone who grew up in small towns in Canada knows one or more people like the characters lol.
Working Moms is also really funny.

Thanks guys! I haven’t heard of all of those, but now I’ll try to check them out. I tried watching Kim’s Convenience a while back, but I bailed mid-episode (I think it was the 2nd episode), I was too mad at the father for selling his daughter’s photos that she did for her class (admittedly I turned it off before anything was fixed). I will give the show another chance.
There is also Mr D. which stars Gerry Dee who was on Last Comic Standing. That is also a funny show.

I found this show mid 2nd season & adored it so. From the moment the Jazzergals starting singing Precious Love at the wedding I starting crying!! I think David & Patrick’s relationship was one of the sweetest ever told. I truly miss this show & hope they take the lot of the Emmy’s.
I knew this was going to be a very funny show, but I didn’t know it was going to be so darn heartwarming that I welled up on many occasions!
And I have to agree about David and Patricks courtship and relationship- as a single it actually gives me so much hope, and is truly the sweetest ever told!
I was a fan before season 1 previewed. I saw the commercials and was like – yes, this is for me and feel lucky to have been going along with all the seasons. I keep telling people about it because it does take a bit to get into but once you’re in – you are SO in with these characters and you get to watch them grow but still by hysterically themselves.

I’m proudly Canadian and love SC, but can’t figure out why it was styled as an American show. Nearly all of the places referenced are outside of Canada (such that the viewer would think the family is from the US), the road distances are in miles, not kilometres, they referenced felonies instead of indictable offences, the jury selection show was all kinds of wrong – the list goes on and on. There was little in the show to centre it as Canadian.
Read an interview with the Levys. The germ of the idea behind the show is how would the Kardashians fare if they lost all their money? Consider it a compliment they couldn’t think of Canadiens that tacky!

I was late to this show finding it in its 4th season. In the beginning of the pandemic, when we went on NY Pause, this show saved me. Not only did it make me laugh, but it really has such beautify woven through it right? I call it anti-Trump world. Let me go visit anti-Trump world. I would love to live in it. Anyway I watched it a lot during March and April. I will always love these people because of that.
Agree Darla! That is probably the reason it felt so comforting to me when I binged this spring. It’s a funny show, yes, but also sweet and just creates this safe, little tv world. Love it.
Darla, your comment echos my own experience! I started watching it slowly in late February, and then when things got really crazy it became my happy place. My shelter from crazy news. I’ve been back in the office since late April, and I watch an episode on my phone every day during lunch. I haven’t seen the last season yet, I am saving it for the fall when I might need an extra bit of love.
I have such affection for these characters, the cast, the show. There’s just so much heart. Even imperfect people can be incredibly lovable, and many times it’s the quirks of people that make them so endearing. For making me love them so deeply, this show deserves ALL the awards. 🙂
Funny, I saved the last season for a “rainy day” and I was glad I did because it was the only thing that could distract me this spring. I did the same thing with Parks and Rec’s last season, waited forever to watch the last season.

I really came to embrace the show, too. They should also be nominated for the sheer number of awesome gifs that have provided tons of laughs between friends and me!
And while I agree they deserve all the nominations I’m especially excited for Annie/Alexis. I just loved everything about her, she was just hysterical, both in over the top and very subtle ways.
The photo of the Levy family was jarring — I almost forgot that Johnny and Moira aren’t a real life couple. And Twyla! The way her story ended was just so perfect.
Annie Murphy has given such a heartfelt, hilarious, and nuanced performance as Alexis throughout the whole run. Watching her character grow from a vapid socialite to a confident, competent woman was one of the series’ highlights for me. I really hope she wins in her category because she deserves it, especially after her performance this last season!
Annie was marvelous as Alexis, and her growth was amazing to watch… but, D’Arcy Carden from the Good Place is nominated in the same category and I am so torn! I want them both to win as they both did phenomenal jobs!
Love D’Arcy… She was hilarious on Broad City too. Maybe a tie?! It worked for Kate Hepburn & Streisand with the Oscar!

We binge watched this show at the beginning of the lockdown and it was just GREAT. I really needed those laughs, like seriously. I wish Netflix would air the final season.

It has actually given my husband and I such enjoyment to binge Schitt’s Creek. We really really love it (especially when life is so stressful) and I’ll be sad when we reach the end. I’m glad they were nominated for all the awards.
I absolutely ADORE this show! It is so funny, and yet so gritty, and just steeped in so much real emotion. The characters are incredibly well-developed, and there’s no shaming of their quirks and flaws, which I love! Alexis took me by surprise – so many shows do a character like hers dirty – probably make her ditzy and heartless and a piece of meat to be gawked over, but none of that happened on Schitt’s Creek. It truly is a glorious time for TV!
YAS Anam!! You are so right!!! Alexis could have been played into the ground and turned annoyingly ditzy and self centered, but they didn’t do that!!! Alexis and Moira are my favorites!! Every thing they said was just brilliant!! I LOVE that show so much!!!!!!
I loved Alexis character so much, I had to buy her signature sideways-A necklace for me and my bestie who is also a schitts creek fan. A little googling and I found out where the A -necklace was from (anthropologie). Our names don’t start with an A, but all the letter necklaces in that line were super cute. I love wearing it.

Question: does anyone know why Chris Elliot (Rowland) doesn’t participate in any of the promotions, BTS stuff, red carpets, or anyone’s social media? It looks like a major fued/snub, but I like to think everyone involved is too nice and professional for that.
I didn’t notice that but I have seen some roundtable discussions on YouTube where he was a full participant. Maybe he just doesn’t like that other stuff and was given a pass to skip it?
During all the press leading up to the final season I heard something about Chris Elliot not liking to do that stuff, as opposed to him being slighted. I don’t remember where I heard it, so I’m not sure if it was speculation or real information, but from the way the rest of the cast talks about Chris Elliot, I’m inclined to believe it’s not a snub or a feud.
That makes me feel better. It’s really obvious that he’s NEVER in things, especially all the last season things, so hopefully it’s exactly the set up he wants.
I heard that he is painfully shy in real life and all the beyond acting stuff stresses him out too much to do and do well.
Chris Elliot nevers does publicity for his projects. He doesn’t like doing it and prefers not to. There were no conflicts on the set that I have heard of
I loved Schitt’s Creek from the first episode. The characters are delightfully eccentric and likeable and the storylines are great. I’m very glad it has received a swag of nominations.

Our current political situation in the USA is horrendous and my solution to idiot overload is an episode or ten of Schitt’s Creek. There is an old commercial that used the line “Calgon take me away” Insisting a bubble bath with this product will solve your current ills. I think of Schitt’s as my Calgon. When we are bombarded with hate everyday I fight back with the kindness that Dan Levy has given us with his great writing. I love these characters more than most people these days. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for giving Schitt’s Creek life and helping me through mine.
That’s such a brilliant point! A pandemic and it’s fallout fit perfectly into the Schitt Creek world. Such a fun series, I still have the last season to savor.

I really can’t stand Chris Elliot’s humor, but I pushed through and found it really good! Still never came around to his character, but I love the rest of them!
It changes dramatically, it almost feels like a bait and switch, but in a good way. It goes from goofy to a show with so much heart. Keep watching.
I felt the same way during the first season but friends and co-workers who watched told me to push through to get to Season 2 and I’m glad I did. The first season is shaky (IMHO) but once you get past it the show gets so much better. I absolutely love, love, love the rest of the show.
I think one of the main reasons is that they tone the Roland character down after Season 1 and don’t show him as much. He is a big reason I don’t rewatch as many Season 1 episodes.
Not only is it very Schitt’s Creek that they can’t attend, it feels strangely Canadian. We wait forever for things to be noticed/get the respect they deserve and then something happens where it doesn’t work out. (See the Raptors winning last year and now the weird bubble try to repeat, or the Sale/Pelletier Olympic Gold Medal debacle of 2002)

I’m a huge fan of SCTV and Catherine and Eugene, and I still haven’t gotten into this show! I started watching the first season a few months ago and didn’t get into the second. Now that I’ve seen it, I think I’d like it, I just need to make the time for it.
I just started watching this in Netflix about 3 weeks ago. It’s one of the best shows I’ve ever watched. Hilarious and heartwarming sometimes too.
I’m really excited for the Emmys. Even virtual, it will feel like getting a small bit of normalcy back, particularly with so many other award shows postponed.
As a Canadian and ardent watcher of Schitts Creek, I am so damn proud of what they all accomplished my chest could burst! I’ve been a long-time fan of Eugene and Catherine since the SCTV days and their movies together (Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman, A Mighty Wind) are hilarious. Congrats to everyone involved and I hope you win ALL THE EMMYS!!

I just love these people SO MUCH. I had loved Eugene and Catherine for years in the Guest mockumentaries (and beyond), but this show…it’s just everything. A gift.

This is my favourite show ever and, honestly, Dan Levy is one of the most attractive men I have ever laid eyes on.
I think the son is incredibly hot and funny.
This show was consistently strong through the entire 6 season run. On a personal note, i still use Alexis’ t-Rex hand gestures and David’s pursed-lips-squinty-eye head nodding in my daily life. I occasionally mention pine cone harvest in the Fall. I hope they pick up every award.
