Mandy Moore was the guest on Kylie Kelce’s Not Gonna Lie podcast. I’ve been a big Mandy Moore fan ever since “Candy” came out, so I was excited to give it a listen. She’s my age and felt like the underdog in a Britney/Xtina/Jessica Simpson world, so I always rooted for her. Kylie may be eight years younger than we are, but she’s also a huge MM fan. In fact, she spent the entire interview fan-girling out. The very first thing Kylie asked Mandy was about the number of The Princess Diaries questions could she get out before being told to f-ck off. It was adorable.
Mandy was game to answer all of Kylie’s questions and more, including poking fun at her amazing 1990s/early 2000s fashion. (Bring back the zig-zag part, but leave the bleached eyebrows behind.) They also talked Kylie’s signature subject, which is parenting. Mandy has three children, two boys and girl, and Kylie has four daughters. While on the subject, Kylie humorously brought up some of the “more honest and humbling” things that her two eldest daughters, Wyatt, five, and Elliott, four, have said to her recently.
Last week, Mandy Moore made an appearance on Kylie Kelce’s Not Gonna Lie podcast. And during their wide-ranging conversation, the pair opened up about some of their most “gutting” and “humbling” experiences as parents.
Mandy, 41, shares three kids with her husband, Taylor Goldsmith: August “Gus” Harrison, who is 4, Oscar “Ozzie” Bennett, who is 2, and Louise “Lou” Everett, who is 7 months old. Meanwhile, Kylie has four girls with her husband, Jason Kelce: Wyatt, Elliotte, Bennett, and Finnley, who are 5, 4, 2, and 4 months, respectively.
“I like to share some of the more honest or humbling things my girls have said to me,” Kylie began before listing some of the insults she’s received from her daughters: “I’ve been told that I have a big butt. My oldest called me evil a couple weeks ago… Yesterday specifically, she pressed on my stomach and said, ‘It looks like you still have a baby in there.’”
Mandy then said that while her young boys already know how to butter her up with compliments, her 4-year-old is equally aware of how to hurt her. “The 4-year-old the other day told me that he didn’t love me anymore,” she said, while pulling a face.
“That one hurts,” Kylie noted, while Mandy agreed, “Truly the most gutting thing… It hurt me to my core.”
Kylie later explained that her eldest daughter hits her with the “I don’t love you” because she saw it get a hurt reaction out of her mom once. “My oldest says it because she did get a reaction — the one time I was like, ‘Oh.’ And I think she was like, ‘Oh, that got ya,’” she said.
However, Kylie and Mandy made it clear that they always rise above the hurtful remarks. “I always get ‘em back with, ‘Well, I love you with my whole heart,’” Kylie said, to which Mandy strongly agreed.
Kids really do say the darndest things, don’t they? They have that unbridled, truthful innocence. I’m glad Kylie and Mandy can laugh about it because it’s part of learning social interactions. Their kids feel safe and are using them as testing boards. My older son is a very thoughtful, sensitive child who also has to say what’s on his mind. He once told me that my failed haircut (that terrible bob I always lament about) made me “look like grandma.” When I asked why, his response was, “Oh, because it makes you look old.” When I said that wasn’t a nice way to describe either of us, he apologized and learned from it. My younger son (who loves Mazda red and is growing the peas) saw my visceral reaction to this comment and now, every time I get a haircut, he makes a show of repeating his brother’s original comment. It’s all in jest, but I know he’s trying to push my buttons. Kids!
The rest of the interview was pretty fun. While Kylie was questioning her about The Princess Diaries, Mandy revealed that she was absolutely game to come back for the third movie but has yet to be approached. She also said that she’d love to do another romcom, but would like for it to involve women who are in their 40s and older and have the plot deal with motherhood, second marriages, and similar issues. I have been beating this drum for years now. There is totally a market for the middle-age, elder millennial/Gen X romcom.
MM my favourite Disney princess. She doesn’t necessarily have the strongest voice but she gave Rapunzel a lot of character and spunk.
My son was watching me get a haircut once. The black gown was on, my hair was soaking wet and combed straight down and plastered to my head. Not a flattering look. Well, my boy said “you look like Snape” 😼 and I’m not gonna lie it did sting.
LOL, years ago, I was working a lot and as a result, dropped a bunch of weight. My daughter and I went out shopping for a suit/dress to wear to my SIL’s wedding. I thought, wouldn’t a peach suit look good at a wedding (it was the late 90s). I came out from the dressing room and my daughter said, “Mom, you look like a giant cantaloupe.” It went right back to the rack 🙂
